This is the first Led Zeppelin song. It may not seem like much today, but when people bought this album for the first time, the first thing they heard was the intro to this song. People were absolutely mind blown. It was something so unbelievable and agressive to them. A lot of famous musicians from those times said "I couldn't believe it. I just couldn't believe my ears. It was something so agressive and mean, I was speechless". That's why this song is so highly regarded, it was people's introduction to The Led Zeppelin. Coolest thing in this song are the triplets on the bass drum: 2:38, 2:44, 3:50, 4:28, 4:33. The thing is that he is doing this with ONE drum pedal. One foot. This amazing playing is why John Bonham is considered the greatest drummer of all time. Going thru all the Zeppelin albums will completely change your life, like it changed mine.

So jazzed that you’re doing the Zep Run!!!
Yes, this first song was geared to highlighting each member and letting them all have their moment to shine.
The album is called Zep I. Their first four albums just go by number.
Jimmy Page, the founder and guitarist ( and producer). Had the whole album in his head when he got the band together. They recorded it in late Sept, early Oct of 1968, about two months after they formed. Jimmy paid for the studio time and the sound engineering. He wanted to be able to take a finished product with him when he snd Peter Grant ( the band manager) negotiated terms of contract with the record companies. They wanted Atlantic Records, and they got it. Perhaps the best contract any new band had ever gotten, with TOTAL CREATIVE CONTROL which was almost unheard of for an unknown band. Page and Grant had allot of business savy.
Page deliberately kept them out of the Top 40 singles market. Zeppelins music was album music and with the underground FM radio stations on the rise in the US, Jimmy had a game plan: get on FM Radio, gets lots of play, and then close the deal with fans through live performance. Which they did. In January of 1969, they were an unknown band. By January of 1970, they were playing The Royal Albert Hall. Unbelievable. That year they were voted the top British band, taking the title from The Beatles.

@@MusicForTheSoulReactions I’m an old lady, and was in college when they hit the airwaves. I had four of their albums in my collection. I was a fan, but not a Zephead at the time. During the pandemic, however, I used allot of my time doing a deep dive into Zeppelin…interviews, books, concerts…….as well as studying the “after Zep” careers of all three. It was very interesting and gratifying. They were all interesting people, and Plant was especially fascinating to me. Intelligent. Personable lovely speaking voice (😁😏)
And a vast knowledge of American and North African music, British history, Welsh and Nordic mythology. I could listen for hours. Jimmy Page as well. Fascinating dude. I suppose I became a true “Zephead” in my 70’s! 😁. It makes the music even more enjoyable when you know something of their personalities and interests.

I appreciate you taking the advice from all of us Ledheads, Zepheads, or just plain Led Zeppelin fans, of listening to Zeppelin from start to finish, and no they're not all head bangers, but just as enjoyable. They cover many genres and styles, that's what makes them the greatest band, their versatility in music. They also put out many experimental tracks that ended up being some of their greatest masterpieces. There are only a couple of songs that are regarded as not being up to par with the rest of their studio catalog, which is The Crunge and Hot Dog, however I like both of them, many others do as well.
You're in for one helluva ride, looking forward to your future LZ reactions

This rocking 60s pop song (also Your Days will Come) was rarely played on our radio. When LZ conquered the music world barely a year later with the anthem Whole Lotta Love, as a teenager I didn't initially realize that this was the same band. I really learned to love the debut album as a CD in the 80s: two brilliant, almost prog music journeys Dazed And Confusey and How Many More Times (simply brilliant, long live standards), three bluesy Baby I'M Gonna Leave, I Can't Quit You Baby and the more rock Willie Dixon cover You Shook Me, the short guitar interlude Black Mountain Side and the short rock farz Communication Breakdown (similar to Immigrant Song; never forgive JP why his 1' solo isn't on the 2nd album).
For me, this debut is an album that you have to let yourself fall into in order to really discover and enjoy it musically like LZ III. Some younger people totally underestimate the musical significance of the time. LZ II+IV are albums for every mood, e.g. also for jogging, driving in traffic jams, cleaning..., musically versatile, but somehow very pleasing.
HOTH has 4-5 great songs (some of them music tours), then I get "problems" with 2 band members, or to put it another way: they had their personal problems, which in my opinion somehow flowed into the later studio albums👍✌.

So, this song was our first introduction to Led Zeppelin, and it just blew our minds. It's hard to explain, maybe it hit different then because it sounded like nothing we heard before. It was incredibly exciting!
You asked if they have any duds. That depends on who you ask. In my opinion, there are maybe a couple not my favorites, but their "worst" are better than other's best. Some say "The Crunge" and "Hot Dog" are their "worst", but I (and many others) absolutely adore those songs!

Zeppelin was unlike anything people heard in the 60s. There were some real rocking songs like from Hendrix, etc. But, it still carried that late 60s somewhat hippie buzz. Zeppelin came in and kicked the door down. The playing, the vocals, the riffs, the songs were so bluesy but, harder in the rock.
That drumming was by John Bonham. The most influential drummer of the rock era. He changed the way drums were heard and played. Before it is was softer and more or less time keepers. They were in the background barely noticed. Bonham burst onto the scene with his loud drumming and his triplets and made drums an essential sound to be heard. The bass was done by the extraordinary John Paul Jones. He played all kinds of string instruments and was a master of all. Plus he did keyboard. He was a master musician. The founder of Led Zeppelin was the guitarist Jimmy Page - the best guitarist of rock. An amazing player who also produced their albums and wrote the music.
Vocals was Robert Plant. He was the best vocalist in rock next to the amazing Freddie Mercury. Robert also wrote most of the lyrics to the songs.
All 4 members were GOATS. The best musicians and they laid the groundwork for rock bands to come. Only they were influenced by LZ but, could never match them for their music and musicianship. They were just such a force that has never had an equal.

@@MusicForTheSoulReactions yes it is. Page was in The Yardbirds & all the other members quit, they still had contracts for 6 Scandinavian gigs. Page had about 2 weeks or so to find guys to replace them. He knew JPJ from being sessions musicians, he tried getting singer Terry Reid, but he wasn’t available. Reid recommended Robert Plant whom he had heard, & Page went & checked him out. He invited Plant back to his place, & they had similar tastes in music. Plant recommended Bonham for drums, they were friends from about 14 & played in a band or 2 together. Their first rehearsal was on August 19,1968, first song they played they knew they had something really good. They did those 6 gigs in September, as The New Yardbirds. Came back to England & late September or early October recorded produced mixed & edited the album, all in 4 days & a total of 35 hours. Page & their manager Peter Grant funded this endeavor. Page while being a sessions musician learned about producing mixing & editing, which he did all their albums, with help of engineers. Their second album was recorded in 13 different studios across the US, while touring & was released in October of (1969). Sorry I went on & on, but it’s all such an amazing story. Oh they also came to the US on December 26,1968, & toured before their album was released. A great video about the start of their success in the US, it’s called something like Led Zeppelin The Breaking Of America at the Boston Tea Party. It’s very interesting about 20 minutes.

I'm thrilled you've taken advice and decided to do the catalogue in album/track order. Since you're taking on this endeavor, a little band history: The name came from a time when guitarist Jimmy Page was still a session musician and was helping his good friend Jeff Beck (perhaps you've heard of him? If not, you should) record an album. In addition to Jeff and Jimmy, they had Keith Moon (drummer for The Who), John Paul Jones (fellow session musician along with Jimmy, JPJ is his stage name, his real name is John Baldwin), and Nicky Hopkins. The Who's bassist John Entwistle was also supposed to be there but didn't show. The recording went so well, they all briefly considered maybe forming a group together. Depending on which version of the story you hear, either Moon or Entwistle said such a group would go over like a lead balloon. Jimmy Page would go on to join Jeff in The Yardbirds, but once they disbanded, Page wanted to start his own group and remembered the comment. He changed "lead" to "led" and "balloon" to "Zeppelin" - and PRESTO!
Please, do learn their names and roles: Jimmy Page - founder, all guitars and producer for the band, John Paul Jones - bassist, all keys (piano, organ, synth, etc.), multi-instrumentalist, and occasional music arranger, John Bonham - drummer extraordinaire (sadly passed in 1980), and Robert Plant - vocalist and harmonica player. Both Jimmy and JPJ were London based, having known of each other from the session musician world first, while both Bonham and Plant were from The Midlands and had been good friends for years, even being in some of the same groups together. The album was recorded in about 36 hours, having been paid for by Jimmy. This time in music was the start of what was called "Album Oriented Music (or AOM)". I don't know if the UK has FM/AM radio channels, but in the US, we started with AM radio stations which played pop music's top 20 or 10 hits and songs pretty much stuck to the formula of 3-3.5 minute running time. When FM radio came along, they didn't have those constraints and were free to play songs of any length, sometimes an album side, or even occasionally the entire album. FM became the home of AOM, which meant bands like Led Zeppelin could stretch and explore their capabilities. They were musical visionaries both in and out of the studio. Things like "best/worst" songs are going to be subjective. Personally, I don't have a "worst" song, maybe a couple I like a little less than others; however, I do have a favorite, which you'll arrive at in due time. Something I tell everyone is that I think you'll come to find Zep's music is one that speaks to moods and emotions and the same song can hit you differently depending on the day you've been having. Their music can be an invitation, or sometimes a demand. Some are subtly beguiling, others hit like a hammer. Some shimmer, some menace. They explore dichotomies like "light and shade", "tight but loose", and "whisper to thunder". There are secrets to be lost and found, and they can be wonderfully transportive with a variety of meanings as unique as the individual listening to them with the only limitation being what you place on them. Apologies for the long post but welcome to the Zep family and I look forward to watching how you get on with it.

I love Zep! IMO, they don't lay a turd until their fifth album, Houses of The Holy. The Crunge is not that good, and D'yer Mak'er is just aweful. Other than that, it's alll good until In Through the Outdoor, an appropriate name for that album. By that point, they were running out of steam. Overall, one of the most consistent catalogs ever.We have a long way to go before you hit some bumps. Love tuning in while I work from home. Signing out US Roadie 1!
