      110% but as my teammates before me found out, dumping mags, is stupid.
      Somalia taught Delta and Rangers that thinking what you've got will just be replaced is a pipe dream when shit hits the fan.
      TIER 1 UNITS doing smash and grab missions are likely to roll in with 3 mags on chest, and one in rifle and drop and send it, but they have QRF locked in, and in many cases speed balls at the ready if things go bad right off the rip.
      Operation Gothic Serpent taught the fighting forces, to keep your mags on you, that's where the dup pouch got invented. In SHTF bass pro won't likely be open selling you pmags
      We rocked full taps and full set in packs as well as a bandoleer.

He was really tripped out that us law enforcement types just dropped empty mags on the deck and didn’t stow them like they had been trained. He had 2 legit tours in Iraq with varied grunt missions. He showed me how he used a SAW magazine pouch that fit 10 usgi mags flat side to side across inside. He would draw full mags from the right and empties stowed on the left. It’s an interesting concept and I guess battle proven, I tried it out a little and see the benefits. Old surplus saw pouches have stiffeners in them and are a good multipurpose pouch in general for a battle larp build.

  • @buff34x

    From a military logistics standpoint 30 round boxes of 5.56 is a lot more compact and stackable than preloaded mags, especially so now that we're fully switched over to gen3 pmags (in the USMC at least). Last I checked standard rifleman have 7 loaded mags on their person, IAR gunners have an additional 14-17 loaded mags in their pack for a total of 21-24. Team leaders and Squad leaders don't shoot as much so they can quickly hand off loaded mags as well. It's pretty rare for a rifleman to have a chance to shoot that many rounds without a chance to plus up mags while behind cover. We practice quickly loading rounds by hand so it doesn't take long to top off a mag or two during lull or while waiting at a phase line. I've had to strip rounds from damaged mags to load my good mags back when we were still using metal mags and it didn't take very long at all. Not ideal, but in a military context it's pretty realistic. In a TEOTWAWKI scenario if you have a team it could be feasible too but given you'd be operating from a fixed location if you want to survive pack space won't be as tight so it's a lot easier to just load a whole bunch of loaded mags. Infantry concerns would be a lot more similar to nomads than 99% of people that are prepared for a disaster/collapse and have a MAG.

    Points well taken, but I still think mag retention is important regardless of the low $$ cost. A good GI trick for speedy mag retention is to stuff the empty/partial mag into your field blouse via the neck hole. It doesn't require fine motor skills like trying to index the mag back into a pouch. It allows you to keep your hands in your "work area" instead of going down to your belt line to dump the mag in a dump punch or hip pocket.

    • @polkbritton
      @polkbritton 3 месяца назад +1

      Also: I'm not sure about reloading in the midst of making a tactical movement in a firefight. I see your/your team's logic for doing so, but I'm not sure how well it would play out in a "two-way firing range."
      I was taught to reload from cover, and when you have to move, focus on moving and make it quick (pick a route, "I'm up, he sees me, I'm down, etc.). If you're being engaged, I don't know if it's ideal to bog your movement down with admin tasks while you're in a vulnerable state, i.e. leaving cover and exposing yourself to enemy observation/fire however brief.
      Just my 2¢ for what it's worth haha. I understand where y'all are coming from though.

    After years of courses and training involved speed reloads, reloads with retention, etc., I've come down to this:
    -I practice one way to get the empty mag out, new mag in, ASAP. I don't bother about keeping empties, or retaining.
    -I will probably have 5 mags, 4 and one in the well. I'm prepared to lose all 5.
    -I have big stashes of mags at, and around, my place. I will go and get some more, if need be. I have no intention of roaming the wasteland engaging in firefights.
    -As I've said here before, I am not going to "fight like a soldier". I believe that's a losing proposition.

  • @buff34x
    @buff34x 3 месяца назад +42

    The always retain magazines during a reload SOP started in GWOT because magazines were being rigged with explosive traps by insurgents. Troops would speed reload (aka emergency reloads) and come back to pick up their mags 5-20 minutes later and they'd get their hands blown off, or even lose their lives depending on the size of the charge. Whereas there were little to no records of Marines being wounded or killed because of a reload being half a second too slow. Granted we practiced both speed and tac reloads as should everyone. We started to move to a middle ground of situation dictates and if you drop the mag, you or a buddy behind you will pick it up before leaving the area so there's no chance for it to be sabotaged.

      @@GWOTalchem @AlovelyBunchOfDragonballz I should probably have clarified better that I meant retaining the magazine during a reload even if it was on bolt lock back in the middle of an engagement. So effectively you would only do a tac reload even in times we'd typically train to do a speed reload. I edited my original comment to hopefully make that more clear. I'm not aware of any unit leaving mags behind and intentionally not coming back for them being an SOP in GWOT but that doesn't mean that some units might have done it for some reason. In Vietnam, and in WWII the US military tried the whole disposable magazine thing and it didn't work then either. I'm not sure if other nations have tried it too but I know it's never worked. The only chance I see that changing would be if something like the G11 somehow revived from the grave and their crumbly caseless ammo that required special training and tools to not break apart while loading into a magazine became mass issued. Realistically if caseless ammo ever took off I doubt it would be as fragile as that attempt so even then the disposable magazine doesn't have much of a future.

    • @GWOTalchem
      @GWOTalchem 3 месяца назад +3

      @@buff34x 8 years, 4 deployments, lots of rounds shot, zero speed reloads from bolt lock. Speed reloads themself are a fantasy and instagram high light post.
      When exactly are you doing this high speed close distance speed reload? Inside a room? You won’t have time to reload much less retain the mag lol.
      How it actually goes, is you just grab some cover, your squad covers your fires, you reload and retain the mag, you return to the gun fight.
      If your like walking down a hallway, and a bad guy jumps out, and your gun goes, click. Your either bailing out so your squad can shoot him, or your charging him to close the distance before he shoots you. No one is doing any speed reloads it’s a complete fantasy.

    • @buff34x
      @buff34x 3 месяца назад

      @GWOTalchem I'm pretty sure we're mostly in agreement. One of my key points was that there's almost no record of Marines being wounded or killed because of reloading slightly too slow. There were records of Marines losing hands to rigged mags that were left behind because for a time some units were focused on the fastest possible reloads no matter what because they figured they could always come back for the mags. Statistically, speed reloads would typically be done in a defensive position like a fighting hole or urban PB when being attacked, and when enemies would counter attack in the middle of clearing contested buildings. Not to say speed reloads happened often, but when they did happen, it was usually in those situations. Hence, the SOP to retain mags 100% of the time, and then shifting to 90-99% of the time with a buddy there to grab it for you in that 1-10% of the time. If you want to be a good rifleman, you should practice both to some degree. Just as most fire fights occur within 300 meters, you should train to shoot further.

    I like the Defense Mechanisms dump pouch. stows away nice and neat, has a quick deployment strap on the bottom of the pouch when stowed, and can be mounted underneath other pouches so it doesn’t take up molle space. It does have downside tho. Specifically, the bag itself is not very rigid & is made of the same material as a windbreaker. Although when rolled up it is protected by a thick nylon cover, but is retained by Velcro inside that nylon. Served me good in my larps with the boys.

    When it comes to dump pouches I've found I prefer the thicker walled and larger volume than the "more sleek and packable" options. I also run it on my non dominant side of either a belt or a PC at 8-9 O'clock. If I'm running a larger pack I'm much more likely to run a war belt than a duty belt so it has some play in it, which makes it easier to use the waist strap on the bag. The issued USMC dump pouch also had a draw string inside a thick rigid wide top so you could have it open, or tightened a little as you prefer which was a nice touch. I am yet to have that pouch both while active, and now while civilian shooter snag on anything. I really think the smaller compact dump pouches are at best super niche, and worst a little gimmicky. I also could see them being more likely to spill mags out when mounted as a dangler, but work better as an admin pouch there than most admin pouch danglers.

    These are my favorite types of videos, just explaining ideas and opinions that you have tested to the best of your abilities.
    Something I would like to see that no one has made on RUclips yet is “best piggyback dots”. Any comparisons I find are always on pistols. Whenever I want to get something for my rifle/kit I tend to spend at minimum a month making sure I know everything about the product I can before buying. My current fixation has been finding a top dot for my lpvo. I was 90% sold on a 509tx2 and then I found out about the sig Romeo x enclosed. It’s like $100 more but I can direct mount it to a dpp plate instead of needing an adapter for the 509t. With the rmr hd and the enclosed one now being acro priced I have no interest in buying them for $700+.
    Would be cool to get your input on this, while I don’t care for enclosed on my pistol I do want my rifle top dot enclosed. I’m way more likely to get that all shitted up than my pistol.
    Sorry lotta words

    Through a lot of BB warz, my method has been drop it on the floor to get back in the fight ASAP, then grab it off the ground and dump pouch/reindex it when I get a chance, rather than retaining immediately. Obviously if I have to change cover right away I have to come back later, but being suppressed means time to grab my mag so that's pretty rare.

    I've found several good dump pouches that have a big elastic butthole over the opening and that is my preferred option if possible. It means you gotta do a little more work in the moment, it's less dumping and more shoving, and you still have to do the dance sometimes to settle them in. However you can be confident that whatever goes in stays in, unless maybe if you're doing cartwheels or you've been strung up by your ankles b-movie villain style, in which case all your gear belongs to them now anyway and it's a moot point.

    What I've seen from Ukraine is 3+1 mags being very popular for raiding trenches and the like. From what I have heard, they usually also have more mags elsewhere but 3+1 is expected to enough for quick access.
    Now, how much of that is logistics of a military + drones + fire support + reinforcements + everything else that comes with being in a military? I'm not sure. It may be that these attacks are intended to be the first dudes in, so they clear out what they can and make room for everyone else who has a heavier kit to finish sweeping the area. Since they are only expected to get a foothold, they aren't going to be fighting for fire superiority with suppressive fire, they are going to be shooting individual people who are responding to gunshots or who are unfortunate enough to not realize they are the ingress point. These are just guesses though.

    Tarkov is a rather interesting test bed for sustainment and weapon/gear management, especially at the concerned/prepared/dirty civilian level.
    But as far as gear goes, the lessons I learned just by using my gear in airsoft was:
    1) 3 mags on a rig is a joke for anything but a simple 1v1 encounter.
    2) Dump pouches are great, and finding a good one is difficult.
    3) Packing "loose" ammo into mags is a pain in the dick. Just bring extra mags.
    The best two dump pouches I've used are the TRex, and ODGG pouch. Ran the TRex for years, but often found shortcomings with it. Picked up the ODGG one recently, and I think it's the best one on the market currently.

    Depends on situation... if you're in a defensive posture sure, throw your mags down on the ground. If you're in an aggressive posture, are you planning on going back to find your mags? I've done plenty of night field exercises, in training, trying to retrace my steps to find mags, and yeah, I'd lose one. Typically in an actual fight you won't be going back to retrace your steps. You sure in the hell won't if you're breaking contact. Nobody knows what the future holds but you should be training like you've got limited resources and nobody is coming to save you.

  • @Rb889
    @Rb889 3 месяца назад +1

    Outside of CQB and room clearing, I don't see much point in the whole emergency reload fetish, if you're reloading while getting shot at from that close, you're probably boned regardless of your 1.2 second reloads. I ascribe to the idea that if you're in a gunfight and are reloading out of cover, you have really fucked up somewhere along the way. I kinda get the idea of reloading while moving under covering fire, it's not bad in concept, but it's probably more liable to induce fuck ups than taking the extra 3 seconds to reload while stationary, in cover. It also just makes for a potential worst case scenario of an empty gun while being shot at if you have to hit the ground for whatever reason while doing this.
    I've never needed more than ~5 seconds to reload while retaining the mag, but it does require some kit considerations. I don't use dump pouches for that, they're just too obnoxious, so I reindex mags in pouches up front with kydex inserts, or back into basic double/triple mag pouches on the belt line. That said, it's not difficult to add emergency reloads to the training regiment, I just don't see much point to them, especially those done while standing upright like a fucking target. The most realistic method is to hit the ground as quickly as possible to reduce your chances of getting lit the fuck up, then proceeding to contort seventeen different ways trying to put the thing in the thing that will make the other thing shooting at you stop being a thing.
    As for the value of mags, eh, I'd rather not lose potentially valuable equipment if the situation may dictate that what I'm carrying is all I've got. But it's also just part of my own preferred technique, I reload the same way the M4A1 is reloaded in the more recent COD games, it just works for me. I've had some rifles that didn't always reliably drop pmags freely, so I wound up just universally using a technique that involved manually retrieving the spent mag, even if I was just ripping it out and tossing it to get back on target.
    Finally... Stop buying $3 meth piss in a can, shit's awful for you. I switched to gamer supps, the names are goofy as shit, but it's pretty good stuff, like surprisingly good, no jitters or crash. A $40 jar of it lasts me more than a month, and I triple scoop that shit every morning. They send out shitloads of free samples, too.
