It's so nice to see young guys like you two appreciate music that I grew up with. That was Robert Plant singing throughout. It's a superstar band. Guitar, bass AND drums. are special. Plants voice is unique. At the time there was no-one like him. Many copycats followed. You must watch them live. I think I mentioned the song 'Since I've Been Loving You' live 1973 MSG. I was 15 when this album was released and it changed my listening habits and made me want to stop playing my piano and learn guitar. Drove my parents crazy lol. Memories...

Their very first song. It blew everyone away. My brother-in-law talks about the time he was driving, had the radio on, and BAM!, THIS!! He was at a traffic light was so engrossed with the song he didn’t notice the light had turned green. And he had the volume up so loud he didn’t hear all the honking. Back then, you could only hear it on the radio. He said he drove to the closest place where he could pull off. Then he immediately went to the record store and bought the album. He went home and told his younger brother (my husband) to come with him to his bedroom. Then they listened to that entire first Led Zepplin album. Which is crazy great. I’ve heard similar stories. The real beginning of the rock era. This one song catapulted The Beatles off the top of the charts. Then, Zepplin never had to look back. There are so many Led Zepplin songs. I think it’s important to bring home the fact this is the world’s introduction to this band and try to put it in context of what was out there heretofore it.

So glad you're starting at the beginning with Led Zeppelin. Prepare yourselves to be constantly amazed. It's sometimes difficult to believe how young these guys were when they recorded this album in 1968 (dropped in 1969). Clearly, all four were incredibly gifted. Keep in mind that there was no auto tune back then. What you're hearing is just how they sounded.
Robert Plant - vocals - had just turned 20
John Bonham - drummer - also only 20
    John Paul Jones - bass/keys - 22 years old
Jimmy Page - guitarist and producer - 24 years old
That's all Plant singing, great range and very versatile. I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of the way he used his voice as you listen to more songs along the way. The other guys would sing back up from time to time but the only song during which they had another singer come in was for "The Battle of Evermore" on their 4th album. Female singer named Sandy Denny.
Really enjoyed your reaction. Great song from Zeppelin right out of the gate. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the rest of the tracks on this album. Thanks and cheers!
Edit: I was just 13 years old when Led Zeppelin hit the scene. 50+ years later, they still amaze me. And I still have all of my albums in vinyl that I bought as soon as they dropped. Ah, nothing like setting that needle down and letting them rip. ;)

You reacted to alot about Elvis, but just a piece of history for you, Elvis step brother, was listening to a Led Zeppelin record at Graceland one day, and Elvis heard it, and asked about them, because he liked their sound, and actually went to one of their concerts, and met them, and they came to one of his shows, and Elvis found out Robert Plant the singer, and the other members, was a big fan of his. Although they had different music styles, they had a mutual respect for what each other did musically. And Elvis respected their work ethic, they were churning out album after album and touring constantly.

This is the best way to go through Led Zeppelin, start at the beginning with Led Zeppelin 1 through Led Zeppelin 'In Though the Out Door'.
Zeppelin is considered a Rock band, but they played many different genres throughout the the years as the grew as a band. Considering, Plant and Bonham were 19 and Page and Jones were in their early 20's when they started. Going through their album collection, you can hear the growth as they matured.
Plus, if you go through the albums, you will notice how the songs are placed in a way to enjoy the whole album as it is. Not just one song, then skip to a next favorite song.
There is really no bad Led Zeppelin song. And that is something that is said just by avid fans. Like they say, "Everyone is a Zeppelin fan, some just don't know it yet".

Excellent review guys. Robert Plant sang lead vocals on every song in their catalog but one in which he shared the mic. with Sandy Denny of the group Fairport Convention. It was on a song called "The Battle of Evermore". Her voice was a perfect match with Plant for that particular song, which is very acoustic featuring Page playing mandolin. Never the less a very vocally powerful song. The origin of Led Zep began with Jimmy Page leaving the Yardbirds, and with one of the Yadbirds co-producers Peter Grant, decided to start a new band with Grant as the Manager. Grant and Page knew the Bass player would be JPJ as they were aware of his ability through Page and JPJ playing together as studio session musicians on other recording artists LP's. I don't recall if Bonham came next or if it was Plant but Grant and Page scoured the UK watching various drummers performing in the clubs. Once they heard Bonham they knew they had their man. Page loved his power and knew it would be a perfect fit with the musical direction he wanted to pursue. As a side note Bonham had been kicked out of numerous previous bands because he was too loud and raucous. What? Apparently those bands didn't want a beast in their midst. Keep em coming. Thanks!

Song one of led Zeppelin 1 is the introduction to John Bonham.. Previous comments say that plant saying this song independently however John Bonham was a backing vocal.. This is a fact.. In fact led zeppelin never did this song in a live show until many years later. The trumpets obviously are called triplets in quadruples.
What triple is a set of notes played in one music bar?. On top of the trip blitz he is playing a double. Hi hat shuffle and the snare is running at 4 4 time with the guitar.
Most of the time drummer John Bonham got in with the guitar rather than the base. This enabled John Paul Jones. To add in his own baselines. To add a extra rhythm to all of their songs. The secret to led Zeppelin is they play in dependently to their songs but yet they Stay synchronized.

Led Zeppelin's early stuff from the first two albums in 1969, are their best in my opinion. They were hungry, and raw, and gritty. At their heart, Led Zeppelin is a Blues Band. Much of their stuff was taken either directly, or indirectly from the old original, American negro Blues masters of the 1920s and 30s. Same for many artists and Bands like The Rolling Stones, Eric Burden and The Animals, Van Morrison, and many more. The Bands from the mid 1960s on, were all influenced by the likes of Lead Belly, Blind Mellon Jefferson, Muddy Waters etc.
    Thanks guys

Robert is the only vocalist, his range was unbelievable back then. They only had a guest vocalist once on one song - The Battle of Evermore on Zep 4, her name was Sandy Dennis. JPJ always took you to church with his organ playing and his bass playing was par none. He also plays mandolin, too!

Y'all would enjoy the band Little Feat. The live album Waiting for Columbus is a classic from start to finish. Their music is a perfect mix of blues, country, jazz, and rock with some gumbo and crawfish etouffee thrown in for seasoning .

On Led Zeppelin 4, which featured Stairway, was "The Battle of Evermore", which was written by Page on the mandolin, borrowed from Jones. Plant added lyrics inspired by a book he was reading about the Scottish Independence Wars. The track features a duet between Plant and Fairport Convention's Sandy Denny, who provides the only female voice to be heard on a Led Zeppelin recording. Plant was the only singer apart from her, ever.

It was massive wasn't it - in 1960 everything sounded so different, still early rock 'n' roll and easy listening, and in just a few years, this 😀

Whats crazy is this album is 50+ yrs old and we're still trying to pick our jaws up off our chests! Is that a single bass drum? YES! Is that one dude singing? YES! Can a bass player player play a perfect bassline? Ask JPJ! Don't even look at that guitar player! Jimmy will finish his whiskey, and fuck you up! Lol! Page used his Yardbirds money to finance the first Zep album. He had total creative control in its production. It is so raw you can hear every squeak of Bonzo's hi hat pedal! There is a live concert of theirs from '68 or '69 before they had any money. They were wearing jeans and sneakers, and they sounded THIS good live. Its worth looking for.

The astonishing thing was Bonham did that with a single pedal. The pedals back then were pretty good, but still it was something nobody else was doing, fast triplets on the bass drum.

  • @davidstephens6462
    @davidstephens6462 Год назад

He did use double kicks, not a double pedal, but actual double kick drums. That put your left foot close to 2 feet away from your hi hat pedal with the size of his kick drums. He was known to use up to a 30 inch kick. Serious coordination!
