Hey Leonardo, thanks so much for watching! I agree with your comments about the Hotel Penn, great staff and location. Hopefully we'll be traveling again very soon. Wishing you the best!
So sad to see the hotel closed, visited NYC this week for the first time in over 21 years, and I snapped some photos of the old hotel in-case it does get torn down. I just wish I could've experienced it once. Thanks for posting this -- its now a part of history.
Couldn't agree more, Sam. With a little investment, Vornado could have turned the Hotel Penn into the 5-star property it used to be. Sad that they want to replace it with a glass and steel skyscraper. Glad you got some photos though. Thanks for watching and happy holidays!
So sad to hear that the Hotel Penn is being demolished. We stayed there the very first time I'd ever been to NYC (in 2019) and it was right across from Madison Square Gardens, which was holding the event we were attending. We really enjoyed our stay there! Staff were great and the lobby was beautiful. We got bumped up to one of the renovated rooms & it was lovely.
I agree with you, such a tragedy they're knocking down such an iconic hotel and replacing it with a boring glass and steel tower. Like you said, Hotel Penn was beautiful with a great staff, many who had spent their careers there. Affordable NYC hotels (particularly in Manhattan) are an endangered species.
@@JonathanBrowneMenzies We went to NYC again later that year but stayed at a different hotel. It was adequate, but nothing special. And I guess I can confess this now! We were going to visit the Empire State Building & I had a roaring headache so we went to the little store in the lobby of the Hotel Penn to buy a 2-pack of Tylenol. We remembered how nice the lady had been on our previous visit. Then we sat in the lobby for a little while until the painkiller kicked in! I will always remember it fondly.
Hey pjp mf, thanks so much for watching! I agree with you, can't beat the location and value proposition. Look forward to visiting Ireland again, been to Dublin and Limerick several times and love the Irish culture. Luckily there are many Irish pubs everywhere in the USA which bring the memories back, but nothing compares to waking up to the green grass and morning dew of the Emerald Isle!

I agree, can't beat the location and the architectural significance of the building. Originally, the owner was going to replace the Hotel Penn with a skyscraper, but those plans have reportedly been put on hold. Send some sun over from Guam, and thanks so much for watching!

Sehr traurig für uns Art-Deco-Hotelliebhaber. wow really enjoyed seeing this since the hotel has now been demolished. there was history there as there was for the original Penn station. I guess it had to go because the alphabet generations absolutely have no love or like for what is not modern minimalism. its only about charging stations, high end coffee makers, gyms and hi technology all throughout ... digital, digital... digital, BTW, as to location-location- location there is now a Fairfield Hotel right across the street from the new Moynihan train station on 33rd street between 8th and 9th Aves.

Hello, Is hotel Pennsylvenia still open? I stayed there in '13. This summer I want to go back... Due to google it is permanent closed??!?!?? Hoope to hear form you! Stephan. Netherlands.
Hello Stephan, thanks for watching! Unfortunately, it's true, the Hotel Pennsylvania is permanently closed. The owners, Vornado Realty Trust, plan to demolish the hotel and replace it with a modern skyscraper. A great loss for budget minded travelers who enjoyed NYC's grand old hotels. The New Yorker Hotel has a similar vibe, but it's a bit more expensive. Wishing you a great trip to NYC!
Hey Jeff, thanks so much for this info! I thought the luggage room looked a little too elegant LOL. Great hotel, I hope the Pennsylvania is around for years to come.
It looks pretty dingy, not a nice hotel by any stretch really. I still would have enjoyed staying there as it's 100 year old hotel in NYC and has great location. What other famous old hotels in New York should I consider staying at next time?
Thanks for commenting, Mod! I was hoping they would invest in the property and restore the Hotel Penn to its former glory. The New Yorker Hotel is similar, grand art deco lobby and great location. Wishing you all the best in the new year!
The McKim, Mead and White designed Pennsylvania Hotel that faced directly opposite the original Penn Station, which had been the largest hotel in the world when it opened, and managed to survive all these years is now just a big hole in the ground. Gone! Went there today (9/30/2023) to see what might be left, nothing except traces of the building facade where the two subway entrances were. And what will take its place? Another office tower, of course. The hotel was actually protected under the city’s landmark status, but THE DEMS who are running New York into the ground these days do not pay attention to any laws. For the right price, they will selectively apply the law to political enemies, and give their filthy rich friends a pass. I stayed there once, got a nice room for relatives visiting New York. Your review is quite accurate. Even in its modernized state (the original lobby was two stories high, with a large glass ceiling, before they lowered it to make a second floor), it was nice. Check out pre-renovation pics of the entrance area and lobby, this was palace!
Such a tragedy that Hotel Penn is gone. The place was an architectural masterpiece and provided affordable accommodation to tourists. Unfortunately, it's becoming impossible to find budget hotels in Manhattan. Thanks so much for watching and for the info!
Hey Did West, thanks so much for watching! I agree with you, for the location and great rate, I'm more than happy to sleep on a bed that isn't 100% perfect. Wishing you all the best on your next travel adventure!
Excellent video, hitting the like button doesn't do it justice! Big shock with the $35 a night resort fee, that's gonna really hit your pocket for longer stays!
Hey Steve, thanks so much for watching! I agree, the $35 resort fee is pretty ridiculous considering you don't really get much for it. I wish they would do away with the resort fee and just raise the room rate for transparency reasons. But still, this was a good deal at $99. Wishing you all the best during this time Steve, be safe my friend!
Jonathan Browne Menzies thanks man, I appreciate that. I really don’t get the added resort fees at all, it’s just a way to get more dollars out of you! Lol I was due back in NYC in March but that trip had to be cancelled of course, hoping we get over the worst of this soon for everyone’s sake. Hope you’re keeping safe and well, I’ll be back over as soon as possible. Keep up the good work my friend!
I agree, Jmcuoco 99. I wish they would invest in the building and restore the Hotel Pennsylvania to its former glory. Hoping for a Hail Mary, thanks for watching!
Hey xroadrig, thanks so much for watching! They didn't pay me at all. As you can see from my other reviews, value and price is the most important criteria for me when selecting a hotel. I just try to give my perspective, but people can make their own judgements. Wishing you the best, and thanks for the comment.
Jonathan Browne Menzies value and price is the most important criteria for me either BUT if I get a syringe with blood in the bed, that is NOT ok for any price
Sad that it will be torn down after 100 years, but that place was a rat´s nest. There is this "Penn Hotel horror movie" on youtube, I have filmed basically the same with my own smartphone. Stayed there in April 2016 for two nights and it was disgusting, Filthy, unfriendly staff, and simply a piece of junk. A bargain for central Manhattan, yes. The aircon was no aircon, it just blew hot air and was completely full of mold. Dirty windows, dirty curtains, dirty everything. No pillows covers, I used my shirt to cover it. Luckily, that was fixed the next day.
Really a shame they're just knocking it down rather than making the investment needed to bring Hotel Penn back to its former glory. I was reading Yelp and some commenters left reviews similar to yours. My room was dated, but clean and everything worked. For $99, I was very happy. Sadly, NYC and Manhattan in particular will become more difficult for the middle class to afford with the Hotel Penn's closure. Thanks for watching, Ray! Wishing you all the best!
Me too! Hopefully they'll have a change of heart, but these developers only seem to care about the almighty dollar.....not a care in the world when it comes to preserving historic structures.
Hey Gary, thanks so much for commenting! That wasn't my experience, hope it was just a one time thing. I know The Hotel Penn is in the process of renovating all of their rooms. Hotel Pennsylvania is considered to be a budget/tourist class hotel in NYC, maybe equivalent to Red Roof Inn or Super 8. I was very happy with the hotel, location, and value. Sure, it could be better, but in NYC you'll pay for it. I would rather save on the room rate and have money to spend on Broadway tickets and restaurants. But to each his own. Wishing you the best on your next trip to NYC!
I agree Hellen, such a tragedy! I love these old art deco hotels. At least we still have The New Yorker, for now anyway. Wishing you a great summer ahead and thanks so much for watching!
Hey Paul, thanks so much for watching! I liked the historical aspect of the Hotel Pennsylvania, you have to wonder what ghosts are still haunting the property. It took me a while to edit this video, the footage is from before the lockdown started. I bet things are extra spooky now, with the hotel mostly vacant. Be safe my friend!
This scammers took money beforehand and never gave it back even tho it was in contract that is refundable..now nobody is answering the phone and email.. Just scammers.. I've told that I will not be charged beforehand..but I was.. Stay away
Hey Michal, sorry to hear about your situation. If you feel there was a misunderstanding, maybe try disputing the charges with your credit card company. At least that might get the hotel's attention so they'll return your call. Thanks for watching and I wish you the best.
Hey Martin, thanks so much for watching! I understand it's not a luxury hotel, but the location was great and the rate was unbeatable for midtown Manhattan. My room was clean and the Hotel Penn is safe, those are the most important things for me. Did you end up finding a better hotel at a comparable rate? I'm always open to suggestions, thanks for commenting!
Ahhh sorry to hear that, Green Giant. I had a good experience at Hotel Penn, loved the location and wallet friendly price. The place is closed now, and not too many bargains left in Manhattan. Thanks for watching!
Sorry to hear that Oskar. Hotel Penn was a tourist class hotel, not luxury. For my money, the value proposition was unbeatable. Tough to find a $100 room in Manhattan these days. Wishing you the best and thanks for watching!
How much did they pay you for this review???Front desk (after over an hr in line.....) rude. SHitty. Run down, drab, average rooms. THis HOtel needs shut down. And look like it's being liquidated. Sad given the history. Here's to the future!
Hey Renee, thanks for watching! I had a great experience at Hotel Pennsylvania. I liked the location, historical building, and tremendous value including free breakfast. I found the staff to be helpful and polite ;-) There are many luxury hotels in Manhattan with more modern amenities, although they don't come cheap. Unfortunately, Vornado Realty Trust is replacing the hotel with a skyscraper.
Wirklich traurig. Wie ich wünschte, sie würden das Hotel Pennsylvania erhalten, anstatt ein so schönes historisches Wahrzeichen abzureißen. Vielen Dank fürs Zuschauen!

Stayed twice with my 2 kids on holiday from London 16 and 15 years ago loved it but then I would have slept on a bench
Hey Did West, thanks so much for watching! I agree with you, for the location and great rate, I'm more than happy to sleep on a bed that isn't 100% perfect. Wishing you all the best on your next travel adventure!
@@JonathanBrowneMenzies cheers mate
Shame they're gonna tear this place down. Sure its drab and outdated but it could be something great again.
I agree, Jmcuoco 99. I wish they would invest in the building and restore the Hotel Pennsylvania to its former glory. Hoping for a Hail Mary, thanks for watching!
How much did they pay you ?
Hey xroadrig, thanks so much for watching! They didn't pay me at all. As you can see from my other reviews, value and price is the most important criteria for me when selecting a hotel. I just try to give my perspective, but people can make their own judgements. Wishing you the best, and thanks for the comment.
Jonathan Browne Menzies value and price is the most important criteria for me either BUT if I get a syringe with blood in the bed, that is NOT ok for any price
I visited in 2016 it was the best
I agree Debra, great hotel and location. Thanks so much for watching, wishing you happy holidays!
It makes me sad that a greedy developer plans to destroy this building 😞
Me too! Hopefully they'll have a change of heart, but these developers only seem to care about the almighty dollar.....not a care in the world when it comes to preserving historic structures.
Best Hotel
I agree Aniket, Pennsylvania Hotel is one of my favorites. Wishing you the best!
Stayed here, looks good in the lobby, room I got was disgusting, holes in the walls, door to room very flimsy, overall very dirty, also bed bugs
@15:28 a man wearing a t shirt in january in nyc.😂😅😊🎉
LOL, I would have caught a cold. Thanks for watching, JR!
.....2023' Closed and Torn-down.....Sad....!!!....:(
I agree Hellen, such a tragedy! I love these old art deco hotels. At least we still have The New Yorker, for now anyway. Wishing you a great summer ahead and thanks so much for watching!
More like Hotel Transylvania .... *spooky*
i totally forgot not the whole world is on lock down
Hey Paul, thanks so much for watching!
I stayed there in 2015. The worst hotel ive been in, couldnt stay there for more than 1 day.
@@JonathanBrowneMenzies we found a much better hotel, it was more expensive, but a 10/10 hotel. It was park central hotel near central park
Stayed there in 2016. Horrific
Ahhh sorry to hear that, Green Giant. I had a good experience at Hotel Penn, loved the location and wallet friendly price. The place is closed now, and not too many bargains left in Manhattan. Thanks for watching!
I had a room that looked like shit, it was hidious.
Traurig.
Wirklich traurig. Wie ich wünschte, sie würden das Hotel Pennsylvania erhalten, anstatt ein so schönes historisches Wahrzeichen abzureißen. Vielen Dank fürs Zuschauen!
@@JonathanBrowneMenzies I live there für three nights in May 1987, you can see the hotel from 7:02 till 7:17 here ruclips.net/video/E_qU8UvFmb4/видео.html

I appreciate the feedback, Max! Slowly but surely, I'm trying to improve my RUclips skills. Thanks for sticking with the video and for commenting!
