In an interview on what 75 years of Independence means for India, the author, historian and Congress MP, Shashi Tharoor, has said we are all to collectively blame for the bigotry and polarization that is spreading in the country but South India could be a beacon of hope for the future. However, Shashi Tharoor believes and hopes that Prime Minister Modi could step-in and reverse this trend towards majoritarianism and Hindutva nationalism if he realizes that he can win elections without policies that polarize the country. Mr. Tharoor argues that Mr. Modi’s handling of the Nupur Sharma episode gives him reason for hope.

I live in Chennai, we (In TN) never discussed anything about other persons religion or cost. We all work together and look for the future and growth. I am sure, very soon, the whole India will see the same way and build the great country!

As a multicultural, multiethnic society, India has reached a privileged viewpoint on human relations. I hope that Indians get to understand the phase of humanity, at the edge of space exploration. Most dominant nations have been mono ethnic and mono culture societies. India´s rise would be a definite plus for the entire human race, as we reach the physical limits of earth´s carrying capacity. India needs further economic development. It is the only way to defeat the terrible legacy of caste and poverty. India must invest on its youth, its most valuable resource. Failing to do so will open a whole lot of opportunities for India´s enemies to destroy it.

I am a Keralite like Shashi Tharoor. Although I do have respect for his linguistic skills and some aspects of Historical knowledge, there are plenty of things he says that I disagree with. India under Modi is still a work in progress and there is scope for improvement. It is not perfect by any means. However, this notion that there is a rise in bigotry and intolerance is wrong. A sense of national pride and calling out to those who attack and harm India's cultural heritage and Universal values should not be seen as promoting "Hinduvta". The real bigots and hypocrites are those in the Congress Party themselves. They cannot stand Modi's rise in power and it does not sit well with their dynasty politics. They have failed to understand India's sentiments as a whole and how out of touch they are with the masses. There is not a single alternative solution they are providing except to tarnish the opposition party's image. To say that Modi appeals to only the North Indian belt is also incorrect. With the exception of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Modi is quite well accepted throughout South India. Even in Kerala, people are not overlooking the fact that despite their issues with Modi, he is a visionary leader.
Gandhiji's approach to dealing with religious tensions within India was highly controversial (to the point of favouring one group's barbaric acts/ideologies over the Universal values of India's vision of spirituality). This coupled with Nehru's errors that paved the way for Indo-China war (as Tharoor himself admits) were all harmful for our nation. All these are coming to light as well. India is a peace loving nation and has been accommodating people of all walks and backgrounds. However, how long can we put up with those that pose a threat to our nation, both internally and externally? A country's safety and security are at stake. Some hard decisions and actions need to be taken. To twist that around to say that the present Indian government under Modi is acting like the counterpart of Nazi Germany is both outrageous and a blatant lie. India is getting stronger under a particular government. So obviously you get people inside our country and foreign press who wish to suppress us since their vested interests are under threat. We should not fall for that tactic.

This interview is a prime example of two people living in denial of ground realities and conjuring up some fantasy world. It is this preconceived notion of certain groups and people that is at the heart of the problem. Usage of polished language, idioms and posh accents do not always mean that they are intelligent or even sensible. On the other hand, someone may use a local vernacular to convey something that is straight and an honest representation of what is going around. That is what matters at the end of the day. Besides, to generalise a particular group as being intelligent and non-intelligent is just a reflection of your own personal biases and preconceived thoughts. No group is sacrosanct in terms of intelligence and moral values by default.

Enjoyed this conversation, a very good interview, a few points
    1. Enjoyed the fact that both the gentleman are generally Congress supporters, but still spoke both about good and bad of Nehru
    2. India has changed, people have become more orthodox on their religious beliefs because of local and international events, but you can’t compare the fact with Amar Akbar Anthony which is purely fiction against a Kashmir Files.
Bottom line, if countries like US/UK had same population and multi religion population like India, they would be worse off than India and would not be able to manage the county. So kudos to India to manage the country it has and should be proud of it.
