  • Bad weather can turn an ordinary flight into a fight for survival. And the right information and equipment - both on the ground and in the air - can mean the difference between life and death. In December 2008 the United States was battered by a series of fierce storms.
    Which episodes of Mayday: Air Disaster do you remember that included bad weather that contributed to air disasters?
    From Season 2 Episode 2 "Cruel Skies": Cruel Skies brings viewers inside the U-S Aviation Weather Center in Kansas City Missouri throughout the worst of those storms to see how forecasts are made, how information is passed on to pilots, and how planes are diverted around the most dangerous weather. Cruel Skies also revisits four pivotal aviation disasters and near-misses that have taught the industry how to get planes in the air safely.
    Welcome to the OFFICIAL Mayday: Air Disaster RUclips Channel.
    Mayday: Air Disaster is a dramatic non-fiction series that investigates high-profile air disasters to uncover how and why they happened. Mayday: Air Disaster follows survivors, family members of crash victims and transportation safety investigators as they piece together the evidence of the causes of major accidents. So climb into the cockpit for an experience you won’t soon forget.

    The AA 1420 crash was partly the fault of American Airlines part as according to this the pilots were pushed to fly this (known as get-there-itis) and caused the crew to make many mistakes. The captain seemed totally unaware of things and it was the first officer walking him thru it and was still a disaster especially when the captain said that he didn't know where they were.
    In the 1980s I never heard of a microburst until these plane crashes due to one. Thank goodness for Doppler radar which is still with us now. Southern 242 happened just one week after the Tenerife disaster. It probably made some people think twice about flying.

    Open field like the one pilot said was the best choice. Landing on any highway or roadway your probably not going to be able to stop the aircraft before you impact something that is going to breach the wings and cause a explosion.

    Thinking of the Southern incident, it reminds me of one of the worst flights i encountered in 1980 in a B 727 over Africa - The weather radar equipment on aircraft prior to HD color resolution must have been quite tricky in order to maneuver or properly detect thunderstorms - I recall on my night flight over Africa that we hit some activity and the pilots even admitted over the PA that they got "surprised" by the weather and were to take action avoiding the cells which somehow didnt really work out and our plane got tossed around in the night - It was very scary and took about 30 minutes until we were out of the worst.

      Same with driving. Technically cars are more then capable of traveling safely in moderate rain downpours or in light snow showers as frequently done in areas where it snows very often, depending on the driver and tires and vehicle itself. but anything more heavy or risky. Like torrential rain [gully washer], hail, freezing rain, white out conditions, blinding fog. Things of that nature. Then your safest bet is don't drive if you don't have to, or pull off somewhere and wait it out. Sometimes calling in late for work due to weather, can save your life.

    Passengers always blow up when flights are cancelled. But they should keep in mind that airports and airlines want money, so the least they wanna do is cancel a flight. When they do it, their doing it for everyone's safety.

    Would someone with more aviation knowledge than me be able to tell me if flying lower helps when dealing with a bad storm? I know the accident is from 1977 and much has changed, but I also know storms are still dangerous for airplanes.

    • @bendriscoll302
      @bendriscoll302 Год назад +8

      In a mature thunderstorm it doesn't matter what altitude you fly at. That thing could be touching the tropopause (which is how they get their signature anvil shape) while also being only a few hundred feet above the ground. Inside a thunderstorm you'll find not only a ton of precipitation, but also vertical winds. A big cell with 3000 ft/min winds up or down in not unheard of. Just think of it as a giant column, you have to go around it. General rule of thumb is to stay at least 20 nautical miles away from the storm and to never fly under the anvil (hail loves to fall from the anvil).

    • @joshntn37111
      @joshntn37111 Год назад +8

      Flying lower during a thunderstorm is a bad thing. If you lose control of the aircraft during a storm, the lower you are, the less time you have before you hit ground.

      No choice. They had no engines. So all they had was their glide distance. And since they were at a low altitude, they likely didn't get much distance and thus time to find something better.

    The DC9 is nod made for this meteo condition. The pilots are not true pilots, they are a children in their mind. Why must fly in this meteo condition, it is very important, pushing, etc.? When the meteo is not agreable it means stop flying. The passagers can wait for a good meteo. Rushing means brokes the job. A lot of airplanes in USA in the sky, it is not acceptable, exageration, it is not normal, etc.
