💖 Which character do you plan on romancing?
Martin. Also, thank you for saying that the game is good. I was worried because IGN gave it a 6 out of 10 and saying the game was ok.
All the male characters except Cecil tbh xD I'll have to replay the game multiple times to do that, but I'm not complaining xD
Wolf girl
Did you know you can be a christian and still play these jrpgs? It's awesome and I love them for some of the stories! Although the same sex interests are sketch and shouldn't be praised lol. Love your videos bro!
@@sillyseriouspro Why not?
The longer days is such a plus for me! In RF4 I had to pick and choose what I wanted to do for the day. Sometimes having to dedicate an entire day to doing a story dungeon and save the next day to work on raising crafting skills and focus on requests. Trying to do too many things at once just constantly had me running the clock, and going to bed very late.
So it's such a breath of fresh air that I can work on my farm, gift and greet everyone, do some requests, go fishing, and still have plenty of time to go through a dungeon to work on weapon skills and get some level ups. I use up my entire day lol.
It's probably better that the days are longer than shorter! It is a lot easier to get everything done that you want to. I end up filling my my bags full of fish twice a day. t makes SO much money.
@@TheGamingShelf Yes! I never got to do much fishing in RF4 and eventually the skill fell to the wayside because there wasn't enough time and I had other ways to make money but hoo boy am I loving just having all the time in the world to fish and making some early game money to boot!
You are SO right. Longer days are lige changing in RF. We can do so any things... It was really frustrating back then. Now, i can enjoy everyday peacefully! :)
I'd like an RPG to start with the protagonist having all the knowledge of the universe and the game is just them struggling with their infinite wisdom because nothing excites them anymore
Kind of an opposite play on amnesia? That would be interesting!
Minecraft.
Hmm other than a visual novel i dont think this setting can be applied anywhere else because mc will be overpowered. And that contradicts a game in which you start at lvl 1/beginner which makes the amnesiac mc the best setting so you can introduce tutorials and a reason why you are weak.
@@B2.Benedajenzo Maybe the stumbling block for the protagonist wouldn't be their level or power, but the tools available to them to do what they need.
"you can't eat a certain type of bread" this bread thing is the weirdest jrpg mechanic I've ever heard of lol
Haha right!? And that’s REALLY saying something 😂

Went back to RF4 after playing this game for at least 5 hours. Haven't felt that spark yet like I did when I first played 4. "RF4 didn't have an interesting story."? Stopped the video right there. I finished the 3 arcs and that game became one of my favorites story wise. What I also like about it is that I get different dialogue everyday from characters but in RF5, I'm still getting the same line for over a week in game. I will eventually play this again when I feel like it. The character designs are pretty at least.
“How dare this guy have a different opinion than me?!”
@@NotCharAznable How dare he state his opinion?!
My limited edition is waiting for me at home! I cant wait till tomorrow! You also seem to be the only reviewer that has compared RF5 to previous RFs, other reviewers compare it to AAA which is unfair to RF5. thanks for a great review!
Hope you enjoy it!
how are you liking it?
@@411sponge72 I really enjoying 😉
I'm extremely excited for this! Been in the mood for a new Rune Factory.
You’ll really dig this then. It surprised me by how good it was.
It's a great game but I really wish they hadn't found a way to brutally murder the framerate after like every load screen.
Yeh for me it runs ok until lucas appears, and Ludmilla moving in makes it only worse. Also, if you know the rf toons (npc) since 3 or so... there are not that much new / appealing...
It was nice to watch a positive review. I've seen so many talk about there being bad lag and slippery controls as well as framerate issues. I'm very excited to play this game though
I was VERY surprised to wake up this morning to so many negative reviews! I really didn’t have performance issues.
@@TheGamingShelf I think it's more that you didn't notice the performance issues. I can see them in your own footage for this review. It's pretty bad. Luckily the game overall still seems really good, so I'm going to take the plunge. I need a break from Elden Ring (which also has performance issues...) to play something more light hearted.
Switchup has a positive review too
I wish they'd introduce the ability to customize our protagonist at all already appearance wise.
Also like you (And frankly MANY people.) said, the ability to romance the characters that look older, like what the fuck Devs?
Agreed! Would be nice. The only reason I can think of is that they’d have to make different character portraits.
Some people WANT to romance the older looking characters, Shadow
Like damn, do you want everyone to have baby face like Priscilla and Cecil?
@@vanveleca 'Tilts head in confusion.'
@@ShadowWolfRising reading comprehension error most likely
Eh, Rune Factory is known to have anime cutscenes so I'm not mad about not being able to customize my character appearance if that is still consistent with the brand
It's personally not my favorite in the series, however I am extremely happy/satisfied with it.
I do wish we could marry characters that actually look like adults lmao. There are only 2 characters I'm even interested in marriage wise because of this issue and they're both guys. I WISH Misa was a possibility, even with Hina being her kid I would have picked her. She is stunning.
Thats the anime way... everyone is either 15, 30 or 80.
Same! Misasagi is HOT
@@XSentinel 30 is good?
i wish elsje was marryable.
>buys a kid's game
>complain about not being able to marry adults as a kid
This was so fun to play together! It truly is the best in the series. Yeah the graphics are not groundbreaking but this should not be the reason for someone to skip this experience!
I loved it too! We’ll have to play more 😁
i wouldn't say the graphics are the issue so much as it looks rougher then 1 and 2 which released ages ago. Its like they decided to stick to the handheld formula from 4 instead of going back to a full console release. The grid based farming looks dreadful.
Its the pop ins and shitty performance for me.
I'm glad to see a positive review. I love the series, and am hoping to buy this game someday, but there are lots of negative reviews, so that's kind of a letdown.
Anyways, as long as it's good, I can add it to my wishlist.
It is good, great even. The performance on the Switch isn't the best. But that'd due to the console not the game
@Yari Vickiraytive Pantoja, great point~!
@@neoandroid8586 No I believe it was the game I believe it was rushed not the switch itself no I'm not going to be one of those people that say "but botw looks better than this" just look up tides of destiny and frontier and keep in mind that is the Wii look and ran better yes 5 have modern features but most doesn't flow well in 3d I can't even throw my item in the item bin it's hard for attack to actually hit magic is slow just farming lags the game also biggest gripe the town is big and empty very empty when it could've been smaller which might have help switch with rendering not that it would help with the optimization I should have actually looked up a review but I didn't want to spoil it for myself and rune factory been so consistently good so I ended up buying the earthmate edition I feel like I paid $80 for a $30 dollar game I've played all six rf this was the first disappointment I hope they get a bigger budget for rf6 and the team behind rf3/4 and make it cross platform what was this your favorite my was rf3 followed by rf4 then rff then tod rf2 then 5 lastly 1
@@neoandroid8586 Not really an excuse since it's Switch exclusive. They should have play-tested and polished this a lot more to fit the console limitations. It's a shame because everything else looks great.
@@darkknight32920 it's not an excuse but it is a reason. Even Nintendos own first party game have bad performances sometime. E.g. Arceus
You could just press L and all of your items will be there and then press Y and it'll be in your hand. Much faster than opening up the menu and going into inventory.
Based on this and the comments i feel the fan base has lowered there expectations after 2 handheld versions. I dont have a ds so i wasn't able to play them, but this looks like a handheld port or a mobile game rather then a proper console rune factory game. The combat and the farming in particular seem watered down like the 4 port. I started playing these games because harvest moon hasn't been good since n64 days but this just seems to be going in the same direction.
RF5 is the unexpected revival of my second favorite franchise ever, Im going to savour it for MONTHS.
Well I still have elden ring to finish but that can wait LMAO
There's a lot to do so I hope you enjoy it!
What's your first favourite
here after steph's review but i also enjoyed your take taylor! i will say it again even though its been said ad nauseum at this point, but thank god that trigger system wont get in my way as much.
Thanks for watching both videos! And yes thank God the trigger system is gone.
Young amnesiac protagonist joins a group called Seed and slaying monsters... Sounds familiar. Where can I find a gun-blade lol
Now I feel obligated to name the protag Squall
Haha didn’t even think of that 😂
dis guy must be skip 3 and 4
this guy is a lying piece of trash. probably getting paid to lie lol
And Frontier
I also enjoyed tod a lot more than I thought I’d agree with you guys on 3 and frontier
What am I missing exactly? My experience with this game so far has been pretty negative compared to the previous games
You're not missing anything. This game is basically a 3D version or RF4 with different characters and very similar story. Also with very bad performance, unresponsive controls and very slow pace of pretty much everything from farming to combat.
It's a step down from RF4 for sure. A lot of positive reviews I've seen completely ignore or severely downplay a lot of those problems, claiming they are not a big deal. As a person who really likes playing games on the Switch due to portability and is willing to suffer through downgraded visuals and framerate to gain this perk, in this case are too severe to tolerate. I will still play the game because I really like the gameplay loop, but it will be relegated to a filler game I'll play 2-3 hours a week in between different things, I won't play it for hours each day like I did RF4.
@@RiskOfBaer I'm so glad I'm not alone in this thanks dude
Yeah I’ve been really confused, I’m someone who’s played every single rune factory game and I’ve been really excited about this one but the fact that it’s been so unbelievably glitchy and laggy is just- killing me. I preordered it so long ago only to be disappointed. I really just don’t understand if it’s just me having lag issues or if everyone’s switch nearly crashes each time they step out of a house
@@neriedvonfireemblem
Are you referring to the literally half a second long stutter when you leave your house? I'm not seeing any of these game breaking issues that people are complaining about, the most lag I get is a slight stutter when leaving my house, but after like a second it's done and the game runs fine
Thanks again for the quality reviews! I remember playing the very first Rune Factory as a kid. I think I reset 5 times trying to perfectly optimize my time and never ended up finishing it. This might be a good one to try to redeem myself.
Oh you won’t need to do that here especially since the days are so long.
@@TheGamingShelf Let's be honest, I never needed to do it 😂
I have it and having huge difficulty getting into it
Same here… I play on switch in handheld mode and it’s horrid. A shame because I love the bachelors.
On rune factory 4's light story, It's really just in the first third that's kind of lacking. The second and third big arcs are quite good, 1 is personal for an important character in 4 and the other is arguably the most important story moment in Rune factory since it's the ''end'' of the background war plot in the series.
Too bad the third act is not, as logically expected, FIXED in the game, but rather you have to get lucky for it to spawn. I never got to Act 3 because of that, it never begun :/, such a dumb failure from the devs
the framerate is what definitely held this game back, other than that, was pleased with the release
This game is Simple ... yet charming it is like living in actual anime world
I really don't know .. because I played the old ones it has sense of life and meaning ...
I'm quite a Rune Factory fan, but I hope they will patch the framerate or at least release a PC version later. I don't understand why this game run not that well on the Switch. Graphic, texture, shadow, lightning, are not that heavy. :)
You got your wish! it's on steam now!
@@terminatortv8109 yes ahah. 😁
It’s funny you mention Olive Town cause I feel like they put way more effort into this game than they did Olive Town.. I enjoy Olive Town but seeing people play RF it just seems like it was the better priority for XSEED! I’ve never played RF but I’ve always loved their SoS/Harvest Moon games so I might get RF5 one day
Agreed! Performance and story seemed way worse in Pioneers of Olive Town.
@@TheGamingShelf yeah! I have hope XSEED will learn from Olive Town and make a better game instead of putting something out to compete with Harvest Moon
@@courtneytatefigueroa1172 ... you do know Marvelous XSEED created harvest moon right?
the current "harvest moon" series are knock offs, Natsume just got rights to the title name, but none of the people that made the real Harvest moon games. The Story of Seasons game ares the real harvest moon, im pretty sure they made their point quite clear when they released "Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town"
@@Zlyde007 yes I know XSEED are the original harvest moon developers.. since they made the originals and the really great 3DS SoS games, a lot of people had more hope for XSEED continuing their awesome streak of great games but Olive Town is very lackluster compared to their predecessors
plan to get it down ther road, i honestly cant keep up with the new games coming out
I hear you, neither can I 😆 My free time has been completely consumed by playing games and then making reviews for them these last few months.
I've played previous Rune Factory games before and they were quite fun & impressive considering the videogame platform they were on. Tbh this one sadly doesn't look that appealing to me anymore, maybe I had too much expectation & I gradually lost interest. I'm still curious about the sales though, especially in the West, as the franchise seems to be a bit niche over there.
I got it on launch day and honest to god it's a blast. The open world is super fun to explore
You probably are one of those people with crazy high expectations. It's a great game and you should give it a shot sometime. It's 100% worth it.
@@Jexxa. I'm generally not though 😅 although I must admit that I had a higher expectation for this particular franchise considering how I've enjoyed RFs, the transition from 3DS to Switch, the game being a completely new entry & not a port. Also not trying to undermine everyone who genuinely finds this game wonderful, if people like it then more power to them. I might still wanna try it some time in the future, but nowadays with my current life, I have very little time spared for videogames. With so many others coming out at a similar time, Rune Factory 5, at the time of me commenting here, would not be a priority.
@@bondyaliano Here's my two cents as someone who bought it with basically no expectations, given that I already knew about the framerate and performance issues since I previewed the JP release. Overall I still think the game manages to catch some of that Rune Factory charm. While I personally think the main story is MAJORLY lacking, especially compared to RF4's really great campaign, the characters are still likeable and interesting enough to keep me coming back to that same old Rune Factory gameplay loop. A little add-on to that point, this game does get a couple extra brownie points from me since it allows you to actually romance ALL of the male and female bachelors, and as a queer person it's super nice. Even with that though, for the beginning hours of the game, I often found myself just going, "This really just makes me want to open RF4 special again."
The only reason I didn't do just that was through perserverence and the fact that I've played that game to death.
tl:dr If you're hankering for a fresh (not new or groundbreaking) version of the addictive Rune Factory gameplay loop, then yeah it fills that need. Honestly though, if you want to be 100% invested in the world and story, then it's definitely a valid skip in my opinion.
@@jennakochanski yeah I agree playing this game made me want to play rune factory 4 se wish we got a port of tides of destiny or frontiers instead of this as those games look and ran better as well as having a better story did you see the dungeon design of 5 just awful like the framerate it's only worth getting if you're a die-hard rune factory fan or know nothing about rune factory get it on sale it doesn't feel worth the 60 dollars sadly I paid 80 for the earthmate edition tho
Love this series and I’m so excited!
Nice! It’s a great game and I hope you have fun with it 😄
Character design wise I could never get into these as much as Fire Emblem or Persona but will be picking it up regardless!
I like the difference in reception from “professional” reviewers on websites, and reviewers in RUclips. “Professionals” would have you believe the game is a broken unplayable mess. While others recognize that while it isn’t the shining beacon of technical fidelity, it’s still perfectly playable and a good time.
That's basically my thought! I had such a great time with it that I apparently ignored any technical issues. Also, I think after my experience with Monark's awful performance on PS4 this runs like a dream lol.
@@tacopolicecar And you’re overreacting. The game is perfectly playable. It’s filled with as much content as 4, but you’re going to refund it because it stutters every now and then? GTA has game breaking bugs and frame rate that makes the game more difficult to play. RF 5 has frame rate that looks bad and that it. The game isn’t broken for it. When it stutters, it only looks bad. It doesn’t actually affect the gameplay. You don’t go slower or anything. But because of that, you’re really deciding that RF 5 is not worth playing? So stable frame rate is now the most important part of a game to you?
@@bababobo5067 It speaks for the game that someone with such questionable priorities doesn't like it.
This is good news for me as I’ve just started rune factory 4 special for the first time and am absolutely loving it, so looking forward to having quite a lot of great content to enjoy haha
If you come from 4 you’ll like 5 even more 👍
the last rune factory game i played i hated but that’s because i was too young for jrpgs at that time. now that i’m older i could probably see myself appreciating this franchise
You should give the series a try now! You might like it.
The L pouch fixes that one complaint you had.
Thank you so much for this honest review! I can't wait to have it released here in Europe! (I think it's on the 25th, anyone can confirm?) I'm not overly concerned over the graphic aspects of the game, I mean... asking the Switch to have the same specs as a PS5 is a bit unrealistic. As long as it doesn't lag too badly, I'm content with that.
Honestly, one of the things that kind of irked me in past Rune Factory games is that the days actually felt a bit too short. There were days that I wanted to keep exploring a dungeon and I couldn't because it was already night and my character was gonna collapse from exhaustion. I think other players had those concerns back when RF5 was still in development, and it seems Hakama Studios actually delivered in that aspect. That said, if there was a way to shorten the days, it'd be great too xD
The cool thing is you can just go to bed early if you want! So you can kind of customize your day in a way.
Awesome review as always! We are looking forward to playing this and are on our way to pick up the game now.
Awesome! I hope you guys have a blast with it 😄
I really enjoyed RF4S, and I preordered this so i'm looking forward to its release. It's hard to pick my first romance, I've been thinking between Fuka and Scarlet, but eventually I'm gonna marry everyone at least once so I suppose it doesn't matter in the end lol. The textures of the environment are a bit underwhelming but I'm sure I can look pass it and see the majority of the positives.
I hope you have as much fun with the game as I did!
Really excited for this, but wish that they'd stop trolling us with more mature characters we can't marry.
Right!? 😭
They did us dirty, Bachelors got 2! 2, MF! While bachelorettes all like a kid and less character to it. N we got pet heroine
Please ...take... your....time....!!!!

There is a good way to assign items to a quick hot key! In that item menu there’s a tab under rune abilities called “customize L pocket” where you can decide which items and categories you want to show up in your quick select L button menu. The game never really tells you that as far as I know, but there ya go!
I like this game decently enough, however I wouldn't say its the best in the series (my personal favorites being 3 for the characters and 4 for the story). I felt like I couldn't really connect to the characters in this installment even though I was really excited to play it. I do like how the game is in 3d like tod even though it's clunky. I just feel like this game was rushed and could have been way more polished than what we got.
My issue with games like Stardew Valley is the awful combat. RF has always had MUCH better combat.
Ah yeah it’s way better here! Lots of variety.
This will be my first rune factory game so I'm looking forward to it
Farming RPGs have never really caught my eye - but I do like games like Animal Crossing - but this one is with the combat aspects making me consider checking it out.
Not sure if it can beat 4 honestly, even the environment style is worse than the Wii game…
4 was a great game! I just hated the trigger system. I always felt like I didn’t know what I was supposed to do next.
I really hope they fixed the romancing issues from the 4th entry. In that version you could only advance relationships after a certain point if you go on dates and those dates were only on 'event' days which randomly chose characters from the village. Leveling was pretty crazy too. If you wanted to level up sleep, you had to go to bed before 1:00am. Made a nice handicap. This series has so much potential.
It’s much better here for sure!
My initial thoughts were not great... The controls feel really off, and the video stuttering is rough considering how low quality the textures in the world are. The voice acting is really rough as well, normally that doesn't bother me, but for some reason the one word voice acting on every line (yeah! Wow! Aww.. Etc) really started to grate on me.
I stopped playing after about 30 minutes because of these issues so it might get better, and it's gotten good reviews so maybe I'm just being too critical, but yeah... Instantly killed the massive hype I had with how much I enjoyed rune factory 4.
Thanks for the review. I'm surprised this is still only on Switch but I've got it.
Still trying to figure out whether I should start this series with this entry or RF4 as you can get that for less than half of the price of this one.
I've been interested in the series for awhile but just never tried it.
Visually speaking, RF4 Special is a huge step back since it’s a 3DS game but it’s still fun. If you can get over that it might be safer to start there especially since it’s cheaper.
@@TheGamingShelf I think I can handle that, so I will go with that one. I can always get the new one if I find myself liking the concept enough.
Thank you so much for the advice!
I think rf4s is a little better. Personal opinion
@@sayura93 RF4 is definitely a better game, don't listen to that guy. And also, it's not a huge step back visually, on a technical level it might be lower on the scale but visually it still looks better than RF5 does. Since it's a top down 2D game it's much easier to tolerate low fidelity visuals. RF4 looks pleasing to the eye, meanwhile RF5 is just... ugly.
i fully recommend starting with rf4s!
ik this vid is about how rf5 is the best in the series, but personally i felt it was sort of mediocre for a rf game and reused a lot of elememts of rf4, and technically it's kind of rough; it also (in my opinion) screws up some mechanics that were done much better in rf4. i still really recommend rf5 (it's super fun and has the staple rune factory charm), but i don't think it's a very good starting point in the series.
though also, if you have an interest in the older games rf3 is also a pretty good starting point! it's less polished than rf4 and graphically is a bit aged, but it's really fun, and starting with one of the older games makes it a bit easier to play the older/less polished ones (and it's also pretty neat to see how the mechanics improved in rf4 after playing rf3). i may be a bit biased though, 3 was my entry to the series
At least the days aren't too short, you can always go to bed when you want, but being forced to rush everything takes the joy out of it.
I had the same thought as you, but about Terry. Why is he not an option??
ill wait for the pc release.. i cant handle bad frame rate
I can recommend RF4 Special if you haven't already played it...? IMO the pacing, dialogue, textures and controls are just as bad as the framerate here in RF5 >___> I picked up 4 myself and had a ton of fun with it for a little over a week, while RF5 only lasted no more than 7 hours. Better dialogue, more fun characters, more stuff to do (tasks included), shorter days, looks prettier and more precise controls!
nice video! I recently became addicted to Rune Factory 4, so was wondering what 5 was like. Watering looks a tad clunky though
It’s sort of a lock on system, but it gets way easier once you upgrade your watering can.
@@TheGamingShelf looking forward to trying out. now just have to finish RF4 first..
After watching gameplay from various different content creators, it seems the performance in this game varies from person to person. I notice that the game actually runs decently for some people (outside of the loading screens), whereas it's horrible for others. Unfortunately, my Switch has a really hard time running this. I love the game itself, but the frame drops give me so much eye strain after a while, just can't get myself to play this anymore. I'm hoping for a fix, but I highly doubt it'll happen at this point.
I’m sorry that you’re having so many issues :/ Definitely give it a try when it comes to other platforms!
Having a hacked Switch, I simply overclocked it (more like I am now running the CPU closer to _stock_ performance, since the Switch is actually _underclocked_ because of hardware restrictions) and _that_ made a huge difference, finally running at a much more stable and decent framerate! I can't understand how they haven't managed to optimize the game even after a whole years since the release in Japan >_>
Didn't help with everything else that I felt was bad with RF5 though (pacing, dialogue, textures, controls), so after 6-7 hours I switched to RF4 Special instead and had a ton of fun with it for a little over a week ^^
@@ConraDargo I actually went and switched over to RF4 the past few days too. Had much more fun with it despite having already played it lol
8:30 never has a man ever talked so much crap.
This game is arguably, MAYBE the 3rd best in the series, doesn't come even close to competing with RF4. And how the hell did you even come up with the idea that this game improved on RF4's combat, are you out of your mind?? RF4 has the 1st 4 game's worth of boss fights combined, New Game+, Hard and Hell mode that actually matters, an extremely well balanced LV1 mode, an "arcade" mode via NG+, and most importantly it ingeniously layered bullet hell mechanics on top of the ARPG in order to avoid the pitfalls of pattern memorization repetition from the likes of Monster Hunter or Dark Souls, etc...
Tides of Destiny (or Oceans) actually made use of the 3D space with jumps, more vertical level design and again, most importantly, a very satisfying aerial combo system.
Meanwhile what does RF5 do with the 3D space? Adds a lot of unnecessary padding via extra walking, makes enemy encounters even more laughable since you can just run away, unlike Oceans it does not utilize the 3D space in any relevant way, and 99% of the things that work here are copy pasted from RF4 (except when they are straight up downgrades). Even if you think the new taming mechanics is a direct improvement (debatable), it is made irrelevant due to this game's lower difficulty removing any stake from the execution.
Don't get me wrong, I love the series and RF5 is a good game but reviews like this pisses me off not only because it's objectively wrong, but because it perpetuates the myth that RF is merely Harvest Moon + hack and slash combat when in reality people like me take more enjoyment out of RF4's combat than Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Elden Ring due to how well designed it is specially on Hard/Hell or LV1 playthroughs. My point is, you're not doing the series any favors y'know?
it runs so smooth on pc, 60fps+ no stuttering
Honestly, I don’t think I’ll really be in to it for the reasons you seem to like it. I’d hoped for more depth mechanically rather than more over arching story dragging me out of the gameplay constantly.
I understand and agree that it’s important to have romances as fleshed out as possible, but msq pop ups constantly are just going to annoy me lol
Fair enough!
I'm sold this is the next game I'm picking up, never played Rune Factory
You’ll love it! I hope you have fun.
You should try 4 Special first, it’s way cheaper
I agree not being able to romance to older women like Misasagi, was very disappointing.
Simply put, Rune Factory 5 runs terribly on Switch. The controls are slippery and imprecise, an issue exacerbated further when playing docked, where significant input lag causes actions to take longer than you’d expect. That often made me overshoot the plot of ground I was trying to water, the spot I wanted to place a piece of furniture, or the monster I was trying to whack with my sword. That technical jankiness is especially frustrating during combat, with input lag making it challenging to dodge enemy attacks, and the slippery controls making movement awkward and chaotic. Because Rune Factory 5 gives you so much freedom and so many options to grind against enemies and get better weapons, I was fortunately never stuck in a situation where bad controls made a fight impossible - even on hard mode. But they did make what could have been one of the main draws of Rune Factory significantly less fun. (Rune Factory 5 is also alarmingly sensitive to stick drift, something I experienced surprisingly frequently even when using the generally more resilient Pro Controller.)
These issues are not limited to movement either, as Rune Factory 5 has aesthetic problems too. While not the first 3D Rune Factory game, the jump from top-down to third-person was a rocky one here, leaving Rune Factory 5 lacking in much of the charm and detail that the worlds of its 2D predecessors were praised for, including Rune Factory 4 Special on Switch. The character design remains stellar, especially their dialogue portraits and the animated introductions for bachelors and bachelorettes - but the world itself is full of flat textures and long stretches of bland, empty space. The town of Rigbarth and its surrounding countryside feel big and empty for no reason, with objects suddenly popping in regularly and frequent framerate issues whenever there are a few too many things on screen at once. And sure, when I play a sim like Rune Factory I can still enjoy it without stellar technical prowess or cutting edge graphics. But with a ten year gap between games, I was hoping Rune Factory 5 would try to be something a little more impressive than “Rune Factory 4, but clunkier.” this was ign review..
Pretty sure you can get around the equipment problem by hitting L, then Y on whatever item you want to equip. Except for Armor and stuff.
True! I wish I could equip an item though instead of just having to open a quick menu. Still feels clunky.
4>frontier>3>5
The frame rate is very off putting. I’ll wait for a patch or an Xbox/PS version.
Oh you know those are coming too.
Say less Taylor, picking this up asap loved RF4S and this is obviously a no brainer for me
Awesome 😁
Cut voice acting is probably due to budget costs, more voiced dialogue there is the more expensive itl cost em, and seeing as they came out of bankruptcy a while back Id say they had to do a few cuts.
There is definitely a lot of repeat dialogue! You play a whole in game year of RF4, and don't see any. But being still in the first season of the game, I've already seen quite a bit of repeat dialogue, which has been pretty disappointing. Though I'm enjoying the game still overall.
To me Rune Factory 2 is still by far the best entry, in large part because it included rival marriages. I know some people don't really give a shit about those, but to me these games are about becoming connected to the villages as a whole, not just the girl you decide to waifu. Watching the characters marry and have kids of their own makes you feel like you're part of something bigger, instead of just making it all revolve around you. Personally I just don't feel very interested in these games as they are now.
This is a really good point, I wish they’d continued to include that part of the story in future games because it really did make the community feel more real.
Uhm i think the last time they let the players marry some unusual npcs was in Story of seasons Friends of Mineral town, but they did those characters worser than the normal bachelors, the challenge to marry them is bigger but they don't have heart scenes/dates or anything that go deeper on their narrative (it was non-existente)... so maybe it was for the best that the game decided to not include extra/secret bachelors (if they can't make them properly at all...)?
Anyway i do agree with you, i would marry Terry in a heartbeat if he was one of the bachelors lol
Yeah you’re right. The harvest goddess isn’t as interesting as the others.
@@TheGamingShelf Nor her or the other three either :\ they didn't get any of them right
I'll check it out if it comes to pc
If you're playing on switch it's not that great of an experience especially if it's your first game in the series. The performance just sucked all of the fun out of it.
why is the time in these types of games so unnecessarily fast???
Interesting that you think it’s fast! I thought it was slow. I always went to be so early since I did all my chores and what not quickly.
What all do you do in a day in the game that makes it feel fast?
Cause part of the point of those games is time management.
This review is the polar opposite of IGN, and I'm really glad I got to see it!
I was really shocked to see the negative reviews! Yeah it could run better but the gameplay was so good to me that it didn't even matter.
it's also a bunch of nonsense. This game is a real mess. I just guess this guy was paid to shill it.
@@8-bitsteve500 Stumbled across this comment again and have to say, you're right. This game was inexcusably crappy, coming from a background of games like Harvest Moon for GBA, and Stardew. Sold it once I got into lategame because I realized it never improves.
WOAH thanks man! I was too caught up in elden ring and completely forgot about this!
Right? Early 2022 has been jam packed 😆
It’s a really great game, but the only issue I have is targeting for items and monsters. And spell targeting etc. My only criticism to a very enthralling game
loving the game, but ive seen alot of people say 4S is better because it has all these small little interactions with characters, objects and the world, which to them this game seems to be lacking, granted this is my second RF game in years, so i dont have much reference, but this game atleast makes me wanna check out the rest for sure. im just sad i cant romance the characters i wanna romance lmao (Simone and Misasagi)
Haha it seems like most people want to romance the older women! Me included. And honestly I can't blame them.
I couldn't agree more. Love the video!
Thanks Gabriel!
too bad framerate is trash and barley playable
I've never played a Rune games, do RF5 gameplays can be compared to Fantasy Life in terms of combat, crafting and gathering ? It's a game that I really enjoyed on the 3DS !
I would say yes, but even more in depth! Fantasy Life is great but felt s little shallow. Here there’s so much more depth AND breadth in the content.
I’m wanting to buy this, are the performance issues and fps as bad as the other reviewers are making it out to be?? I really want this gsme to be good. It caught my eye. (Would be my first rune factory ever btw)
Yes, insanely bad. Up to one-second input delays and an average of 12fps on an OLED switch docked and handheld digital version. I've been playing and loving rune factory since the first title, but the performance is so bad, it's completely ruined the experience for me other than the characters.
Definitely holding out for a Steam release to pick it up
Give it 6-12 months and they’ll have one I’m sure
@@TheGamingShelf no doubts about it, they already have Rune Factory 4 Special on there so I think it is just a matter of time before this one comes too
And you were correct! It's one steam now got it a few days ago.
If you take away the bad performance on switch, then yeah it very well just might be the best. Or one of the best. But the fps and performance etc, is just awful...
Nevertheless, I plan on romancing Beatrice. I went with Margaret in RF4 originally. But Beatrice is 😍😍👌👌
My only problem with it so far is the framerate.
the reviews said the game has major issues on the switch
Maybe I got lucky or I can just look past them because of how much fun the game is. Not sure which, but I guess that into account when making your purchase. Watch my footage carefully and see if it would be a problem for you.
RF5 is good but NOT as good as you said
RF4 is better
Na rune factory 4 is the best
yo! im late but, tis was the only RF series i ever played and i enjoyed it
I would say that it IS deniable. This has to be my least favorite in the series and was hugely disappointing to play. The frame rate and loading screen time was sooooo bad on Switch. The characters felt very cliche and many of the designs were leaning into fan service territory which is very much not appreciated. I also disliked the town design; the other entries in the series had way better town layout. Also, placing furniture was so annoying because you couldn't put anything close to the wall so it just looked like there was a huge gap behind it. Overall, it felt super unfinished and I ended up selling my copy.
Great video! I can’t decide whether I want to play this or Ghostwire Tokyo.
Thanks for giving it a watch! Both are very different games so I guess it depends on what you’re looking to play right now and how much dollar to hour value matters to you. Rune Factory 5 will probably have more content.
@@TheGamingShelf historically speaking I’m generally more into stuff like Rune Factory. I’m going to play a bit of it tonight.
Just curious-- and not meant to be an attack-- but do you recall beating all of the "three arcs" of RF4? There's several fake-out endings, and the majority of the juicy stuff is near the end. Just wondering if you're comparing the story with the base "I reached the credits" ending of RF4, or with the (admittedly overly-complex-to-unlock) real story.
I did a few arcs, but it takes SO long to get there that I just got bored and stopped playing at some point.
I was excited for this game.. sadly its choppy as fuck. Even during cutscenes the frame rate is at like 10-15. Graphics and animations Looks pretty good but the framerate is horrible… the most annoying thing is the voice acting.. it will start one phrase then no voice acting for 2 or 3 phrases then voice acting again for a phrase… this game is literally half completed
What's make it special is it really worth it ?? I wonder if I buy it or not !
I feel like the social aspect is vastly improved. Each character has more depth.
@@TheGamingShelf very well then 👌 that's what I want ! A beautiful concept and story thank you 😊
4:13 bruh, its just the L shoulder button.
I had a love hate relationship with recipe bread in rf4
Do NPC'S say your name if you leave it as the default Alice/Ares?
Good question! I honestly didn’t check
DO NOT BUY TILL PATCHED !
rune factory 4 had an amazing stooorryy wym?
Is the frame rate better?
I can deal with it but apparently I'm in the minority.
