I was an apprentice at the works in 1974,it was very sad to see the 7000's and Westerns cut up.We managed to save one, D1062, that was preserved by the WLA.We painted it for the 1975 open day.The railways were run in the proper manner in those days. Was great to be a part of the workforce, proper craftsmen.
Great video was threre somewhere age 15 with mates from manchester on that tour ended up in landore for the open day if i remember right was a good day.
ive only got photos of swindo works never had the video then, the warship was still there when i went and also a couple of class 27s,i cant believe they scrapped that warship.crackin vid keep them coming
Cheer up! We still got the parts, so we could put it back together, if we really want to. While in the other hand, we still got some metal that culd be reused....
@MrJezza31 they were, i have 50 020 model, they were all great, 25, 31, 37, 40, 45, 46, 47, 50, 52, 45, 57, but my favs were the 55s, i saw rsg ysterday on the ecml, tyne yard, it really was magic, i cant be bothered with todays trains, i only go to the track now when one of the above diesels is on a railtour or a steam engine
That site is now an out of town retail outlet. How sad that our once mighty engineering ability has now been lost, and we are left with foreign imported unreliable crap.

I did the Swindon works tour when the dump was full of 52s. Great vid. Oh for 10 minutes with a set of spammers!
The Westerns were one of the best looking diesel locos in the history of BR.

Hi,
The Western was but, believe it or not, the Warship was cut shortly after this was filmed. And its a 27 with the cab off.
@craig90125 I missed the open day and ended up driving a gronk up and down the yard at Swansea thanks to a friendly driver!
Chilling.
The smaller locomotives like the class 25s do not have as much presence as the big class 40s for example.
@wattass7 50s were good eh?
Sad sights indeed.
😮 don't go down the con yard theres asbestos everywhere

You must have been riding on different trains to what I did back in the 70s and 80s. Reliable is not a word that could realistically be used :-)
Class 66s are probably the most reliable diesel loco this country has ever seen
grr a load of great trains almost all of these are now scrapped evan 50024 at the start of the vidio
The warship cut up out of spite, nothing more ,nothing less
25253's lifespan must have been such as a waste
very sad to see ..
Er, spanners
