I like the savage Leo and the tiger the most. Its a great blend of MOTU and TMNT. These unproduced toy videos are always so interesting. I think it would be cool to do an episode on toy mysteries that haven't been solved or have just recently solved. It's crazy that it took until 2020 to crack the mystery of Wonderbread He-Man. How many other toys have so much mystery surrounding them?
Spectorcreative did a video on the heman wonderbread thing very good and then pixel dan just picked one up and that story checks out 🤓 i would need to bring something new to the table 🤔 if i would do a new one
Good stuff. That MOTU robot is particularly quaint. The gorilla Double Pretender did end up getting released...in a way...at Botcon 2015. The shell was actually a new sculpt designed after the prototype and there were two redeco Transformers inside. He was given the name "Oilmaster". Great video, Ed!
I have the version of the gorilla double pretender created for Botcon. He's cool, but I can see why they didn't actually produce the Double Pretenders it would of been a LOT of material for very simplistic figures, at a time when the toyline's profits were already waning.
Exactly the end of the G1 toy line was the death knell for the double pretenders. I have always assumed that the development never got beyond the design for the shells and existing pretenders inner figures were used for test purposes to work out the inner space required.
Also, that action feature for that unreleased Thundercats toy would be used later for Transformers a few decades later for Soundwave and Blaster to launch "cassettes" so it wasn't fully lost to time.
Yea...seems to be A LOT of them and what else...what else???? Oh U got it! I'll be a giant beetle lookin thing with like machine gun ammo or somethin...Bet there's a few of them lol
Never even heard of the "Warriors of the Forgotten Sewer" toy line from playmates. I was at that 1996 Botcon, The Hasbro Rep stated that The Pretenders would have been Optimus and Megatron, but no art existed that he knew of for the Inner Robot(s).
@@EdsRetroGeekOut Yeah it was my first convention as a kid. So much fun. The Hasbro Rep was also a HUGE fan so he mingled well with us. But apparently He got fired after his time there because Hasbro felt he gave to much information away (honestly he didn't say anything revealing at all, he had great fan interaction balanced with proper cooperate tight lipped) and all I got out of him was he really hoped to bring a long gone G1 toy back into Beast Wars. I saw he was clearly eyeing a MINT in Box Jetfire and I said "oh you mean Jetfire?" He paused realizing I saw what he was eyeing and he said "Well theirs alot of possibilities for Beast wars I'd like to see happen" And that was it. I didn't press him because even though I was a kid I knew about job security even then. And I recall saying well if so that would be cool. I liked Jetfire as a kid, and the fact he crashed landed into Earth would work great with the story line if the Maximals found him. But again since this was mid 90's and Companies still didn't fully understand that Fanbase interaction was a good thing, and anything outside of directly prepared speeches could get you fired. :/ I and other fans found out at Botcon 97 he was let go and where sad to hear that. His Replacements tired to walk a line of being open to fans but saying nothing, and yet because the internet is great for leaks even way back in 1997, everyone knew almost all the toys they had to display. "How do you guys know this" "Internet" Heh.
Since one of the shells was supposed to be used for Cerebros, chances are good the spider one was going to come with a larger Zarak body. The ape by the way was named Oilmaster.
I hope that the MotU Evil Robot will come in the new Masters of the Universe Origins line from Mattel and the Red Eye could be revealed in the Thundercats line by Super7 in the future ... i'll keep my fingers crossed !!!
The way LJN did their toyline for ThunderCats was so interesting. Almost 100% divorced from influencing the cartoon, they really just did random things and produced one-off characters while leaving main characters without toys whatsoever.
A few I remember as a kid; Jurassic Park Dino Hunters: Scrap Davis Real Ghostbusters: Egon's Lab Darkwing Duck: Series 2, which basically finished out the majority of the DW characters, specifically Gizmo Duck and the Fearsome Five. I DESPERATELY wanted these as a kid.
yeah, in any case they should have made the same character and it's concept by working with the MOTU mold instead of recycling something from another line.
It was real common to repurpose existing toys into a new toy line, hell the first 2 years of Transformers were basically just toys from various japanese toy lines sorted into the competing groups , given new names and backstories.
I wish they made a real sound wave recorder that would really play tapes. I have a lot of music on tape. And a real baster boom box. I've wanted one of them sense high school. I wish someone would pass it on to make both of them for real. From the sledgemaster (owner of the only and first 100 pound sledgehammer in the world).
I freaking love Pretenders, they’re such an oddity but man they’re beautiful in hand especially the Decepticon pretenders(I currently only have those atm) Even better when they’re in good condition. It’s still possible to get the gorilla Double pretender, as the TF Subscription service made two of them, both red and black. I only have the Megatron variant but that’s just a recolor of the Grand Maximus pretender shell BUT that was a Japanese exclusive back in the 80s, so it still has some awesome charm to own one. Would recommend checking eBay to those who are looking for these!
The double pretender gorilla was eventually sold, using a new mold, at Botcon. The red armoured one was Optimus Prime, while the grey gorilla was a Decepticon.
I'm a Transformer fan, so those Pretenders peeked my interest. For the record, Pretenders were portrayed very differently in the East and West. In America, the Pretenders were often shown to be smaller than normal transformers. This allowed the Autobots to masquerade as normal humans, especially to Decepticons who were new to Earth. The Decepticons specifically chose to assume monster appearances to terrify humans, but to avoid identification as Decepticons. Basically, attacks would be blamed on monsters which the Autobots would presumably ignore in favor of tracking down "real" Decepticons. In said portrayal, the shells were controlled by the inner robots. In contrast, the Japanese versions were more or less human sized while their "shells" were active, but their shells vanished and they assumed normal Transformer size when assuming robot form. The robots and the shells never worked side by side to my knowledge.
A gorilla double Pretender shell was eventually produced by the Transformers collectors club. The brown and gray one was a Decepticon named Oilmaster. The one in the red armor was sold as double Pretender Optimus Prime.
@@EdsRetroGeekOut If you ever plan to do a sequel video, there are tons of candidates for unreleased toys. GoBots, Rock Lords, Mantech, Centurions. Transformers recently released a Decepticon jet name Sandstorm which was inspired by an unreleased toy from the 1990s. tfwiki.net/wiki/Sandstorm_(G2)
When i was young,... I was in K-mart , in Montana. ( Montana would get Canadian exclusives sometimes ), anyhow,.... I've never seen it again. nobody believes it even existed. there was 3 or more on the shelf and too expensive for my family.
Very interesting about the MOTU robot. Saw the prototype photo before, did not know it was a reused sculpt. Hmm...wondering what other reused sculpts for other toyline with minimal tooling and just new paint would fit into the line if it continued. MOTU - most recycled toyline in the universe.

The Evil Robot doesn't look like it would fit in with the MOTU Universe.
