O tema dessa música é reconhecido por sua beleza incomum. É um 'adagio sostenuto' em Mi Maior bastante romântico com passagens de natureza nostálgica, em especial nos diálogos do piano com o oboé, que apresenta o tema em si. Mais ao final, esses diálogos se dão com as cordas.
Em 1975, um cantor americano, Eric Carmen, lançou uma música, 'All By Myself', que se tornou um grande sucesso. Eric plagiou claramente o tema de Rachmaninov. No Spotify, os créditos da música 'All By Myself' são apenas dedicados a Eric Carmen.

"Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (em russo: Сергей Васильевич Рахманинов, Semyonovo, 1 de abril de 1873 - Beverly Hills, 28 de março de 1943) foi um compositor, pianista e maestro russo, um dos últimos grandes expoentes do estilo Romântico na música erudita ocidental. "Sergei Rachmaninoff" foi como o próprio compositor gravou o seu nome quando viveu no ocidente, durante a última metade de sua vida. Entretanto, transliterações alternativas de seu nome incluem Sergey ou Sergej, e Rachmaninov, Rachmaninow, Rakhmaninov ou Rakhmaninoff.
Rachmaninoff é tido como um dos pianistas mais influentes do século XX. Seus trejeitos técnicos e rítmicos são excelentes, e suas mãos largas eram capazes de cobrir um intervalo de uma 13ª no teclado (um palmo esticado de cerca de 30 centímetros). Especula-se se ele era ou não portador da Síndrome de Marfan, já que se pode dizer que o tamanho de suas mãos correspondia à sua estatura, algo entre 1,91 e 1,98 m. "The Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, is a concerto for piano and orchestra composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff between June 1900 and April 1901. The piece established his fame as a concerto composer and is one of his most enduringly popular pieces.
After the disastrous 1897 premiere of his First Symphony, Rachmaninoff suffered a psychological breakdown and depression that prevented composition for three years. In 1899, he was supposed to perform the Second Piano Concerto in London, which he had not composed yet, and instead made a successful conducting debut. The success led to an invitation to return next year with his First Piano Concerto; however, he promised to reappear with a newer and better one. After an unsuccessful meeting with Leo Tolstoy meant to revoke his writer's block, relatives decided to introduce Rachmaninoff to the neurologist Nikolai Dahl, whom he visited daily from January to April 1900. Rachmaninoff dedicated the concerto to Dahl for successfully treating him by restoring his health and confidence in composition.
From the summer to the autumn of 1900, he worked on the second and third movements of the concerto, with the first movement causing him difficulties. Both movements of the unfinished concerto were first performed with him as soloist and his cousin Alexander Siloti conducting on 15 December [O.S. 2 December] 1900. The first movement was finished in 1901 and the complete work had an astoundingly successful premiere on 9 November [O.S. 27 October] 1901, again with the same duo. Gutheil published the concerto the same year".

We had the pleasure of hosting Alim in July when he headlined the Paxton Music Festival with stunning performances of Schubert Impromtus, Debussy Images and all 12 Chopin Etudes. Incredible talent and a lovely young man - it was a privilege to hear him practicing for the concert on my ancient Bluthner Gand piano!!

Mr Beisembayev allows “Rachmaninov to BE Rachmaninov.” By that I mean honoring the 2 against 3 motif… no egregious time stretching for “emotional effect”… as if the composer needs more than he has given us.” This is a sign of mature musicianship. Wonderful playing. Cannot wait to hear the outer movements.
