Absolutely. It’s always a great pleasure to watch Dr Tharoor’s interviews. Everybody should learn from him the beauty of tolerance, of patience. He is so humble and is never in a hurry to overtake or override anyone and present his point of view. His personality automatically commands respect, honour, reverence and love of his viewers. There’s so much to learn from this Great human being🙏🙏🙏
Akhil Bhardwaj...you don’t need an educated sensible person. That will defeat the purpose. Last time you got a world class professor, what did he do? Other than following the orders of Italian boss and her son and letting 100 scams happen at his behest. You just need a person who has right spirit to serve the nation as best as he can.
@@sravanvedala7811 you really are clueless, aren't you? Manmohan Singh was one of the best PMs of India. It's just that he didnt have much support from his party which is filled with Sonia sycophants, who created a lot of hurdles for Manmohan Singh ji. His 2004-09 tenure was a golden period for the Indian economy. Even If you compare his 2009-14 tenure with Modi's 2014-19 tenure, you will find that India was in a much better condition than it was under modi in almost all aspects except 2 or 3. The industrial output was very high, the economy was much better(despite the 2012-13 and 2013-14 slowdown), the hunger index was quite less, primary education, healthcare, crime rate and many more; the UPA government was much better in than NDA. The reason Congress lost was because of all the scams that happened right under their noses and Rahul Gandhi's image wasn't exactly shining. He was a complete pappu without any knowledge of the issues of the country. Most of the policies made by the Modi govt were mediocre at best. Unplanned GST and Demonetization caused a huge downfall on our GDP and many small businesses were shut. Forget 2 crore new jobs per year, 1.1 crore jobs were lost in the financial year 2017-18; unemployment rate is now the worst since the last 45 years. Our rank in the hunger index is lower than underdeveloped countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh. The only reason Modi won the elections is because of his PR image and his godi media. Congress govt was bad, but the Modi govt is downright pathetic.
@@arghya4NE Bitch please, it's only controversial in your eyes because it gives a shit about Hindus more than the Muslim- funded Congress party ever did.
r u so dumb to see that he actually broke many shells. Come on when it matters for history and actual historic names you cant duck question but take stand.
Tharoor should ditch Congress and start a new party by grassroot organization. He is too sensible and educated for both Congress and BJP. And Indians need to look beyond Gandhis and Modi.
The common man can't relate to him. Uneducated, regressive, very typical and cultural, most middle and even uneducated upper middle class without education and exposure, will not be able to relate to shashi tharoor. Many won't even understand his point of view or how he is of benefit to the country. He is logical and practical. He knows the policies, goals and mindsets of the west and South Asia, on a state level. He knows the sensibilities of the common man and professionals of politicians of both the west and India. He has been exposed to both. He can speak from different angles and perspectives but the majority of people will not be able to understand him. The majority of Indian people don't have his level of exposure. Most NRIs don't even have his level of exposure. You can't claim to have knowledge or exposure that you don't have. It's evident that he knows what he's talking about. He has clearly incorporated the best of both worlds. I've seen videos where people complained that he made India look bad on an international platform, when he was actually acknowledging the problems that do exist and problems that have been highlighted worldwide, which showed that he was speaking as a responsible politician who recognises the problems and wants a solution, instead of ignoring the question or justifying the issues like a coward. He makes India look good on an international platform. He knows how to talk to the western media and how to get his point across. He's educated, aware and intelligent enough to know the sensibilities of the people in the west. The average person doesn't get shashi tharoor. He has immense experience and understanding of real issues in South Asia. He gets to the root cause of issues and his solutions are practical. People like him cannot be understood by the common man or most Indians, NRIs, etc that lack education, exposure and political, foreign and diplomatic exposure to the west. He lived abroad and worked for the UN. Shashi tharoor is way ahead of other politicians in India. He is beyond the comprehension of an uneducated mind that lacks exposure, understanding and social skills. He is not forming his own party because he knows the sensibilities, lack of understanding, lack of education and exposure of the common man. Experience cannot be taught, mimicked or indoctrinated. He is experienced. He has a global mindset due to which his perspective differs from the common man. It's the vote of the common man that counts. The uneducated chai walla is a representative of the common man.
sss sss seriously this guy asks such tough compelling questions Karan is Amazing. One youtube there are few videos where videos like karan thapar slapped by some politician. I think people should realise that it's a journalist's job to ask tough compelling questions to people who hold some power
Just landed to watch Dr. Sashi tharror speak but ended up liking Karan Thapar way to questioning. This happens when great interviewer interview extraordinarily gifted interviewee 😍 Nonetheless Freedom of speech should not be distorted at the cause of emotion 🖒
Asking questions is easy, to answer is difficult especially when you are all in one- a writer who wants absolute artistic freedom, a true parliamentarian who wants the constitution to be the supreme guide, a person from opposition party who can not publicly defame its leaders and finally a peace loving citizen who wants absolute peace and harmony under all circumstances.
If formal education was the primary quality for a good politician, then professors would be running the country. It's like saying one would be a great entrepreneur if one got an MBA degree from a good college.
Krishna Rao dude thats all hearsay, and do you really think he's worse than the guys who are running thr country right now. Atleast we'll have someone educated or even experienced enough to run this country. You're seeing whats happening in today's time right, and if you really are that blind to see it all then i can't help it bro.
Deepak Nag - yes finally! Education does not mean great at anything or everything. Educated are the best at undetectable corruption, they will move the money and we will be none the wiser...we need good moral code, not religious code!
That Girl - then don't insult our intelligence by using a statement that belittles people that 'pray' or consider cow important. Murder is murder, whatever the reason may be; and taking a handful of instances to represent 80% of a populations' belief in an insulting way, doesn't justify your original statement.
This is the best interview I have ever seen. And it is the first time I have seen Dr. Shashi Tharoor being so diplomatic and uncomfortable. I am a great fan of him but feeling disappointed this time.
westerns........ even Shashi said Makbool Fida his friend and western who defends free speech. We are desi but we defend free speech too but it comes with responsibility.
karan is rite about freedom of speech shashi is also rite about the law and order issues which out weighs the benifit of sitting and enjoying a 3hour movie compared to mob violence. so for time being it has to be postponed and only after convincing the mob it has to be released. .. dont u think it is a very wise answer. and a very satisfying and diplomatic statement. ?
Kaushik Ds yeah but not allowing people to exercise the freedom of expression in Democratic country is breaking the law and rules. Tharoor is willing to break that law and bend the rules because government can't handle mob like situation to occur or should I say don't want to spend money in security. It's not a about enjoying the movie it's about foundation of the country. If government itself bend down to few ppl then it sets the example that anybody can get away with anything in this country as long as you instill fear and gather bunch of ppl to perpetuate violence.
of course u are correct about shashi willing to bend the rules. to avoid conflict which indirectly suggests the governments failure or inefficiency in controlling mob. but there is no other option available. coz as we all know they are politician and has to be nice to people. what would u have done if u are to be the decision maker in this issue. u can take side of film maker and release the movie or take side of angry mob and ban the movie put a wise and diplomatic end by postpoing the release and resolve the issue by then any other outside the box or innovative sollution. pls reply about ur opinion
Nice to people doesn't mean you can allow them to break laws. If they break laws government has every right to take action . If there is no option that means all your taxpayer money is either going in waste or in someone's pocket. Let me give you an example, recently in US . A group called Antifa were not allowing conservative speakers to give speeches and conduct debates in major Universities. They would vandalize and smash the place Create chaos while school security sit there doing nothing. And when confronted unversity would say yeah but we can't do anything about it .This speeches make people go for safe spaces. So one the of the leading speaker complained in the Congress and then finally not able to counter his argument instead of investigating this group they push Berkely Univ to provided Ben with $600000 security. And they had to provide him .Atleast that was done. Regardless of what measures were taken important thing is freedom of speech was maintained and violence was annihilated. Similar steps could be taken by this government learning from this incident. The government has enough money to provide security and stop the mob. They just don't want to loose their pockets which contains our hard earned money.
Kindly refrain from using the word Genius for Sashi Tharoor. This word is reserved for the likes of Einstein, Darwin, Picasso, Pele, Tendulkar, Galileo, Leonardo da Vinci, Shakespeare and Richard Feynman. Sashi Tharoor is a reasonably rational person who is also an eloquent speaker.
Freedom of speech is absolute. What we miss is morality. If someone says bad about me and my society, he needs to be banished by a moral society if that person just make controversy for gain limelight. I stay in Germany and a vice chancellor had to resign when someone proved his doctored thesis was plagiarized. The society did not like him, even when he did gr8 things. Our mahabharat says how Ashwatama was treated by world, when he 'tried' to kill a kid as consequence of his failure. Hope people of India take Moral stand and not bring religion and personal beliefs in society.
really! i am not a big shashi tharoor admirer but interrupting someone in the middle of his answer when the person is educated and eloquent doesn't mean he is getting pushed back forward up or down. it simply means you are a desperate and an unreasonable journalist
@Divyanand Dwivedi Some eloquent and educated people can take an undemocratic stand. It was Thapar's duty to point it out every time the interviewee did that, right where it was happening. When you jump a red light you get stopped right away, and not after being allowed to get to your destination, for greater impact.
Sauravendra, Nonsense... He was lying repeatedly... Western democracies are mature my ass... What nonsense?? Three Americans were deported from Britain and permanently banned from reentering for saying "Allah is gay" recently which offended local Muslims... India never goes that extreme...West is regressive as f**k... You had Donald Trump threatening to contest free and fair elections if he lost... This never happened in India even in Indira Gandhi's time... Karan Thapar repeatedly proves himself as an unpaid British stooge.... He even hated Tharoor's book on British atrocities... Let him go there... He can be a good slave which he is adept at being anyways...
Forget which side you are on. Don't you just love a good conversation, smartly crafted arguments, gorgeous eloquence and most of all - noone shouting another down.
I agree with Karan Thapar that Indians are intellectually and emotionally not ready to be a truly democratic. Shashi Tharoor, or any other politician for that matter, regardless of what party he represents, would deny that for obvious reasons.
He could have, but professional qualifications don’t make up for moral degeneration. Nation would like to know about his affairs, especially with a Pakistani journalist which could have mandated eliminating Sunanda.
amar singh nation needs to know nothing I think we need to mind our own business when it comes to anyone's personal life and till now nothing has been proven.
What a pleasure to watch, both gentleman gave a masterclass on civilised discussion. There is no way, Mr. Tharoor is a politician - not once did he avoid answering the questions and, kept telling the truth in way that made perfect sense. He won't go far, way too honest!
there used to be a guide at chittorgarh fort as he was conducting a tour of the fort for the visitors ,he was describing how allaudin came here and how he was beaten and driven away, unfortunately one of the visitor was a historian he objected that allaudin never came here, prompt came the reply of the guide"sir as long as bheru singh is guide here he will come daily and daily he will be driven away
Mr Tharoor is beating about the bush because of his political standing . Why isn't he confronting the issue like he did so with the British colonialism ? That's the reason why Mr Thapar is clarifying.
Sometimes I think Mr Tharoor is too much of a pragmatist... but Karan is right the indian people are not matured enough to handle the meaning of free speech... We are an exceptionally emotional people and our base impulses frequently are allowed to reign... This what happens with highly politicized education
Well i stand with Karan Thapar views that in place of educating people or making them understand freedom of speech on which the very idea of democracy stands, we choose to curb it because its easy path to maintain law and order. In reply to Mr Sashi Tharoor saying that choosing between the lesser evil and tackling situation with lousy choice. I would like to say that when Socrates was awarded death penalty for expressing his view toward the very idea of an Ideal State. Plato and his other followers in some high position offered him escape using their connections, but he said that if i ran today, then the very principle for which i am standing would be defeated. He drank the poison. It is the principle which we have to maintain. For Shashi Tharoor, i always like him for his honesty and statesmanship, he admitted the disgraceful thing his party did in Salman Rushdie case and with Hussain. And its great to see Karan joining The Wire, this channel is going to be big in next upcoming years.
I think this debate also exposed the weak moral ground of the politicians and today's politics which is opportunistic and unethical, unprincipled and often undemocratic. This signifies a moral degradation even in the best of the Western educated minds of the country leaving their education useless because they are not being acted upon.
Max Elan unfortunately you are right but are we not postponing righteousness for temporary political games.. Bro look at the broader picture.. Problem is not with politics but the basic perpetuation of the same tendency even after being in power... That means they are dishonest all the time..
@ Max Elan and Atul, I will like to add that the problem are not leaders but the public itself. Listen what Mr Tharoor said somewhere in interview by quoting Lord Macaulay that Indian are emotional people prone to taking offence and overreact and freedom of speech is very difficult to follow here. Britishers done extensive research over Indian people in order to make their rule firmly established. I feel fortunate enough to be one of few who don't know history of our by stories narrated by grandmother, father, uncle or some elder in our colony. I actually read it. Unfortunately most of the people here know history by the viewpoint and ideology which their families follow so it all got fucked up. We need educational reforms very urgently because we are moving toward dumbness day by day. Formal educated Man/Women is different that rational prudent man/women. Problem is that India follows different principle "Samjhdaari se badi Izzat hai" ( Satisfying ego is more important than proliferate rationality ). When Kiren rijiju tweeted that quote of Nostradamus (lol) that there will be one leader in pan Asia who will change history whatever. Firstly look at the level of his grasp in literature .. Nostradamus seriously ? so i was thinking that we should also post that "there is going to be a time when whole nation will go nuts". There is nothing we can do except trying to stay sane. Leaders are not Dishonest they are the reflection of our society.
There is this uncomfortable truth that both failed to acknowledge. Before the movie is released the trailer has offended the Rajputs. The trailer which shows their beloved queen romancing with the invader, the very same invader to escape whom she killed herself in a pyre!. Think why the director who has already been manhandled in the sets of the movie, knowing very well how such an intro to the movie is going to vex the rajputs still goes ahead with this highly provocative trailer. An intellectual debate between two secular beings with no feelings or attachments, no pride or passion, will fail to note such subtle emotions
Karan Thapar tried his best to make him speak that India is not a true democracy,,,,but, remember Shashi Tharoor is a diplomat par excellence,,,,well,he has said so,but,in a diplomatic style!!! Anyways,Thanks for Wire for bringing such lucrative debate....
Satya Pratap Singh gorkhas and Marathas are far greater warrior . Rajput's are overrated and are good at only pompous theatrics ,who are actually better suited for the stage than in battlefield.
Well, I really admire Shashi Tharoor and his intellectual abilities but I am a bit unhappy about how Karan Thapar is trying to modify each and every logical point Shashi is putting forward.I mean it is good to have a good grip at journalism but you can never really apply each and every "noble" idea in a vast and culturally diverse country like India,As said by Mr. Tharoor in the interview we need to be "realists" in this situation and not preach absolutism.Really admire Shashi tharoor for his titillating intellectual and unbiased approach here.
That is what great journalists do. He is attacking Shashi as an interviewer but deep down he may agree to some of his points. He is the real "Devil's advocate"
@24:01 Tharoor trying so hard not to say yes! Very good dialog from both sides, however the interviewer seems a bit defensive and not letting responses finish.
Karan is a great interviewer. Those people complaining that Karan didn't let Shashi Tharoor speak should watch the interview once again. It took Shashi a great amount of effort to condemn the fact that Salman Rushdie was barred from addressing a session at Jaipur LitFest even via a teleconfrence link after being disallowed to physically attend the session. Shashi would have labelled it as an outright assault on freedom of expression had something similar in nature transpired in a non-Congress governed state. I am an admirer of Dr.Tharoor and a secualrist to the core, if one were to take an objective view of censorship in India then one is bound to arrive at the conclusion that all these years even Congress, the self-proclaimed vanguard of liberalism and civil liberties, has had a total disregard for freedom of expression at moments when it was required to uphold it. BJP's record in this matter has certainly been worse. Under BJP's rule militantism, be it cultural or religious, has been emboldenend to such an extent that an organization's hare brained opposition to a piece artistic freedom can earn it fame and recognition. If the Congress wants to make a comeback it should put its doublespeak on such matters to a rest, I say so because right wing's opposition to free speech is basically premised upon misdeeds that Congress committed in the past.
@Jr26 S Congress was only reflecting the attitude of it's constituents with respect to secularism. Actually, it's the people of the country who're not secular.
@Jr26 S From the beginning of time till the end of time, any people will only get leadership that they're collectively deserving enough to get. If power comes from the people, blame not leaders but yourself.
@Jr26 S You resort to offensive name-calling, but I won't be as offensive when I say to you that you're perception of reality is < 1%. It is demonstrable by your failure to recognize the Free Will of Humans as the single-most powerful tool in the entire universe. Dictators, British Raj, Mughal Empire, Congress Raj, BJP Raj, etc., are all brought about by the quality of decision-making of the people. Acting to defend oneself and acting not to defend oneself are both one's own decisions.
@@StudentOf10 with the aforementioned statement, what you are trying to say is that the people elect leaders that conform to the POPULAR AND MAJORITY BELIEFS, thereby INSINUATING that elected leaders REPRESENT THE COLLECTIVE CONSCIENCE of the society and therefore they would only mirror the society rather than bring about any positive change. THAT IS SO SO WRONG THAT IT MAKES ME CRINGE! AND I'll PROVE to you why YOU'RE WRONG with an IRREFUTABLE case in point- Abraham lincoln was the president of the united states of america at the time slavery was abolished under the emancipation proclamation. At that time, upwards of 80% black people were slaves under white people thereby conveying the popular belief. Had the people got the leader they deserved SLAVERY WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ABOLISHED !! BUT political leadership IS NOT about pandering to the popular beliefs, ITS ABOUT USING POWER TO EFFECT POSITIVE CHANGE TO THE SOCIETY. So dont throw around cool lines without understanding the context in which they are spoken. POWER IS TRANSFERRED FROM PEOPLE TO LEADERSHIP SO THEY CAN DO WHATS RIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE, EVEN IF THEY APPEAR TO NOT 'DESERVE' IT !
This one... Right here...Is the best example of a healthy intellectual discussion!!! Both are full of knowledge, perspectives and intellect... I enjoyed it thoroughly!!!
Incredible incredible interview ! Highly intellectual, coherent, incisive, honest and contemplative from both sides! Mr. Tharoor defended his position to the best he could and made clear and completely valid arguments and so did Karan thapar. While Mr. Thapar was precise, shrewd, on point and might i say so, even CORRECT about EVERY POINT he made ESPECIALLY about the silence on part of both parties in condemning the actions of the riot and violence inciting religeous factions, for the sake of VOTE BANK, WHERE HE FAILED was in realising the REALISTIC SCENARIO of this country as was rightfully conveyed by Mr. Tharoor's argument, where he clearly conveyed that the choice the government had to make was between protecting freedom of speech and protecting the lives of innocent movie-goers, who might have become the victims of mob lynching even if government chose to provide extra security. So they chose the latter ! And even rightfully so, considering that even the best of security measures might not necessarily curb violence( just consider the protective detail that john kennedy had but he was still killed) SO ALL PROPS TO MR. THAROOR for making that argument. BUT, what the government and BOTH THE PARTIES should have done was DISAGREE, CONDEMN and CRITICISE THE VIOLENCE orchestrated by these factions and NOT PANDER to these psycho rioting factions FOR VOTE BANKS ! And both of them conveyed that clearly !! So, bothe winners !
Freedom of expression is a terrible thing. It only shows creativity. Creativity is bad because it defies conformity. Creativity and freedom of expression belong to the disgusting secular culture which is not a culture at all. Culture is painting ambulances in saffron. Culture is mob violence. Culture is burning cinema halls. Our values should be chopping off noses and ears of women, threaten people of death if they make such bad films or draw Durga in nude or write fiction on Muhammad. Religious lunacy is the best thing. Democracy is bad. Liberalism is a sin. Secularism is a bad western influence. Education is also bad because western people brought this sort of irresponsible rational way of thinking which stops us from being morons. We must follow the great uneducated leader of ours, our great dictator- Narendra Bhai Modi and the good samaritan tadipaar Amit Shah. Why cry for freedom of expression? Soon you will have no freedom, thanks to Aadhaar.
Praveesh you see these are the people called coconut Indians - they're brown at the skin; but white within. And that isn't the man describing to become the PM
Ashrith Harith haha. You are making new category for Indians . Very creative and admirable. But he is white/western because of his education and diplomat experience in UNO. When is the last time, you have seen a skilled and educated diplomat like him in Indian politics. ? I will even launch an independent campaign for him if he is ditching Sonia family n make a new party or if Congress propose him as their PM candidate. :D.
Mr.Thapar, pls let the other person answer to your questions rather than u cutting him off in the middle of the conversation and adding your view point as his. This reminds me of another journalist who calls people to his news talk show but never let them speak their mind. Peace..
I think Mr. thapar has correct points and about interruption i think he does give ample time to opposite side so it doesn't matter...and moreover his questions and points do make sense !!!
Mr thapar stopped him when it was required. And RePublicity Tv's unprincipled showman is nothing in front of karan. Just look at his questions and the way he is observing each and every word Dr Tharoor is saying, he even remembers what he said from the inception of this interview.
Its an interview, not a debate...Shashi Tharoor doesn't have to be on backfoot and if he seems to be is because he is not allowed to complete his arguments. Moreover, Karan Thapar is putting words in Shashi's mouth and when he tries to justify his point, he is being cut off.
Great interview.... What i want to say is society takes its own time to change.... There is no value of an individual in a society... An indian society has changed so much so far and it is a continuous process.... It just need time to absorb ... The good thing is, see we are talking /pondering/understanding importance of rights of citizens... The more we talk ,hear, think , the more we understand how to incorporate it in our society or adjust society accordingly
Wire should ask Karan Thapar should stop interrupting his guests. With Sashi Thatoor, people want to hear him more than Karan. And stop forcing his interpretations through other people’s throats. He sounds like a megalomaniac. Shashi was eloquent as always
007Chakochi agreed. This isn't a debate, or why else was the video posted as "Shashi Tharoor On The Padmavati Controversy And Freedom Of Expression"? Mr Karan is desperately trying to control the narrative while the narrative is supposed to be Mr Tharoor's views.
Actually.. Karan Thappar is exactly what I expect from a journalist. He did interrupt the conversation occasionally but unlike Arnab Goswami he did that in a dignified way, keeping the dialogue on the topic. Another.. He is an unbiased interviewer who questioned about Tharoor's political allegiance in a hard hitting way. Thus, giving exact parallel between Congress and BJP regime.
A request to The Wire. Can you re-upload the video and cut out all of Karan Thapar? He seems like he is trying too hard to lash out on Shashi Tharoor, who by the way, is a delight to listen to!
What a quality interview. Karan Thapar speaks the obvious, tries to corner the politician. The politician uses history and context to defend the allegations. Both of them were exemplary and regardless of which side you're on, this is what democracy is about. More importantly this is the press asking great questions on the principle of matters. For being responsible journalists, thank you Wire. You're a rare RARE breed nowadays.
Most of these Journalist should have some decency in letting the guest finish their thought, or even their sentences, for God's sake. It seems the interviewer is asking a long winded question, with lot of facts woven into the question itself, trying to sound well informed, and when the guest starts speaking, interrupts him more often than chain pulling in a train going thru Jaunpur. Can someone talk some sense into him???
In awe of Karan Thapar! For the first time while Tharoor being on the stage, someone else so suavely and per se quite meticulously reasoned enough almost upto a point for The Thalaiva of Oration- Tharoor to cave in. For the first time did Tharoor refute my expectation! I so yearned for a blatant Yes- Karni Sena is wrong or "Education is what Rajasthan should concentrate on than 'thang thoog hats' (Ghoonghats)"..like his 'tweet'... Alas, politics has won over this refined resplendent author! Each one held one's rostrum well; but Karan, with reason and progression on his side, won!
It took 12 minutes for Karan to convince Tharoor that principle of freedom of expression is important!! Even afterwards, Tharoor went on favouring that principles doesn't matter!!!! Appalling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Karan needs to learn how to interview intellectuals like Shashi Tharoor . He is not even letting him finish what he is saying. Shashi Tharoor is the best speaker.
What I interpreted from this conversation is= To get power and maintain seat is important than freedom of speech. And for the incumbent of country executives, to spend their tenure without stain is more important than values and principles, it is better to support majority or remain silent for us to achieve destination even when rational are using the right freedom that they enjoy and have. Now the solution to such situations is need to be give by civil society. Is there any one who agree with me??????
I am not with this new diplomatic, typical vote bank politian tharoor.. if govt can't protect constitutional morals then hell with them... it's official there are no liberal political parties left in India... sad reality.
Suraj Dip, it's an impartial interviewer's job to play the Devil's Advocate. I don't know what Karan Thapar's personal views about many things are, but he's a pretty good interviewer. Idiot.
If perception of people is all that matter superseding truths Then I personally believe that only British Raj could abolish SATI PRATHA as our elected representatives are more concerned with their own future by taking PEOPLE'S (MOB's) FAVORITE decision.
British raj would have done nothing had not Rammohan come forward to convince them about the banning of Sati Pratha. When Rammohan first raised the issue before the British they were reluctant to poke their nose into the affair. 99% credit goes to Rammohan Roy. Had the French ruled India instead of the British Rammohan Roy would have approached the French. The British took the credit and Rammohan's last days spent in neglect and poverty in Britain.
The most amazing debate I came across in a long time! If only the reporters could let the speakers finish their sentences, it would be a much better experience.
My request to Indian Journalists, please don't ask a man like Shahhi Tharor on a trivial issue like this. He is a great thinker please take benefit from him and put forward other burning issues that we have in the sub-continent. Thanks. Love from Pakistan.
mohammad ayaz khan freedom of free speech and expression is not really a trivial issue at all. It shows the mentality and social fabric of the entire Indian subcontinent. Our inability as a people to accept other people's views and thoughts and our tendency to get offended at imaginary slights is our biggest weakness as a culture.
franscientist that's an issue of the subcontinent and south Asians in general. But because there is that issue and people lack critical thinking, logical reasoning and the ability to separate facts from fiction, public figures and anyone who's statement or conduct becomes vital, is subject to the immaturity of its audience. The majority of people are not educated enough to separate two different things or to comprehend something or what it is, without making conclusions. The common man does have pre conceived notions and prejudices. Where religion and culture is concerned, south Asians are too sensitive and cannot think outside of what they have been taught. Shashi tharoor can but he is bound and cannot express himself fully here. Should he speak as an author, politician or himself? And if he speaks as himself, his words will definitely be misconstrued and compared to the conduct of his party, because like I mentioned before, people cannot separate the two. Shashi tharoor has experience of both Asia and the west. He has had exposure. He knows the mindset, sensibilities and style of governance of both. That's how he can distinguish between the two and gauge the sensibilities and sometimes immaturity of local people. Personally, I'm sure that tharoor can watch padmavat and not be offended but to state that on national TV, will definitely be taken out of context and misconstrued. Educated people of Tharoors caliber have foresight, they can weigh the pros and cons of a certain decision and they can foresee the potential reactions and havoc. An uneducated mind that lacks exposure and awareness, can't do that. Most south Asians don't have the exposure that Shashi tharoor has, that's evident from their conduct, mindset and inability to foresee potential problems. Shashi knows what he's talking about.
Shashi Tharoor probably agreed with him on more than half the issues but couldn't say so. Also good job Karan Thapar on holding his feet to the fire and asking him hard questions.
This is a really good discussion, which is pretty rare for any Indian News/TV debate discussion. In addition to both speakers having a very good command over the language, they also display really good articulation of their ideas! And for a change Karan Thapar isn't that irritating! :)
I don't care about the topic or who is right or wrong. This is an example of a mature conversation. No stupid interruptions and such eloquence on the part of the host and the guest. Bravo Shashi Tharoor. The man is far ahead of our times!
Disappointed with Shashi Tharoor. Hate speech should be protected under free speech while threats shouldn't be. Freedom of expression should be absolute or else it's not freedom, it's as clear as night and day.
The interviewer aka questioner is very smart in putting questions against answerer. It seems that Mr Karan Thapar somewhere knew the answers that were going to be followed, he came prepared and nailed it totally. On the other hand, Mr Shashi Tharoor answered it very smartly and smoothingly. Such is the grace of both of them. From talking about Padmavati to discussing characters of all the politicians and the Parties they belong to, they did it very well and Yess Dosti a bank rahe at the end :D It twas fun watching it, literally.
He should, he wanted to so badly, but he know he can't. The answer for this was given by Karan itself, Indian people are not matured enough to think rationally when it's about their sentiments.

Wow .....Karan sir, hats off to you the way you sweat Mr Shashi Tharoor by asking him some really really tough questions by the way he looks very nervous sitting in front of you..... these wire anchors doing a great job
Shashi Tharoor puts up a poor defence of free speech here. Once you set the precedent that the government will seek to avoid law and order issues by stifling the speaker and not the mob, the mob has every incentive to get outraged and demonstrate their 'strength'.
You are symbol of freedom of speech I think the people who are ruling now they want suppress freedom of speech but we Indian will be like shashi sir.you are a real tiger of India.
Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie was banned in India. The government at that time was afraid of Muslim mobs going wild. Don't meddle with people's feelings and start a discussion when mobs run wild. Bored with all these yukky issues.
While compare to this interview Jayalalitha with Karanthapar interview is too good. The way she answered is awesome,Her English, and highly appreciatable.

There’s so much to learn from this Great human being🙏🙏🙏
Shashi Tharoor for next PM.We need an educated sensible person at the top.
Akhil Bhardwaj...you don’t need an educated sensible person. That will defeat the purpose. Last time you got a world class professor, what did he do?

So true
He wouldn't connect with majority of non English speaking Indians
kunchok Sonam Thus came Aam Admi? Any difference?

Asking questions is easy, to answer is difficult especially when you are all in one- a writer who wants absolute artistic freedom, a true parliamentarian who wants the constitution to be the supreme guide, a person from opposition party who can not publicly defame its leaders and finally a peace loving citizen who wants absolute peace and harmony under all circumstances.

amazing job by wire
Kaushik Ds how is tharoor correct on these one?
karan is rite about freedom of speech
shashi is also rite about the law and order issues which out weighs the benifit of sitting and enjoying a 3hour movie compared to mob violence. so for time being it has to be postponed and only after convincing the mob it has to be released. ..
dont u think it is a very wise answer. and a very satisfying and diplomatic statement.
If government itself bend down to few ppl then it sets the example that anybody can get away with anything in this country as long as you instill fear and gather bunch of ppl to perpetuate violence.
of course u are correct about shashi willing to bend the rules. to avoid conflict which indirectly suggests the governments failure or inefficiency in controlling mob. but there is no other option available.
coz as we all know they are politician and has to be nice to people.
what would u have done if u are to be the decision maker in this issue.
u can take side of film maker and release the movie
or take side of angry mob and ban the movie
put a wise and diplomatic end by postpoing the release and resolve the issue by then
any other outside the box or innovative sollution.
pls reply about ur opinion

Think why the director who has already been manhandled in the sets of the movie, knowing very well how such an intro to the movie is going to vex the rajputs still goes ahead with this highly provocative trailer.

Our country isn’t intellectually and emotionally ready to allow freedom of speech. Well said.
@Vab101 Hello Brother, are You there; - Alive...?!
I will even launch an independent campaign for him if he is ditching Sonia family n make a new party or if Congress propose him as their PM candidate. :D.
Intellectually and emotionally, Indians are not ready to uphold a pillar of democracy - free speech. Very true!!!
Stop Interrupting your guest... Let him finish answering your question.. Indian media has way to go....
Mr.Thapar, pls let the other person answer to your questions rather than u cutting him off in the middle of the conversation and adding your view point as his. This reminds me of another journalist who calls people to his news talk show but never let them speak their mind.
Peace..
Santosh Thomas if you don't see the difference between the two, you don't know night from day.
I think Mr. thapar has correct points and about interruption i think he does give ample time to opposite side so it doesn't matter...and moreover his questions and points do make sense !!!
Actually TV does not help. It only shows who all are shouting and who are silent. Besides that, cannot understand a thing.
VIJAY SAI rightly said... but we have to learn to become less emotional and lesser sensitive
Karan : " We are demographic inorder to vote but not enough to understand the free speech and offence it gives " 🙌👏👏👏 NAILED IT 🔨
Wire should ask Karan Thapar should stop interrupting his guests. With Sashi Thatoor, people want to hear him more than Karan. And stop forcing his interpretations through other people’s throats. He sounds like a megalomaniac.
Shashi was eloquent as always
As Shorya rightly said, Mr. Karan's job is to question Mr. Tharoor or else it would be just a statement instead of a debate.
I think your comment shows what is wrong with India.. We hero worship to a fault.. I feel Karan sir is asking some pertinent questions..
I suggest you to hear a speech. This is an interview, questions will be asked.
Very very mature talk.
This one interview I really loved watching it !! Karan and Shashi both are simply awesome.
"you have been offensive, Karan... I shall now conduct a demonstration against you." 😂
Hi, there! 💕
I feel no shame in admitting that I need subtitles for this 😁
Journalism at its finest! Mr. Thapar, you've earned yourself a fan!
What an interview! Quality of subject, presentation and the diplomacy. Great. Worth watching both of you people.
Pls bring Kapil sibal also in ur interview
Karan needs to learn how to interview intellectuals like Shashi Tharoor . He is not even letting him finish what he is saying. Shashi Tharoor is the best speaker.
Two legends together 😇
Delightful conversation. Was craving for a discussion this nuanced, argumentive and yet deficient of shrillness.
Wow...masterpiece👌
Hi, there! 💕
The CPM exists.
A wonderful illustration of respectful dialogue on opposing views.
Karan is probably the best interviewer of our times. Glad to see him in his original flavour ,doing what he does best ! 👍
Karan does not shout, intimidate and insult the interviewees. He treats them with respect at personal level.
Suraj Dip want to know what u call as anti india
queensussk that way he might be somehow call critic but not at all anti.
By the way can u explain to me "anti national "
Suraj Dip, it's an impartial interviewer's job to play the Devil's Advocate. I don't know what Karan Thapar's personal views about many things are, but he's a pretty good interviewer. Idiot.
Couldnt have been better. Terrific convo...
If perception of people is all that matter superseding truths
Then I personally believe that only British Raj could abolish SATI PRATHA as our elected representatives are more concerned with their own future by taking PEOPLE'S (MOB's) FAVORITE decision.
He doesn't allow Tharoor to complete his answer...sick man
What a debate with these intellectuals
Great video. Intellectual conversation is so invigorating.
I admire Shashi Tharoor but in this interview he was at some extent unanswerable.
He was meant for UN, not India's Great Politics Circus
Karan is not really a good interviewer. He is just good at twisting words and paraphrasing Shashi's comments.
Shashi Tharoor probably agreed with him on more than half the issues but couldn't say so. Also good job Karan Thapar on holding his feet to the fire and asking him hard questions.
I really like Shashi Tharoor. The only politician I like in India.
This is a really good discussion, which is pretty rare for any Indian News/TV debate discussion. In addition to both speakers having a very good command over the language, they also display really good articulation of their ideas! And for a change Karan Thapar isn't that irritating! :)
Mr. Thaper ask all these questions to modi! Then say.
Ankur Joshi "Dosti apni bani rahe" Sipping the water
Modi doesn’t have the guts to face the media.
except "Godi Media"!!
Modi already gave him a tough time. ruclips.net/video/M-bwHT2dgog/видео.html
From talking about Padmavati to discussing characters of all the politicians and the Parties they belong to, they did it very well and Yess Dosti a bank rahe at the end :D
It twas fun watching it, literally.
Disappointed Disappointed Disappointed..I thought Shashi tharoor will openly support padmavati instead of being diplomatic
Why should it be banned?
Ashees Kumar Why must it be banned?
Unfortunately He is Educated..
He should, he wanted to so badly, but he know he can't. The answer for this was given by Karan itself, Indian people are not matured enough to think rationally when it's about their sentiments.
Shivam Singh lol..By ur Logic Offense is the best defence.. Get some Quality Education.. Otherwise day is not far when u will support Lynching and Murderer..😊
Wow .....Karan sir,
hats off to you the way you sweat Mr Shashi Tharoor by asking him some really really tough questions by the way he looks very nervous sitting in front of you..... these wire anchors doing a great job
Shashi Tharoor puts up a poor defence of free speech here. Once you set the precedent that the government will seek to avoid law and order issues by stifling the speaker and not the mob, the mob has every incentive to get outraged and demonstrate their 'strength'.
salman rushdie should be allowed in india too if this film is allowed to release.
While compare to this interview
Jayalalitha with Karanthapar interview is too good.
The way she answered is awesome,Her English, and highly appreciatable.
It’s really irritating to hear interruptions of karan
