    I don't understand why this version has so little views... It is by very far the best interpretation I've heard, because it is rather slow, and honours Rach's writing, how much would I've paid to be there in the concert hall to hear this being played...

    It is said that it takes a great interpreter to fully realize a great composer's masterwork. That is certainly the case here. Lugansky seems to have an inside track to understanding Rachmaninoff's genius. The slower tempi than Rachmaninoff's own recording of his masterpiece serve to expose the pure poetry buried in the score. I have heard this concerto performed countless times, but never with the interpretive mastery Lugansky gives it. He is a great pianist in every sense of the word.

    • @peterectasy2957

Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt lyrisch. Der intelligente Maestro dirigiert das ausgezeichnete Orchester im relativ langsamen Tempo und mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Luganksy is really amongst the greatest of pianists. Superb technique, deep musical understanding. I particularly admire his "no-nonsense" approach (honest if you like) and he is not afraid to "pound" the piano (in a very musical way, of course) when the full orchestra is playing. I believe Rachmaninov's music demands this. Just magnificent. Also wonderful communication between conducter and pianist particularly in those connecting sections where the tempo varies.

  • @TomBarrister
    @TomBarrister 4 года назад +27

    The Encore is an arrangement by Rachmaninoff of Tchaikovsky's Romance, Opus 16, no. 1, "Cradle Song," one of six romances Tchaikovsky wrote for that opus. Tchaikovsky originally wrote these in 1872, as songs for soprano and piano; he later wrote arrangements of 1, 4, and 5 for solo piano. Tchaikovsky wrote two versions of the Cradle Song for solo piano, one in A flat minor and the other in the technically-easier A minor. Tchaikovsky's protege and manager, Paul (Pavel) Pabst, corrected some publishing errors in the Cradle Song, and his arrangement is the one in publication today.
    In 1941 Rachmaninoff wrote his own arrangement of this work, shortly after he revised his 4th Concerto. It is the last-known work that he penned, and it's one of the last recordings he made.
    This work is in the repertoire of most concert pianists, with those who use Pabst's version saying that Rachmaninoff's version sounds more like Rachmaninoff than it does Tchaikovsky. The performers have a valid point, but that isn't necessarilly a bad thing. Tchaikovsky never intended the Romances to be works for solo piano and only wrote piano arrangements at the behest of his publisher. The arrangment of Cradle Song was so contrived and hacked by publishers that Pabst felt obligated to write an additional version of it. Rachmaninoff wrote his version specifically for piano, and to bring out the melodic capabilities of the instrument. It is Rachmaninoff's arrangment that's used most often by perfomers, and it was the one I played when I performed.

    At its 1897 premiere, Rachmaninoff's first symphony, though now considered a significant achievement, was derided by contemporary critics.[5] Compounded by problems in his personal life, Rachmaninoff fell into a depression that lasted for several years. His second piano concerto confirmed his recovery from clinical depression and writer's block, cured by courses of hypnotherapy and psychotherapy and helped by support from his family and friends. The concerto was dedicated to Nikolai Dahl, the physician who had done much to restore Rachmaninoff's self-confidence.[5]

    Emmanuel Krivine (born 7 May 1947, Grenoble) is a French conductor.
    The son of a Polish mother and a Russian father, Krivine studied the violin as a youth. He was a winner of the Premier Prix at the Paris Conservatoire, at age 16.[1] He later studied at the Queen Elisabeth School in Brussels. He stopped playing the violin after a car accident in 1981.[1]
    Inspired by a meeting with Karl Böhm, Krivine began to develop an interest in conducting. He was principal guest conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France from 1976 to 1983. From 1987 to 2000, he was music director of the Orchestre National de Lyon. He has also served as music director of the Orchestre Français des Jeunes for 11 years.
    In 2004, Krivine established the orchestra La Chambre Philharmonique. In 2006, he became music director of the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra (OPL), with an initial contract of 3 years, after becoming the orchestra's principal guest conductor in 2002.[2] In May 2009, Krivine extended his contract with the orchestra through the 2014-2015 season.[3] He concluded his tenure as the OPL's music director at the end of the 2014-2015 season.[4][5] In 2013, he became principal guest conductor of the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra, with a contract through the 2015-2016 season. In May 2014, Krivine was named the next principal guest conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, effective September 2015, for an initial period of 4 years.[6][1]
    In June 2016, the Orchestre National de France (ONF) announced the appointment of Krivine as its next music director, effective with the 2017-2018 season, with an initial contract of 3 years. He held the title of ONF music director-designate (directeur musical désigné) for the 2016-2017 season.[7] In November 2019, the ONF announced the scheduled conclusion of his ONF tenure at the close of the 2020-2021 season.[8] In May 2020, Krivine resigned from his ONF post with immediate effect, one year ahead of his originally scheduled departure.[9]
    Krivine has conducted recordings for the Deutsche Grammophon, Warner Classics,[10] Timpani, and Naive[11] labels.

    38:17 Lugansky or the story of a musician that offers an "encore" which is more badass than the whole concert program !

      @@aidan4624 that's a transcription of a song made in a very uncommon musical key with polyrythm the whole piece. It's a real headache to learn it but Lugansky plays it as if he was simply daydreaming on his couch. This pianist is an undeniable master. We could even say that just the way he finishes the last note on his piano in a breathing murmur raised him to Hall of Fame.

    • @aidan4624
      @aidan4624 2 года назад

      @@Vetrarbreytin A Flat Minor isn’t really that uncommon. It’s just usually written as G Sharp Minor. Neither are polyrhythms. Just because it’s difficult to play doesn’t mean it’s a great piece of music. It’s pretty ambitious to say that the transcription, as great as it is, is more “badass” than a 40 minute long, near perfect performance of one of the most influential and beloved pieces of western music ever written. The piece remains one of the biggest landmarks in Romanticism for good reason.

    • @aidan4624
      @aidan4624 2 года назад

      @@Vetrarbreytin Also it’s not like the concerto is simple, it’s surprisingly complicated. It’s riddled with really unique harmony and profound depth. It’s really quite incredible how many different levels you can appreciate the concerto from. Whether you’re someone who doesn’t know what a chord is or you’re a theory teacher at Juilliard, there is something in the piece for you.

      @@aidan4624 one can't deny what is factual : A flat minor is amongst the less used keys used in classical music. The whole right hand is polyrythmic with the left hand. The only thing that you can contradict is my opinion about the fact it's the greatest piece of the program and i just wanna say "Ok." to that. That's what you think. And since you say it's not that difficult, I'm opened to any recording from you and would be delighted to listen to it. Be my guest :)
      Sometimes, it's good to just stick to opinions. Cheers.
      Ps : oh and g sharp minor has nothing to do with a flat minor. Two universe so what's the point...
