This was a helpful video, thanks. I repaired my windshield yesterday and wanted to add a couple of things. 1. When adding the drops make sure they go down into the lower part of the reservoir, it's more effective that way. 2. When scraping, you don't have to be that careful, just have the razor at 90 degrees to the windshield and go at it. The excess material will all flake off quickly.
Great result. I didn't even know there was a DIY Kit. I've had a chip on my XR8 windscreen for about 7 yrs, looks like I have a wkend project coming up LOL
Used this on my car, worked a treat, 2-3 years now still going strong, tried it on my wife's car, made the crack worse.. 🤷🏻♂️ Advice: don't screw down too far.
Great tip there. I've been using Rainx glass water repellant for many years, polish it into your screen and buff it off for that awesome water beading effect that requires no wipers at all. The heavier the rain the better, especially at night.
Awesome I'd been tossing up paying someone or getting one of these kits... definitely getting a kit! BTW did anyone else notice the licence plate change?!
Thanks for sharing. I've got chip just a tad bigger than yours that's been there for a couple of years. I've seen this kit but wasn't sure how it worked (not expecting perfection). Might give it a go just to make it less noticeable. Here in Texas (US) we have so many things that fall off vehicles as well as other road debris that you're guaranteed to have to repair or replace a windscreen/windshield at least once (usually more than once in reality).
Haha, whattya know huh? Yea, good product! Get on it quick, the longer you leave the chip in the screen the higher the chance of contaminants getting in there. It's easy, good luck!
thanks for the good video , i was just told $180 to $200 aud to get repair from a shop in perth, im going to supercheap auto n buying this rain x today after seeing this great video thanks man
Thanks where thanks are due. So many thanks, very instructive and gives me confidence that I can get this stuff to work. Although since I live in blighty, it's mid Winter and the sky's are grey I'll be using a twenty watt UV lamp instead of the Sun for 5 minutes odd and will leave the curing strips on with tape covering for a bit longer than otherwise. Say 6 months until the Sun comes out. Mike
@@MotoringBoxTV WOW How very kind and considerate of you to get back to me, and so promptly. Long before I had an opportunity to really mess things up. Like so many people I'm a novice at this DIY stuff on cars and just wasn't sure about the time required. Now I have the advice I need. Thank you very very much. Mike Without wanting to push my luck any thoughts on how far away the UV lamp should be from the resin?
I don't think it's the heat that sets the resin, just UV light. So I would put it maybe 30cm / 1ft away. Even if it is cloudy you could still leave the car outside as it may still cure slowly over an extended period of time. The good thing is you can always have a second attempt if the first one doesn't go so well!
It's probably the most gentle way of scraping off the excess resin, plus it means you'll be scraping it off perfectly in line with the profile of the windscreen. On an angle should also be ok, but you run the risk of it digging into the resin more and possibly removing too much. I found that angled worked best right at the end.
45 degrees and turn the blade 30 degrees to your intended direction of cut . Think of a snow plough rather than a road scraper . The Permatex kit is so much better than this product .
We ignored our chip on the wife's windscreen, not believing the hype. Hot summer in Perth probably contributed to the chip becoming a crack about 6 inches either side of the original chip! So we had no choice other than to get a new windscreen, $295 ay Wayne's winscreens in Mandurah! Because it is illegal to drive a vehicle with what was by now, a cracked windscreen!Drove home in my car, stopping off at Lakelands for a m8lkshake and get6ing out of my Hilux ute, I noticed a tiny chip at the bottom in the middle of my own windscreen! So here I am, seeing how I might be able to do it myself. Preferably before it becomes a crack! Much more to repair.
Would love to see a review of a hybrid ceramix spray on wax, meguiars and turtle wax both have similar pricing. Having used the Meguiars hybrid ceramic wax for 6 months now I can say it is amazing.
Bloody Queenslanders! Think they know everything.... this one does :) thanks m8... ps.. watch out for drips out of the filler bottle spilling on car if a little clumsy or in a hurry. you'll have to clean off later and it cures very quickly on bonnet. pressure for the initial screw down thingy was (for me) just until the frame started to rise from the windscreen. any tape residue you may have used is easily removed with meths. that's mentholated spirits, not the other kind. subscribed as a thank you for a great vid
Not that I want to sound like “That Guy”... but I’ve got two words: Windscreen Coverage. Also sorts out the last decade of sandblasting you may or may not have and is one of those hidden gems in improving the driving experience. Rain-X the new ‘screen and you’re set to go.

I'll have to try this, found a chip on my car that I never saw till I put in my dash cam. It's probably smaller than yours, behind the mirror so never saw it. Pretty sure it was there when I bought the car ~5yrs ago
Well the screen has been replaced at least once, its label doesn't match the other windows. Plus the sheer amount of huge stone chips on the front of the car (also there when I bought it), it could be worse.
I believe it's the UV rather than the heat which cures it, so I'd give it a try. Just choose a day where you can leave the car in the sun as long as possible, just to be safe.
Probably, but it would depend on the damage and how well you filled it. Mine was pretty much sealed from the outside, so I guess the resin wasn't quite able to make it's way all the way into the deepest parts of the chip.
I doubt it'll work on the crack that goes 2/3 up the windscreen of company vehicle haha. A shame we have to wait 2 weeks for a new windscreen to be ordered, damn you Subaru's Eyesight system.
Hey you could have tried it, I reckon the 30cm figure is probably to do with how much resin they give you. Perhaps the strength of the screen becomes a bit compromised when you're talking cracks that long.
You sure? If so they can be purchased easily enough, or you can use one of those utility knives with the snap off blades. Either way gloves are a good idea and handle with care.
