I find it even better that sure, while looking at Viktor's outfit, you'd consider him belonging to Piltover, but then you notice his leg and cane, therefore exactly underlying the point you just made: Even if he seems symmetrical, a part of him will always be asymmetrical. Just like while he is part of Piltover at the moment, but always remembers his upbringing in Zaun.
i think its so short for the broader audience of arcane who are most certainly not used to watch a few-hour-long breakdowns of every single shot im happy for skyen anyway, he gets to do what he would do anyways and gets recognized by riot good job skyen!
Same, but we don't want to scare the noobs. Once they have a look around and see what they're in for... then we drop the hour long stints about character design and 'animating on 2s'. :P
In regards to the scars as a way to distinguish villains, I would say that Vander also has a scar like Vilco, but he chooses to hide it under his forearm strap that he puts on. As a way to say that he is no longer the same person he used to be and would much rather leave that part of himself behind.
I'm in the same mindset. People hate Silco, but I think his psychology is very interesting, especially with how he shows sympathy towards Powder, and is ultimately going to be shove Powder needs to become Jinx (not that Vi basically abandoning her did the same thing) and I think this is the perfect example of what Riot likes to do with how they make nothing black/white with morality. I really hope they explore the dynamic.
people confuse "I love this character" with "this character is a good person". you can love villain characters, they can be good *characters* AND villains, not necessarily good people
@@TBSkyen It amuses me that they can post a one minute video and get like two hours of free publicity from you, but when they're paying you they're like, "No, that's too much publicity."
while I can understand why denoting villain's with designs of disfigurement can be bad it also makes sense when it is scarring as usually those scars tend to entail the hardships, betrayals, and experiences of the past that made them into the villain and are a good visual indicator of such, however I also think that with that in mind so too should the heroes of any given story also shows signs of disfigurement weather natural or unnatural. It is one thing for the disfigurement of a villain to be scarring, artificial limbs, etc. that are unnatural but we should stray away from the use of natural disfigurements to denote villains like with hunchbacks, or other such. Anyways that's just my opinion on the matter, love your vids and cannot wait for more of Arcane, its such a good series thus far.
I kinda agree, I mean, here it doesn't really bother me because it seems to be part of Zaun's aesthetic, of all Zaun's go through too, their hardship, especially with the fact that Viktor himself is disabled, but yay if done badly or way too often it can be indeed harmful
Actually those are some really cool facts....I love when animators and designers of the style of shows throw in these little things that dont usually stand out too much on the first watch but if you look deeper you see these small details that tell you "yep just visually, these kids are from more poor part of town"... even in Zaun they arent rich or anything...the Chem barons may dress in dark colours to match Zaun but will dress in fashion like Silco...the design of clothes and buildings, streets, architecture...its so good looking
I just wanted to say, it brought such a smile to my face hearing you got sponsored by Riot, _and_ to talk about character design, no less! And hearing you be excited about it even more so, you absolutely deserve it. More recognition for Skyen, let's gooo!
I'm glad Riot ACTUALLY has its eye on you. You are on their radar. I hope they hire you for their writing team or the creative team...or any team in that regard. The're will be a MASS improvement in the lore/design/aesthetics with your input. Arcane is a 10/10 btw...
I personally also interpreted the asymmetry vs symmetry in a more metaphorical way. Zaun being literally physically below Piltover has always been a really on the nose metaphor for their lower social status, and I thought of the level of symmetry as a more subtle take on that... with Zaun and its inhabitants embodying inequality in the form of asymmetry, whereas Piltover / Piltovans feel like all is right and balanced and fair, like how symmetry feels. Just my two cents.
There should be more videos like this. The fashion on this show is WILD! (But in a good way) The outfits makes sense for the characters, the environment they're in and the world they inhabit. It's not odd for the sake of spectacle. The clothing is something that I would imagine the characters actually selecting & making in order to wear. There's a lot more to the fashion in this game, than what is visible from the surface. This is a good example of really taking the time to think through the character design. A whole video can be dedicated to how Jinx's outfit is heavily inspired form Harley Quinn/Joker. And yet it's not until you pay close attention that you get to see all the details.
Gunna add onto Heimer: his outfit serves to ground him. Even in-game, he has had this contrast of having bright primary colors (yellow, red, blue) with wild curls for his head, with this desaturated squared off outfit. A yordle fitting into an uptight high class society. His outfit might also be a bit asymmetrical and downplayed compared to the other Piltovan outfits (being just a fancy coat with big pockets) because unlike the other Council members he doesn't seem to care about showing off his power or his status. I think it's also worth mentioning he has the blonde hair/blue eyes combo, which is a trope that has been used in many stories to depict innocent/youthful characters. Which - as old and wise as he looks - he is shown to be pretty naive.
plEASE do a longer analysis of this! this is genuinely interesting, and a good study for costume/ fashion designers. not everyday you get to see steampunk art deco/ nouveau, so a deeper analysis would be so cool :))))
One more thing to Silco, he tries to dress symmetrical, but the vest is double breasted, his tie asymmetrical in the details. It's more like a facade, trying to hide the true nature. His clothes are also notable not pristine.
By the way! Silcos outfit is NOT symmetrical. His front looks symmetrical but the back of his vest has straps and asymmetry to represent Zaun. Its visible in the scene where he gets up from his chair to talk to the upset jinx in the ceiling. :) I think its smart to make his facade symmetrical but the true side of him (his back thats often hidden) asymmetrical.

But this was extremely interesting too! Looking forward to more videos.
I like how silco starts out as a random bad guy who is just evil, but slowly gets more fleshed out to the point that we actually believe that he would take in powder.
Love this video!! I also wanted to share my breakdown of Powder's outfit, in that being a mix of blue and pink makes total sense from her character perspective. The misshapen, asymmetrical blue outer layer is what people see - her being messy, unpredictable, and ultimately unreliable. However, the LOWER layer of her shirt uses consistent vertical stripes - in a very consistent pattern. As it is also pink, it represents the mental stability that Vi brings to Powder.
I won't lie I did really see the paralle the organic style and color palette of zaun of art nouveau. Vi also has a gender thing happening. Her color pallet is close to Jayce/Viktor, Silco, and Vander. And she’s kind if simple. Practices her skills and does the job. So she dresses a lot more simply than her creative, inventive sister. Powder is an artist. Her fashion matches her artistic style. You can tell she dresses herself and styles her own hair. The two color pinstripes are also representative of things to come.

Haven't really looked into it but Victor stood out to me as one of the few characters with facial moles. Been thinking that it might be a visual foreshadowing of his support of hextech, when you take into consideration of our worlds connection between moles and magic throughout witch lore. Think Bayonetta and her "Witch's Mark." Hextech is basically magic controlled via science, as stated in the show.
Similar to Silco, Viktor's damaged leg means that he never looks perfectly symmetrical, just like how Piltovans always see him as a Zaunite
