i love it when people hate on musicians saying they are over-rated simply because they have a large fanbase. it's not about the notes he's playing. it's about the heart behind them. that's what makes a true musician and nobody can deny that travis plays with his whole heart.
Indeed on all you say, and I witnessed myself 2 days ago. He really loves what he do and play the drums with so much passion and for that I have so much respect for him 👏 ❤
This man...this man right here. You are a great example of someone who knows about music dude. Being a good musician isn't about dominating your instrument. It's about communicating your passion and feelings through the instrument you use. And Barker does this well. He does this amazingly and that is why he is considered an excellent drummer. No one cares if you can out play him, because you'll just never beat the passion he has for music.
I'm not a drummer so pardon me if I say any incorrect drumming terms. This man is a professional drummer. He literally makes millions off of his ability to play the drums. Now, if you want to say he's not good enough, then challenge him in a drum-off. From what i've noticed, this guy can drum roll faster with one hand than all 957 people that have disliked this put together. Also, most blink-182 songs were written based off of his drum beats.
A lot of the self titled album was pre recorded drum beats cause he was on tour with another band and they were midway through making it so he left a bunch of pre recorded beats and let them choose
Sound quality makes this performance sound bad as well. You can't deny the fact that he is the heart and soul of one of the most influential pop punk band in the world, so it does not surprise me that some people(loving fans of his) would refer to him as the best drummer. Its all opinion, in my opinion, he is one of the best, and one of my favorite drummers picked out of the pop punk genre.
I would hate on Travis, but he's the whole reason I started playing drums 6 years ago in the first place and I'm pretty sure he's what got many of you hating on him started too. Sure, I'm not a huge fan of his drumming anymore, but still he's a great influence and inspired many people to start learning drums.
I'm 27, performing as a concert vocalist since 5 years old, drums since 12; been in rock to metal to thrash to jazz to blues to gospel to big band, both as a vocalist and a singer, professional and casual I have seen thousands of 12-40+ year old drummers swing wild, squeeze their sticks, hit with reckless abandon, never showcase a concept of dynamic or method - none of them impressed me, either I simply think a drum competition, which judges talent, is not a place for average drummers like him
while you all are writing bad things about this gifted drummer he is not caring what anyone thinks he has already changed the music scene by being on Blink 182.. he made his name known.. so for all of you that know his name whether you like him or not i think he made his point...
I’ve never seen this clip before. Travis is an amazing practitioner of the drum rudiments. I’m a former percussion and drum set instructor. Travis is highly skilled and technically proficient and simply AMAZING. His hand speed alone is phenomenal. There are only a small number of drummers who can play with this much speed, athleticism, dexterity and finesse. Any drummers who read this and want to play like this: make it your job or your #1 focus after work. Get into rudiments and drum corp styles of drumming. Find a local instructor and work your ass off for the next block of time. 5-10-20 years!
you can hate on travis all you want but the fact is that his style/intensity is noticed by the non musician and thus making him in the the top 10 highest paid drummers ever
This is exactly right. He's not the greatest drummer of all time, but he's not the worst either and he's good at what he does. He puts on a good show and makes good grooves for his songs. He may not deserve all the praise he gets from newbie drummers, but he certainly doesn't deserve all the hate he gets from everyone else.
Ive been playing drums since I was 4. I am 46 now and still playing for a living. I considered myself a guy that loves what I do and I try to be a student to it when I can. I just don't understand this dude. Every competitor of the drum off is better than he is. It makes me wonder how he could make a living playing drums. I guess all is possible in this great country of ours
You aren't gonna convince anyone in the comments that Travis Barker is good. Everyone's a pseudointellectual when it comes to drums apparently. I'm amazed so many of these people in the comments have made it so far in the music world with the attitudes they have. Travis is good, he fits his style well, that's what a drummer's meant to do.
He doesn't just play fast and hard, he also plays a variety of music genres and that makes him so versatile and professional. Also his creativity to add such a value to the projects he has been involved makes him an amazing musician. And also, he uses one bass drum and a few cymbals to do his magic not like those metal hard-rockers pussies using two of them to sound more but play less. Travis is DA MAN!
Well im 23 and i like it all, been playing guitar/bass,drums,keys, writing lyrics since i was 12. i never became excellent at anything, but i have many years to go. You already know my opinion. Maybe your right in a sense because he does not stick to the books. but it is good for the competition because it brings in a mixed crowd. people who might not have a real appreciation for percussion will be lured in by their *talentless* idle to realize there is more to music than computers and singers.
I'm actually glad I got so much hate.. It's refreshing. In fact, after watching this, I picked up my guitar and learned a new song. Then I went and jammed on the drums a bit. It's all about doing whatever the hell we want. You chose to respond to me, but you didn't have to. I didn't have to say anything about Travis Barker, but I did just because I wanted to be entertained. I don't hate anything. I'm just in it for enjoyment.
his timing is not off it's what the mic that's being used to record picks up. If you notice some parts of the beat are basically non-existent. It seems like he's off because you don't hear what's in between, certain drums are more amplified than others. I mean, he did record the song and played it numerous times live, I'm sure he knows the counts.
Your comment doesn't make sense -- he isn't "the drummer of this band," he is performing at a drumming competition which seeks out undiscovered, highly talented drummers. So in this case, yes, it is very much a competition / judgement of drummers . . .
travis recorded with Pink, black eyed peas, blink182, aquabats, transplants, box car racer, plus 44, yellow wolfe to name a few - thats pretty diverse, He learnt to play Jazz first then moved on to marching drums, so its clear his rudiments are spot on... his timing is impecable.. i have never heard him use dynamics though.. I really think the travis barker we are talking about are 2 different people, if you refer to him as blink only fair enough, search around and you'll find decent stuff .
wow. i'll give him credit for having a thick face, being not ashamed of his "drumming". the finalists here in this competition would literally wipe the floor with this drum clown's face.
Anyone who is as successful as he is will more than likely be a great musician. The sheer fact that he managed to do this for a living means that even if he wasn't that good when Blink started - years and years of playing for hours a day as his sole way to earn a living will have perfected his skills more than anyone sitting in an office for 8 -10 hours a day.
Why do so much people hate on travis? Its not like he goes saying hes the best drummer around, he just does what he likes, and people say whatever they wanna say, There are plenty of better drummers out there, just like there are worse drummers, or not worse, but very simple drummers out there for even bigger bands, and no one gives a split shit about whether they're good or not, then why hate on travis?
my opinion on Travis:He's god decent chops, there's no denying that. it's clear that he practiced his rudiments when he was younger and worked them till he got them fast as hell. the only problem is...that's the only thing he can do. All he does is move them around the set with no feel or groove and no emotion. and thats what good music needs....emotion and groove.
I'm not trying to come to his rescue or anything, but I think part of it is the camera. He probably had the song in his headphones while the song was maybe a second off in the video shown to the audience. I could be wrong, though.
He's still one of my favorite drummers regardless of a bad performance. Im a big fan of Travis and he's the reason I picked up a pair of sticks. Is he the best drummer in the world? Hell no. Is he overrated? Yes. But is he still a good drummer? Yes.
I don't cry because he hits the drums too hard (I've seen people play harder), I cry because he has absolutely no class about the music he plays. I feel like he's the kind of drummer that makes the rest of us look like a bunch of kids who just want to hit stuff. He knows how to play, I'll give him that, but I don't see myself acknowledging him as a musician anytime soon.
holy shit... i watch all your videos dude and im a huge fan of yours i cant believe you were actually the one to reply to my comment and i never knew you were his cousin and i wasnt tryin to compare the 2 they were brought up in the comment i replied to i like some of travis's drumming but i can never compliment the guy becuase hes already too loved for his skill level people make false accusations of him being the greatest and it bugs me i think the jimmy was more unique with his hands and
he has grown alot sinc this vid!! he is a musician! one of the greatest! people just think hes not because he beats the drums!! you cry because he plays too hard. well so did buddy and grohl so dont give him shit. haters
I'm not a Travis Barker fan, my idol is Dave Weckl, but I can't see anything wrong with this guy. I mean, he can play. Why so much hate this guy? Because many hate him? judge for your own, do not depend on other's own judgement.
We are all here because this is a part of the Guitar Center Drum Off Competition The ultimate question, the crux of my confusion / concern of Barker playing at the drum-off . . . If Barker entered the competition, at the most local level of the GC Drum-Off, would he even place 1st or 2nd on his first night of competition? The answer that any competent drummer / musician will agree with is, "not a fucking chance." With that asked / answered, why is he performing at the drum-off finals? Amen.
He's actually in the top tattoo'd Drummers in the world. top 15 total, not to mention this isn't him covering a song, it's him doing a drum solo over it.. this is also a 2003 Guitar center drum off. He's an amazing Drummer. Not afraid to break rules and think outside the box, thats why he goes somewhere with his drumming and you'll be doing it in your moms basement for the rest of your life following all the rules
totally agree with you. typical example of non musicians who make a musician famous. this guy can drum (my 5 year old cousin can also drum though) but he dont deserve to be compared to or idolised like one of the greats.
why do drums have to be incredibly complicated in order to be "great?" as long as the drummer creates a beat that is their own style and matches the aura of the song, then why criticize so much? Some of the best songs are so simple, because any more than that and they wouldn't be as great. He's doing what he loves, so why hate.
I agree its not the best Ive seen from him but the fact that the music was added to the video over the original audio track makes it sound a lot sloppier than it actually is
These comments are funny. Okay, if this is the first video of Travis you watch.. I agree that this isn't such a good performance.. but look to the drums with Adrian Young and just many of the other stuff. Not comparing with others, but he deserves to be one of the best drummers (along with the technical good ones like Mike Portnoy and Thomas Lang etc)
Those who claim he's the best drummer in the world, please go and watch Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Virgil Donati, Marco Minneman, Buddy Rich, Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Tony Royster Jr, Mike Mangini, Thomas Lang, Horacio Hernandez, Jojo Mayer etc. Travis Barker can bash all he wants but I'm still waiting for the day where he can play a polyrhythm/ostinato or maybe odd time signatures.
hes basically on the same level with different style.(i do like Rev very much please consider that. The hype is because people who actually wanted to see Travis, good or bad, they came here to watch it...then all the dirrty kids came out to express there underdeveloped opinions on people they don't even like.
Dear god... How this guy could be called a good drummer is beyond me... It's like he's stuck at the fast and loud phase, and refuses to enter the "Finesse is a good thing sometimes" phase.
i love it when people hate on musicians saying they are over-rated simply because they have a large fanbase. it's not about the notes he's playing. it's about the heart behind them. that's what makes a true musician and nobody can deny that travis plays with his whole heart.
It's cuz there jealous cuz they can't do it
The reason why people hate on real musicians is because they #CANTDOIT Themselves 😎👌👍!!
he also has some serious rudiment chops, his marching snare solos are A1
Indeed on all you say, and I witnessed myself 2 days ago. He really loves what he do and play the drums with so much passion and for that I have so much respect for him 👏 ❤
It plays high-level notes, as well as paradiddles, ghost notes, and rolls.
Its funny how so many people say how bad travis is when really none of the drummers commenting are anywhere near as good as travis XD
He suckd
I'm not a drummer so pardon me if I say any incorrect drumming terms. This man is a professional drummer. He literally makes millions off of his ability to play the drums. This is amazing.
why so many dislikes, travis is awesome!
is he supposed to be out of time haha
Its sounds out of time cause the person who made the video put the original song over his performance :-)
I'm 27, performing as a concert vocalist since 5 years old, drums since 12; been in rock to metal to thrash to jazz to blues to gospel to big band, both as a vocalist and a singer, professional and casual

Travis Barker is good drummer I don't understand why everyone is always hating on him. He doesn't suck.
this guy has probably inspired more people and has more soul in his playing than you ever will/have.

thank you sooo much for saying this!!!!! ive been telling people this for years

i want to be your friend. That was an EPIC burn, good sir
there's absolutely no need to be so rude by bashing him - it accomplishes nothing. He still gets to bang on a drum set for a living...and we don't.
versatility through genres, extensive knowledge of rudiments and timings and very fine use of dynamics.
his timing is not off it's what the mic that's being used to record picks up. If you notice some parts of the beat are basically non-existent. So in this case, yes, it is very much a competition / judgement of drummers . . .
it's from '03. he was probably trying to promote the self-titled album.
This is the only "bad" video I have ever seen of Travis drumming. He's still a good drummer, and one of my favorites.
great solo
THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER
Travis is not a technically and musically crazy drummer but you just can't keep your eyes away from him. This is Mr. Barker
travis recorded with Pink, black eyed peas, blink182, aquabats, transplants, box car racer, plus 44, yellow wolfe to name a few - thats pretty diverse, He learnt to play Jazz first then moved on to marching drums, so its clear his rudiments are spot on... his timing is impecable.. i have never heard him use dynamics though.. Travis Barker: %50 chops. %50 super crazy energy.
Travis Barker is the best drummer IN HIS MUSIC GENRE
wow. i'll give him credit for having a thick face, being not ashamed of his "drumming". the finalists here in this competition would literally wipe the floor with this drum clown's face.

Talk shit all you want, Travis has amazing energy on stage, and i respect him for that.

If this guy went to his local guitar center to enter in the drum off I'm 100% sure he wouldn't even make it past the store finals.
its the name that makes him famous, not his skills. but he has fun doing it so who are we to criticize him for the way he plays...
I'm not trying to come to his rescue or anything, but I think part of it is the camera. He probably had the song in his headphones while the song was maybe a second off in the video shown to the audience. I could be wrong, though.
post punk!! the mans energy is great..subtle t
is under rated in his style
music is not a competition...stop hating and listen to the music/musicians you like
I enjoyed this.
What he's doing to that ride is downright criminal.
He's still one of my favorite drummers regardless of a bad performance. Im a big fan of Travis and he's the reason I picked up a pair of sticks. Is he the best drummer in the world? Hell no. Is he overrated? Yes. But is he still a good drummer? Yes.
For anyone who doesn't get just how good Travis Barker is, watch what he did with DJ AM......You're welcome.
I also agree with the talent show part considering its guitar centers drum off, I take back that part lol
thank you.. so much
If this guy can be famous doing this, I could be a millionare to
because style, that's why. he is far from being a high class drummer, but he really feels what he is doing and the people get that and like it.
I don't cry because he hits the drums too hard (I've seen people play harder), I cry because he has absolutely no class about the music he plays. I feel like he's the kind of drummer that makes the rest of us look like a bunch of kids who just want to hit stuff. You’re a fucking bot
Came to see drumming and an MMA fight broke out! Dude be kickin his own ass all up in here! Great flying elbow technique! LoL
holy shit... i watch all your videos dude and im a huge fan of yours i cant believe you were actually the one to reply to my comment and i never knew you were his cousin and i wasnt tryin to compare the 2 they were brought up in the comment i replied to i like some of travis's drumming but i can never compliment the guy becuase hes already too loved for his skill level people make false accusations of him being the greatest and it bugs me i think the jimmy was more unique with his hands and

Not to mention, he actually was off time for a portion of this. I wouldn't say he's talentless by any means... he's just a great showman and marketer.
Barker joined Blink-182 ca.1998. He got into the band by stepping in during a tour he's old band did with Blink.
I m in love Travis barker
I'm not a Travis Barker fan, my idol is Dave Weckl, but I can't see anything wrong with this guy. I mean, he can play. Why so much hate this guy? Because many hate him? judge for your own, do not depend on other's own judgement.
Travis has some mad chops dude haha.
We are all here because this is a part of the Guitar Center Drum Off Competition
The ultimate question, the crux of my confusion / concern of Barker playing at the drum-off . . .
If Barker entered the competition, at the most local level of the GC Drum-Off, would he even place 1st or 2nd on his first night of competition?
The answer that any competent drummer / musician will agree with is, "not a fucking chance."
With that asked / answered, why is he performing at the drum-off finals?
Amen.
lol the fact that you stumbled through typing that without realizing the irony of your pompous statement is remarkable.
THANK YOU
I clicked on this video for laughs and drama
sure got what I came for!
He's actually in the top tattoo'd Drummers in the world. top 15 total, not to mention this isn't him covering a song, it's him doing a drum solo over it.. this is also a 2003 Guitar center drum off. He's an amazing Drummer. Not afraid to break rules and think outside the box, thats why he goes somewhere with his drumming and you'll be doing it in your moms basement for the rest of your life following all the rules
too many haters.......hes good for that style, has a good left hand also
nice to see guitar center has comedy bits during the show..... lets real drummers prepare and loosen up
Because he used to have a TV show, he has an awesome clothing line, in Blink and survived a plane crash. Thats why.
Travis the best punk drummer ❤
i think it was playing backwards around the 0:23 mark. thats why it sounded so off. i think!
on the bright side, the jerome flood II solo in the featured video section is really good
Travis is in all honesty, the perfect drumming idol for those that don't play drums.
I've never heard so many alternating singles played in a solo before. Almost every fill around the kit is alternating singles.
.....WOW....... amaaaaaazing.......
oo by the way, this is no drum solo, this is just travis barker playing with blink182's-down song at a show
Travis barker is amazing and gorgeous dont hate
everytime i watch him play i feel very bad for the drums. its like theyre gonna break any second
totally agree with you. typical example of non musicians who make a musician famous. this guy can drum (my 5 year old cousin can also drum though) but he dont deserve to be compared to or idolised like one of the greats.
You're only disliking because both versions of the song are on at once so you can't hear the drumming properly
I give up on Travis Barker.... I could seriously play what he's doing in this video when I was 13
why do drums have to be incredibly complicated in order to be "great?" as long as the drummer creates a beat that is their own style and matches the aura of the song, then why criticize so much? Some of the best songs are so simple, because any more than that and they wouldn't be as great. He's doing what he loves, so why hate.
I agree its not the best Ive seen from him but the fact that the music was added to the video over the original audio track makes it sound a lot sloppier than it actually is
Hit Hard. That seems to be the only directive he plays by.
Yea buddy ! You go Travis. ROCK ON DUDE !
These comments are funny. Okay, if this is the first video of Travis you watch.. I agree that this isn't such a good performance.. but look to the drums with Adrian Young and just many of the other stuff. Not comparing with others, but he deserves to be one of the best drummers (along with the technical good ones like Mike Portnoy and Thomas Lang etc)
i love all the haters for travis. he is good because he doesn't do the simple pattern throughout the song. Very much like Kieth Moon
Those who claim he's the best drummer in the world, please go and watch
Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Virgil Donati, Marco Minneman, Buddy Rich, Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Tony Royster Jr, Mike Mangini, Thomas Lang, Horacio Hernandez, Jojo Mayer etc.
Travis Barker can bash all he wants but I'm still waiting for the day where he can play a polyrhythm/ostinato or maybe odd time signatures.
@WTFyouTRYING4 'Down' its off the self titled album :-)
hes basically on the same level with different style.(i do like Rev very much please consider that. The hype is because people who actually wanted to see Travis, good or bad, they came here to watch it...then all the dirrty kids came out to express there underdeveloped opinions on people they don't even like.
Dear god... How this guy could be called a good drummer is beyond me... It's like he's stuck at the fast and loud phase, and refuses to enter the "Finesse is a good thing sometimes" phase.
i can't help that you are trying to tell people who like somebody not to like them and then you realize your opinion has no weight where it matters
He's a machine
I think I've always thought that bro.. just never thought it out.. greeeeat..
i agree and the fact that he appears more skilled to non-drummers bc of how low the drums are and how high the cymbals are.
