    My biggest downside of the film was that I couldn't hear about half the dialogue, so I was clueless to what was going on. Even the big finale sequence, I didn't quite know why it was happening. I never even caught the main character's name.
    How much of that was down to poor acoustics in the individual cinema screen, and how much is down to the mixing, I'm not entirely sure. I'll definitely watch it again at some point, albeit with the subtitles on.

    There's something to be said for watching a trailer *once* versus watching it several times. I watched it one time, said "Okay I'd like to see that," never saw it again. No in depth overview, no deep dive examination in an attempt to guess Nolan's "master plan," I couldn't even describe it to anyone today other than, "Some things happen in reverse, and look cool." You do a great service, suffering through over exposure for our benefit.

  • @SniffyTugBoat

    Yeah, after the reveal trailer (that really just has "inverted", the Mumbai tower f l i n g and stuff going backwards) I thought I'll wanna see this and avoided the other trailers. Which I'm grateful for.
    I'm curious what you thought about sound mixing, because that felt very odd, and it felt like it was hiding dialogue almost deliberately so audiences would just shrug and go along with the story. Like "I didn't catch what he said, so I guess I'll just watch and see what happens"

    Please do a spoiler discussion because I think there's a lot to chew on, particularly the implications of the ending.
    And I'd say I had a similar reaction to you, I think where Inception has the character arc of Cobb dealing with his grief and to an extent Fisher's emotional dynamic with his late father, Tenet sort of doesn't. It attempts to for sure, and I won't get into specifics, but it does not land the same way. I do think though that this is the best action Nolan has directed, that's for sure. The fight choreography, in particular, is fantastic, as is Ludwig's score that really never lets up.
    I'd definitely love if Nolan did a sequel because the hints at the wider world of the film are quite interesting.

    I would say it is his most complex. The narrative itself isn’t, but how the pieces come together when you start to question how did Neil (Robert Patterson) get to the time where he meets The Protagonist for the first time on screen?
    Along with many others, you’ll need a timeline to figure out which version of a character is where and how they got from A-B.

    • @Oveyz
      @Oveyz 3 года назад +1

      Yes, I've been trying to justify Neal being reversed in the Opera and yet somehow being... you know who in the last "room", and since the film tells you that "the technology hasn't been invented yet" and then blithely shows you that it has, but is entirely controlled by Sator up until a point, you wonder just how Neil got forward in time in order to go and do that last thing. Turnstiles aren't even meant to exist then, right? Like cripers it makes zero sense. Not to mention the bad guy's motivation were cheesy as shit, none of the character had backstory or depth, and the film didn't even try to pass the Bechdel test. Sad days.

  • @HumGumHum

    I had trouble hearing most of the dialogue, so being able to actually process what is being said is pretty much impossible.
    We don't care about the main character because he never really fails. We know he is going to pull through whatever troubles come his way. We care so little about him that they didn't even bother naming him.

    this summed it up perfectly for me. so often i knew (or half knew) what the grander stakes were but i just didn't care enough about the characters. i never got behind john david washington and elizabeth debicki. so often i found myself thinking 'i don't know what's going on' and 'i'm so confused' and having to remind myself to just enjoy the spectacle, but as you said, if the spectacle has no weight to it, then it's not going to be as experiential. i almost felt guilty for not coming out of the cinema raving about it cause it's the-new-chris-nolan-film™ but i was a little disappointed. definitely feel like i need to see it again to appreciate it more. absolutely loved robert pattinson's character though -- oddly i trusted him the most the whole way through, and loved the mischievous mystery he had about him.

    • @alicetarplee1119
      @alicetarplee1119 3 года назад

      Caitlin Andrews i know what you mean! and agree that it was too loud to the point where i couldn’t hear the dialogue at times (which didn’t help the general confusion). completely agree about the female characters - a consistent flaw in nolan’s movies. debicki was supposed to be this complex, contradictory female character but in the end it all boiled down to the fact that she was a mother. ostensibly she did everything for her son but it seemed to me she did a lot for herself and her own freedom - not a problem, an interesting character trait if she’s trying to justify her actions by her love for her son, but this idea is not explored enough for me to be sure it’s deliberate. not sure where i stand on that and would like to see it again to watch that dichotomy more closely, but i still think nolan needs to expand his understanding of female characters and what they can achieve in film

    • @alicetarplee1119

    No Spoilers comment: I have two or three things i didnt like but loved it overall. I agree on pacing, i think the first 20 minutes or so felt a bit all over the place, and this first opening half hour was probably hardest to make sense of some plot points. Audio wise, not sure if it was my cinema but it was overwhelmingly loud to the point I couldnt understand any dialogue in the Opera House at the start whilst characters had masks on. Loved the fact the action set pieces were done for real, and the overall concept was brilliant. Happy with how it ended but on reflection I do agree with your point about the film feeling like it was in a rush. Still a long film though but very enjoyable.

    I thought of the Protagonists' character as very much like Clint Eastwood's Man with no name. He comes into the picture where there's a problem and it's the character's around him that get more backstory as it's how he sees them. Pretty much the same thoughts here. My biggest criticism wasn't even with the film per se, more the cinema I watched it in. Incredibly bass-boosted and the music/SFX often trumped the dialogue which made understanding what they were saying especially difficult when they were wearing masks or talking through a walkie-talkie (sailing scene, opera scene, etc.).

    Agreed; I'm usually a fan of Nolan's "one and done" style to his films, but I think a sequel to Tenet would be perfect! It could slow down and breathe, and spend more time working on the characters without the burden of having to explain the high concepts!
    Also yeah what was the point of the sailing scene!? You know it's bad, whenever during the first major scene between the protagonist and antagonist, and the audience (or at least I) spend 90% of the time trying to work out *if* that boat was real, and the mechanics of how it flew/sailed, and the other 10% not understanding the dialogue...

      @boristerbeek319 3 года назад +1

      To answer your implicit question about whether the sailing scene was real: it's actually possible for a catamaran to lift up above the water as in the movie, as long as it goes fast enough :)

    I'd really like a miniseries (maybe 3 or 4 episodes) of a couple of characters within this universe having their own adventures and using the inversion technique but with john david washington's character as the mastermind orchestrating it all

    Okay I rewatched your video after finally seing the movie yesterday night and wow yes I agree with you on everything.
    The action sequences were AMAZING and definitely worth waiting going to the cinema for, but other than that I agree on the lack of emotional connection with the story and the characters. Also, my brain kinda left the chat during the double room scene so after that I wasn't really following the story lol I feel like I should re-watch it to understand it a little bit better but at the same time I kinda don't want to?? idk
    And yes please I'd love a spoiler discussion from you!!

    My stance on trailers is: Watch the first teaser and first trailer. Twice each and then not again, until I've seen the movie. Trailers and speculation and hype is a part of movies now and I love it. That way I'm engaged with a movie for half a year and not just an evening. But also this way I get to forget the trailer by the time the movie comes out.
    Worked really well with Tenet. I had theories, I was hyped, I was right and wrong about things.
    I thought about the theory the movie might be a palindrome a lot and loved that idea.
    But by the time I watched it, I did not remember the plane crash from the trailer.

    • @stvltiloqvent
      @stvltiloqvent 3 года назад

      I think Jack was right on the money with that one actually. This film *was* a palindrome, and as soon as [SPOILERS] they went into the time travel machine, that's where the mirroring began. I literally thought to myself in the cinema that the palindrome theory was right 😂

  • @N93000

    I think this could work well as a TV series combined with a videogame as a combined product like Qauntum Break. Your main protagonist has to stop the antagonist through uses of time travel with different gameplay mechanics, the antagonist has to make the choices which affect the episodes.

    I'm really happy to see this review! I heard lots of people who adored this movie and found no flaws at all, but when I watched it I felt so overwhelmed by the pace and all the information in the first half that I couldn't really enjoy it. It felt like a lot of scenes were cut and the result to me was a strange vibe with very abrupt transitions. The second half was a lot better for me and there were some super impressive scenes, but I was still a little let down by how superficial the characters and motivations felt compared to the time concept itself. The thing is that I wouldn't call this a bad movie and the way it looks is amazing, plus I think the idea is great and fun to play around with, but I wished that Christopher Nolan had either spent more time on character & motivations, or been allowed to make a longer movie. Still happy to see a movie in real life again and to see people get excited about cinema, but also a little sad that I didn't feel wowed myself.

    I completely agree with everything you've said, the visuals were utterly stunning but yes, a lot of unneeded drawn-out stuff mixed with very complex stuff which was completely glossed over. This is definitely a film you need to watch a few times to really see what Nolan was trying to go for.

    Had to watch Tenet twice, once on the 22nd and again a week later. It truly is like a whole new movie once you have the perspective of seeing it once. I felt like I was watching the first time from the Protagonist's perspective and the second time from Neil's, as each time I had the amount of information as the respective characters. Even afterwards I was figuring out extra details. I love a BIG cinema event and this was amazing to see.
    It definitely feels a bit clunky at points and spectacle for spectacle's sake but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Ultimately I thought Tenet was great and was super happy we got an advanced screening in Australia for it! I found the first act really disjointed, weirdly edited and extremely rushed though, just like you said. Also the story is mostly a search for a Mcguffin so in the parts where I missed dialogue or plot points, it was eventually easy to sum up what they were doing (Though I would have preferred to be able to keep track). But yeah, still think it's great and pumped to see it again!

  • @Baxtt001
    @Baxtt001 3 года назад +1

    Pretty much spot on I think. Whilst I think it was very complex I think if you do miss one line through slightly difficult to hear audio it can make it very difficult to follow, especially in the first half. It does pay off at the end but it felt slightly rushed and lacked something that inception and interstellar have where it doesn't quite bring it to a round finish
