- In this episode we're looking at the seminal character design of Lightning from the Final Fantasy XIII series.
FF13 marked a turning point in the history of final fantasy and JRPG character design where a greater push towards detail, realism and action-based energy filtered through to the very concepts of the main characters. Here we'll break down the elements of Lightning's design and consider how Final Fantasy's first female hero broke the mould and represented, beyond just being a female, the advances in technology and approach to design Tetsuya Nomura and Square were heading towards.

I’ll just say what we’re all thinking: gorgeous character. No matter where you stand on the 13 trilogy, most people can admit that the graphics, character design and music were superb.
Pretty much my conclusion, heh!
I've probably overall listened to the music over hundreds of hours compared to the less than fifty that I dedicated to the games

Thank you for interesting video. I think Lightning is the best female character of final fantasy series. She is cool and beautiful.
I have always loved the designs of the characters throughout FF XIII but man Lighting was a home run for me. I never really considered her pallet to be of any "rose colour". However now that you mentioned it, its as if I had always realized that but never outright said it.
Yup Lightning is probably in my top 5, if not top 3 for character designs across Final Fantasy, thought she was ace.
@@AlleywayJack My favourite character in the whole of FF XIII is Sazh. Reminds me of my dad somewhat, wholesome and goofy but also one good, loyal dude. Similarities in somehow to Laguna perhaps. Design wise I think my favourite is oddly Lebreau the side character.

Another great video, of course. So the capes/jackets and the color yellow unify them. I never noticed the color yellow unifying them. You catch so many details I miss.
I think my favorite version of Lightning is her ‘warrior goddess’ look from XIII-2. The combination of white armor with that feather cloak definitely gives her a divine, grecian appearance, which aligns with her character at that point in the story. It’s ostentatious, yes, but I’m just very fond of that kind of armor, haha.
Grecian is the word I was looking for, nice one. I really liked it for the same reasons.
Lightning will be my favorite character for all time.
My favorite design was her LR garb. (Even if the etro armor smash my eyes)
She’s becoming the goddess of death so her design being darker and sober makes sense. She’s overpowered so her design needed a big change which opposites the two last games.
I think red, black, and white color palette reflect perfectly what she is.
Red is the color of purity in Japan, but can also be seen has a negative color in other countries. Moreover, black and white symbolize Yin and Yang ☯️,
Purity with a touch of darkness, and darkness with a touch of purity.
That’s why adding red is just one of the best choice they can made.
This last design, even if it’s not what we wanted visually, is the best produced in my opinion.

3:15 Just a reminder that Cloud's sword holster is accounted for to. There is concept art (can see in the old FF7 ultimania) where the straps around his armour converge into a Y shape and at the intersection of the straps, there is a metal circle which is described as magnetic in the artwork. (edit: Nvm I think I misheard what you said since it's true Cloud doesn't have his sword on his back at all times, until Remake at least.)
I LOVE the FFXIII trilogy, i don't care what the general consensus on it is. I'm just sorry I couldn't beat Lightning Returns.
I like the first two games, lightning returns is decent but I didn’t like the gameplay compared to the first two. I put it on easy mode to get through it lol
Her outfits in 1 and 2 were amazing, but the Equilibrium outfit in Lightning Returns was so ugly to me. The crimson sword and shield were ugly, and the long jacket with the pockets were also ugly.
I understand why they went that direction considering the tone and story of LR, but yes it's probably my least favourite of Lightning's default outfits too
I honestly don't like Tetsuya Nomura's work.

@@BlueGuise9 I like the anime leaning style of Nomura’s designs. It’s cool looking and more fun and interesting to look at than Yoshitaka Amano’s. But he does great work on the logos.
