A History of Final Fantasy (1987)

In this episode we take ourselves back to the halcyon days of 1987 where the dashing young moustacheless Hironobu Sakaguchi begged his employer Mr Miyamoto of Squaresoft to let him make an RPG. In the wake of Ultima (1981), Wizardry (1981) and most specifically in Japan, Dragon Quest (1986) the DND inspired genre was gaining serious traction among gamers and the Final Fantasy story which began in 1987, helmed by Sakaguchi, remains one of the most famous tales, and staples of the sub-genre JRPG to this day.
Here we'll look at the first entry of the Final Fantasy series, the complete Final Fantasy 1 story, it's setting, game design and features, that from the outset set it apart from other games by how it focused on the fellowship quest among other things.

Regarding FFI, I never even considered how the story was a product of its time with the kidnapped princess, but that makes perfect sense. I suppose you can’t fault them for writing similar to their peers, haha.

Ff series was rooted in d&d from the get go. Even nowadays you fight a mindflayer in ff7 rebirth.
