Also, the average term for a Roman dictator was 6 months. Famously, Cincinnatus returned his power after 13 days, being the model dictator.
To make it even weirder, Roman Emperor tends to be more fluid…as in “some bozo with an army can become one” (see Third Century Crisis and even Byzantine had peasants like Basil and Romanos becoming one).

This is one of the best overviews on Caesar I've seen. Sulla etc are far too often overlooked, and everyone keeps saying the entire Roman crisis didn't begin until the first triumvirate!
Surely you have seen Historia Civilis' episodes on Cæsar and the late Roman republic? Not a whole lot of jokes and flash, but a shitload of well researched detailed history!
The reason that soldiers tended to be more loyal to their generals wasn't because they were allowed to join while poor. It was because the Senate refused to pay beyond the bare minimum, so the onus on making sure the soldiers got more than a glorified laborers wage was on the general.

No. Knocked it out of the park with the comedy. All kids should be taught history this way, so that they remember the past, and remember to wash their balls.
I want to note that bibilus as consul also had the power to cancel senate meetings if he felt that there were "bad omens". He used this authority every time the senate was due to meet, however everyone ignored it because Julius Caesar, who was Rome's chief priest, said it would be ok. Bibilus wasnt really seen in office until he was due to give his final farewell speech, given when one's term as counsul had ended, and when he was about to speak his speech was vetoed by a tribune of the plebs so he was stripped of basically all dignity at that point.
8:46 - _"And then Caesar's beloved Cornelia died. Caesar mounted the Rostra of the Forum and gave a simple, yet profound eulogy."_ 🎵Apple bottom jeans. Boots with the fur🎵 This absolutely killed me.
For all of Ceaser's scheming and brilliance, for some reason, he held an incredibly naive belief in The Power of Friendship. He dropped the ball when he tried to turn his life into a Shonen Anime.
It reminds me of a Saying from war hammer forty k. " The emperor protects our souls, but having a loaded gun does help put one's mind at ease" If only caesar had the foresight to go armed. Maybe he would have survived. Then again they probably Paid off the pretorians to allow them to get away with it. Rome was so corrupt.
I read Suetonius just before so I was half-expecting it, nice to see that these details made it in for people in the know, without the need to elaborate on it.
For the record, the bit about Caesar and the king of Bythinia is almost certainly anti-Caesarian political propaganda. They depicted him as the submissive partner both because that's the part that was frowned upon in Rome, and also to show put across the idea that he would be submissive to foreign kings. That said, the apple bottom jeans eulogy bit is spot on and tends to be left out in most accounts. Thanks for that attention to detail!
Awww, Caesar was nice and kind to his pirate buddies. He had their throats slit when he crucified them, so instead of a long, agonizing and degrading death, it's just a degrading death.
