I really do not have an opinion because I have not tried dating in years and I have not used dating sites in a long time. I personally do not like taking photos or looking at myself in pictures. It things are working for you and it is helping you , by all means go for it Keven. You have some great photos as well. They say a lot about you without saying anything.

I feel like being black on Grindr is a whole different experience. I’m not trying to play the victim or race card and I know this is a cliche topic but my smiling picture is currently doing terrible. I feel your pain black Andrew Garfield. I'm black myself and 57 years old. I understand why you are bitter because I am too and probably jaded since I'm old and single. I stopped participating in the apps a long time ago because constantly being overlooked and ghosted, etc is hurtful and makes you feel bad about yourself and being you. It's sad to say, but if I was white, I would be considered a catch. Regretfully, from my own experience in the gay community and the gay media, there is a hierarchy of who is considered attractive and a catch, and the reality is that black men are not near the top of the hierarchy. As your gay elder, I recommend putting all the apps behind since they are wasted energy. Also don't get down on yourself. If these gay men don't have the capacity to recognize you're a catch, it's their loss and move on. I've moved on and I'm currently enjoying a New York steak at a restaurant in Palm Springs, CA all by myself. I've decided to date myself😂
Yeah it's a very different experience for PoC on the apps. You can't fault white gays for not understanding this though. It's just not something that's in the realm of something they would have any experience dealing with. You might have more luck trying paid dating services or joining gay social in-person events like sports leagues or hobby clubs.

If you put a genuine smile it has even more impact or if you laugh as opposed to a forced smile just for the picture. And for the headless torsos, to me they're headless people, I just skip them and if one of them talks to me without showing me a face within 5 minutes, they get blocked. 🙂 I rarely use that app, people treat you like a piece of meat, it's not what it used to be, you used to be acutually able to find dates and BFs on it, not really anymore, it's became harder and harder.

I think a photo in which one is smiling generally makes one look more open, friendly, and approachable which may make more viewers of the photo feel more at ease and have more interest in messaging you. The smile, however, must look natural and genuine rather than forced or cheesy.
Also, rather than measuring the success of using a particular photo on Grindr by the quantity of messages you get, you may want to measure the success by the quality of the messages you get in terms of the messages indicating that the guy is interested in the same type of encounter that you want and has characteristics that you want. If from a particular photo you received fewer messages overall, but more messages from guys that interest you and who are looking for the same type of encounter as you, then I would say that is a successful photo.
Your smoldering moody look, your mysterious Mona Lisa look, and your friendly smiling look photos all look great. I would say that the friendly smiling look photo perhaps makes you look more inviting and approachable, so it makes sense to lead with that look and also have the photos with your other looks to show that you have a multi-faceted personality.

Getting tons of messages? what's that? As a visible minority (who's been complimented as handsome at times) I get mostly silence on Grindr.
What kind of minority?
Yeah it's true as well in my experience. Generally I've found that by posting full figure face pics showing you in your best light publicly (with friends, doing stuff, in front of land marks or art pieces) it shows off something about your personality that thus draws a certain type of person.
An example being you being into art, if you were to post pictures of yourself having fun at a favorite art gallery or in a art museum, you would in theory attract people who are also into artistic pursuits. With the kinda personality that enjoys it to go with. Pictures with a smile in general are better since it shows a degree of sincerity or authenticity... especially if it's natural.
As you said torso pics or faceless profiles are usually for people looking for s_e_x. So not doing that, stating in your profile that your looking to seriously date vs searching for casual NSA, should weed out the vast of majority of s_e _x fiends out there.
I don't think it be a good thing if everyone did it though. Especially if they weren't looking for anything long lasting and acted like a douche most of time on the apps anyway. It would lead to culture insincerity and falseness that to degree already exists... but would be much worse if everyone had friendly profile pics and acted anything but lol.
That's a great point! Someone becomes more likeable / attractive if you see them with friends (even if friends are cropped out of photo) - vs the guys where every single photo is clearly a selfie.
I dont really think it has to do anything with a smile being a special psychological trick. its just that you look good in that smiling picture. other people dont look that good smiling. but you do.

I reckon you look more masc in the photo than real life and that's probably why its popular.
In Mexico we have a term that I think describes this very well:
Someone looks “mamón”: which in a very literal way would be translated as sucker, but its meaning it’s more like asshole/arrogant.
A picture with an actual smile in someone typically handsome makes them seem more approachable.
If that same person has no full smile in their pics, that person would look _mamón_, and you won’t feel too comfortable/confident trying to approach them.

Sociopaths and psychos smile in their profiles too. By searching hook-up apps as a way to find dates you are dispensing with how we humans are really "coded". We are animals. Animals scent each other out before engaging. But the olfactory aspect is entirely dispensed with when one has relegated himself to sexual meat markets. (Nothing wrong with meat, but you said yourself you are looking for dates, not just a roll in the hay.) Thus IMHO you are on the wrong app and it will prove to largely be a waste of your time. One can also get signals and clues when meeting guys in person which you will react to either positively or negatively. Your gut instincts will alert you to red flags if you listen. Some might refer to this as "vibes", but the only vibe you are gonna get on hook-up apps is the carefully constructed one that men present in order to hook the next fish, so "vibes" are dispensed with as well. What hook-up app profiles are is people presenting their own idealized image of themselves, which may or may not prove accurate in reality. Be honest: how many times have you been shocked or appalled by a hook-up who seemed very attractive in his profile but was quite the opposite in person?
