My grandparents were ranchers in the 20s and 30s. In their photos out in the corrals and such they're wearing fedora style hats. Pretty much identical to Indiana Jones. In fact, they all looked almost exactly like Indiana Jones in what they wore.
Shorter brimmed hats like the Fedora were very common in the Old West, as well.
My hat was homemade in a barn in the early eighties the man that it belonged to was shot in the head and the hat still has the holes front and back I wear it now. Looks better on me anyhow.
Did you just admit to murder one over a hat? 😜
Wait a min...
@uncle reeler you got a point there! 😁
(bill williamson voice)
you should never wear another mans hat!
Isn’t that bad luck?
Yep...bought a Resistol cattleman at Goodwill for $20. Brim was shaped like a taco salad bowl, but a little steam had it lookin’ new in no time.. great little video.
I'm not a cowboy nor do I do cowboy stuff but sometimes on those hot summer days here in a midwest city I wear a western cowboy style hat with sportswear and gym shoes and I get so many compliments
Good!
Your video gave me the idea to get old hats from people then reshape them. I got one that was dirty, sweat stained, and the sides went straight up. I put it under warm water and reshape it into a calvary style with a flat brim. I added a blue cord to make it look like my character is a former infantry soldier not that nasty yellow cord you see representing the calvary.
Cool! Way to go.
Got my first Stetson when I was 17. Had it cleaned and blocked and the brim trimmed down some after about 20 years. Finally had to retire it after about 35 years. They are great hats. I got a $250 Stetson for $25 when a store was going out of business, it had a small stain on it. Don’t wear a hat much any more. Riding a wheelchair kinda kills the feeling.
They are great hats. Hope you get to don yours again.
Is it just me or is anyone else curious about the story behind the T. rex
Look at the link in the description field named "Ghostriders Channel Q & A Video"
T. Rex want hats on a budget too
A little thin on low budget with Tractor Supply, "Wally-world", etc.: what not to waste even low bucks on. But a fun video anyway. Now I gotta to find someone to make a "herdin' cats" t-shirt...
Great video I picked up a new west by Bailey from an antique store just like brand new
Oh cool!
@@ArizonaGhostriders have you ever heard of the thoroughbred hat company
I never have luck at flea markets and thrift stores. I have a size eight head, so it’s a miracle to find my size in a retailer, let alone a second hand market. :/
Yeah, that would get tricky. You are likely going to have to do a custom deal.
My hat band is some sort of black cord that I found and wrapped around my hat
So is mine, if you look. LIke a thin ribbon.
It's awesome that you can make a band out of almost anything
I still have my first and only black johnny cash style cowboy hat from 1986! It was too big for my head so I never wore it. I also have my cowboy boots from 1987 that cost $125 at that time! Funny thing is, I live in New Jersey, so I stuck out like a sore thumb😝
Yeah, I hear ya. I bought boots in NYC when I lived there. I had to knock the dust off of them on the sales shelf.
One of my neighbours is a Country & Western musician. Now I'm not knocking that, by all accounts he's very good, has played all around the world & made a lot of money out of it. We quite often see him stomping around in a black stetson, tassel jacket & cuban heeled boots, which is an interesting look when you live in a sleepy village in southern England...
Just found a Stetson on clearance for $35 cause nobody else has a melon as big mine I guess😂
Perfect!
Interesting stuff. I noticed T-Rex doesn't wear a hat. I guess with his short arms and all, it would be hard for him to put one on... That might be a good job for BatjacJW to help with! 🤠
HAHAH!!!
Another great video. Any idea when straw hats became popular? All the old time photos show felt hats.
Straw hats have been around long before the old west. I imagine they were pretty popular in our neck of the woods due to the extreme heat.
Can you describe your hat? Now that is a great line.
Bob, there was more to the skit, but I lost it at that point and couldn't get it together after that. I was the only one of us laughing.
Can someone give me some guidance on hat purchasing. I am looking to portray someone circa 1860 or there abouts. Wanted to get something with a wide brim. My problem is that I have an unusual hat size. (Size 8). No one seems to carry these. Does anyone know of a maker of size 8 period correct hats that are affordable? Thank you
I think you may have to find one in in 7.5 and get it re-shaped. Either that or have one custom made.
Here's something to go
"Hmmmm" about....
John Wayne wore a giant cowboy hat in the first of his movies. Where is that hat at today?
Many of his hats are in museums. Some are lost forever.
@@ArizonaGhostriders just thought I'd drop a note. You never really know how much and who You influence. Not that I am anyone important, but I have caught myself watching for the little things in the western movies. Like the proper pistol grips, and holsters with the proper spaces for bullets, etc.
You folks have helped me to enjoy westerns more, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO !!! ❤
PS... A minister told me once that people who are not at all humble, will be the first to act humble and say, " I am so humble ! " You could pull this stunt on Dan with a straight face, if possible. Then bust out laughing afterwards. 😁
You folks be careful, they say the second round of the virus MIGHT hit us soon. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS AND KEEP YOU ALK SAFE ! 👍

🤠
Man I have to know where you got that black hat you always wear santee
I found it at a swap meet. Not hard to find them. It's a telescope crown and 4.5" brim.
@@ArizonaGhostriders awesome thank you so much for the reply I love your channel man.
I got my hat at walmart.....i only saw a rack full of them ONE time, it was $25 and everybody thinks its the real deal, that being said it did say "hecho en mexico" in gold leaf so i think someone goofed and priced them wrong!
I've seen those and they'll work. Good purchase. Keep your eyes peeled at Goodwill, though. You might find one that was Hecho in Estados Unidos.
Hey guys, I just want to let you know that I've seen this video before and I know I had liked it as I've liked every video of yours I've watched, but it seems RUclips has taken my like away? Idk if this has happened to you a lot or not but figured I'd let you know
Thanks for the info!
My hat is $53 and I take so much care of it
Great!
Got a 30x Resistol for $14 at second hand store.
Way to go! Great deal.
Wow amazing this is very entertaining video
I bought a brown Stetson hat for 50 cents at a thrift store
WATER HOLE SHAPES ALL MY HATS., 🔫🧙♂️
Hmmm.....that in Tombstone?
EBay
Yep
D bar J hats also crappy cowboy hats, trust me like 99% of them arnt crappy.
Good to know.
These hats are great! i wish i could wear one all the time! prob born in the wrong century haha very good video!
I just subbed (#557) to support you and I invite you to come see my content some day :) cheers!
Photographers had them push their hats up so their faces were visible. Right on. I've heard some say that's the way hats were worn all the time. Silly.
Yes. the brim on a hat was like sunglasses. Tipping it back on your head outside was not practical.
Let me know when you do a video on "Cats on a Budget", please.
Well...okay, but...
I’ve been frequenting antique stores all across the country looking for all sorts of things, but a nice hat to add to the collection was always in the back of my mind. Most hats were either really misshapen or too small for my head, but I got lucky at a place in Ohio that had an old Ten X Thoroughbred for $35. Not sure how old, but it’s in pretty nice condition and looks great on me
Very cool!
Yah, doing a "shot dead" stunt in a $300 RAND can cause some worry. Keep 'em coming
If ya got a nickel plated Colt it's also a worry!
Hats are funny things. Often if you look on ebay etc & search using the correct names you'll find the most expensive options. Search for something generic like "cowboy hat" or "black wide brimmed hat" & you'll find much the same thing but at a fraction of the price.
So true, have over fifty hats some $100-$200 (Stetsons, Resistol, American Hat Co and Millers Hat Co)ones, but my every day wear (Western Express)cost me less then $50, my go too hat wear it around the house and yard every day. Every hat I own, I've reshaped and replaced the hat band to fit me. But will admit Resistol is my favorite, perfect fit right out of the box, got a long oval head which Resistol makes their hats to fit. As always great vid. Keep up the good work.👍🏻🤠
Funny, I have a similar thing. The expensive hat I own is not my most comfy. The black one you see is a flea market purchase for less than $20.
My everyday hat cost me ZERO dollars. I was driving home from a conference and saw a Boot Barn and went in to grab a hat. Couldn't find anything then the sales lady asked me what's my size and she went to the back and grabbed a hat that was exactly what i was looking for and fit me perfectly. She said it was left by a customer to shape and he never came back so i can have it for free!
Awesome! You win!
Another great video! Sorry about the packing peanuts all over the kitchen. Next time, I'll use bubble wrap. LOL!
I was sort of enjoying the time away from his pranks. Sigh...
Apparently, styrofoam neutralizes a ghost's powers.
I notice during the summer time my local Wal-Mart sell cowboy hats and they don't charge a premium. I might get one.
Yeah, I often thing they might be a good starter hat, especially if you reshape them a bit.
I found a straw type hat at a thrift store for $3.00, I flattened it out on the brim. If you ever want to change the hat band. Check out the thrift stores for the really slim belts for about a dollar. They work pretty good. Are today's straw hats water proof ? I saw some 4 H fellows wearing their hats out in some light snow.
Good job!! I like your inginuity!
I'd say as long as you brush the snow off it and keep it as dry as possible, I'd say it'll hold up.
Also maybe waterproof it with some Scotchgard or something.
Like you Santee, I have a Knudsen Stetson of "Justified" fame. It was about $200 but doesn't fit due to it being made for round shaped head but mine is oval shaped. Rarely wear it and would like to know if I can reshape the hatband area to oval.
I have a video on hat shaping, but if it is wool, I would take it to a hatter who can steam it and shape it to your head. Yes, it can be done!
Such great tips Santee! I love the style of your videos! They are all so cool!😍🤗 Even though you paid over $200 for your hat I must say it looks amazing! Such a beautiful hat!! 👍 Money well spent definitely!
Thank you Elisa! I appreciate that very much. 👍
Great advice for hat shoppin' on a budget Santee. Like with a lot of our cowboy gear (shirts, vest, britches, etc...), check those Thrift Stores (Goodwill and such)!
Agreed. I've found some great costume stuff at thrift stores.
@@ChibiPanda8888- I still hit the thrift stores pretty regularly 🤠
Wear my Stetson Skyline out everyday here in California.... because of the mask mandate, we’re always covering our faces. My amigos and I go out and everyone thinks we’re bandidos Jajaja
That's funny! I bet banks love you.
No, I’m dirty dan!

Being a retired professional archaeologist myself and having worked and lived in the Mojave and other deserts, I have tried and used many different hats. I finally settled on the Akubra Australian Army Slouch hat which I paid $150.00, for winter and heavy field work. I usually could get them to last 7 to 10 years without care. They shed water nicely and with the side pinned up allowed for more air cooling along the side. However, I also started using a brimmed breezer hat as I got older.
Very nice hat choice!
@@ArizonaGhostriders Thanks. I always tell the young people coming out to work in the desert; of course in my old grizzled desert manner, the first thing they need to buy is a good cowboy style hat and a good bandana.
Do you know of any hat makers that do not make hats as stiff as a board and without those little holes in the sides?? Every hat/western wear store I go into has hats that all look exactly alike are so stiff they blow off when you ride at any faster than a slow walk. Movie cowboys, Gene, John, Hoppy, Matt, The Lone Ranger, et.al. don't wear stiff hats.
I know this is 2 years late, but, hats are stiff because they have to deal with all sorts of weather, snow, sleet, heavy rain, etc etc, as you war a stiff hat more it will soften up and conform to your head and the stiffening agent the store applied will wear down some, trust me, you don't want a soft crushable in rain or snow or anything else except for indoors and sunny days. As far as it flying off goes I'd chalk that up to fit rather than stiffness, you may want to size down a bit or try some sizing tape, I have 7 hats and not one of them flies off in wind or riding. If you want something that is nice and softER, the Stetson Carson is a good call. And as far as them all looking the same, just get it reshaped, no problem.
Ok, hypothetical situation... my "friend" has a hat, and has lovingly shaped it and built up a rich patina over the 10 years or so that he has had it. But then the wife makes me (I mean my friend) wash out all the sweat stains and dust. Is there a way I can... HE can... recondition a felt hat? (Like when someone washes all the flavoring out of a cast iron skillit?) Second question: Are there any Old-West uses for the gravy produced when this hat was washed? Feed to chickens? Use as glue? Need to know, asap, because in 9 or 10 years, I'll have to do it all over again. Or, my friend will, that is.
I don't know...but grey water is good for plants. Wouldn't it fall into that category?
I try and keep my straw hats (coated) under 60 bucks and my felt for around 125-200 and my stetsons I just buy
Good plan.
Make friends with city cowboys. Many of them have old hats they don't wear anymore that they will just give you.
That's. not a bad idea!
Yes it's a proper cowboy hat with a modern wire brim ... Speaking of hats ... I know this video is a few years old ... But I found a polyester hat that doesn't look cheap it look like felt form a distance oh ... Yeah it's a cheaper hat I think I maybe spent 25$ on it I wear it all seasons as a budget hat
Where I work we sell those and people love 'em. So, congrats on the budget hat!

How common were leather hats in the old west? I've been playing red dead redemption 2 and while i know its likely not 100% accurate, I'm still interested in john marstons black leather hat and I'm currently working on a real life replica of it
Not common at all (that's why they don't show up in museums). Very impractical. In the summer they don't breathe and the folks then knew it.
RDR2 got that wrong and this last year proved it. The Tombstone Redemption in 90 degree weather saw folks falling out due to the heat....and most had on leather hats.
I’m actually jealous that you folks have decent hats available in thrift/bargain/secondhand stores, but glad that you’re able to do so. we city slickers back east don’t have that luxury😳
thankfully you can find stuff on a budget to keep the memories alive
Goodwill has an auction site and you can find good hats there.
Hey. I've noticed you still reply to comments on this video and I have a question, if you wouldn't mind answering?
I'm 17 years old and I've been on a Yellowstone kick with my dad recently, I've played both RDR games and I love the Old Western setting to death. There's a couple thrift stores and an antique store in the small town where I live, but where do you think I should poke around first and how much should I ideally spend for my first 'real hat'?
Well, go with the thrift stores first, since antique shops tend to know the value of what they have and price (sometimes) high. Flea markets and swap meets are good too!
I tell ya Santee, I heard of polar bears already and how big and feared they are. But you have that crumb stealin, soda nappin, ear snappin, cactus crimpin, goat smellin, nozzle necked pain in the buttox polderghost gettin into everything and scarin that poor old TRex! Anybody there into ropin that polderghost? Kind Thanks Santee and take it easy cuz ya know how ya are! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
LOL! Thank you much
The hat looks mighty fine! Great fan from Austria, keep up the good work!
Hey, thanks!
Hey, Santee, You have a very nice hat. A tall Crown with the top being inverted in and a Small Rising in the middle of the inversion. Very Top Hat Society worthy Hat.
Thank You!
Can you make a video about props of a cowboy stunt show
Certainly!
AHHH...not my Nat Funmaker hat!... sadly my misshaped head makes any cheap hat a problem to fit. Nathaniels of Colorado (now in Texas) fit my head perfect...
good!
my cousin does the mountain man rondevous and for his hat he bought a blank floppy hat in the womans section, made a hat band shaped it to his liking and presto a custom hat for about 15 bucks made of wool felt..
Yeah, that would work.
When was the skyline cowboy hat invented?
Not sure, but I imagine in the 1920s
santee, i saw your video on weathering clothing but it didn’t talk about hats, could you make a short video about how to weather felt hats?
Sure! Thanks
If you Bury the bottle, would that put the ghost to rest?
On a serious note. How can you get the cheap hats if you do t live in the states (can’t get them at yard sales etc?)
Hmmmm, Goodwill has some on their website. EBay is another great option.
I bought a 100 x straw cowboy hat for 20 bucks today had to wear it when I ate I had it on I'm sorry I let mom and dad try it on they want one soon I will have to get them one also last yesr I got one for 5 dollers my most expensive one is and 8 x and I don't beleve the the hat on the bed thing
$5 is a good hat purchase. Yeah, the hat on the bed thing....superstitions.
I should have watched this for a second time before I rushed into shopping on Amazon.
🥃🥃🥃
Ive always wanted to catch a rattler and make my own hat band but I havent seen one recently
It's hard to keep them still on a hat. :-)
@@ArizonaGhostriders thats true. Im sure there is a way to make it work without a hospital trip though!Just gotta figure out that method🤔😂
I caught a copperhead a few years back, I made a nice hatband out of it.....
Us infantry in the west would've worn a slouch hat since its functional and was widely accepted during and after the Civil war
Don't forget the campaign hat used in the Indian wars.
You can get a good looking justin straw hat for 30 bucks at tractor supply.
Yeah.
That one hat looks exactly like the one Gus McCrea wore. I can see Robert Duvall wearing it.
Cool! Gus crease.
hahahahaha
What is the hat brand and style called at 1:35 ?? Peace and love from California!
That looks like a Josey Wales style.
Greetings from Ireland. As we see, it's good to put your brand on your hat as well.
Yes. Mr. Flood!
whats the name and model of the hat that bad jack is wearing in the beginning of the video. thanks-
Not sure. Hist hat is a standard open crown, creased on the sides like that.
Anybody know anything about Artel hats? Can't find anything on google
Don't know Artel Hats.
I bet you could exercise Bill out of you if you put booze in that orange soda
Probably.
My dad, grandparents and ancestors were all Caballeros/ old west cowboys
So cool! You come from great stock.
I got mine at 3 bucks at a yard sale each 6 total, both in excellent condition and 5X Beavery. I think I got a good deal.
Very nice!
@@ArizonaGhostriders Yep, I would have paid more
What yard sale or flea market y'all gone to? Arround here IF you can find a hat it gona cost same as a new one. Heck I'm poor
Batjac found his for under $10 at a yard sale. Mine was $20. Maybe look online at Goodwill.com they have an auction site.
Check on facebook. I had to start out with buying a cheap one from TSC. Eventually city cowboys who had old ones that they didn't wear anymore.
Do you have the Hat like Will Smith wore in the Wild Wild West movie And how much is it?
Mmmm, not really. But I think Knudsen Hats makes a repro of it.
I believe it is a Gamblers hat I found out. Do you have one not a crushable but a hard one?yo@@ArizonaGhostriders
Santee, can you do about high school in the old west
I've done 2 on education. You should find good info in those.
Chasing bones and specters sent me and gave you a lovely shout out. Just added you and clicked the notification bell. Excellent content and lovely to e-meet you!
Thank you Tosh! I'll sub ya back!
Remember when Walmart sold hats bought one for 25 bucks made a band out of black and blue rope... People loved many compliments it has however been lost in time
Awww! Bring 'em back!
Is a 50-70$ hat ok???
Sure, as long as it is decent quality.
good morning Cheese!!! ha ha ha, when you bought that Knudson hat, did it come with a parasol and stockings? ha ha ha... (sorry Cheese, just funnin.... I just can't picture you in anything but a black hat! )
HAHA! Funny as always, Joe! Your comments make me smile. I did the "big cheese" banner today just for you.
This may surprise you but I live in the same town that Bill Knudsen makes his hats in. I recommend him he's a great guy and makes wonderful hats. Glad to he has customers across the nation!
Hi, i am going to an reenactment, and i found a really cool leather hat for 10 bucks. My question now are, can i use it? Where it leather hats in the that time era?
There may have been leather hats here and there in the West, but it's a tough material for a hat.Needs to be thick enough to be rigid, which makes it heavy and hot. I would try to find a good wool or beaver one from Goodwill or a flea market that costs the same $10 and you can reshape it (this Saturday's video, incidentally).
Cool video my friend !!! We really liked it.
New subbed 556 Thank you so much.
Thank you! Don't worry...the T-Rex is docile.
I hate having a big head. it makes it hard to find a hat
I don't doubt that a bit. But they are out there.
Never wear a cowboy hat indoors
Thanks for watching!
Thanks a hatful.😁
Great video I was really looking for a good hat for my Australian expeditionary force impression
Check Goodwill for cowboy hats with big brims that you can fold up on one side.
I never knew Bill Brazelton was a member of the high fructose gang. Love it lol
HAH! Well...he was until Dustin Winegar got to be such a good shot.
Those hats look really good for budget ones! Have a great Sunday :)
I where a bandana on my daliy hat for a hat band
Cool
Good...
Subback please
OK!
Stetson El Patron 30x $100 New (looks like contest win with band signatures, Sanding and steaming myself)
Stetons 20x $45 Maybe worn or store model (from 30s-60s)
Some good prices.
Tule sad.want to make my own hat band but can't find a leather co. in tucson that's still in bizzness.
I've been wanting a western hat and I found a wool one for $3. Now I'm looking at how to wash it and restore it a bit. It's a little faded and full of animal hairs.
You may want to take it to a professional. Wool is tricky and doesn't like water.
Where can I get a hat like yours?
facebook.com/maverickshats/ . Just tell him the "Santee hat"
still have the hat and knee high cowboy boots my great grandpa bought around 1889, I wore those boots till I grew out of them now they sitn in a corner, never much wore his hat, it started out as a fedora type hat until the front wore out and he turned it around. funny kinda thing old cowboys did, have a great picture of him wearing both taken in the early 1900s
COol!!!
