Another bowl that I love. This is a beauty! The result is like ancient digged-up, burnt Pompie pottery artifacts, but this one is modern wood. 🤗 Your craft is a treasure. And it's a pleasure watching the process until the end. I really enjoy your woodturning videos. Thank you! 👍🏻🔥😊🇺🇸
What a Beautiful piece, Jim! I Love it! I can't say I care very much for the color of the soap stone on the outside of the bowl. It almost looks like cement, BUT on the inside it looks completely different and is absolutely FLAWLESS! I KNOW I'm 3 years late on this one, but I thought I'd show some love!
Wow, Jim! The inserts are so striking! I'm looking forward to viewing your inlay series. I really appreciate how creative you are. This is a gorgeous piece! Bravo, dude. Bravo!
This is a gorgeous piece. I'm from Texas so love the Southwestern look. It's a piece I'd be proud to display in my home. I've never seen soapstone used as an inlay. I've only seen it carved. It's very pretty! Lots of work! Glad you stuck it out to the lovely end! 🤗
This piece of wood has lots of character and lovely grain. I really like the soapstone inlay fabulous bowl, love the finish it's great. Thanks for an awesome video Jim from Amanda xx
From a scary piece of wood to an awesome piece of art! Your work and creativity is absolutely amazing. The Burl wood is perfect for the Designer Epoxy; any of their colors turns this wood into a masterpiece! Great job. Bravo!
I am just watching this video 3 1/2 years later. Very interesting to see the differences between then and now. I didn’t realize soapstone would shine so pretty once it was coated with finish. Very pretty bowl.
I mentioned that I really was not fond of the soapstone and copper wire inly, But this application is so well suited for the bowl. I think it is Beautiful!
This is a great inlay maple burl. Would have made a great resin burl, but this is before your resin faze. Love the piece, another fine work of art sir. I always love the natural edge pieces. Thanks for the post of all your hard work, both in front of and behind the camera.🌿 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Your inlays are amazing! Really glad you do them. Other people can do their projects differently. If there's a market for it, why not? That natural edge is really interesting and looks super cool.
Really great bowl!!! I would like to accomplish the finish that you have. I just recently found your channel and must tell you that I can't wait for more. Keep them coming. I love the wood that you have at your disposal. I have 46 acres of woodlands full of hardwood species but it is in Tennessee and I'm now living in Florida. Difficult to go on wood hunting trip but my oldest son is going to help out with that hopefully this winter/fall. The hot melt glue set up was a fantastic idea. Also like the use of an old reefer to act as a drying oven. I'm looking for one to do the same. Thanks for sharing your videos.
Sprague Woodturning I’d like to ask u a question if u don’t mind... I love ur work, particularly with the inlays. They add so much texture & color to ur pieces. I notice that all of ur pieces that I’ve seen are really thick & chunky; do u make any finer or slimmer bowls with inlays?
I don’t make thin inlayed bowls because they need the thickness to hold the inlay. The thinner it gets the less functional it becomes. I like people to use my turnings. Functional art.
Nice job I never thought of using soapstone to fill gaps. Thanks for the idea I really appreciate it. Can you use any other stone? The more of your videos I watch the better I like your work and the more stuff I learn and tricks of the trade thank you very much. I’ve been a wood turner for years myself, but you can always learn something.
I’ve inlayed alabaster, different types of soapstone, turquoise, coffee, green calcite and apatite to name a few. It should be 3 or less on the hardness scale. Thanks
Hello Jim. I stumbled upon your woodturning videos; and, I am quite addicted to them. I was wondering if there is a catalog of your entire work so that I can make decision on purchases. Thank you for bringing your beautiful artwork to RUclips for our enjoyment. I look forward to your future videos.
I don’t have a catalog, send a email to spraguewoodturning@hotmail.com and I can send you some pictures of my current work or add you to a waiting list, thanks 🙏
Exceptional work as always!! Beautiful bowl!! I have not done much inlay. I usually use the sawdust from sanding the piece to fill the holes and defects. After seeing your work, I plan to do some inlay in the future. I did do some inlay a few years ago using colored sand, Came out really nice. Have you ever done any inlay using colored sand? You can get it on Amazon. Happy Turning!! Mike LeMoine
Should be able to do a google search to come up with some in your area, there is also a link in the description where you can get alabaster as well in the Toronto area.
It turned out beautiful. Do you think the soapstone would work ok mixed in epoxy? I have some butterfly keys I need to do to stop some cracks in a board and I think the soap stone would look very nice but I need the epoxy for strength... Thanks for your time. Ron
It might work, I’m not sure that the epoxy is strong enough to over come the forces of wood movement tho. I guess you’ll never know unless you try it. Jim.

Rex B I will be doing a video on making a upright freezer kiln when I can get my hands on a old one, stay tuned. I have lots of info on my Instagram account tho. I’ve been turning for over 20 years and people get to know your looking for burls, so they just seem to show up. It also helps to be surrounded by hardwood forest as well. The CA will certainly stain wood, in this case, I’ve pretty much covered the entire piece which is all end grain, so it all stained the same. Beautiful piece. I'm eager to try some inlay. I've had good results using a Sand-O-Flex on edges like that. Have a blessed day.
Thanks 🙏
Beautiful. You've inspired me to order some soapstone and have a go myself!
Great! Jim
Another spectacular bowl, you and your work are an inspiration...I hope in time to achieve your skill set!!!

I did use it on one occasion but it’s pretty much impossible to sand back when used as a inlay. So I never used it again. Thanks

Very informative. I cant wait to try inlay work!
Great!

So many inlays so little time, lol. Thanks 🙏🏻

I’m always in production and can make something for you. spraguewoodturning@gmail.com thanks
Crazy cool
Awesome, thanks 😊
The inside seems to have a cat face on it. And on the outside one of the areas you used soapstone on was a shape of a moose moving away. Fun bowl
Thanks Judith! I see things in bowls all the time, Jim.
The inside of this reminds me of a lions mane for some reason - it's a beauty
Thank you so much!
I love this idea! Your link for soapstone is a block. What is your procedure for crushing it in to powder form? Thanks and keep these videos coming!
If you watch my Alien Wall Hanging video it’s all explained well there, thanks.
Thank you. Now I'm looking for white alabaster. Can't seem to find it? I love your procedure!

They certainly have their advantages, thanks. Jim.
Maybe a stupid question but why was the burl in the refrigerator? Love the videos btw. Inspiring. Can’t wait to get going myself. 🙃
The fridge is converted to a kiln. There’s a couple of videos on my channel showing how to make it. Thanks 🙏🏻

Ever use cactus juice to stabilize wood? The juice has worked for me
Yes I have and with no issues, Jim.
Do you have to support the banjo on the back of the lathe to prevent tool bounce?
No, not as a general rule, Jim.
How long do wait after spraying the CA accelerator before you turn again? I’ve found with aerosol accelerators it just cures the surface but not what penetrated into the wood fibers.
That’s correct, if it’s a thick inlay, I usually wait overnight, after that it’s usually not a issue to fill and wait 10 mins or so before tooling it again, Jim
Very nice work. You really seem to like to get the fine details right. You use a lot of CA glue! Do you buy it in bulk, and if so may I ask what your source is?
