ARCANE - Environmental Storytelling

- Arcane is one of the most beautiful, well-crafted and thought-provoking series I've seen in a while. Not just in animation. But as a series in and of itself. I could make thousands of videos surrounding this series, but I've yet to see massive discussion on the way the creatives at Fortiche so perfectly drove the narrative within a development of careful decisions regarding Arcane's environment.
I had MORE than a blast creating this video. Every single scene could be screenshot and used as a phone/pc background. So I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed creating it! And I'll catch you next time!

Arcane is undoubtedly an epitome of atmosphere-fueled storytelling.
Couldn't agree more!! My expectations were medium and it absolutely blew me away!
One of Arcanes best attributes is how every element used to illustrate the difference between the 2 cities no matter how small feels considered.
Like consciously you'd not think about food carrying any significance and it's never really brought up but the way it shows Zaun relying more on meat compared to Piltover using more sweet foods e.g cakes. Is a nice way of showing the luxury/conditions that one has over the other.
The food difference is a really good point! The sloshy meat was a sight for sore eyes for poor Caitlyn 😂😂
oh my gosh you're right!!! I didn't even think of that!
Zaun also shows a reliance on seafood. Seems like a nod to pre-industrial Europe where anything that wasn’t a fish was considered undesirable. The crab, lobster, shrimp, calamari etc… That market reversed because supply and demand raised the price and its desirability.
Would be an interesting bit of history if they’re intentionally showing the lesser known fact that seafood used to be peasant food.
i just realized from the editing in your essay that Silco was "reborn" in water while Powder's fall from grace moment was wreathed in flames. thats cool.
Right?! Such a great contrasting parallel between the two
i don't watch a lot of animation but arcane was drop dead gorgeous. right up there with spider-man: into the spiderverse. so well done. there were a lot of times where i had to rewind because i got lost in the art and was studying it more than following the story.
Completely agree!! Every single shot was just stunning, truly a masterpiece
Thank you, environmental storytelling is a term I wasn't familiar but I noticed about the show. Arcane is a masterpiece of animation and storytelling; even my dad who hates animated works was impressed
I couldn't agree more! I'm glad your dad was able to enjoy it too, just shows how amazing Arcane really is!
Just finished this series this afternoon so perfect timing to feed my growing obsession.
Ha, perfect timing indeed! It took me 12 days to emotionally recover from that ending 😂
The fact that out of all the popular video games out there, it was League of Legends that got one of the best series adaptations for you to review. As always, you don’t disappoint 🎉
Ha! Trust me, I'm just as surprised 😂 Though, with their animatics, the k/da content, it was only a matter of time even without Arcane. They've been killing it!
but the game's lore has always been fantastic! (well, maybe not ALWAYS, they had a rough start, but are just getting better evey new release). I became obsessed with the game because of the characters and theyr stories. the comic books are pretty decent too
Arcane, Castlevenia, The legend of Vox Machina: Need I continue?
Animation in the West has truly leveled up in the last few years
Spiderverse, Invinsible, Mitchell's vs The Machines.. It's such a growing list!
@@linesinmotion It's so interesting to see how Pixar & Sony have advanced animation in different ways. I saw a video Insider put out about how Pixar literally created half the technology we use in 3D software every day like character rigs & rendering advanced textures.
I feel like there's a bit of a Resurgence in Stop Motion, now that's exciting! The House on Netflix is so uncanny, those tiny faces are just perfect 😂 I thought La Casa Lobo was an anomaly but I'm glad I was wrong (Anomalisa is also a great mind Bending film)
Excellent video Dani! The thing I loved the most about it was how you edited the audio and the music. So subtle, yet so powerful. The moment at 4:05 was stellar, how you edited the audio with the closing of the fist that perfectly conveys what you were going for 👌
ahhhh, thank you so much!! (I'll be able to catch up and watch your arcane video later now haha). Tackling the audio and music in this video was a treat, I'm glad some things were noticeable ☺️
I never noticed how Piltovers framing accentuates its symmetry. Brilliant.
Great editing and video as always! The bridge scene of Silco and Jayce is one of my favourite examples of the environmental storytelling. The bridge is reminiscent of the past conflict yet the only hope of compromise, set against a twilight red sky that exists between the light of Piltover and the darkness of Zaun, yet can turn into a violent red in the blink of an eye
Thank you so much, and I was only able to catch on the bridge motif because I was watching so carefully haha
Lines in motion covering arcane? Best thing ever!! Wohoo
haha, only a matter of time before I did!
Excellent work again! And your editing is literally SOOOO MASTERFUL!
Thank you!!!!!!!!!! ☺️ ☺️
Arcane IS Anime and no one can tell me otherwise! Excellent work, very aesthetically subtle editing!
😂😂😂 I mean, the French DO love their anime and manga
I was excited for people’s dissection of Arcane as soon as I watched it, and this video really itched that analysis urge. bless.
There's been so many videos, too! Just goes to show how much there is to pick apart from this show. 👀
Just discovered your channel, and I just have to say that the content is excellent in every sense of the word. We honestly don't deserve writing on this level, but that doesn't stop me from wanting more!
wow, thank you so much for the lovely feedback 😊
One of my favourite youtubers breaking down one of my favourite shows; what a treat 😭😭🥰🥰
omg thank you 😭
I’m so happy that you uploaded. Arcane’s stylized artsyle is quite pleasing to my eyes.
It really is! And thank you 😊
Brilliant commentary. Arcane is a masterpiece.
Another great video !!! Although I have loved arcane for its visual storytelling it was refreshing to see a show this beautiful to handle its topics well.
Since you are going to be making a video about anime, I would love to see your perspective on moribito:guardian of the spirit .
Thank you so much, and damn, I haven't seen that anime in SO many years, I'd have to do rewatch
YESSSS!Oh my gosh I love that anime! I haven't seen it in so long!!! It's absolutely excellent! I'm so glad someone else has heard of it!
Very excellent video! Your editing here is masterful, using Arcane's already strong visual language to prove your points and empower your script and writing~ The sheer contrast between the city above, the wasteland below, and the hope for a better future all blend together to create a complex narrative loved by many. Looking forward to another season of Arcane in time~
I remember watching this show and ending up whit something like 400 SS from backgrounds alone, Good video as always.
Hahaha, I can see why!! But thank you 😊
This was just a wonderfully written, well edited, and wonderfully analyzed video, thank you so much!! also, side note, i can listen to you speak all day, your reading is very nice and soothing to listen to, time to see the rest of your vids since I'm new here hahah!
Thank you so much haha!!
The contrast shown between two cities and ppl living there is just WOW.
Anyways check out *Abstraction* by _kago shintaro_ & *Iceland* by _Yuichi Yokoyama_ ,I recently stumbled upon these two mangaka and their works are just...weird.
I know, the constant is just something else... But oohhh, I haven't heard of them, will have to take a peak, thanks!
Arcane?! ARCANE?!?! HELL YEAH!!!
ARCANNNEEE!!!!!!
@@linesinmotion honestly though, everything about League of Legends is perfect in my eyes...
Everything except the game.
that thumbnail goes so hard
Quite proud of this one haha, ty!!
Writing an essay on exactly this topic for my class and i was so hoping there was a video like this 🙏 ur amazing
I'm not sure the area Viktor played in as a kid is the Sump. Its possible they changed it for the show, but in the lore the sump is the bottom level of Zaun. The upper potion of Zaun, including the cannery where Silco operated out of in act 1 and the area Viktor played in as a kid, is all the Promenade Level, while what we saw of the fissures is likely all the Entresol Level, (except maybe the darker area where Vi and Powder used to live that is now inhabited by shimmer addicts, which could possibly be part of the sump).
Arcane is a true masterpiece and the editing that you do and commentary really shows that
It really it! And thank you 🙏
I'm so glad I found this channel! Love the way you transition from talking about a certain aspect or character to another. Really well crafted video
Ayyyeee LIM is back for another Masterpiece video on actual MASTERPIECE of a show
Thank you 🙏🙏 and I agree, arcane IS a masterpiece
What a wonderful video! I've been looking for a video that would compile most of the little details and bits in arcane that I saw scattered among countless other videos. Great work!
Thank you! And there are SO many Arcane videos out there, it's astonishing just how much people can take apart this series with something new.
Finally! You upload fast, wasn't even done watching the series yet.
haha, I hope this video doesn't spoil too much for you then!
Your content is just masterful level quality. You deserve recognition and more. Thank you for the work that you do.
Thank you so much, I appreciate the kind words and support 🙇♀️
excellent and insightful analysis. there were so many neat details you pointed out that i wouldn't have noticed otherwise!
Thank you so much!
Arcane is such an amazing series! Beautiful video as always!!
Thank you, as always! And I totally agree, such an amazing series 👏
This Channel is just nothing but beautiful. Thank you so much for these gorgeous Videos
Aw, thank you so much for the love!
I just can't get enough of Arcane Analysis Videos. Great vid :D
Ah, you've changed the colour of your pfp, took me a second then haha. But i can't wait to watch all the ones I missed out on now!
@@linesinmotion just realised i switched yt accounts, that's why i have 2 different pfp xD
Your writing/narrations style is something. Honestly, perfectly in place with the quality of the series just covered. I legitimately don't recall listening to a better flowing opinion piece that is so impersonal, yet mirrors what I imagine sometimes goes through out head when we think critically.
I can't imagine how long this took to compose, and how long the proper footage that's seemingly always perfectly timed to match what you're saying. And as I hinted at before, it's not like most videos "See guys, look, you see the green lighting right? Yeah that's trying to invoke X feeling, imagine what it would feel to breath air this color". No, the video is presented as a constant run-on sentence/thought, but without literally any of the negatives that would come to mind when saying such a thing. Simply an every progressing thought almost.
Can't tell if it's the voice or the pacing, but seriously surprised how well presented this is.
Apologies for the late reply! But thank you so, so much. Comments like these always make my day, I can tell you took a good amount of time writing this lovely comment and I appreciate it a lot, truly!
@@linesinmotion I did? Felt like about a minute to write >_> And as for appreciating it.. not as much as I appreciated the video :-] Thanks again L.I.M. !
Hey I just discovered your channel and the amount of effort and insight you put into your videos is incredible and thought-provoking! I am looking foward for your next one.
Thank you so much, I appreciate the kind words 😊
Thank you for putting so much effort into your videos 😍
My pleasure 🙏 Thank you for watching and supporting
As always: incredible video. Thanks.
Thank you!!
god this is such an absolutely amazing video for an amazing show
Thank you so much 🥺
@@linesinmotion im so mad this has less views that your regular work, watched it again, binging all your stuff again haha
This is BEAUTIFULLY written!
Thank you! ☺️
0:01 I absolutely love this
haha, thank you! I had fun creating that little bit
I loved all the examples!
Thank you!
I have been waiting for this video since you teased of its inception! I'm still watching it, but I love the way you write the script so much. It flows beautifully and conveys the message well. Also, fun fact I noticed while watching this video-- around 0:53 , that train in Piltover reminds me a lot of Angel's Flight in LA (a diagonal train of sorts).
Thank you so much, I'm glad it met expectations haha. I'm not familiar with that train but having googled it, I totally see what you mean!
Great video and great editing/voiceover! Surprised that it doesn't have more views - some algorithm trickery?
Thank you very much, and yeah, for some reason youtube really hasn't liked this video of mine compared to some of my others idk why 😅😅
I really like your editing and voice :D
Thank you haha 😄
I just started watching this series and I have come to the conclusion that Viktor is the best boi.
Also this series is truly perfection. Every single detail.
Great work!
Thank you!
@@linesinmotion No thank you for your hard work to entertain and enlighten us
Another LiM video!!! Yay!!
Always a pleasure to watch your videos!
Thank you so much!!
first saw you from the owlhouse vid. your vids are great keep it up 👍
great video
Thank you very much!
Well DoNe. Subd. Thank you
Thank you for another video so soon. ;-;
My pleasure, thank you for watching!! ☺️☺️
@@linesinmotion always, your videos are so well edited and composed; in addition with you voice they're great!
ur voice reminds me of klaire de lys, what accent is that? so soothing
haha, that's surprising! I have the Birmingham (uk) accent
AYEEEEE
FYI: Zaun doesn't exist in arcane, the whole city is still Piltover. The lower city is actually the original start of Piltover.
You're right! I saw people in the Arcane subreddit saying this! (I still have a lot to learn from the whole LoL lore). That it's not fully known as zaun yet in the show. In context, I guess I'm saying zaun because "the undercity" is a mouthful to say a lot of times haha, and most audiences know what i mean 😂
@@linesinmotion I only learned myself not too long ago..Also, did you notice Vi's shoulder shrug she does throughout the entire series? It's damaged from the steel door falling on her in Ep:3. It probably aches constantly and gets stiff easily. She often does it just before or during combat to try and loosen it up. It's the little things like that that make Arcane so great.
Oh wow, I also saw a professional fighter on twitter mention it's also a very common tick to have due to pressure on the back and shoulders when dealing massive blows... the attention to detail is astonishing!!!
Where are you from, words like pride and white stood out abit to me (proyde and whoyte in my ears.. ;p)
haha, I'm from Birmingham (uk), so that's definitely why 😂
@@linesinmotion ok, cheers!!
Popcorn ceiling?
: ) D
Get a pop-filter or something. The S's and T's are _sharp_ .
I actually have two pop filters and even used vst filters to make those sounds softer 😭😭 I have got a new mic on the way thankfully so hopefully that'll be fixed tho!!
Arcane is where I go for my gap tooth fetish. Noice
