Mad Dogs and Glider Pilots

  • Finally another day at the seaside! Only 2 gliders with Eric and Mark in Duo Discus OL and myself in ASW20L M5 braved the conditions which were stonking for the milk run between Sidmouth and Beer Head but with the large westerly component in the wind of 240/25 kts and an increasing chance of showers we didn't venture any further east. The low winter sun made the views all that more spectacular and our adrenaline deficit has been topped up for a little while longer.
    The cliffs are 20km almost due south from the gliding club and require us to be aero-towed down there. We also pass abeam Exeter International Airport and a quick call to them with our intentions helps minimise any disruption to their inbound traffic and facilitates good relations.
    Our club's increasing foray's to our rediscovered coastal play ground are expanding our knowledge of workable conditions and the strip at Farway Common gives a very safe landing option if we can't get high enough to make it back to the club.

    Guardate questo meraviglioso video, Matt è riuscito benissimo a trasferire l'emozione di volo ai suoi fan, ancora non riesco a trattenermi e piango quando guardo i suoi bellissimi video, meticolosamente selezionati per condividere la sua gioia durante il volo con l'aliante e non riesco a credere a questa amara realtà che la sua vita è finita. Riposa in pace Balleka.

    If I remember well my towing days the glider landing gear is out during the tow to create some drag and thus help to tighten the tow rope. (Gliders are damn slippy compared to a towing aircraft) Notice how he's retracting the landing gear as soon as he releases himself from the tow line.

    • @venturiniandrea
      @venturiniandrea 3 года назад

      as a tow pilot' advice: it's also a good practice not to retract it while towing since if something goes wrong (and things always go wrong in the wrong moment....) you need to focus on landing not fiddling with an extra leverage...

    We had talk from Paraglider to Paraglider an the Modelplanes had flewn around us and maked Looping with us in the Middle.
    To fy in this laminar Lift is great!
    From Minute to Minute we fly crazier.
    And in the end of the Day, we saw a great sunset from above and we know we would remember this Great day many times..

    Hi Balleka..Thoroughly enjoyed your clip.! Am a Hang Glider pilot in NE Oz..and blessed here with flying all year round. But in winter, the cloudbase is lower and thermals weaker, but on non thermic days head for the ridge soaring sites.! Understood that nose down attitude, staying low powering through the lift! Geez..it looked rough on the way back down wind, and know the need when rain squall on the way! Was disappointed not to have seen your landing! Can you pl name song, wld like to use too.

    Awesome vid and the performance of the glider , although you had a tow down to the coast you managed to get back after flying lower than the cliffs , its nov and the sky is closing in ! was it a slight tail wind that helped and how did u get so much height from the cliff for the return beats me , although iam from a piss poor paragliding glide ratio set those sailplanes rock .
