I’m a Man: Song by Chicago (Terry Kath on Guitar)
Steve Winwood wrote the song, originally done by the Spencer Davis Group. Chicago played recorded it for their debut album in 1969. Terry Kath’s guitar is as awesome as ever!
Here’s the TAB: www.dropbox.co...
Kath was such a monster on guitar
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks Mark.
I don’t use my wah enough…
Here’s another great lesson I will learn. I already have a simple version of this song but no solos and no real soul…
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Lot of these classic rock players are imitated today with ease but nobody was playing like Kath in those days. Nor Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, and many more. Kath was brilliant.
He was indeed a brilliant player. And as far as I know it was all improvised. He had that slight sloppiness (I mean that in the best way!) that is so hard to really get down. Like Page at his best. Plus, he played all out. None of that sort of Frampton in-control stuff. (Love Frampton's play too, but it was much more restrained.) In his best stuff, Kath seems to me like Alvin Lee, but with better timing. I admire all of those cats who paved the way!
Wade Older Ritchie Blackmore?
Oh yeah buddy. Man you nailed that lick down. That is fantastic. Mark, I wished I lived in Ithaca lol. I'd jam with you all the time :D I'm serious. Thank you and by all means enjoy the day today!!
Thanks David. Definitely a fun one to do. I could always use more buddies to jam with ... and more time to do it too. So come on down (or up) when you'd like!
Love this song and Chicago as a band
Great job again Mark.
Thanks Rick!
Man I can't stop watching you play it. You're gonna run me late for work LLLOOOLLL
LOL!
Thanks Mark. Always appreciate your posts and the effort you go to to help us all! It's been a fav of mine since CTA first started getting airplay for it. I'm not sure what section of Kath's lead that you tab'ed for us. Perhaps another time you could give a lesson on the ascending line that come's right before Kath starts singing the first verse on the studio version.
StudioVanier You're welcome. Thanks for watching. This particular lick was requested and comes from their live version at Tanglewood in 1970. I love the studio version too. I can add that particular ascending lick to the list!
I find Terry Kath challenging!!
Ha! That's an understatement! I took a stab a while back at the ascending line. GTR Pickup into vocal:
#|-----8---------------------------------------------------13b--
#|-8b----11-8----------------------------------------11-13------
#|------------10b12r10-8---------------------8-10/12------------
#|-----------------------10-8-----------8h10--------------------
#|---------------------------------8h10-------------------------
#|----- ----------------------8h10------------------------------
It's not quite right and I apologize that the formatting above didn't copy-paste correctly but hopefully you'll get the gist.
Yeah, that's pretty much it from what I remember. It's a killer lick for sure!
Killed it!! But, I was expecting a Tele for this one. Great stuff, Mark.
Well, if I had one ... then maybe!! :) Actually, in the live performance at Tanglewood (where this is taken from), Terry Kath played a strat. He literally banged the front of it until it was out of tune, then went on playing (bending to make the notes right) then tuning up one of the strings during a drum break and coming at it again. For 1970 the strat was really over driven. So I figured the PRS with its overly hot bridge pup would do okay. You should check out the performance. Really fun to watch and listen to!
@@MarkZabel It's a great solo in the live version you mention. The intensity of Kath and the band is amazing. The Strat surprised me too, but he really plays the hell out of it, and his tone is much fiercer than you hear in most Strat players of the time other than Hendrix. Although Kath wasn't a Hendrix copyist, you can hear why Jimi thought highly of him.
Love it!
Thanks!
Super merci !!! thanks you very much!!!!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
hi, I love the solo lesson but can you also do the intro and rhythm parts sometime? Thanks.
Sure thing! Chicago really were great back then, eh? !!!
Cool
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow !!!!! You nailed it,,, I have to listen to that song now ! What a great jam ! You played a lot of this stuff in your day I bet Mark,,, PS,,,,, Credit should really be directed to the Spencer Davis Group they wrote this great song ! 😁🖒🎸🎼
Yes, played it plenty when I was in HS. Super fun jam, especially if you've got a good drummer and bassist! Steve Winwood wrote the song and played it with the Spencer Davis Group. Chicago (Transit Authority) recorded it for their debut album. Chicago was a jam band early on before they got all Peter Cetera Air Supply on us! :) Even Peter Cetera was cool back then!
Mark Zabel. I just learned this, I had no idea till now, Steve Winwood really got around ! Lol !!! and yes, the drums and bass are just awesome !!! They don't write them like this anymore,,, weeping,,, lol !!!
@@MarkZabel Winwood co-wrote it with Jimmy Miller. The SDG version is great, and some of the live versions are worth listening to for the way Winwood comps and stabs on the Hammond (as well as his incomparable voice). Such a simple song, but it grooves.
Mark ... any chance you might do a lesson of a Hans Theessink version of "I'm A MAN" ... his super slow bluesy acoustic style ??? PLEASE !
Hi! I can give it a shot. I can do "dead thumb", but I'm not much of a slide player.
@@MarkZabel I think the version I have ( audio only ) off his album is acoustic and no slide. I would send a link to it but it is not on youtube.
I'll see if I can find the song. What's the name of the album? Thanks!
@@MarkZabel "Jedermann Remixed" ( The Soundtrack ) - Hans Theessink - Blues 2011 On it he also does a cool super slow version of "Sympathy For The Devil"
Mark could you possibly do a lesson on Wake Up Little Susie? I’ll be playing it in an old folks home in the coming weeks.
Hi. Yes, it's on my list. I won't be home for a while, so I won't be able to do new (well, to me anyhow) RUclips videos. Shoot me an email though, okay?
Yes for sure!
Nice guitar, what is it exactly? thanks for the lesson.
My pleasure. It's a PRS SE 24 Standard.
Hi Mark your PRS is that a ??model number
SE Standard 24. Cheapest one there is. Amazing for the money ... actually, just amazing period. Best playing guitar I own. Very, very solid. Excellent tremolo, great tuners ... even a nice gig bag. The pickups are a little hot for my taste, but it's hard to complain.
Thanks Mark your a great guitar player and teacher Thank u
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
