He is so humble and is never in a hurry to overtake or override anyone and present his point of view. His personality automatically commands respect, honour, reverence and love of his viewers. There’s so much to learn from this Great human being🙏🙏🙏

      Akhil Bhardwaj...you don’t need an educated sensible person. That will defeat the purpose. Last time you got a world class professor, what did he do? Other than following the orders of Italian boss and her son and letting 100 scams happen at his behest. You just need a person who has right spirit to serve the nation as best as he can.

      @@sravanvedala7811 you really are clueless, aren't you? Manmohan Singh was one of the best PMs of India. It's just that he didnt have much support from his party which is filled with Sonia sycophants, who created a lot of hurdles for Manmohan Singh ji. His 2004-09 tenure was a golden period for the Indian economy. Even If you compare his 2009-14 tenure with Modi's 2014-19 tenure, you will find that India was in a much better condition than it was under modi in almost all aspects except 2 or 3. The industrial output was very high, the economy was much better(despite the 2012-13 and 2013-14 slowdown), the hunger index was quite less, primary education, healthcare, crime rate and many more; the UPA government was much better in than NDA. The reason Congress lost was because of all the scams that happened right under their noses and Rahul Gandhi's image wasn't exactly shining. He was a complete pappu without any knowledge of the issues of the country.
      Most of the policies made by the Modi govt were mediocre at best. Unplanned GST and Demonetization caused a huge downfall on our GDP and many small businesses were shut. Forget 2 crore new jobs per year, 1.1 crore jobs were lost in the financial year 2017-18; unemployment rate is now the worst since the last 45 years. Our rank in the hunger index is lower than underdeveloped countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh. The only reason Modi won the elections is because of his PR image and his godi media.
      Congress govt was bad, but the Modi govt is downright pathetic.

      The common man can't relate to him. Uneducated, regressive, very typical and cultural, most middle and even uneducated upper middle class without education and exposure, will not be able to relate to shashi tharoor.
      Many won't even understand his point of view or how he is of benefit to the country. He is logical and practical. He knows the policies, goals and mindsets of the west and South Asia, on a state level. He knows the sensibilities of the common man and professionals of politicians of both the west and India. He has been exposed to both.
      He can speak from different angles and perspectives but the majority of people will not be able to understand him. The majority of Indian people don't have his level of exposure. Most NRIs don't even have his level of exposure. You can't claim to have knowledge or exposure that you don't have. It's evident that he knows what he's talking about. He has clearly incorporated the best of both worlds.
      I've seen videos where people complained that he made India look bad on an international platform, when he was actually acknowledging the problems that do exist and problems that have been highlighted worldwide, which showed that he was speaking as a responsible politician who recognises the problems and wants a solution, instead of ignoring the question or justifying the issues like a coward.
      He makes India look good on an international platform. He knows how to talk to the western media and how to get his point across. He's educated, aware and intelligent enough to know the sensibilities of the people in the west.
      The average person doesn't get shashi tharoor. He has immense experience and understanding of real issues in South Asia. He gets to the root cause of issues and his solutions are practical. People like him cannot be understood by the common man or most Indians, NRIs, etc that lack education, exposure and political, foreign and diplomatic exposure to the west. He lived abroad and worked for the UN.
      Shashi tharoor is way ahead of other politicians in India. He is beyond the comprehension of an uneducated mind that lacks exposure, understanding and social skills.
      He is not forming his own party because he knows the sensibilities, lack of understanding, lack of education and exposure of the common man. Experience cannot be taught, mimicked or indoctrinated. He is experienced. He has a global mindset due to which his perspective differs from the common man. It's the vote of the common man that counts.
      The uneducated chai walla is a representative of the common man.

      karan is rite about freedom of speech
      shashi is also rite about the law and order issues which out weighs the benifit of sitting and enjoying a 3hour movie compared to mob violence. so for time being it has to be postponed and only after convincing the mob it has to be released. ..
      dont u think it is a very wise answer. and a very satisfying and diplomatic statement.
      ?

    • @JustGotALife
      @JustGotALife 7 лет назад

      Kaushik Ds yeah but not allowing people to exercise the freedom of expression in Democratic country is breaking the law and rules. Tharoor is willing to break that law and bend the rules because government can't handle mob like situation to occur or should I say don't want to spend money in security.
      It's not a about enjoying the movie it's about foundation of the country. If government itself bend down to few ppl then it sets the example that anybody can get away with anything in this country as long as you instill fear and gather bunch of ppl to perpetuate violence.

    • @TheKaushik96
      @TheKaushik96 7 лет назад

      of course u are correct about shashi willing to bend the rules. to avoid conflict which indirectly suggests the governments failure or inefficiency in controlling mob. but there is no other option available.
      coz as we all know they are politician and has to be nice to people.
      what would u have done if u are to be the decision maker in this issue.
      u can take side of film maker and release the movie
      or take side of angry mob and ban the movie
      put a wise and diplomatic end by postpoing the release and resolve the issue by then
      any other outside the box or innovative sollution.
      pls reply about ur opinion

    • @JustGotALife
      @JustGotALife 7 лет назад

      Nice to people doesn't mean you can allow them to break laws. If they break laws government has every right to take action . If there is no option that means all your taxpayer money is either going in waste or in someone's pocket.
      Let me give you an example, recently in US . A group called Antifa were not allowing conservative speakers to give speeches and conduct debates in major Universities. They would vandalize and smash the place Create chaos while school security sit there doing nothing. And when confronted unversity would say yeah but we can't do anything about it .This speeches make people go for safe spaces. So one the of the leading speaker complained in the Congress and then finally not able to counter his argument instead of investigating this group they push Berkely Univ to provided Ben with $600000 security. And they had to provide him .Atleast that was done.
      Regardless of what measures were taken important thing is freedom of speech was maintained and violence was annihilated.
      Similar steps could be taken by this government learning from this incident. The government has enough money to provide security and stop the mob. They just don't want to loose their pockets which contains our hard earned money.

    Well i stand with Karan Thapar views that in place of educating people or making them understand freedom of speech on which the very idea of democracy stands, we choose to curb it because its easy path to maintain law and order. In reply to Mr Sashi Tharoor saying that choosing between the lesser evil and tackling situation with lousy choice. I would like to say that when Socrates was awarded death penalty for expressing his view toward the very idea of an Ideal State. Plato and his other followers in some high position offered him escape using their connections, but he said that if i ran today, then the very principle for which i am standing would be defeated. He drank the poison. It is the principle which we have to maintain. For Shashi Tharoor, i always like him for his honesty and statesmanship, he admitted the disgraceful thing his party did in Salman Rushdie case and with Hussain. And its great to see Karan joining The Wire, this channel is going to be big in next upcoming years.

      I think this debate also exposed the weak moral ground of the politicians and today's politics which is opportunistic and unethical, unprincipled and often undemocratic. This signifies a moral degradation even in the best of the Western educated minds of the country leaving their education useless because they are not being acted upon.

      Max Elan unfortunately you are right but are we not postponing righteousness for temporary political games.. Bro look at the broader picture.. Problem is not with politics but the basic perpetuation of the same tendency even after being in power... That means they are dishonest all the time..

    • @setuchauhan6235
      @setuchauhan6235 7 лет назад +3

      @ Max Elan and Atul, I will like to add that the problem are not leaders but the public itself. Listen what Mr Tharoor said somewhere in interview by quoting Lord Macaulay that Indian are emotional people prone to taking offence and overreact and freedom of speech is very difficult to follow here. Britishers done extensive research over Indian people in order to make their rule firmly established. I feel fortunate enough to be one of few who don't know history of our by stories narrated by grandmother, father, uncle or some elder in our colony. I actually read it. Unfortunately most of the people here know history by the viewpoint and ideology which their families follow so it all got fucked up. We need educational reforms very urgently because we are moving toward dumbness day by day. Formal educated Man/Women is different that rational prudent man/women. Problem is that India follows different principle "Samjhdaari se badi Izzat hai" ( Satisfying ego is more important than proliferate rationality ). When Kiren rijiju tweeted that quote of Nostradamus (lol) that there will be one leader in pan Asia who will change history whatever. Firstly look at the level of his grasp in literature .. Nostradamus seriously ? so i was thinking that we should also post that "there is going to be a time when whole nation will go nuts". There is nothing we can do except trying to stay sane. Leaders are not Dishonest they are the reflection of our society.

      There is this uncomfortable truth that both failed to acknowledge. Before the movie is released the trailer has offended the Rajputs. The trailer which shows their beloved queen romancing with the invader, the very same invader to escape whom she killed herself in a pyre!. Think why the director who has already been manhandled in the sets of the movie, knowing very well how such an intro to the movie is going to vex the rajputs still goes ahead with this highly provocative trailer. An intellectual debate between two secular beings with no feelings or attachments, no pride or passion, will fail to note such subtle emotions

    Karan is a great interviewer.Those people complaining that Karan didn't let Shashi Tharoor speak should watch the interview once again. It took Shashi a great amount of effort to condemn the fact that Salman Rushdie was barred from addressing a session at Jaipur LitFest even via a teleconfrence link after being disallowed to physically attend the session. Shashi would have labelled it as an outright assault on freedom of expression had something similar in nature transpired in a non-Congress governed state. I am an admirer of Dr.Tharoor and a secualrist to the core, if one were to take an objective view of censorship in India then one is bound to arrive at the conclusion that all these years even Congress, the self-proclaimed vanguard of liberalism and civil liberties, has had a total disregard for freedom of expression at moments when it was required to uphold it. BJP's record in this matter has certainly been worse. Under BJP's rule militantism, be it cultural or religious, has been emboldenend to such an extent that an organization's hare brained opposition to a piece artistic freedom can earn it fame and recognition. If the Congress wants to make a comeback it should put its doublespeak on such matters to a rest, I say so because right wing's opposition to free speech is basically premised upon misdeeds that Congress committed in the past.

      @Jr26 S You resort to offensive name-calling, but I won't be as offensive when I say to you that you're perception of reality is < 1%. It is demonstrable by your failure to recognize the Free Will of Humans as the single-most powerful tool in the entire universe. Dictators, British Raj, Mughal Empire, Congress Raj, BJP Raj, etc., are all brought about by the quality of decision-making of the people. Acting to defend oneself and acting not to defend oneself are both one's own decisions.

    • @vanshgupta6268
      @vanshgupta6268 5 лет назад

      @@StudentOf10 with the aforementioned statement, what you are trying to say is that the people elect leaders that conform to the POPULAR AND MAJORITY BELIEFS, thereby INSINUATING that elected leaders REPRESENT THE COLLECTIVE CONSCIENCE of the society and therefore they would only mirror the society rather than bring about any positive change. THAT IS SO SO WRONG THAT IT MAKES ME CRINGE! AND I'll PROVE to you why YOU'RE WRONG with an IRREFUTABLE case in point- Abraham lincoln was the president of the united states of america at the time slavery was abolished under the emancipation proclamation. At that time, upwards of 80% black people were slaves under white people thereby conveying the popular belief. Had the people got the leader they deserved SLAVERY WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ABOLISHED !! BUT political leadership IS NOT about pandering to the popular beliefs, ITS ABOUT USING POWER TO EFFECT POSITIVE CHANGE TO THE SOCIETY. So dont throw around cool lines without understanding the context in which they are spoken. POWER IS TRANSFERRED FROM PEOPLE TO LEADERSHIP SO THEY CAN DO WHATS RIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE, EVEN IF THEY APPEAR TO NOT 'DESERVE' IT !

    Incredible incredible interview ! Highly intellectual, coherent, incisive, honest and contemplative from both sides! Mr. Tharoor defended his position to the best he could and made clear and completely valid arguments and so did Karan thapar. While Mr. Thapar was precise, shrewd, on point and might i say so, even CORRECT about EVERY POINT he made ESPECIALLY about the silence on part of both parties in condemning the actions of the riot and violence inciting religeous factions, for the sake of VOTE BANK, WHERE HE FAILED was in realising the REALISTIC SCENARIO of this country as was rightfully conveyed by Mr. Tharoor's argument, where he clearly conveyed that the choice the government had to make was between protecting freedom of speech and protecting the lives of innocent movie-goers, who might have become the victims of mob lynching even if government chose to provide extra security. So they chose the latter ! And even rightfully so, considering that even the best of security measures might not necessarily curb violence( just consider the protective detail that john kennedy had but he was still killed) SO ALL PROPS TO MR. THAROOR for making that argument. BUT, what the government and BOTH THE PARTIES should have done was DISAGREE, CONDEMN and CRITICISE THE VIOLENCE orchestrated by these factions and NOT PANDER to these psycho rioting factions FOR VOTE BANKS ! And both of them conveyed that clearly !! So, bothe winners !

    Freedom of expression is a terrible thing. It only shows creativity. Creativity is bad because it defies conformity. Creativity and freedom of expression belong to the disgusting secular culture which is not a culture at all. Culture is painting ambulances in saffron. Culture is mob violence. Culture is burning cinema halls. Our values should be chopping off noses and ears of women, threaten people of death if they make such bad films or draw Durga in nude or write fiction on Muhammad. Religious lunacy is the best thing. Democracy is bad. Liberalism is a sin. Secularism is a bad western influence. Education is also bad because western people brought this sort of irresponsible rational way of thinking which stops us from being morons. We must follow the great uneducated leader of ours, our great dictator- Narendra Bhai Modi and the good samaritan tadipaar Amit Shah. Why cry for freedom of expression? Soon you will have no freedom, thanks to Aadhaar.

      Suraj Dip, it's an impartial interviewer's job to play the Devil's Advocate. I don't know what Karan Thapar's personal views about many things are, but he's a pretty good interviewer. Idiot.

    If perception of people is all that matter superseding truths
    Then I personally believe that only British Raj could abolish SATI PRATHA as our elected representatives are more concerned with their own future by taking PEOPLE'S (MOB's) FAVORITE decision.

    • @dipanjandatta1689

      British raj would have done nothing had not Rammohan come forward to convince them about the banning of Sati Pratha. When Rammohan first raised the issue before the British they were reluctant to poke their nose into the affair. 99% credit goes to Rammohan Roy. Had the French ruled India instead of the British Rammohan Roy would have approached the French. The British took the credit and Rammohan's last days spent in neglect and poverty in Britain.

    My request to Indian Journalists, please don't ask a man like Shahhi Tharor on a trivial issue like this. He is a great thinker please take benefit from him and put forward other burning issues that we have in the sub-continent. Thanks. Love from Pakistan.

    • @franscientist
      @franscientist 6 лет назад +4

      mohammad ayaz khan freedom of free speech and expression is not really a trivial issue at all. It shows the mentality and social fabric of the entire Indian subcontinent. Our inability as a people to accept other people's views and thoughts and our tendency to get offended at imaginary slights is our biggest weakness as a culture.

    • @Ashnesss
      @Ashnesss 6 лет назад

      franscientist that's an issue of the subcontinent and south Asians in general. But because there is that issue and people lack critical thinking, logical reasoning and the ability to separate facts from fiction, public figures and anyone who's statement or conduct becomes vital, is subject to the immaturity of its audience.
      The majority of people are not educated enough to separate two different things or to comprehend something or what it is, without making conclusions. The common man does have pre conceived notions and prejudices.
      Where religion and culture is concerned, south Asians are too sensitive and cannot think outside of what they have been taught.
      Shashi tharoor can but he is bound and cannot express himself fully here. Should he speak as an author, politician or himself? And if he speaks as himself, his words will definitely be misconstrued and compared to the conduct of his party, because like I mentioned before, people cannot separate the two.
      Shashi tharoor has experience of both Asia and the west. He has had exposure. He knows the mindset, sensibilities and style of governance of both. That's how he can distinguish between the two and gauge the sensibilities and sometimes immaturity of local people. Personally, I'm sure that tharoor can watch padmavat and not be offended but to state that on national TV, will definitely be taken out of context and misconstrued.
      Educated people of Tharoors caliber have foresight, they can weigh the pros and cons of a certain decision and they can foresee the potential reactions and havoc. An uneducated mind that lacks exposure and awareness, can't do that.
      Most south Asians don't have the exposure that Shashi tharoor has, that's evident from their conduct, mindset and inability to foresee potential problems.
      Shashi knows what he's talking about.

    This is a really good discussion, which is pretty rare for any Indian News/TV debate discussion. In addition to both speakers having a very good command over the language, they also display really good articulation of their ideas! And for a change Karan Thapar isn't that irritating! :)

    Disappointed with Shashi Tharoor. Hate speech should be protected under free speech while threats shouldn't be. Freedom of expression should be absolute or else it's not freedom, it's as clear as night and day.

    The interviewer aka questioner is very smart in putting questions against answerer. It seems that Mr Karan Thapar somewhere knew the answers that were going to be followed, he came prepared and nailed it totally. On the other hand, Mr Shashi Tharoor answered it very smartly and smoothingly. Such is the grace of both of them.
    From talking about Padmavati to discussing characters of all the politicians and the Parties they belong to, they did it very well and Yess Dosti a bank rahe at the end :D
    It twas fun watching it, literally.

    Shashi Tharoor puts up a poor defence of free speech here. Once you set the precedent that the government will seek to avoid law and order issues by stifling the speaker and not the mob, the mob has every incentive to get outraged and demonstrate their 'strength'.

    Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie was banned in India. The government at that time was afraid of Muslim mobs going wild.
    Don't meddle with people's feelings and start a discussion when mobs run wild. Bored with all these yukky issues.
