Had the US/Russia and China been more cooperative in the science of space exploration we'd have been shown videos like this in the 1970's and current interests would be on development of interstellar vehicles and Martian habitation instead of rock samples and another "weird moon" thesis.

Maybe, but the competition no doubt moved things forward, at a dangerous pace for some astronauts/cosmonauts, but it did force the two powers to invest more than they may have. Elon Beoing Bezo's, it seems that having several sticks in the fire is Man's way.

Radiation damage is a function of rate and length of time of exposure. Sunburn is literally a type of radiation exposure. You can get the same sunburn from a long time in medium Sun as a short time in strong Sun. You can lengthen your safe level of exposure with things like hats, long clothes and sun-block cream. You can lengthen your safe time outside the Earth's atmosphere by spending most of your time inside a metal tin, and just a few hours outside in a space suit. A few long-haul flights or a few dental x-rays increase your risk of cancer about equivalent to the extra doses received by the Apollo astronauts. People who work at nuclear power stations or live in places with high natural background radiation (like Cornwall in the UK) get more radiation than those astronauts. All radiation isn't instant death cooties.
