Hi Julie & Martin, Brings back memories of my car servicing days before the newer cars with all the sensors and electronics. If you have a vacuum cleaner that blows as well as sucks, you can gently blow through a paper element air filter from the inside to make it last a little longer if required. Another filter you haven't mentioned is the engine cooling water filter, which I had clog up with silt when on a cabin cruiser hire boat on the Norfolk Broads once. I don't know if your engine has a sealed cooling system like cars. Get well soon. Barry
Hi Barry, thank you for the vacuum cleaner tip! 👍 When we had our little GRP cruiser, that used to be raw water cooled like you are describing, so know what you mean. However, our narrowboat engine is a sealed cooling system with skin tanks and using coolant, Martin just checks the water levels regularly. Thanks Barry! xx
Great video - i remember it from before. Such beautiful autumn scenery. I can’t believe how shiny and clean your engine looks - a thing of beauty too! Hope you’re both doing well and Martin had a good Father’s Day xx
one thing my old dad told me when i was young was if your air filters dirty its doing its job. and the dirtier it is the better it filters. so putting it off a tad bit doesn't hurt . I must Applaud you on the condition of your engine. pristine looking. I really like the oil pump and gearbox pump setup. brilliant. Best kept boat on the cut!
Hi Steve, such lovely compliments! Martin really does look after the boat and he always says, the engine is the heart of the bow5, so it takes priority and needs to be looked after. You’re right about the filters, it’s their job to catch the muck, so like you say, the dirtier the better! Thank you so much! xx
Good job done martin i have done all the servicing on my trucks from Cummins 270 HP to Detroit 435 HP then Caterpillar C15 500 hp since i bought the first one in 1978 until i retired in 2021 just the same only bigger. Indeed the Cat would sink your boat for sure, You did well the strange tool you used on the filter we call that a strap wrench here in USA, when i left England in 72 i had not even heard of one. I watch you two all the time Stay safe and get better soon. Ed 40 S of Vegas
Hi Ed, wow that Cat sounds like a biggun! Thank you for the name of the tool, we couldn’t think of its name lol. It’s so lovely that you are enjoying our little videos all the way from the US, thank you so much! xx
Hello from Germany, you have a very clean enginebay - I like it. Maybe it would be an idea to show the dipstik of the gearbox for newbees. How much oil does your gearbox need to be changed? Our old gearbox on our Beta-engine wants 0,5 l to be changed and I need to take it out with an extra vacuum-pump. That is not as easy as you can do it with your pump. Do you have a fuel filter for the Ebersbächer dieselheater? If not, you better should install one. If you have one, do not forget to clean it too. See you on the cut🙂 Bini and Friday from Germany with Friendship Penkenna
Hi Bini & Friday, was it you guys we met and spoke to at Crick, both on the cut before, and then inside the show too? You taught us how to say Eberspacher lol, it was as lovely to meet you! We do have a dipstick for the gear box, we will show that next time, our gearbox uses the same oil as the engine, which is why the same pump does both and our gearbox takes 1.4 litres. We don’t know if our Eberspacher has a fuel filter, as it is a sealed unit 🤷♀️ Hopefully see you out on the cut soon! Thank you! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Hello from Germany again, yes, we met at crick. We enjoy it too. The fuelfilter for the Ebersbächer should be in the fuelline between the tank and the Pump. If you do not have one (like us too yet), the burner in the dieselheater wont last as long as it could be. This can be an expensive repair: You can see it at youtube "Narrowboat Electrician" "Rebuilding a Webasto EVO - But Why?" He explains it well. We will be on the cut again in about 6 Weeks. Bini and Friday from Germany
Hi guys, Great work Martin good tip on putting oil on the filter rubber seal. When ever I get sick and can manage to do something I always feel that at least I achieved something for the day and it makes me feel a bit better. I love engines too and in particular old engines that you can really work on, not these strange things that look like they are out the star ship Enterprise lol. I have a little MGA roadster and recently I replaced the old 4 speed gearbox with a new 5 speed one out of a Mazda MX5 so I not only can drive on the motorways and keep up with modern traffic but I have full synchro through all 5 gears. I told my wife could she park her car outside for three weeks while I did the job. 4 Months latter it was finished. As you can imagine she wasn't very happy with me but she still loves me.🤣🤣I think?🤔 Great episode guys I love seeing the day to day chores you have to do to keep Rhapsody in blue in ship shape. Stay safe guys.👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Geoff, yes Martin is the same as you, he loves tinkering on this engine, he used to get frustrated when we had the cars, when everything turned electrical! Martin always used to service and fix our old cars, but when these new ones came along, they had to be plugged into laptops to see what the sensors say, he was so pleased when he saw the boat’s engine as he can work on it! I feel your wife’s pain lol, Martin would tell me he had a ‘5 minute’ job, and I just knew it would be a LOT longer than 5 minutes lol 😝 Thank you so much Geoff! xx
Glad you're getting over the illnesses you've both had. I've been fighting allergies and asthma from high pollen counts. Also, we've been having cold weather for June in Washington State. I had to turn on the furnace for awhile to take the chill off!
Hi Joyce, yes we’re much better now thank you. Aww hope you’re ok, the weather has been awful hasn’t it, but hopefully warmer times ahead eh! Stay well and thank you! xx
Hay Julie and Martin, what an unexpected pleasure. It was my Birthday yesterday and I was out so I am a day late. I watched your service while eating some raspberries from the canal side shop in Great Haywood. Eagerly awaiting Thursday evening’s video and Martin I hope you are feeling much better now, no fun being under the weather. Lots of love to you both
Hi Edward, glad you enjoyed it! Happy Birthday for yesterday, hope you did something nice to celebrate! It’s lovely at Great Haywood, we really enjoyed it when we were there, thanks Edward! xx
Sorry to find you unwell. Hope the lurgy clears up soon. Nice demonstration of engine maintenance Martin....And lovely drone footage, as usual, early in the video Julie. Thank you both guys. Have a good week.
Aww thank you Neil, all better now. As I explained in the description, this was filmed six months ago, but has somehow mysteriously disappeared from RUclips, and RUclips have no trace of this video, so I was advised to upload it again, as most of you hadn’t seen it and we felt it quite important to show the engine service. Thank you so much Neil, so pleased you enjoyed it! Thank you! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Thanks for that Julie. I hadn't read the description....I did wonder about the Autumn leaves!! I will pay more attention in the future! Ha ha.
That is so cool that you can pump out the oil and gear oil. I learned two things,"lurgy" and pump out oil. 😂. I was curious about your old flag. I couldn't find it anywhere, and I can't find the old vlog to look at it again. I remember the dragon, but I thought it had flowers as well.
Hi Carrie, the flag you are thinking of is our England St George’s Flag. It has the St George Red Cross, plus St George on his horse, and the English red rose too. You can see it in some of our earlier videos. Well remembered! Thanks Carrie! xx
Thank you. I love your vlogs. I've laughed at the Tom and Jerry cans more than once. I was raised in Las Vegas ,I have a treasue you would love Julie . When I find it , it's yours. I'll keep you posted.
Great vlog lovely cruise despite scare. Was it just the bottom of the canal or an obstacle ? Love the banter. Brilliant. And the music was awesome too. Really loved it. Thank u 🙏
Hi Trevor, we’re not sure what it was, think it was an obstacle rather than the bottom of the canal, when yo7 hit the bottom, it sounds like going over gravel and this was a proper clonk! Thanks Trevor! xx
Hi guys been watching your vlogs for a while now and very informative this vlog was good because it shows you can save money by doing things like this yourself it was expained well so easy to follow well done you two keep up the good vlogs
Happy Father's Day Rat Bag.... I mean Martin. Sorry, it's just that I hear it so often it gets confusing...😂. Just kidding of course but, I do hope you had a great day.
Martin used to work on cars before all the computerised wizardry that cars have now lol, so he enjoys working on our Beta Marine engine! Thank you Derek! xx
Hi Julie and Martin, yet another brilliant vlogs, very informative. Can I ask you a couple of questions? How long does your diesel last, how often do you have a pump out on your toilet? and we hope you both are feeling better 😊
Hi Chris, thank you, glad you enjoyed it! No probs, we use approx 1 litre of diesel per hour, we have a 300 litre tank, so lasts a long time. For the toilet, we pump-out every 3-4 weeks, so approx 15 times a year. Hope that helps! Thanks Chris! xx
Hi Helen, Martin only gives the boat a proper wash and polish twice a year, the rest of the time, he just rinses with water and dries off with a good leather. For the shampoo he just uses a boat shampoo, nothing special, then he uses the G3 products you can get in places like Halfords. He uses scratch remover, colour restorer and then the polish, all G3. Hope that helps! Thanks Helen xx
Much appreciated for the info, our house is on the market now, not having much luck at the moment but hopefully soon we'll get a buyer and start our new life 🤞🤞🤞🤞
Thanks for that! Is there another thing to check - a greasy hole that needs to be kept greasy - by the weed hatch? The grease was semi - solid, so not oil. Sorry I'm not very clear, but I saw someone very briefly on another vlog go ' oh, and you need to check this, or the boat can fill with water!'? They were checking the weedhatch at that time.
Hi Debra, yes that is called the Stern Gland, that is usually checked every day and especially a cruising day, so that one is not part of the engine service, but definitely something that needs to be checked all the time. We might show that when we next show the daily engine checks, thank you for the suggestion. Thanks Debra! xx
Nice one you guys, very handy video and well documented - I Have a service looming (First for Me) and we have the same engine/setup, so this is a great guide for me. Detailed video very appreciated👌 Couldn't do Crick Show this year in the end, so missed seeing you guys, but sure we will bump into each other again, not literally I hope🤪
This video was from last year, I did say in the description, somehow it disappeared from RUclips and even RUclips had no trace of it, so advised me to re-upload it. But it seems that most people haven’t seen it before, so I’m glad I did. Thank you for giving it a view, we’re all better now too! Thanks Jacqui! xx
Well done Martin - both for showing how to do an engine oil change and also explaining what you are doing and why. Good filming Julie. Hopefully by now the lurgy has gone and Martin's heavy breathing is back to being reserved for those off-camera moments! 😊 Take care, stay safe and make the most of those dry moments!!
Aww thank you Jill, yes Martin’s all better now, so less of the heavy breathing 😉lol, Thank yo7 for your lovely comment, it’s so nice that the sun has finally come out! Thanks Jill! xx
Back on the farm we had an additional daily service task: replacing the oil in the air-pre-filter. Tractors churn up a lot of dust, so ours had a metal mesh filter that sat in an oil bath, before the normal air filter. Every day we had to undo the clips and take that little basin loose, rinse the mesh filter in petrol, let the filter dry, and put a quart of clean oil into the basin before putting everything back together. There was also a normal air filter that had to be checked seasonally, but the oil-bath filter reduced the amount of dust that could reach that one. Same thing you were doing, Martin, but just one more additional step. --Dan
Oh wow, thank you Dan! We also have something called stern gland on the boat that has to be checked every day to make sure it is tight, otherwise water can get into the engine bay and in extreme cases sink your boat! We will show that in another video soon. Thank you so much for your comment, we really appreciate it! xx
Great video tutorial on how to change your narrowboat oil. Will come in handy for the new boat owners. Have a wonderful week. Be safe in your travels! 🥰
Oh wow! We love the Norfolk Broads! We used to hire a small cruiser every year, our favourite boat was called Grenada Girl from Summercraft at Wroxham! 😃 How was it? Our favourite moorings were at Gay’s Staithe and also Womack Staithe! Hope you had a lovely time! Thank you! xx (sorry we don’t know your name) xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB I have had many boats out but this year I booked a houseboat at Wroxham for myself a friend and her dog, but sadly she couldn't go so I went solo and absolutely loved it x
Narrowboating for sure isn't for lightweights! It's a wonderful life but it does have a learning curve and a lot of hard work and I have no doubt it is worth it. ❤
It's wonderful to have a handy man. Mines takes care of our vehicles maintenance. And can work on the ins n outs needed on the camper- refrigerator complications.
Yes, Martin is definitely a handy man, he will always try and fix something himself before paying someone else to do it! There’s not many things he can’t do 👍 Thank you Terry! xx
Hi Julie, this was the video from last year. I did put that in the description, as for some reason, the original video had been deleted, no-one knows how, when, or by whom, but it’s disappeared! 😳RUclips advised me to re-upload it, so that we didn’t lose it. Our regular vlog will be out on Thursday! Thanks Julie! xx

Very informative guys. Very clear. We will be looking to do our first service soon and I want to learn how to do ours which is also a Beta Marine so really gave me a good insight. Take care ❤
Hi Margaret, thank you so much, we love putting the drone up, when the weather allows lol and as you say, the British countryside scenery is stunning! Thank you! xx
Hi Bill, the CRT don’t provide anything like that, we usually hang on to our old oil and pay for it to be disposed of at a boatyard or marina that has maintenance facilities. I believe we paid £5 last time. Thanks Bill xx

Good evening Julie and Martin. My husband and I have just sold our house and have started to physically look at NBs rather than seeing them just on RUclips. We found your vlogs very interesting as we too are a couple, we also are going to CC and we won’t have our car as that will be going when we get our boat. I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind: We are not expecting much post as most things are done through emails but what do you do for the necessary mail? Also, this is a bit delicate, how often, on average, do you need to pump out your loo? Thank you for your time. We did see you at the Crick Show. In fact you were just a foot away from me when we passed you but I became a bit shy and carried on walking 😊.
Hiya! Ooh exciting times ahead, bet you can’t wait! Oh I really wish you had said hi at Crick, it would have been lovely to meet you. As we sold our house and don’t have an address, we didn’t want to bother our kids by using their address, so we use Ship-to-Shore. It’s a service where you get a registered address, either a PO Box, or an actual address, and any mail is dealt with how you choose. You can either have the mail held until you find an address to send it on to you, or have it opened and be informed of what has been received, or you can opt to have it scanned and sent to you electronically. If you have something that you physically need sending to you, you find the nearest post office and have it sent to you Post Restante, most post offices offer this service and you just collect your parcel/letter from the local post office. Here’s the link to their website www.shiptoshore.co.uk/ The lady to speak to is Lindsay, she’s lovely! Our pump out loo has a waste holding tank that holds 347 litres and we pumpout every 3-4 weeks, so approx 15 times a year. Some tanks are bigger and some are smaller, so it will depend on the size, but you can probably use ours as a guide. We’ve never filled it up lol, we’re not quite sure what happens when it’s full and we don’t want to find out lol 😜 so always get it emptied around the 3 weeks mark, although we have lasted 4 weeks! Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on and if there’s anything we can help with just shout 👍xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Thank you so much for your reply. We had looked at other similar mail services but they seem a lot more expensive than the one you suggested, plus it’s nice to go with someone that’s been recommended. Will definitely be looking them up. Also, thank you for the information on the pump out. In our research people have complained that the pump out has often been broken or not working, yet we have never seen that on any of the vlogs we have watched. Have you had any problems? Thanks again for your reply.
Hiya Cindy, we haven’t come across a pumpout that’s out of order, we have only used one of the manual ones out on the cut mind. We usually go into marinas, as there ones are always working, we always phone ahead too just to check first. With Ship-to-Shore, Lindsay is really nice, very easy to talk to and doesn’t mind if you wanted to call her and ask questions, just tell her that we recommended you, she’s really lovely. Speak soon! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Will definitely checkout Lindsay as soon as we have our boat and will say she was recommended by yourselves. Thank you also for the advice of going into marinas for pump out. Thank you for being so kind in helping us. Cindy xx
Hi Brian, we use an omnidirectional WiFi aerial with dual SMA cables, which is mounted on the roof on a magnetic pole mount, then the cables ar3 fed down into the boat and into a TP Link router, we then use EE mobile broadband. Hope this helps! Thanks Brian! xx

Thanks Chris! xx
Glad you're both feeling better now, boat jobs there neverending 😊 Martin has done a good job. Can you tell me what you use to polish your boat? x
Much appreciated for the info, our house is on the market now, not having much luck at the moment but hopefully soon we'll get a buyer and start our new life 🤞🤞🤞🤞
Hi Chris, oh wow, exciting times ahead! Keep us posted and hopefully we’ll see you out on the cut soon! xx
Thanks Debra! xx
Thank you for giving me the correct name! I look forward to seeing how you check that. Thanks so much.
Hi Debra, you’re welcome 😃 xx
Well done 👏👏👏
Thank you Kev! xx
Nice one you guys, very handy video and well documented - I Have a service looming (First for Me) and we have the same engine/setup, so this is a great guide for me. Detailed video very appreciated👌
Couldn't do Crick Show this year in the end, so missed seeing you guys, but sure we will bump into each other again, not literally I hope🤪
Aww so glad you enjoyed this one, good luck with your engine service, hope this helps! Thank you! xx
Well done good explaining how you do a service
👍👍
Thank you Ronald xx
Aww bless you both you still sound tough. Hope you are both feeling better now ❤❤❤
This video was from last year, I did say in the description, somehow it disappeared from RUclips and even RUclips had no trace of it, so advised me to re-upload it. But it seems that most people haven’t seen it before, so I’m glad I did. Thank you for giving it a view, we’re all better now too! Thanks Jacqui! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB do you know I said to mark I must having dejavu as I swore I remembered it 😀❤️
@jacquelineryde7339 😂😂🤣 thank you for watching it! The new one is out this evening too xx 😉
Thank you so much for your comment, we really appreciate it! xx
Brilliant stuff, what a team. Get better real soon
We did alright didn’t we, thanks Adrian! xx
Thanks for putting it back . Lots of info cheers
Aww and thank you for watching too Paul! xx
Great video tutorial on how to change your narrowboat oil. Will come in handy for the new boat owners. Have a wonderful week. Be safe in your travels! 🥰
Thank you Ali, we really hope it helps people, thank you! xx
Ice job 👏👏
Thank you so much! xx
Oops, Well done😉
lol 😂 xx
Thanks for the informative video! Hope you guys pulled through that nasty ole lurgy ok.
Yes, we were ok, glad you enjoyed this one! xx
Xx
Thanks Edward! xx
Catching up with my favourite vlogs after my week away on the Norfolk broads x
Oh wow! We love the Norfolk Broads! We used to hire a small cruiser every year, our favourite boat was called Grenada Girl from Summercraft at Wroxham! 😃
How was it? Our favourite moorings were at Gay’s Staithe and also Womack Staithe! Hope you had a lovely time! Thank you! xx (sorry we don’t know your name) xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB I have had many boats out but this year I booked a houseboat at Wroxham for myself a friend and her dog, but sadly she couldn't go so I went solo and absolutely loved it x
I don’t blame you going on your own, it’s a fab place! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB btw I'm Nina x
Aww thank you, I will try and remember 😃 xx
For those across the pond 16:17 audible representation of lurgy
😂😂😂🤣 Haha, yes, definitely a British thing, when we’re poorly, it’s usually some kind of lurgy lol 😜 Thanks Sean! xx
Narrowboating for sure isn't for lightweights! It's a wonderful life but it does have a learning curve and a lot of hard work and I have no doubt it is worth it. ❤
Hi Dorothy, yes, there’s always jobs needing doing living this life on the water, but it’s well worth it! Thank you! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Same with houses, I guess---but the rewards are bigger!
❤️
It's wonderful to have a handy man. Mines takes care of our vehicles maintenance. And can work on the ins n outs needed on the camper- refrigerator complications.
Yes, Martin is definitely a handy man, he will always try and fix something himself before paying someone else to do it! There’s not many things he can’t do 👍 Thank you Terry! xx
I think he was sick last year too when he serviced the engine.🤧
Hi Julie, this was the video from last year. I did put that in the description, as for some reason, the original video had been deleted, no-one knows how, when, or by whom, but it’s disappeared! 😳RUclips advised me to re-upload it, so that we didn’t lose it. Our regular vlog will be out on Thursday! Thanks Julie! xx
Hi. Loved the vlog, scenery lovely. Shame that map blocked it!!
Haha 😝 don’t worry, we won’t be doing that again! Thank you for your feedback Lesley xx
Get better soon.
Thank you Bette, we’re all better now! xx
A Job WELL DONE & CLEAN 100 POINTS
Thank you very much John! xx
great views
Aww thank you! xx
I remember watching this first time round and didnt really appreciate how ill you were. Nevertheless you powered thro the vlog which was as usual light-hearted and informative. Take care both of you.
Aww thank you so much for watching again, so pleased you enjoyed it. Yes, Martin really wasn’t well, but really needed to get the service done and he did a good job too didn’t he 👍 Thank you so much! xx
Very informative guys. Very clear. We will be looking to do our first service soon and I want to learn how to do ours which is also a Beta Marine so really gave me a good insight. Take care ❤
Hi Kathy, so pleased you enjoyed it, hope it helps and good luck with your engine service too! Thank you! xx
Interesting that you can pump the gearbox and engine oil with the same pump. I am having to suck the gearbox oil out with a syringe
Yes, we are quite lucky that the engine and gearbox oil are the same, so means we can have the same pump, thanks Glenn! xx
Good morning to you. The scenery is beautiful and l like the drown shots from up above. Hope you and Martin are much better. Take care.
Hi Margaret, thank you so much, we love putting the drone up, when the weather allows lol and as you say, the British countryside scenery is stunning! Thank you! xx
What facilities are provided by CRT to dispose of your waste oil, or do you chat up the next boatyard you call at!!?
Hi Bill, the CRT don’t provide anything like that, we usually hang on to our old oil and pay for it to be disposed of at a boatyard or marina that has maintenance facilities. I believe we paid £5 last time. Thanks Bill xx
hello julie martin the weather is rubbish how ever its going to be much better in the coming week so in joy as it wont last long hey ho i got so wet friday it came down on me like a water fall i started at 7am 9am down it came i was so fed up bloody rain hope you have a geart week

Thank you Lee, really appreciate it! xx
Dr. Sam Bailey
Not sure how to answer that, don’t think we need her, thanks! xx
Good evening Julie and Martin. My husband and I have just sold our house and have started to physically look at NBs rather than seeing them just on RUclips. We found your vlogs very interesting as we too are a couple, we also are going to CC and we won’t have our car as that will be going when we get our boat.
I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind:
We are not expecting much post as most things are done through emails but what do you do for the necessary mail?
Cindy xx
You’re very welcome Cindy, anytime! xx
hope thats not your friend on the bike , been waiting rather a long time lol
Hahaha 🤣 it does look like he’s been there a while lol! Thanks Harris! xx
Martin, what router and external antenna are u using? Thanks
Hi Brian, we use an omnidirectional WiFi aerial with dual SMA cables, which is mounted on the roof on a magnetic pole mount, then the cables ar3 fed down into the boat and into a TP Link router, we then use EE mobile broadband. Hope this helps! Thanks Brian! xx

Martin your breathing labored and you don't sound good
No, Martin really wasn’t very well that day, but the service needed doing and it was the only time we had. He did a good job and was better in no time. Thank you Margaret! xx
