After the chip shortage, many are looking for diversification. Even if we get a good share of EV chips, it will be useful. I think ISMC investment is more significant. They announced it and are already a significant player in semiconductor. Though they r not exactly Intel but now after accqustion by Intel .they r it's subsidiary. I think India will be making 24 nm and beyond semiconductor. Higher end smaller chips don't think so. I think we can accquire a significant share of world market. As bigger chips are used in more quantity.Cars,toster,microwave,ac,remote,tv,washing machine and everything electrical nowadays.
TSMC is also building manufacturing capacity in India. I wish that they would also close their facilities in mainland China and move those operations to India as well.

Even tsmc doesn't make that much profit considering the level of capital they invest in foundry. It would be impossible for India to sustain that level of investment.

The Indian semiconductor dream will be realised if and when the government invites one of the top 3 semiconductor fabs to the table for a realistic and promising goal of making semiconductors based on sub 28nm process nodes in India which still looks like a decade away since the supporting infrastructure is lacking by miles.
But that's the thing. By focusing on easier nodes they can get the basic infrastructure up and start generating revenue which, with a bit of lube, could attract the big players, which makes it financially viable to go the last (and hardest) mile with infrastructure.
True, older nodes is something that India needs to shift focus on and get them going quickly off the ground, because processes for those are well established, less sophisticate, and importantly more forgiving as compared to the newest nodes. Everything upto 28nm, could If executed well result in a better adaptability and higher yields, even though at the cost of lower profits, but hey as long as it's some percentage loss on investment in return for learning a new trade it's worth it.

The big 3 are building big fabs In us worth 20-30b usd and in Taiwan Korea and few in Europe. Doubt if they will invest in India given the erratic power supply (demonstrated recently) problems with water labor laws and inefficient beauracracy fabs are no small deal given the hurdles and protests many industries have faced I doubt whether they will risk setting up a fab

They are actually famous for it, even in China they have installed nets so that no Chinese worker jumps off of building and ki// themselves. Also the place where they are working is known to have large number of Commies, so you can expect such things. Also I think the real reason for big names not coming to India is that India does not have any experience in it, and they (TSMC, Samsung and Intel) will be producing 3-7nm chips, so they would want to go where people have experience for it, such as USA, Taiwan, S. Korea, etc. Also the amount of incentive being provided in India is tiny in comparison to what US, Taiwan, etc are providing.

Hello, Mr. Jon. I have a question. Why is suddenly there's a rush to build semiconductor industries all over the world? Firstly, ASML-TSMC duo is far ahead in technology and I don't see how anyone, anyone on earth can catch up with them and hope to make a profit as well. Secondly, I believe all these chip shortage, high chip cost are rather an indication of a looming stagflation. So, I deeply doubt these semiconductor "ventures" will actually be able to turn a profit by the time they become ready to roll. So, why are these companies hell-bent on older semiconductor technology and not invest on coming trend like micro-electronics?
High end nodes aren't needed for vast majority of applications. Older tech is mature and works out of the box. It will serve most applications and will provide independence from chinese invasion of taiwan, which is inevitable. Being neutral has worked out well for india.

Because old nodes are reliable, cheap and more than good enough for a lot of commercial and industrial applications. Cutting edge nodes are reuqired obly for latest high tech consumer devices like PCs and smartphones.
Well maybe Intel or Samsung will be able to catch-up with TSMC. They are also big buyers of ASML latest EUV equipment. And chips with the latest nodes are usually used for flagship products e.g. phones with a starting price of $800. But there is also a low and mid range tier for phones using older cheaper nodes. Much more affordable for people in developing nations like India.
Good initiative for Indian gov't. But I think that fabless design company is better for Indian chip industry than fab factory. India already has many good and experienced chip designers for chip design outsourcing service. But not many trained semiconductor process engineers. And fab is extremely expensive to build and operate, capital intensive. Capital is very precious resource India is in great need and should invest wisely and frugally. Fabless chip industry is much cheaper to bring it up with less capital investment. IMHO, Indian company like Meditek or UniSOC is more viable than TSMC or Global Foundry. Chip design is where the money is. Just thought.
Having up to date full stack semiconductior design, manufacturing, and packaging capability and capacity is a national security matter for a country that aspires to be a world power.
Yes and that's why government is bringing another incentive, DLI (Design linked incentive) to get more and more indigenous design companies. PLI for hardware related work. DLI for software related work.
Vertical integration is always good for any nation to be self reliant, increase job opportunities and expertise and reduce security risks. But the point u have mentioned, i don't think india is any better in chip design either, we don't even have a single big fabless company like mediatek, Qualcomm or unisoc and so like. Indians are working under foreign companies and do magic there but it's more of a credit of company than individuals.

Don’t know if it is a waste of money with so many countries targeting to build what seems like cookie cutter semiconductor fabs. At the end don’t know if it will be a gain for the semiconductor companies (more profit) or for the consumers (low prices) .
It's not a waaste of money. It allows a country to reduce risk while also allowing supply increases in the global market which should help with stablity and pricing.
It's mostly about not being fully dependent on other countries. Right now, if China manages to invade Taiwan successfully the entire planet would be dependent on them for all high-end chips, including military usages. Or imagine a country gets as many sanctions as Russia. They'd effectively be unable to use modern technology without their own semiconductor suppliers Countries want their own semiconductor manufacturers, even if they're worse than TSMC, in order to loosen that dependency if need be.

Sounds like at least this Foxconn effort is mostly a pipedream. Sure, it's possible to do something outside its proven scope of expertise... But generation upon generation upon generation and so on later than what it has done before? With each generation, there is a lot more than just shrinking the traces... There are also new techniques and specialized equipment with each generation, and what worked for one generation doesn't necessarily support the technologies for the next newer generation. There's an enormous knowledge gap to bridge when proven experience is 100-200mm and somehow hoping to build 65nm. And, even that is far, far away from 28nm and smaller. This video never mentions what kinds of chips India wants to make and for what purposes. Maybe an Indian chip fab could set reasonable goals and make cheap chips for its automotive industry. But devices like smartphones? Unless you're talking about smartphones the size and capability of what existing aroun 2000 which was long before touchscreens, I doubt there is much chance of success.

No, in display manufacturing 28 and even higher nodes are mostly used as of now. In Mobile and Computer Processor making less than 10nm is coming now slowly. It's absolutely cutting edge and very costly as yoh said 100bn is being poured into it. I think here as manufacturers don't have any prior experience, it's better for us to target easier nodes at first. High quality nodes will take more time, money and effort to mature. After 2-3 plants start manufacturing display units in mass, it'll be easier for us to invite Intel, Samsung, TSMC for making cutting edge Semiconductors. As 9f now there's not even a single semiconductor is being manufactured here, even though designing is biggest industry here by all big firms like Intel, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, Samsung. It's time to start just manufacturing for us now.

All big announcements coming out of India should be taken with pinch of salt especially when the country has elections in the state its current PM is from. Running itself pose a great challenge but if India wants to develop it’s next generation node indigenously, I am not even sure whether the students from the above mentioned institutions are well equipped. While they are encouraging the semiconductor investment in India which I appreciate, along with it they should also try to fill in this educational gap. Not only provide world class education to the above mentioned niche institutions but many other Engineering and Applied Sciences institutions to match the requirements of the Semiconductor industries which is obviously far more higher than the students passing with the right skillset out from the above mentioned institutions. If you are talking about service based which our country has always been it is possible to train people to take care of equipments and routine quality checks on the products manufactured. But when you want to innovate in this space you would need highly skilled PhD. and MSc., in Applied Physics, Applied Chemistry and Mechatronics which India is lacking in. A training on Semiconductor manufacturing alone will not be enough for you to innovate.

Doubts might arise about the capability of Foxconn. The firm hasn't been known as chip manufacturer (it is what India wants now), but is ambitious enough to climb up to the top of "chip" manufacturing ladder. The firm can be relied upon to manage the supply chain hassles in this business,
I think ISMC investment is more significant.
They announced it and are already a significant player in semiconductor.
Though they r not exactly Intel but now after accqustion by Intel .they r it's subsidiary.
I think India will be making 24 nm and beyond semiconductor.
Higher end smaller chips don't think so.

Even tsmc doesn't make that much profit considering the level of capital they invest in foundry. It would be impossible for India to sustain that level of investment.

Secondly this about creating a semi conductor infrastructure not for strategic needs as none these companies will manufacture for Indian government. For that government needs to upgrade SCL Chandigarh.
The Indian semiconductor dream will be realised if and when the government invites one of the top 3 semiconductor fabs to the table for a realistic and promising goal of making semiconductors based on sub 28nm process nodes in India which still looks like a decade away since the supporting infrastructure is lacking by miles.
But that's the thing. By focusing on easier nodes they can get the basic infrastructure up and start generating revenue which, with a bit of lube, could attract the big players, which makes it financially viable to go the last (and hardest) mile with infrastructure.
True, older nodes is something that India needs to shift focus on and get them going quickly off the ground, because processes for those are well established, less sophisticate, and importantly more forgiving as compared to the newest nodes.

If executed well result in a better adaptability and higher yields, even though at the cost of lower profits, but hey as long as it's some percentage loss on investment in return for learning a new trade it's worth it.

The big 3 are building big fabs In us worth 20-30b usd and in Taiwan Korea and few in Europe. Doubt if they will invest in India given the erratic power supply (demonstrated recently) problems with water labor laws and inefficient beauracracy fabs are no small deal given the hurdles and protests many industries have faced I doubt whether they will risk setting up a fab

They are actually famous for it, even in China they have installed nets so that no Chinese worker jumps off of building and ki// themselves.
Also the place where they are working is known to have large number of Commies, so you can expect such things.
Also I think the real reason for big names not coming to India is that India does not have any experience in it, and they (TSMC, Samsung and Intel) will be producing 3-7nm chips, so they would want to go where people have experience for it, such as USA, Taiwan, S. Korea, etc.
Also the amount of incentive being provided in India is tiny in comparison to what US, Taiwan, etc are providing.

Hello, Mr. Jon. I have a question. Why is suddenly there's a rush to build semiconductor industries all over the world?
Firstly, ASML-TSMC duo is far ahead in technology and I don't see how anyone, anyone on earth can catch up with them and hope to make a profit as well.
Secondly, I believe all these chip shortage, high chip cost are rather an indication of a looming stagflation. So, I deeply doubt these semiconductor "ventures" will actually be able to turn a profit by the time they become ready to roll.
So, why are these companies hell-bent on older semiconductor technology and not invest on coming trend like micro-electronics?
High end nodes aren't needed for vast majority of applications. Older tech is mature and works out of the box. It will serve most applications and will provide independence from chinese invasion of taiwan, which is inevitable. Being neutral has worked out well for india.

Because old nodes are reliable, cheap and more than good enough for a lot of commercial and industrial applications. Cutting edge nodes are reuqired obly for latest high tech consumer devices like PCs and smartphones.
Automotive, defence, aerospace & low end consumer electronics like Washing machines use bigger & reliable nodes.
Well maybe Intel or Samsung will be able to catch-up with TSMC. They are also big buyers of ASML latest EUV equipment. And chips with the latest nodes are usually used for flagship products e.g. phones with a starting price of $800. But there is also a low and mid range tier for phones using older cheaper nodes. Much more affordable for people in developing nations like India.
Hope they can provide a good alternative as china continues to fall apart.

Good initiative for Indian gov't. But I think that fabless design company is better for Indian chip industry than fab factory. India already has many good and experienced chip designers for chip design outsourcing service. But not many trained semiconductor process engineers. And fab is extremely expensive to build and operate, capital intensive. Capital is very precious resource India is in great need and should invest wisely and frugally. Fabless chip industry is much cheaper to bring it up with less capital investment. IMHO, Indian company like Meditek or UniSOC is more viable than TSMC or Global Foundry. Chip design is where the money is. Just thought.
Having up to date full stack semiconductior design, manufacturing, and packaging capability and capacity is a national security matter for a country that aspires to be a world power.
Yes and that's why government is bringing another incentive, DLI (Design linked incentive) to get more and more indigenous design companies.

Vertical integration is always good for any nation to be self reliant, increase job opportunities and expertise and reduce security risks. But the point u have mentioned, i don't think india is any better in chip design either, we don't even have a single big fabless company like mediatek, Qualcomm or unisoc and so like. Indians are working under foreign companies and do magic there but it's more of a credit of company than individuals.

Don’t know if it is a waste of money with so many countries targeting to build what seems like cookie cutter semiconductor fabs. At the end don’t know if it will be a gain for the semiconductor companies (more profit) or for the consumers (low prices) .
It's not a waaste of money. It allows a country to reduce risk while also allowing supply increases in the global market which should help with stablity and pricing.
It's mostly about not being fully dependent on other countries. Right now, if China manages to invade Taiwan successfully the entire planet would be dependent on them for all high-end chips, including military usages.
Or imagine a country gets as many sanctions as Russia. They'd effectively be unable to use modern technology without their own semiconductor suppliers
Countries want their own semiconductor manufacturers, even if they're worse than TSMC, in order to loosen that dependency if need be.

Worst decision by government of India was to sign an FTA with ASEAN. Geopolitical perspective, it was alright.
But bussiness perspective, it only widened the huge trade deficit India already had with these countries.
Now all electronics companies have access to the Indian market from ASEAN which is why companies are reshuffling towards ASEAN countries for policy, skill and other conducive business environment purposes and India is a loss making entity in the process.
Vietnam received 100 Billion dollars in FDI in FY22 whereas India just 83 Billion dollars. One must wonder that how a country not even 1/5 size of India has achieved that.
Poor execution in trade agreements leads to this.
IMO Vietnam received huge fdi because its nearby China and its more compact than India,making transport of goods and manufacturing easier

TATA needs to do something here as well along with ISMC. The thing is Vedanta announced a lot of things about it. I was overjoyed after hearing 20bn total investment by them. After after this video, I feel that's very dim possibility. Anyway, we need to start now our Chip game.
Sounds like at least this Foxconn effort is mostly a pipedream. Sure, it's possible to do something outside its proven scope of expertise... But generation upon generation upon generation and so on later than what it has done before? With each generation, there is a lot more than just shrinking the traces... There are also new techniques and specialized equipment with each generation, and what worked for one generation doesn't necessarily support the technologies for the next newer generation.
There's an enormous knowledge gap to bridge when proven experience is 100-200mm and somehow hoping to build 65nm. And, even that is far, far away from 28nm and smaller.
This video never mentions what kinds of chips India wants to make and for what purposes. Maybe an Indian chip fab could set reasonable goals and make cheap chips for its automotive industry. But devices like smartphones? Unless you're talking about smartphones the size and capability of what existing aroun 2000 which was long before touchscreens, I doubt there is much chance of success.

These Fabs aren't for smartphones. These are for connected tech IOT devices. Automobile industry, white goods etc.

28nm seems a bit outdated ... TSMC is setting up a 5nm fab in US and has pumped 100bn$ into 2nm technology .... its better than nothing i guess
No, in display manufacturing 28 and even higher nodes are mostly used as of now. In Mobile and Computer Processor making less than 10nm is coming now slowly. It's absolutely cutting edge and very costly as yoh said 100bn is being poured into it. I think here as manufacturers don't have any prior experience, it's better for us to target easier nodes at first. High quality nodes will take more time, money and effort to mature. After 2-3 plants start manufacturing display units in mass, it'll be easier for us to invite Intel, Samsung, TSMC for making cutting edge Semiconductors. As 9f now there's not even a single semiconductor is being manufactured here, even though designing is biggest industry here by all big firms like Intel, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, Samsung.
It's time to start just manufacturing for us now.

Vedanta wants the indian govt to implement a ban on import of displays and semiconductors so that indian consumers have no choice but to buy OEM products run by vedanta. This, they say is the only way to ensure the investments are viable. Vedantas bilateral agreements were so vague that the indian govt refused to offer any incentives.

The real risk is new materials and processes that could wipe out investment in an expensive fab in a press release on the technology. That is the risk because new emerging technologies may be cheaper and faster.

The incentives are production linked, so if they aren't successful then they don't qualify for incentives.
Government effectively giving away 1000 acres of land on lease is not very rare in India as if you have even basic connection in parliament and stuff, you have it under the pretense of some industry. Also 99 years is one of the most common terms for land leases.

All big announcements coming out of India should be taken with pinch of salt especially when the country has elections in the state its current PM is from. Vedanta has a shaky history and that should be factored in to this announcements. Foxconn had made such huge promises in US as well which never took off the ground.

India is a country famous for corruption and bureaucracy, I don't know how well this venture will go to be honest. Their brightest people already left for US, UK and other western countries for better job, better and safer life.
It’s not quite right entirely.Look at the bright side. Recently India got its 100th unicorn. It’s export are on the record high. Bangalore is the on the biggest IT hub after Silicon Valley. India would definitely become leader in Semiconductor in next decade
@@vikashgauravvkg I agree with Vic running a semiconductor fab isn’t a easy feat you would need highly skilled talents where you could get from IITs NITs and IISC, most of the students from those educational institutions go abroad and settle. Running itself pose a great challenge but if India wants to develop it’s next generation node indigenously, I am not even sure whether the students from the above mentioned institutions are well equipped. While they are encouraging the semiconductor investment in India which I appreciate, along with it they should also try to fill in this educational gap. Not only provide world class education to the above mentioned niche institutions but many other Engineering and Applied Sciences institutions to match the requirements of the Semiconductor industries which is obviously far more higher than the students passing with the right skillset out from the above mentioned institutions. P.S. I am from India and now working in ASML.

@@aaabbb7121 There are two ways to see it do you wanna be service based or else do you wanna be technology leader in this space like TSMC, Intel. If you are talking about service based which our country has always been it is possible to train people to take care of equipments and routine quality checks on the products manufactured. But when you want to innovate in this space you would need highly skilled PhD. and MSc., in Applied Physics, Applied Chemistry and Mechatronics which India is lacking in. A training on Semiconductor manufacturing alone will not be enough for you to innovate.

I think it's a good initiative(PLI).this scheme doesn't spend money before production. It give incentive on amount of production.
