- Are some spots bad or was I just a bad diver when I dived them? Sometimes you go diving and it seems you see nothing but we all have that one mate who will always pull a fish out of a seemingly dead spot. Perhaps these spots aren't bad, we can just improve on our spearfishing and may be worth a visit again. This video shows how when I went back to one of these 'bad' spots I got a surprise!
Let me know in the comments if you have gone back to spots years later and had success.
Also for those watching around the world, similar species would be:
USA - White sea bass
Mediterranean - Corvina or Ombria
South Africa - Kob or Daga Salmon

Seeing them schooled up so tight like that is amazing. I’ve seen them on my sounder before, but now I can get an actual image of what is happening under the boat. Very awesome video. 👍🏻🤠🎣
You should jump in on them Mikey 👌
Hands down best spearfishing channel on YT. Keep pumping out the vids dude, you’re quality is amazing. Great mix of footage with genuine knowledge. Love it

Cheers Jools!
Good videos bro. Very impressed with your videos.
luv your vids, keep up the great work!
Amazing vid dan, love your work mate
having a spearfishing channel can be tricky, due to the fact that is a really controvertial way of fishing, due to the fact that a lot of people dont like it, but i see this videos and i can tell you that this guy is going to go far
I had a feeling it was from the "corvina" family and it is! It´s from the Sciaenidae family. It´s a kings hunt here in Portugal.
Awesome video! I have never spear fished but looks like alot of fun!
Should definitely try it sometime mate!
two very good big fish
We also have carvina on the attlantic east coast in france
Really great videos
Cheers Brett!
Great vid! Btw, at 4:09 you look like the young Sam Winchester😄
So good please upload more
Fantastic channel!!!
Thanks mate!
In South Africa we call them dagga salmon
Awesome vid man, keep it up!
More, more, MORE please !
Another excellent story supported with QUALITY action footage. Love your work Daniel - it sets the standard. The jewie cyclones had my palms sweating. I found a similar story going back to the places I started chasing jewies, bass and XOS flathead as a kid. Right conditions, tides, weather, time of day, (line/leader/bait/lures) etc are often the key that unlocks the results - experience makes all the difference.
Funny how there was just one large jewie under that log in the Tweed. It didn't even twitch when you shot it made me think it was a joke at first and you'd picked it up offshore, but you hit it in the sweet spot - perfect placement. Have you seen many big jewies like that all on their own ? ? ? ? Do you remember if it was injured, or just a lone fish?
The vortexes certainly make it hard to hold your breath that’s for sure.
I think the fish may have been sick or injured internally with a hook perhaps as it was really skinny for its length and head size. A still target makes it easy to aim for the kill shot. They get them in the Tweed every now and then. There was a guy in the Tweed club who shot one 24kg under one of the bridges a long time ago. I also saw a young guy shoot one 20kg in the river about two weeks ago.
That makes sense !
Love your vids mate. If you don't mind sharing, what's your favourite spot in Tweed river and shore spots around Brissy (SC/GC) in general?
I don’t really have a favourite spot in the Tweed river, it just depends on what time of year and conditions really. Best shore dives around Brisbane IMO are Kingscliff & Yaroomba.
GREAT CATCH AT END MATE!
Cheers JBL
Superb video as always nice 1 Bro 👍👍👍👌👌👌👌
Thanks Denzil!
No problem Bro just bring new videos☺
Met him at the Blue Wild Expo this year, his wetsuits seemed top notch. Dive safe in the Med!
Super nice guy, looking forward to it.
This mans deserves at least 100k
Got some good news for ya
100k? This man should be the top of RUclips
Gold! Head over to brag :) Might be worth seeing if you can shoot a Meagre (Argyrosomus regis) around the Bay of Biscay or Golfe De Gascogne.
Awesome video!!!!!
Epic! Nice shot too!
Cheers Taka, when are we going to see some more mulloway misadventures?
Daniel Mann Will get around to it one of these days! Had double laptop failure so we are down to my iMac which makes things interesting... Just waiting for the new mbp to come out
Love your content 😁👌🏼
When he was pulling the mulloway up a shadow of a shark can be seen at 3:00
Silver fringe whaler to be exact 👀
Great video! These fis are anatomically similar to a much smaller sea trout we catch in the GOM and Atlantic Coast from the Carolinas to Mid Florida! Aren’t these fish in trouble from overfishing for their air bladder! Great video ‘s!
Really Enjoy the Videos!, can you please do a viedo of what speargun and a spear lenghth and all the tackle you use for each type of spearfishing thanks!😃
Can try one day!
Loved it man
What the hell I didn't think that the big ones went around with the small ones, I've only seen mulloway while diving once and there were 10-20 all roughly the same size and all small.
Sometimes you can have 10kg fish and 30kg fish in the same shoal.
Great video 👍
Unreal mate!!
Cheers Luke!
Why did you not shoot that grouper and went for the mulloway. I have been living in the Mediterranean my whole life and i dont know anything about mulloways. Are they better tasting orbmore prized than groupers. Here groupers are some of the most prized fish. Looking forward to your mediterranean video.
There are many groupers or as well call them in Australia ‘cod’ where we dive. Very easy to spear and when big they can get a bit chewy. Much different behaviour to the Mediterranean grouper from what I have seen in videos. There is one species we get called a purple cod which can be very difficult to spear when they get big but other than that all quite easy targets.
To be honest a 10kg cod would taste better for me than a 10kg mulloway, I just like to spread my target species out a bit.
Great video, enjoy Norway.😝back from my UK trip got back Sunday and am extremely jet lag 😴 Can't wait to be diving back in water where u don't get hyperthermia😂break a world record in Norway (HALIBUT) Bye👋
One day I’ll get back to Norway for a halibut!
Hi bro. New friend here. God bless
2.18 Mate What F Awesome dive! bet that ones in the archives
Was a bit of a surprise seeing the ‘reef’ move like that and then be a big ball of mulloway.
nice
i go bac there from time to time
Hey man
Not sure if’ll read this
But can u possibly do a vid of ur like best, biggest and greatest catches each year or something
Me personally i would love to see
Nice Daniel Mann
what the setttinf of you gopro?medium or narrow?thanks
great videos as always.thinking of making my own 😁
This was shot on wide. I have a long podcast coming out in a few weeks all about video for spearfishing.
@@DanielMann wow thanks. That would be nice. Thanks for noticing my coment.
No Scorpena this year. Was looking forward to a Scorpena 2018 video. :)
Btw, I lost a Turbot last week do to the flopper not folding out.
My first Turbot, and i lost it.!!! :(
I was in Norway hiking for that weekend. Perhaps next year I will return.
Devastating about the turbot, so delicious. When I short flat fish I always dive down and reach underneath the fish and open the flopper. Nearly always when shooting into sand the flopper will stay shut.
Daniel Mann good point.
I will remember That 😊
Hey Daniel,
great video, what reefs or ledges are there off tweed heads and what sites or references could I use to find some good new spots to spear Off the tweed coast.
Cheers.
Good luck with that.
Some spots might be only good at certain times, month, tides, wind, current , air pressure and other factors all play a role.
100% and with experience comes the knowledge of all those factors.
Awesome vid to
sick vid please make more
More in the works 👌
Great video mate!
Awesome footage as always.
You should come for a spearfishing visit in Israel
Thanks Uri, I would love to get to Israel one day.
Not white sea bass. You might want to correct that info. WSB is the giant Pacific Croaker. No relation to bass .
Hence why the description says SIMILAR species. These are quite similar to the White Sea bass found in California. Bass is also the most loosely used term in fish naming conventions ever. It could mean anything.
Nice video !! What brand and type speargun ?
Everything in this video are home made by myself 😎
@@DanielMann Awesome👌👌
When are you posting again ? 🤗
What do you recomend for a begginer (gun/spear) and any brands or specific gun/spear?
Also keep up the good work
Depends on where in the world you are diving really?
Daniel Mann UK
Any simple rail gun, 80-90cm, single band, thin spear.
Daniel Mann you know any good spots in the north east?
Never dived up that way myself but there has been some nice catches from competitions in Redcar and Dunbar
tweed river is funny. one day you wont see anything and the next you shoot 2 9kg jacks in one go (best day ever)
2 x 9kg jacks in the river???
Daniel Mann yeah 2 x 9kg Jack's shot in the tweed river at the car wreck. Closer to the mouth at fingal.
There are a few car wrecks along there. I’d love to see a photo!
Daniel Mann I'll send it on Instagram that and a flathead I got a couple of days later
mulloway look like California white sea bass or as we say in Texas big croaker
same family, mulloway are the 2nd biggest fish in the family (just behind the totoaba bass who are almost extinct), its also the same family as redfish black drum and all those fish.
I'm in Texas - only seen pics of California WSB - look like our croaker but much larger
Moral of the story is sometimes the fish are just where you find them.
Basically!
Im still dreaming to catch that big one😧
Hey Daniel, that's true! Happened to me in a place in my hometown in the south of Lima Peru, with a huge school of Peruvian Grunt, which are not huge but super hard to catch (they live in the most impossible rough spots) and are really good eating (check the first scene at ruclips.net/video/hDBtvaNA8WE/видео.html). But the other reality is that every place has a natural variability and randomness. Some times even fish that are territorial move along a variety of spots and you may find them or not in a certain place. I'd say a good spot is one that holds higher odds of becoming a shelter or feeding ground, and sometimes you just have to check them out several times before actually finding the same schools again, even with conditions alike!
Is it legal to spearfish in the river at tweed heads or not...... Might even join ya someday..
There are areas that are closed to spear fishing but also areas where you can.
More videos!!!!! Plz
The mulloway shot......Double penetration. Well done
Was completely unintentional.
we get those fish here in South Africa
Daga salmon or kob right?
@@DanielMann Yeah that's right, from kwazula Natal all the way to Angola. They fun to catch and spear
What brand is that boat
Fibretek c-ski 440.
Thank you for that super awesome Video. I wanna ask, how do you kill those fishes? Like with a knive in the head? Would be interesting to know
Generally if you don’t kill it outright with the shot a swift knife to the brain will finish them. Not just anywhere in the head though, you have to know where the brain is.
Thanks for the advise! I´ve also seen some spearfishers who sharpened a screwdriver and went through the eye´s in the brain.
Through the eyes into the brain isn’t that effective on lots of fish, especially if they are big. Draw an equilateral triangle from the eyes backwards towards the tail of the fish on top and that’s probably the best spot to find the brain.
Do jewies become solitary when they get big or have you seen a school of 15kg+ fish?
Not that I have noticed. You can get one or two big fish by themselves but certainly seen big shoals with fish up to 30kg in them. I think they school throughout their size range.
Daniel Mann thanks you very much for the reply, I very much enjoy your videos, both entertaining and informative
mangrove jack follow mulloway???
I’ve often seen them in the same area and seen them schooling together.
You had a polo sub at 18? Mate!
Got my first suit in 2012 👌
Where about in Tweed?
👍
Nice vid! Have you been to Windarra?
Once, shot a kingfish I think.
is it not illegal to dive the tweed river ????
Certain parts are closed to the spearfishing but a lot of it is fair game.
Man I hate living in Germany/ Bavaria. I love spearfishing but I usually only have 2-4 weeks every summer (for the last 12 years lol) in Turkey. But sadly only at rather shitty locations. Never even saw anything even remotely close to being over 2 maybe 3kg
Where is this?
East coast of Australia.
Daniel Mann looks so nice man! UK is Trash😩
Not trash, just different.
Daniel Mann yeah true true, Been Florida, US and Tenerife and their sick for spearfishing. UK’s waters are just green and horrible not blue compared to us, Australia etc vis is terrible most the time
2:37 pass the grouper???
Lots of those fish around with mulloway but I prefer to eat the mulloway.
👍 muito bom
I’m just wondering is he Aussie or is he from england
Australian living in England.
while you were shasing that magro i was saying in my mind shoot .......you could've catshed 3 or 4 at once mate ..............by the way where are you hunting ......
No need to take 3 or 4 and bag limits in Australia prohibit that.
What made you move to England please answer
A change in lifestyle, travel, work opportunities & why the heck not.
Daniel Mann but tbh you couldn’t have moved to a much worse spearfishing spot
Kegan Blay 😂
I got all my spearfishing gear n my still dreaming 😂
something looks undersized
Are u a full time spear fisherman
Far from it!
Daniel Mann dang can people do it tho
"Shameteurs" or simply people who sell recreational catch illegally exist throughout Europe and the world. I am not one of them nor would I ever want to be. In saying that, they are exceptional divers because they are in the water every day making a living from it.
how he can breath
Everything on my channel is freediving/breath hold diving. No air tanks.
