I’ve heard that New Jersey has bear sightings now more often than other places
I live not far off the AT and regularly see bears. Life is so good for them here it is common for sows to have 4 cubs a year and I have seen 5 several times. Pretty much Everytime I am at Stairway to Heaven I seen one. It gets so many day hikers that leave scraps behind so they are often close by. Nearby we have a woman who has gotten in trouble for feeding and interacting with the local bears, there are videos of bears closing her front door. I think she lives right off Wawayanda Park which the AT goes through.

@@ISuckatHiking I've got a section hike planned in June. Gonna hike from Boots Off Hostel to Damascus. I am trying to do one every year. I did Max Patch to Hot Springs last year. I probably won't get the chance to thru hike until I retire.

I've never heard anyone that covered the history of those weird seats on that peak, very odd to say the least.
They are strange and uncomfortable
So far as the food goes you could share the wealth to others or leave it in a box like others do when they get overburdened. Happens to all of the hikers at some point.

For an out of shape older hiker (ie.me) would you suggest a flip-flip? Staring in Virginia & hiking sobo then flopping to the smokies. It seems 600 easier miles will make ones needed trail legs before the smokies.

I'm not sure how well that works GA and NC will get you trail legs before the Smokies
