- We're in the 1812 endgame now. The Brits burn Washington, a national anthem is inspired, and Andrew Jackson scores a garbage time touchdown in New Orleans. Let's see how the War of 1812 ended and what impacted it had on those involved.

Who do you think won the war? What topic should I do next?
Obviously America. Otherwise we’d be Britain’s bitch still, like Canada.
Neither it was kinda a tie
@@trentthehehim3936 canada is not britain's bitch.
A tie for the Americans is kinda a win and real losers are the natives.
Yeah, it's all downhill from there if it wasn't already.
I recall John Green in a crash course video saying something like "Neither Britain nor USA won the war but the natives definitely lost"
He was right then and he's still right now.
As usual.
I mean yeah they kinda did
I kinda feel the US won more. There’s so much effort to poo-poo on the country, but the US “won more” for the same reason we can acknowledge the Amerindians lost. The US gained enormous tracts of land. Jackson got like 23 million acres in the Treaty of Fort Jackson alone. The Old Northwest was pacified. The Amerindians loss was the gain of the US
6:02 Ah, the flag is still there. As well as... other things
I didn't see nothing. I was looking at the flag.
@@DrawnofHistory me too ... *me tooo*
Damn...I saw it...
Andrew Jackson may have hated a lot of things, but at least he loved his dear wife Rachel.
And duels.
you know who wlse loved his dear wife rachel? MY MOM!
Now instead of him in Captain America garb, I'm picturing him in Batman Begins, driving Katie Holmes to the batcave screaming "RACHEL"!

Jackson had 108 duels
im sobbing
poor Rachel
i think he might've also loved beating the snot out of a potential assassin with his cane too
The amount of funny memes in one vid is insane lol

Hope you can make another vid soon. love your vids, but I hate waiting. What can I say, I'm not that patient.
Just for a frame of reference. This one probably took around 150-200 hours so...

Honestly, Jackson won. Not America, just Jackson. His victory at New Orleans would propel him to the Whitehouse and, for better or worse, he'd become one of the most influential presidents in American history.
You're not wrong.
@@DrawnofHistory Thanks! Love your content btw, Mr. Terry brought me to it.

This truly was America’s dummest war
America's dumbest war so far.
Videos like this are how history should be taught in school
It's how I try to teach it, with cleaned up language of course.
Maybe a good format but the angle of attack is always anti- US/13. That part really sucks on all these "Drawn" videos. I see that stupid stuff enough from daily news casts. You know : "The US is bad, stoopid, it sucks, always aggressive and taking, blah, blah, blah"! Enough of that shit, there is NO balance.
@@theebrainfixer I was referring to the format, but I get what you're saying about the anti US stuff.
Welp this is my new favorite history channel.
Thanks, hope to have the next one out in about a month
I love the «four shadows» running joke 😂
I do feel «Admiral Cockburn» was a missed opportunity..!
But the cute and wholesome ending gag more than makes up for it!
Very entertaining! Great work, looking forward to the next one!
Me too. Now I just have to do it.
Brits intercepted Bonaparte's love letters to Josephine during his Egypt campaign. They published them in their papers to make fun of him. Perhaps they planned the same thing with the sitting US President's love letters.
Those weren't love letters those were letters where Napoleon was scolding his wife for having affairs with other men. If it was just some love letter of a husband to his wife the letters wouldn't have a "make fun about it" value to publish in the newspapers.
@@masterplokoon8803 you are right.
This war will be a source of debate for decades if not centuries to come. Nice video.
imagine never loosing a war in history -Canada
They would be a bit of a lucky rabbit's foot.
Canada was part of the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War. Canada sent soldiers and fought in the war. They were part of the losing side, which means they are not undefeated.
@@electricpizza5774 shh we do not talk about that
Canada were also in Afghanistan
@@electricpizza5774They were volunteers though if I remember. Canada themselves never actually declared war.
Hey, I mean we did at least hand a defeat to one of the battle-hardened British armies from the Napoleonic Wars at New Orleans, right? That Indiana Jones reference I liked though. Just rediscovered your channel through the algorithm after turning off my RUclips search history for quite a while...
Glad to have you back aboard
So, the strangest tale from the Battle of New Orleans that I wish was talked about was how when the Americans retrieved the body of General Pakenham, they had it pickled and returned to England in a cask of rum so he could be given a proper burial at home.
@@joshlavene622
Didn’t the French do the same thing with John Paul Jones and gave him back to the USA?
he’s often called the founder of are Navy, crazy guy.
The US naval victories probably stung the most since that's what Britain was most proud of.
Great video. I would add though that few to no people outside the US consider the war a draw. Britians aim in the war was to prevent Canada being conquered. Americas aim was to subjugate Canada. At the end of the war Canada was still under British control.
Sounds like a British victory to me.
True, US failed it's war goals pretty badly and considering how poorly defended Canada was in 1812 and with the Brits busy against France it was not very impressive.
US one big victory didn't happen until the war really was over, not counting those cities in Canada they burnt in 1813 of course but that was rather pointless and considering that the army that did that got beaten by a handful Canadians dressed up as Indians I wouldn't say that they were very effective there either.
DC actually had enough defenders to keep the British out but they just fled due to poor morale.
So yeah, US lost but it was a minor loss since they didn't loose any land even if the debacle certainly was very expensive in money and men.
Same thing with the English victory, England didn't really gain anything but they didn't really send even a fraction of what they could since they basically been in war for 20 years and had no intention of getting bogged down in another major war. If England really had sent half their military things would have ended very poorly for the Americans but it would just been another British headache.
The Native Americans were the ones who had a major loss.
I agree, even speaking as an American, there's no way to spin this war as anything but a big "L" for the US of A. At least, you'd think, I mean your logic seems 100% correct to me, namely the side that started the war and fails to achieve it's war aims is the loser and the side that prevented the initiator from achieving its aims is the winner.
However, I hear so, so many times that the Korean war was a draw for some reason, and all I will say is this, if the Korean war was somehow not a U.S./U.N. victory, then England doesn't get to claim it won the war of 1812 either. Fair is fair.
@@Magic_M_Hayashi The Korean war is a bit tough but I think the South and their allies won since the Norths objective was to take over the entire peninsula.
The problem of course is that the war officially isn't over, no armistice was ever signed, technically is there just a temporary cease fire that have lasted 70 years and I think that is what people are referring to.
But you are right, US was on the winning side there. North Korea invaded with the plans to conquer everything and South Korea is still there, arguing that US lost both war makes no logical sense.
US never really claimed it was a war at all but a "police action" and the war was pretty filled with bad decisions from both sides. The whole thing ended in a trench war that you only can see something similar during the Great war, in fact it is pretty hard to tell which is which on many photos.
Both these wars are a bit confusing, in the first Britain won by small margins, on the second the Allies won by the same small margin but in both cases the borders after the wars was close to identical to before it started but with a lot of casualties.
So both wars were pretty pointless.
1. The war continued until the treaty was ratified in Feb 1815. Ratification is very important as the signed treaty is meaningless without it. The British failed to ratify an 1815 draft treaty known as the “Treaty of Nicholls’ Outpost.” It was signed by the Red Stick Creeks and other native tribes to defend them from potential invasion (via British protection) of the United States. This treaty made the natives British subjects as they raised the Union Jack under the Florida territory in post-War of 1812. It didn't stop the United States from hunting down the Colonial Marines, Red Stick Creeks, Seminoles, and even native-allied British supporters in Florida.
2. The United States officially voted against annexation of The Canadas (i.e. "Canada" did not exist) in July 1812. The United States govermment could only agree to go to war over impressment. Impressment ended on it's own with the defeat of Napoleon, so it was a war goal that resolved itself.
3. The British instigated the war with the impressment of (even if by mistake) Americans. Impressment is just another form of kidnapping civilians.
4. The United States had control over Lake Erie and (exceedingly minimal) part of Ontario which was a factor in changing the terms from uti possidetis to status quo ante bellum. The United States exploited those "status quo ante bellum" terms in every angle.
5. The British lost all of their allies. For example:
Tecumseh’s Confederacy? Defeated.
Red Stick Creeks? Defeated.
Spanish Florida? Territory was claimed.
Federalists? Permanently discredited and some completely driven out of their occupations (notably a sheriff in Maine involved in smuggling for the British)
6. The British were no longer allowed to trade with the Natives. It forced them to deal with a (rather adverserial) foe with the United States in trade.
7. The British failed in their offensive aims. For example:
- Indian Buffer State was clearly dropped and risked the end to negotiations if this hadn't been done.
- New Ireland was totally abandoned and the Federalists whom associated with the British were fed to the wolves. The British could not financially afford to assist the few Federalists who did wish to secede.
- Avoidance of bringing up a separate article over the legality of the Louisiana Purchase. They raised the point of it being illegal in negotiations and immediately dropped it when they couldn't get what they wanted. The British even considered doing with Louisiana as to what the United States did with the Upper Canada (i.e. "incite the local citizens") with the same results. There was even territory claimed by the United States from their ally Spain.
As of reading this commentary, there was no "L" in this war for the United States. I've perceive it as a draw, but some historians have a fair case towards a victory for the United States.
Drawed against Britain and decisively destroyed the Indian Confederacy. And the Impressment issue was over. Also a victory against Spain where Mobile was conquered and set up for the fall of the rest of Florida.

@@Ugly_German_Truths In Malvern (Wustersheer) we were always amused by American tourists asking the way to "Here ford", meaning Herrifud.

We do occasionally get tornados in Washington DC. It's nothing like what they get in the Midwest but we do get a few each summer in the DMV.
Whats even sadder is that most U.S citizens only know the short version of the Star-Spangled Banner. The full version that was written goes as follows;
O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
'Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - "In God is our trust,"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Mate absolutely top top entertainment and interesting history all in one sweet package of animated fun. Brilliant channel.
Maybe you should make a few shorts of easy things to fill the gaps between your bigger great videos. It's just apparently the RUclips algorithm pays a lot of attention to the amount of videos on a channel and how often they upload. That along with the watch time are supposed to be the most important things to do to get noticed and help your amazing channel reach all the people who need to see it. By designing a quick and easy way to to make a few 2 minute videos is apparently really effective. Say quick takes on a moment olin history tied to the big video you made last or will be making. Try doing it like a podcast with a predrawn set up that you use of a character telling the story with just a few extra scenes and jokes.. 🤔 Hope you grow as big as you deserve.

Between the war of independence and the war of 1812, it's really impressive how proud some can be of having fought against someone else who was fighting with two hands tied behind their back, at the posterior of the contemptorary world. Much like bragging about the Barbary Coast, claiming European powers didn't have the "guts" to do something about the piracy. Erm, no, they just had other issues higher on their priority list. Like a war that had engulfed much of Europe but was also being fought overseas in kind of a WW 0.1
It's like when you hold your own against an older sibling that really had no interest in fighting you anyway.
When do Americans boast about the Barbery wars?
Real history is much more intersting than the pablum I was taught in high school.

As a Brit this war is never really focused on. Napoleon stole the limelight in history lessons of that period. Shame, because this is an interesting aspect of British history.
He stole nothing. He rightly deserved recognition.
This war compared to what was going on at the time was pretty insignificant. Just some dumb yanks doing dumb shit while adults were duking out in Europe.
