This new era of villanous roles for Hugh Grant is really fun
Absolutely
He was great as kind of a bad guy in a comedy documentary Death to 2020 and its sequel Death to 2021. Of course depending on how your year went, you may want to avoid it.
He has always been a villain
Yeah he's not acting
All through the 90s onward I had nothing but contempt for Grant. After Paddington 2 I've somehow become a fan...
A24 sure loves models of houses and such lol
And so do I lol
Yup especially in Hereditary
Scary Wes Anderson
Brining it back to the shining days with the maze diorama
The most they do is finance one or another film, because they are mostly a distributor; they do not participate in the artistic creation of any work.
0:09 that’s the most A24 looking staircase

Just the shot of the candle saying "blueberry pie" and the atmospheric music already makes this a must see! A24 never dissapoints!

🚨 Normie Detected 🚨
They disappointed badly with Civil War
Hugh Grant is the master of... The pause.
the wince-pause
And the posh British stutter….
why'd you take so long to ... ohh... right.
And the "oh dear" mouth grimace
Do you mean the Men-O-Pause?
The cut to a blueberry pie candle and the realization that there is actually no pie. Love it.
The cake is a lie.
I did not get this. Why did she know there is no pie just because there is a Candle with a Pie name on it?
@@leifhesse They most likely believed him at first because it smells like a pie is cooking. But there isn't a pie, its a pie scented candle.
@@leifhesse The implication is that they believed him about the pie because they could smell it, but then they realized the scent was artificial. That one lie then calls everything else into question as well. Also possible she got weird vibes, or there were other tells, but we haven't seen the whole movie yet homie.
@@leifhesse Because he claims that his wife is home and that there's a blueberry pie in the oven, which they can smell, so they believe him. She realises the candle is the real source of the smell of blueberry pie: therefore, no real pie smell = no pie = quite possibly no wife. It proves he's tricked them. He's lied to get them inside his home and that means they are no longer safe. Absolutely chilling.
Love this move for Hugh, he's always had a great dark side but doesn't always get to show it off
I've never been so happy for an actor to outlive their romcom years. Hugh Grant is a powerhouse and he finally gets to show off his range 👏
apparently he almost didn't outlive his romcom years. Hugh was notoriously difficult to work with and studios stopped calling him for a while. He must have chilled out these past few years.
Makes you wonder what happened to all the women his characters have married in those romcoms.
@@modernorpheusYou think they’re in pieces buried in his backyard, don’t you.
@@DiBBs277stop throwing shade, we love Hugh 😆
I never realized that Hugh Grant would make a great psycho killer
He was pretty psycho in Dungeons and Dragons, too :p although he was way goofier in that one.
You haven't watched Cloud Atlas, then
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Well he's a brit.....we make the best bad guys
Who wouldn't, if being asked “would you like to talk about jesus”.
I'm all for this Maze Runner reboot. It's got a maze, it's got runners, it's got it all.
putting runners in the maze was such a good call tbh
Maze Runner done right. Still disappointed those movies wasted such a committed performance from Dylan O'Brien. They could've been so much better.
Where's speedy boy Dylan though, huh?
@ComedyBros5 Naaaah, the movies were dope
@@themoviecritic1092 The 3rd one was an absolute mess.
@1:46 "It may even make you want to die" followed by that little grimace that he makes ... so masterful!
I thought the same thing-really brilliant little moment.
As a former Mormon who served a mission, it's interesting to see realistic portrayals of Mormon missionaries being used as more than the butt of a joke. I can see how the strict set of morals and being homesick could add a lot to the plot of a thriller.
Exmo rm here as well, and I totally agree! Add the isolation from living in a new place (oftentimes speaking a new language) with a companion who is a perfect stranger to you, and you’ve got a lot to add to the atmosphere of a thriller. Not to mention the ideas of faith and belief that if handled well, could make for some fun story elements. I’m really looking forward to this one.
We don't know for sure that their faith is Mormonism. This could be one of many religions. I like that🙂
Jehovah's Witnesses do door to door missions as well, along with many other protestant branches.
@@zarrahprodan2180 They literally mention The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and are wearing Mormon missionary badges, so yeah, we do know that in this case.
@@zarrahprodan2180 nope definitely mormons, its the exact name tags, and they verbatim stated church of jesus christ.

I love that Sophie Thatcher is constantly involved in the horror and science fiction genres. I loved the films: The Boogeyman and Prospect
I think they are the genres that suit her career well.
Ironically iirc she said she doesn't want to be typecast at some point, but she's now in how many horror movies? With this and MaXXXine coming out too? Lol. Like, I think she meant she didn't want to be typecast as like, Natalie Scatorccio type characters, but all her characters seem to have some stuff in common with that one, like tough upbringings and rebellious natures and usually grief and trauma conga lines and a dead parent or two... I haven't seen everything she's in but what i have seen seems to follow this trend so I don't know if she's leaning into it and actively choosing these darker roles that share these similarities and if she changed her mind or if she doesn't see the pattern forming here but it's kinda funny to me. Either way, this seems fun and like an enjoyable watch.
Yes! And she has the more deep and complex character in Yellowjackets. She’s gonna be the new queen there. She’s awesome.
The last 5-10 years of Hugh Grants career have been arguably his best. The money surely isn't the same as it was for him back when, but the performances he's been turning in lately have all been amongst his best career work
I agree. Cloud Atlas really solidified his career.
Dungeons and Dragons was amazing. He was such a good villain. I loved betting against him!
The man paid his dues, made his fortune, now he can experiment a bit more with his acting roles. Good on him. I am starting to appreciate him more and more in recent years.
How do you know what his money is?
He doesn’t need to care about money, he can do whatever he wants to do.
I think they deliberately chose the same song that was used for the Saw X trailer (The air that I breathe by The Hollies), given that this film also features someone using traps/escape rooms. Can't wait for the film, A24 almost always delivers
I want to kiss whoever thought 'we should start using Hugh Grant in more edgy roles'. He's a joy to watch outside of romantic comedies.
Love the proselytizing twist: No, you show ME how deep your convictions run (coming up to my door)!
-- and hell yes to The Hollies soundtrack.
I love that twist as well
Eh. I feel like its just going to be used as a way to show that religious people are actually fake deep down. That always seems to be the conclusion.
I've said this YEARS ago!
Hugh Grant playing a killer would blow everybody's minds! Glad I'm not the only one who saw the potential.
hugh grant looks like hes actually having fun making films again,
I will say this. Having done studies on LDS media depictions, i think this is the first time I’ve seen sister missionaries shown in a movie or show not created by church owned or adjacent media. So that’s a first!
Curious to see the film too

Thank you A24 and Neon for filling the horror sized hole in my heart like Blumhouse never could.
And IFC Midnight
And my axe.
I guess Blumhouse is a little more commercial than A24, Neon, IFC Midnight, and Fox Searchlight, but I find their films usually have interesting premises. Hey, that's just my opinion though.
Blumhouse is...one of a kind
Blumhouse, as horrible as it is, at least puts out some entertaining stuff... unlike pretentious A24 crap.
whenever i see somewhere A24, i say "man i respect you so much, i will see you on the biggest screen, 4k possible"
For me it's either 1)OMFG I CANT WAIT
Or
2)OMFG THIS IS NOT FOR ME
I've never seen a 9/10 A24 movie in my life.
Typically worse than a Transformers movie.
@RED-WEAPON definitely not about them...just a my preference (not big into horror)
They always turn out out good shit
Nah. I'll wait until it streams on my big screen.
@DonoVideoProductions the last movie I saw in theaters was were the Millers
Not giving away the entire plot or relying on a barrage of jump scares, simply introducing the setting and building the atmosphere. Yeah, that was a well-made trailer.
I love that church! They are the nicest people I’ve ever met!

It's cool that they cast Sophie Thatcher, a real former Mormon for this role
"former mormon"... so she has upgraded from stupid to moderately intelligent.
Ex cult member 😮
As a practicing member, it’s still cool when depictions of LDS are done somewhat accurately. There’s so many examples of people just making up stuff assuming it’s true by the logic of “eh, Mormons are weird.” Even if the depiction is critical, I’d rather they try to actually use the real details in a way that makes sense.

As a former missionary for the church, I had some very actual weird stuff like this happen to me.
Fr? Wdym weird stuff like this?

As long as missionaries are careful, many strange situations can’t be avoided. I didn’t experience anything too crazy, but it can happen.
Drunk guys following us with guns. Kids throwing rocks at us. Sitting in a kitchen with a drunk man (believing that his sober brother was home) where the only light was a single candle on the table, and then he set a knife on the table (there was no food). We left pretty quickly after that.
@@nicholasharris5480 I was an elder, a boy missionary. At one point someone tried to trap and sa me and my companion saying “the devil is real, and I will show you he is real”. We had so literally escape.
Very glad Hugh Grant is getting something like this after a lot of campy villian roles (this years Unfrosted being a particular low point) He’s terrific in stuff like that but it’l be cool to see him flex his drama muscles as a real threat
the campy villain in the dungeons and dragons movie was great tho, a real highlight for me

As a former Mormon and a former missionary I xan confirm that experiences like that happen every now and then. Missionaries get killed, raped, robbed, and pretty often hurt by their own companions and leaders.
In other words, they are in the real world like everyone else
@@mongetebetando3221except not really? Mormon missionaries are isolated from their family and friends, living in completely new places, sometimes without having fully learned the language, and paired with a complete stranger who’s job it is to watch your actions every second of the day and report back to church leader if anything you do is interpreted as disobedience (and vice versa). They don’t get to control their own schedules, and in some places, they aren’t allowed to come home before a specific time. They’re also really young (18-20ish). So I would say they’re a lot more vulnerable than most people their age in “the real world”.
@@TheMTHouse I served, and this is a mischaracterization. Security measures are in place (one of them is even demonstrated in the trailer) but missionaries are susceptible to the evils of the world too. The way it's described, it sounds like something ordinary. It's not.
Mormons are not real followers of Christ of the Bible, they are a cult who follow mainly the book of Mormon.
WOW. Hugh Grant makes a great villain. This movie is a reminder that even if it feels safe, don't go into a stranger's house.
That last shot was insane!
I like how they accurately depicted the mission rule that a person of the same gender must be present in the home. I hope they are just as accurate with the rest of their depictions of missionaries.

As a Latter-day Saint (Mormon) I was encouraged to see how the creators of this film have clearly studied my faith closely enough to know about details like the rule with missionaries and another person of the same gender being present. Hopefully the rest of the film is that accurate as well. Far too often my Church is unfortunately portrayed in a negative and inaccurate light in movies and TV shows.
