I was there that day......Rusty was booed like hell when he came back around and old DW became the NASCAR most popular driver after this. I think he won the award the next two years.
I remember this race like yesterday. I think I broke my remote by throwing it across the room. I was a huge DW fan. At least he got revenge and won the 600 a week later.
It's sad how far they've fallen since then. Dale died, the Chase came, the car of tomorrow, "playoffs", lucky dogs, wavearounds, hard tires....too many negative changes and too much idiocy in the front offices.
btw, thanks again Smiff. what a gem, particularly the jeff hammond "but if you come in my truck, you aint gonna like it" footage and the press confererence at the end. pure gold.
Hammond has and always was an overrated dick. Tim brewer set him up at juniors and he road his coat tails until he ran it into the ground. he never did squat without Darrell or superior equipment
Best $200k DW ever lost! He became a retired superstar/ retired broadcaster because the fans appreciated him after this and who knows, he may have never been successful in tv without this..
About an hour before the video finishes, you could tell Jeff Hammond was pissed. DW maybe was even more pissed too. $200K on the line only to be taken away by a young and cocky Rusty Wallace. And it was the reversal of the roles. Everybody hated Darrell and liked Rusty and then it changed to where everyone sided with DW and hated Rusty. That's Winston Cup racing for you.
I didn't like dw or rusty🤷♂️ always thought dw was a crybaby, still is, rusty was rusty lol... like them both now, as drivers... couldn't stand them...🤣
DW: I couldn't walk through the garage after doing that to someone. Ummm pretty sure DW wrecked his share. He was actually hated for it for many years. haha
@fuckcensorship69 I think you could say that. He was holding Rusty down coming off the turns which is how you defend the lead especially in those days so it's pretty much a block. Rusty just didn't lift and what happened happened. It's a 50/50 chance of wrecking himself in that case so it's not like he punted him going into a corner.
Rustys car was really getting through 3-4, he was closing down on him every lap there. I think Rusty legit tried to get under him, he touched him but it wasn't much of a hit, he literally barely touched him. I was at the 2010 all star race and watched Jimmie Johnson spin out in that same spot without even being touched, he just came off the corner underneath another car and spun out. It doesn't take much to turn a car around right there at Charlotte
Waltrip drove the same line every time and should have dropped down and blocked Wallace. He basicly gave Wallace his left rear up on a plate you can`t do that!
Man I was a Rusty fan but that was pretty lame, I mean wouldn't want to win like that, there is a difference between racing hard and having some contact, and just flat out wrecking someone, Rusty still was my favorite driver until he retired.
Rusty has no room to shit talk Earnhardt after this. It's racing, I don't want to watch the pattycake don't touch me try little racing like today. But Rusty needs to sthu

Les was 100% right. You can see DW came down slightly. Rusty ran the same line he’d run, for @ least 4 laps. Regardless, it wasn’t intentional, by either driver. It only proved what a whiner & sore loser DW is (almost as has as D Hamlin)

Yup DW was most popular driver in 89 and 90.
No. Only 89 & 90.
