Can you use the kit without the resin holder (in the same way as the final stage of your repair) to make a small patch of half a dozen slightly distracting small chips (maybe 1 to 2 mm) less evident using individual drops of resin.

Yes absolutely, if the chip isn't too deep and all lose debris has been removed you'll be fine 👍🏻
