I've had it happen far too often -- these days I try and dive in as I'm taking the shot and immediately get a hand on the spear to pin it to the sea floor and get my hands in their gills ASAP. Nothing worse than the flopper not deploying due to rocks and sand, or even worse, the big flatties managing to near themselves apart wriggling off.

They're easiest to spot on low tide because you can cruize around on the surface without having to dive down. They also come in to shallow water getting ready to feed on bait fish as the water level is dropping so your chances of coming across one are higher.

Yeah definitely! Flathead can be challenging to land without a barbed spear tip or a hand spear.
