They need to focus on the branding and have a social media presence for people to notice and understand their impact to donate. People who do CAD makes more money than people who making animations mostly, they can donate if they knew FreeCAD had an identity like Blender. IMO the name is sort of a problem, if there's a FREE in the name, then why would anyone pay any money for it. Blender isn't called Free3D or FreePolygon or something, lol. I love FreeCAD and I hope it does to the CAD industry what Blender has done to the CGI industry, but the FC people need to make a lot of changes for that to happen.
Just like Blender, hopefully FreeCAD will have a massive impact in the CAD world. Making CAD accessible to everyone, creating more competition and innovation among CAD softwares. I really hope you guys will make a separate YT channel for FreeCAD because it doesn't cost any money and put more effort on the branding and social media presence like Blender to create an identity like Blender, because for FOSS, community is everything.
Thank you all FreeCAD team, this is a wonderful cad software, free and open source, incredible!!! I've been using it for years and its evolution is amazing!! Love it
I think I am in love, I tried Freecad two years ago out of curiosity, then I came back for it about 3 weeks ago as a learner, and now booom, new cool update right in the time, I can't ask for more.
Thank you to every contributor to this release. The best part of FreeCad is not only Free but it also supports 3 major platforms, Win, Mac, and Linux. Respects!
I find it funny that the toponaming problem was fixed years ago in the realthunder branch, but the code was undocumented spaghetti to the extent that it had to be rewritten from scratch.
open source will change the world, not a greevie President or Politician! Thanks 4 anyone participating in this AWESOME Project! Greetings from a Open Science Punk
I'm a complete outsider to the CAD world and at the same time very impressed by the existence of FreeCad. Last time I used a CAD software was in my teenage years, with AutoCAD, in the 90's.
Same here brother. This could mean the beginning of an era for both indie inventors and large companies to make products using open source CAD. This could mean lower development costs, and potentially less expensive products. :)
I'm using it last months, including RC versions. It's useable, but in RC2, I could not model array of additive helix to make a thread for a PET bottle. In RC4 it worked. Then I run to the issue that I can't create shell with -3mm offset, but if i start with -1mm and gradually increase it, it works. For me it's not always obvious what is skill issue and what is a bug. Otherwise it's good enough for me so far so thanks for good but a bit awkard product. Actually summer nighly builds are already better than a stable release.
Been using FreeCAD for a while now. These new developments definitely make it worth to master it. Congratulations to everybody who contributed! It's brilliant!
Awesome work everyone! 😍 So stoked for 1.0! This will be game-changing for adoption/usage! 🚀 The _psychological_ effect of *1.0* instead of 0.21 ("beta") is _huge_ for people switching from other _closed_ CAD programs! Thank you. 🙏
Thank you team for this update. I would like to suggest, like others said, do market this like the blender software. Connect with RUclipsrs, specially in 3d printing ones, who are fed up with the rug pull from Fusion 360. There is a massive audience waiting for this. I have introduced few of my colleagues, specially oldies who are almost reaching retirement and trying to get into 3d printing hobby, to give FreeCAD a go.
My experience of CAD software as an engineer is that all of them are painful to use. I've used Solidworks, NX, Creo, Inventor and can't say I actually "like" any of them. You're always having to experiment and modify your workflow to work around crashes, inefficient UI designs, bugs and other quirks. Haven't used FreeCAD much, the UI is still very confusing to navigate but it's fairly easy to start exporting STEP and STL files without frustrations. I like the dark scheme and Blender navigation style where it's easy to pan and spin parts. I just hope they eventually overhaul and simplify the toolbar interface so that users don't have to sift through 30 indistinguishable icons for the function they want to use. But even now I'd rather use FreeCAD than the cloud-based Autodesk Fusion 360.
I am not engineer (yet) and i want start explore and start learning about cad software, I heard Autodesk Fusion 360 is the industrial standard and every company requires you to be experienced in it, Should I start with FreeCAD or pay for Autodesk Fusion 360? (sorry for my bad english).
@@ahmedkj9923You could start with the free version of fusion360 for home/hobby use to learn. Or embrace the opensource and join the makers and tinkerers with freecad.
@@ahmedkj9923 iirc Fusion is free for personal use (but some more advanced options are disabled) I'd say it's easier to get into CAD with Fusion, but later on when you'll have your footing, learn FreeCAD, especially if you think of doing freelancer work etc. Besides that, companys tend to use other software such as AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidwork, NX, Catia... Every industry that require modelling has its own software preference, really.
WOW that's a GREAT release! Way more than I'd hoped for! Thanks to all of you - I've donated, and everyone should do that, to support the best open source CAD offer!
Congrats! This is a huge step towards an open source cad program that can rival the likes of fusion and solidworks. I plan to start using freecad as my daily driver after this update.
The topo-naming problem has been solved?! thats HUGE. Its the main reason why I considered Freecad unusable and resorted to OpenSCAD. Going to give Freecad another spin.
I started learn freecad few days ago,as person who come from blender,at first it really pain in the ass,but now it starting to make sense,I hope freecad evolving like a worm that become a butterfly
I also feel sorry for the end of the Ondsel endeavour. I think it was just a bit too early. Thanks a lot to the developers for giving us this great piece of software! I think FreeCAD is one of the most underrated pieces of FOSS
I'll admit. Freecad does have it's quirks and minor issues. But overall, it's a pretty solid program. The big thing I can think of in terms of quality of life improvements is hardware accelaration and custom hotkeys. Other than that, it's a pretty solid but of CAD software. Assemblies function well enough for most applications, the benches while confusing at first, became a feature I miss with other CAD software. Keep up the good work to the freecad team and let's have many more years to come
Just tried it, congratulation for the big update! the interface is now much cleaner and easy to use. Looks like it's time for me to start using this software more seriously.
Looks super cool! I probably won't use it personally because my job pays for me to have a license to Inventor and I use that all day at work, but it definitely makes CAD much easier for people learning who don't have thousands of dollars a year to pay for it.
Amazing!!!! I will donate as a thank you for this great milestone. Let's all send them some thank$ This is huge for the CAD world , finally freedom from punitive licensing by the profit first crew.

This is the first open source project I actually really want to contribute to. I am really excited and I hope it will be able to replace my fusion 360 license.

Not without the equivalent of blender foundation.
