As a fellow miniature painter, I can second this sentiment. I’m glad OP got away from those people, she was surrounded by monsters so much that she thought that was normal.
The introverted nerds are the real safe option. Knowing every obscure detail of Warhammer lore does not mix with being a fuckboy at all, which means a guy like that couldn't cheat if he wanted. Which he doesn't want because you're the first woman to give him a chance in probably years, and the fact you keep giving him chance each morning is a gift he'll be forever thankful for. Trust me, I am him, and when my girlfriend asked me to tell her 40k lore I was almost as happy as when she said yes and became my fiance. Luckily for me I don't need to worry about her cheating either. I mean, she's hot and has an amazing personality, she absolutely could if she wanted, but the thing is she's very strongly believing Christian, and basically, she would prefer not to suffer eternal torment, and some guy's bigger junk ain't worth that. Narcissism or main-character syndrome. They think everything revolves around them and that they can do no wrong even when they do and that people should bend over backwards to simply get to talk to them let alone be related/in a relationship with them, so when that doesn't go their way and people stop enabling them, they act like victims, fake apologies, just sink to an entire new low. These people tend to either have some kind of mental disorder or are made by parents during their childhood and have had no-one cause reality to hit them.

LoL my wife is the ex cheerleader and I am that D&D guy. She pretty much said the same thing that I was the kind of guy she could trust as we both been cheated on from the most closets people to us. Hers was a man she knew since they where kids and where together for 8 years. For me it was a childhood friend I had known for over 10 years. Funny thing is the wedding was renaissance themed as she thought it would be fun and different from a regular wedding. 20 years later and we are still as strong as when we first met.

The stepmother manipulated her father and gradually turned him against her. I think the father started to miss see and set up the lunch in an attempt to reconcile, but the step mother convinced him not to.
Having cancer, a child or both is not a reason to constantly take sides, especially within your family. OP did well in staying away as much as OP could. Now OP can focus on improving and not on the sad events that occurred.

Wtf was wrong with that father? Firstly he didn't let her live her teenage years peacefully and made her work for her sister's medical bills where he should have protected her than abandoned his daughter at that stage where for years she was in depression and was suicidal and when all that wasn't enough that restaurant incident. Hopefully he spends a lot of years in death bed alone regretting his actions and death doesn't come to him.
2 things 1 moving usually can help. It's what I did and it definitely gets a weight off your shoulders when you move 3k miles (for me atleast) to a completely new place and not being who you were in the past. and 2 Karmic Justice will come for OP I can't imagine a family built on cheaters with one pining after someone is gonna be very healthy(feel bad for the kid) but being married having fun and possibly having kids, your family is gonna hate having to be part of the dysfunctional couple versus the functional one.
OP's dad is terrible and one of the worst fathers in the world. Not only did you prioritize your stepdaughter over your own flesh and blood. You stood her up, wasn't man enough to tell her why, and had your wife give OP a lame excuse. COWARD!!! I'm glad that OP has surrounded herself with genuine people and met someone who can make her happy. (Nerds for the win by the way.). I do hope one day that the sister realizes what she did and is truly genuinely sorry for what she did because it seems that the step-sister really does miss OP and the bond that they had. OP’s dad essentially turned his back on his own blood daughter for another woman’s child for no good reason. It blows my mind how parents can so easily turn their backs on their own children. And her sister going behind her back to sleep with her boyfriend for over 4 months is beyond gross. She probably was jealous of OP. I’m confused why she thought OP would still want a relationship with her and be in her life. Maybe she got too used to getting everything she wanted just because she had cancer once as a kid. The story is heartbreaking, but one thing I'll never get about Reddit is the fact they start saying your parents "pushed responsibilities onto you". This is ofc utter bs. 1. It's absolutely normal that elder siblings take care of the younger ones and no, this isn't negotiable, it's part of being in the family unit. Sure they aren't a parent substitute, but in this situation it's more than justified to demand extra support from EVERYONE, including her sister. 2. For centuries parents, especially fathers weren't at home most of the time, so even historically, the mothers and siblings were basically the parents. So yeah... I understand OP and her actions, that's a different story, but no, the parents didn't overstep their parental authority by demanding that the sibling helps her sick sister.
They actually did. Demanding she drop every extra curricular is overstepping. Also having her take her to every appointment, and requiring her whole paycheck for her medical bills. Is overstepping. This isnt the old ages, and as someone who was pretty much handed all their siblings with no help from either parental unit, while working at 16, going to school, never really seeing friends. Thats overstepping, and punishing her when she rightfully got upset about ONE thing she enjoyed.... Her step mom even admitted they overstepped and got to tied up in her own emotions thinking she wasnt going to live. And no, Im not upset about that part, because its understandable....But she knows she overstepped, and put to much expectations on OP. Children, teens especially, need to have freedom and socializing. OP is a wonderful sibling for willingly doing everything, but she should never have been expected or asked to do those things...She shouldve been allowed to stay in Volleyball as a compromise for dropping everything else she had to.

But I sometimes feel that Reddit has this unrealistic and imho just priviledged view on childhood. Life isn't a piece of cake and it's not only ok, but sometimes necesarry (as a parenting instrument or just due to circumstances) that children take on responsibilities way earlier that what people think is appropriate. We luckily aren't in the dark ages and while there's some missed opportunities (just like anywhere in life) it's imho not such a big deal.
Nah, that's called parentification, and it's extremely unhealthy for kids. As long as it's only occasionally, and it's not the sort of thing that interferes in the older kid's normal lives, it's fine, but if they're on the hook to be a babysitter at every turn, that's just the parents taking advantage of them and robbing them of their childhood.

2 things 1 moving usually can help. OP’s dad essentially turned his back on his own blood daughter for another woman’s child for no good reason. It blows my mind how parents can so easily turn their backs on their own children. The story is heartbreaking, but one thing I'll never get about Reddit is the fact they start saying your parents "pushed responsibilities onto you". This is ofc utter bs.
1. It's absolutely normal that elder siblings take care of the younger ones and no, this isn't negotiable, it's part of being in the family unit. Sure they aren't a parent substitute, but in this situation it's more than justified to demand extra support from EVERYONE, including her sister.
2. For centuries parents, especially fathers weren't at home most of the time, so even historically, the mothers and siblings were basically the parents.
So yeah... I understand OP and her actions, that's a different story, but no, the parents didn't overstep their parental authority by demanding that the sibling helps her sick sister.
They actually did. Demanding she drop every extra curricular is overstepping.
Also having her take her to every appointment, and requiring her whole paycheck for her medical bills. Is overstepping.
This isnt the old ages, and as someone who was pretty much handed all their siblings with no help from either parental unit, while working at 16, going to school, never really seeing friends. Thats overstepping, and punishing her when she rightfully got upset about ONE thing she enjoyed....
Her step mom even admitted they overstepped and got to tied up in her own emotions thinking she wasnt going to live. And no, Im not upset about that part, because its understandable....But she knows she overstepped, and put to much expectations on OP.
Children, teens especially, need to have freedom and socializing. OP is a wonderful sibling for willingly doing everything, but she should never have been expected or asked to do those things...She shouldve been allowed to stay in Volleyball as a compromise for dropping everything else she had to.
