I see no reason why they would change their support schedule just because they changed their CPU. In fact now that Apple is in control of their chips, they are updating their machines more often. This means many more Mac models will need to be checked to run on their latest OS's (ie. more work for them). Regardless. Even by some huge miracle they extend support to 7 years (won't happen), The M1 will still be end of life'd two years before the M3 does. We all have different requirements, If you place no value on that. Great. save a few bucks and enjoy. For me the savings don't out weigh 2 years less of life, let alone all the other improvements you get.

For most people, if you can afford it, I would just recommend getting the M3 Air as that's the latest and will last the longest. For someone like me who already has a M1 Air, at least for me, it is very hard to justify upgrading as this machine still runs so fast.

M3 perf advantage irrelevant to 99% of users. The real issue is that you can't order a 16GB M1 from Walmart. So, anyone who likes to have a lot of web tabs open will find it runs out of memory. The memory limitation definitely impacts "normal" users just with browsers. I actually prefer the M1 chassis and speakers. But it would have to be a 16GB version, which I guess you can now only get when it's available on the outlet.

In my experience, over 25 tabs for extended periods on an 8GB MacBook can be a problem. It can depend on the tabs in question. A single RUclips tab can be 350MB-plus. 50 tabs and you're toast.
@@AzinFiro That probably helps. The problem is managing multiple browsers across lots of devices, both Mac and PC etc. Chrome is in some ways terrible, but I end up using it for that reason. Four times better battery life is a bit silly, though. The battery life is better with Safari, but not nearly 4x better.

Here in Japan, many RUclipsrs compare these machines by showing their screens directly (not scores). They run the same MacOS and applications, and check their responses and time consuming. You can easily identify the differences. In conclusion, no much different between M1 and M3 when they are with the same 8GB, big difference between 8GB vs 16GB. M1 16GB mostly beats M3 8GB. M3's improvements can be identified more easily when it is with 16GB. These facts are far more important.
I thought I could handle only 8GB of RAM when I picked up an M1 Air for only $750 last year. Turns out I was wrong. I’m very frequently utilizing swap which is detrimental to SSDs since they have a limited number of writes. I finally decided to jump for the M3 Air in the 512/16 config. Looking forward to using it. Honestly the biggest gripe I have about these new Apple silicon Macs is the inability to upgrade memory and storage space. You really have to plan ahead with what you purchase up front.
Your iPhone can be used as the webcam and microphone on the M1 using “Continuity Camera”. I’d recommend using the money saved to get a better monitor. A widescreen 34” is equivalent to dual 27”’s.

And even for Macs that do have TB4 ports, they don’t have “better performance”, only additional features that were optional with TB3, like dual displayport links. TB3 equipped Macs always reached the same 40Gbit/s.

My best friend still loves the M1 MacBook Air that I sold her, when I upgraded to an M2 Max. It’s still running good as new. I outgrew it, but all she does is web browsing email and video calls, so it’s still perfectly adequate for her.
Still rocking my m1 ... it kicks ass as a light weight developer machine ... provided you're not doing a lot of containerised workloads. Best laptop ever made in my opinion, and I've been through a ton.
Recently got a macbook air m1 16gb/512gb for 650 euros A steal compared to the m3! Add a better powerbrick (gan of 67w) and a thermal-pad mod (I run in energy saving mode when mobile anyway, so no burned legs). And I basically have close to an M3 for half the money.

I am a photographer and teacher and I’m going travelling next year in a van through Europe! My MacBook Pro is starting to lose battery strength and basic Lightroom use drains the battery. Working on the go with my photography, I don’t know will this be practical! Would you advise trading up for the MacBook Air M1? My own is pre M chip so I don’t know what to expect! M1 Air is still quite powerful, but to get better future proofing, you should go for atleast M2 Air. I won't recommend the M1 Air now. moreover now that you will use Apple silicon for the first time, you will be blown away by especially the battery life and how cool it remains in everyday tasks. I am a Computer Science Engineer and also use it for Photo and Video editing on Adobe software.

The M3 is using a new smaller 3nm chip. It's like a version 1! Just like how the M2 is an improved version of the M1. So I think the M4 with more cores will obviously be a step up, working out the bugs of the M3 (over-heating?). So, skip the M3!
M3 isn’t overheating. This dude messed up as he reasoned lower voltages were an indication of throttling. They aren’t as the M3 chip is 3nm and doesn’t require as high a voltage. The M3 runs tests @ 30% lower voltage, slightly lower temps at 20% higher performance over the M2. I like the channels but this dude makes a lot of mistakes.
My new M3 Air's Geekbench 6 CPU score was almost double my 2019 iMac 3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 with Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB However when I ran the GPU test my i9 scored 49996 in the OpenCL test, while my M3 scored 31827. That does not make sense to me. Is the i9’s Pro Vega that much better than the M3’s video?? Metal scores were even worse for the M3 at 49285 vs 73292 for the i9. What gives?
I'm a backend developer where i run simualtions of thousands of users using our software. I had a m2 pro but it was second hand, now using the m1 air, that i got stock of. There isnt any difference to my work really, there are other limitations that can factor and you need to know all of them before signling down issues to just one things

I move from low end laptop like amd a4 9125 and try macbook m1. Is crazy fast for swap swap or snap snap. If before u use intel i9 maybe macbook m3 is best one. But for me m1 is still one of the best
Have you noticed that the webcam on the M3 fits exactly into its own bezel at the top? Why have a notch if it fits? Its the only reason I didn't get the M3. Its bad design language from a company that has truly phenomenal design normally.
I was all Apple a few years ago but for "reasons" i stopped. (just kept phone and ipad) Currently running iPhone 13 and recently upgraded from iPad Air (gen4) to M2 iPad pro. In the past i had the MB Air and 27" iMac. I wanted to get back into Apple computers. Considered the Mac Mini but decided to get a refurb base model M2 MB Air. Currently expected delivery is tomorrow. I quit windows years ago (run AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and AMD Radeon 6750xt with Fedora 39 Linux) Was a big gamer but not so much anymore. Linux can game when i have the urge but I am also liking the simpler games in Apple Arcade. Main computer use now is Video/surfing/budget tasks. Also study (language learning)

I remember that they used to show TV adverts for TVs, but since you were watching the TVs on your own TV, it meant that your own TV was good enough. When you play macbook speakers on a youtube video, it is only going to be as good as the speakers you have already.
I bought my Mac Air M1 in 2020, which is still worth it. I use my M1 for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web browsing, developing software, and occasionally to play Asphalt 9...Of course, it begins to look a little bit slower in comparison to M3 but it is good enough. My battery life is 88 % I gonna wait 2 or 3 years more before shifting it, regards !!!

Fair opinion. No more "just browsing and watching 4K video", because Intel N100 is capable to do that, it's extremely cheap, you can get less than $150 for 16GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD. For my needs, 16GB model will be future proof, just like my M1 MBA 16GB of RAM.

Of course it is it’s got mag safe, a bigger better screen dual display support, much better performance especially in graphics, better battery life and will get support for 2-3 years longer than the M1. Now if your budget is topping out at $700 then the M1 is still bit of a no brainer but I would go refurbished or 2nd hand at that point and save another couple hundred bucks.
Doubt they will last 10 years like some of the older vintage macs like my 2008 laptop that amazingly still runs. Something will go forcing you to replace it.
There is no indication of that after 3.5 years. I have an early M1, and it is as good as it was on day one with still 98% battery. ARM architecture is likely to be more resilient than older tech, as smartphones and tablets have proven.
I own a M1 air but the LCD screen is flickering (basically it’s broke and I didn’t do anything to it), it still works but without an external monitor it’s a useless machine. No way I’m spending 400 dollars to replace the LCD screen. So I’m kinda in the dark what to do with my M1 air, ATM I can use my external monitor and use it like a desktop computer (how long will I tolerate this I don’t know) but its a laptop and it defeats the purpose of being a laptop.

In fact, the vast majority of people dont even use 50% power of M1 Air. And if you grab M3 Max you dont get 3x time more speed in most of the tasks.

I dont know how much is too much, I work around with 50 tabs with 8 gigs of ram 2017 base Macbook Pro.

They are not thunderbolt 4 ports. You made the same mistake in the last video too
And even for Macs that do have TB4 ports, they don’t have “better performance”, only additional features that were optional with TB3, like dual displayport links. TB3 equipped Macs always reached the same 40Gbit/s.

My best friend still loves the M1 MacBook Air that I sold her, when I upgraded to an M2 Max. It’s still running good as new. I outgrew it, but all she does is web browsing email and video calls, so it’s still perfectly adequate for her.
What the difference in the screens? Is the M3 much better as far as brightness and screen image/colors goes?

Still rocking my m1 ... it kicks ass as a light weight developer machine ... provided you're not doing a lot of containerised workloads. Best laptop ever made in my opinion, and I've been through a ton.

Hey there Max! Absolutely loved this video! I have a 2018 MacBook Pro 16gb 256 SSD which has served me very well. I am a photographer and teacher and I’m going travelling next year in a van through Europe! My MacBook Pro is starting to lose battery strength and basic Lightroom use drains the battery. Working on the go with my photography, I don’t know will this be practical! Would you advise trading up for the MacBook Air M1? My own is pre M chip so I don’t know what to expect! M1 Air is still quite powerful, but to get better future proofing, you should go for atleast M2 Air. I won't recommend the M1 Air now. moreover now that you will use Apple silicon for the first time, you will be blown away by especially the battery life and how cool it remains in everyday tasks. I am a Computer Science Engineer and also use it for Photo and Video editing on Adobe software.

Would you get apple care for an M1 today, is it worth it? Im facing this exact choice and its is future proofing that leads me to the M1 actually. Apple has allowed word out that they will bring OLED to their macbook like in 2026 (for the pro) and the air in 2027. Whatever that future macbook looks like is going to change a lot, so a reasonable gap filler for me is the M1

it's about 3.5x better overall if you're talking about raw specifications and performance.
A lot, Intel CPUs weren't very good.
Battery doesn't take over an hour on the M1. It takes about an hour. Battery still last all day.
The M3 is using a new smaller 3nm chip. It's like a version 1! Just like how the M2 is an improved version of the M1.
So I think the M4 with more cores will obviously be a step up, working out the bugs of the M3 (over-heating?). So, skip the M3!
M3 isn’t overheating. This dude messed up as he reasoned lower voltages were an indication of throttling. They aren’t as the M3 chip is 3nm and doesn’t require as high a voltage. The M3 runs tests @ 30% lower voltage, slightly lower temps at 20% higher performance over the M2. I like the channels but this dude makes a lot of mistakes.
I would skip the m4 to be fair, because I’m sure the m5 will be better

My new M3 Air's Geekbench 6 CPU score was almost double my 2019 iMac 3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 with Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB
However when I ran the GPU test my i9 scored 49996 in the OpenCL test, while my M3 scored 31827. That does not make sense to me. Is the i9’s Pro Vega that much better than the M3’s video?? Metal scores were even worse for the M3 at 49285 vs 73292 for the i9. What gives?
I'm a backend developer where i run simualtions of thousands of users using our software. I had a m2 pro but it was second hand, now using the m1 air, that i got stock of. There isnt any difference to my work really, there are other limitations that can factor and you need to know all of them before signling down issues to just one things

So it only got 5 to 6 years of OS renewals and the security updates were about 8 years. So how many years left does the M1 Macbook Air have left for OS renewals? Not sure how long my iMac 27" will go on working for after the security updates finish later this year? I only use the computer for internet browsing FerrariChat, RUclips, Ebay, Facebook and IG. Perhaps my as new iMac 27", which has a great display, will be okay for my uses for a while yet?

I’m hitting the memory wall with 8gb in Photoshop. It just can’t handle decently large images. Waiting for the M3 Mac Studios now. May opt for an M2 Studio if prices drop and will up it to 1tb for the faster SSD.
Adobe and other creator devs advise a minimum of 16GB but recommend 32GB for photo and video editing. This applies to Windows machines as well.

My current dilemma is I am getting my second MacBook as a responsible adult. My first one was almost ten years ago. A 2013 15inch MacBook Pro 8gb and 512 storage in film school. I did not know anything about it in film school back then, but my college only operated with Macintosh.
I maxed out the ram and storage year after year until it wrecked itself in 2016 the complete broke itself physically (the battery burst and the trackpad cracked out).
I learned so much from this experience. Pay more now or pay twice later, but being a college student back then, I rarely had money.
I am getting back into digital arts "slowly". I own a iMac at home I use for general everyday task. For my laptop to purchase, I am looking at a M2 or M3 16Ram and 1TB or a M1 Pro 16Ram and 1TB.
Thoughts on helping me choose for the long run? I also understand no technology stays forever, but I am looking to get atleast 4-5 years out of this.

the m1 mba has been out gor 4 years already since it was produced in 2024, its also discontinued due to the release of the m3, while the m1 is still reliable the m3 will be supported for longer.

Have you noticed that the webcam on the M3 fits exactly into its own bezel at the top? Why have a notch if it fits? Its the only reason I didn't get the M3. Its bad design language from a company that has truly phenomenal design normally.

I bought my Mac Air M1 in 2020, which is still worth it. I use my M1 for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web browsing, developing software, and occasionally to play Asphalt 9...Of course, it begins to look a little bit slower in comparison to M3 but it is good enough. My battery life is 88 % I gonna wait 2 or 3 years more before shifting it, regards !!!

I have a M1 Pro MBP and a M3 MBA. M3 is very very capable! And is very much on par with the M1 Pro Chip. The Air only falls off in more demanding tasks (to be expected)
Love the wedge shape of my M1. The average user will not notice a performance difference between the two. They will notice an extra $400 in their pocket. M1 hands down.
M3 will get much morr resale value and will be 100% supported by updates in the future, thats worth 400usd for me. Also better webcam and sound quality for video calls. Got the m3

Fair opinion. No more "just browsing and watching 4K video", because Intel N100 is capable to do that, it's extremely cheap, you can get less than $150 for 16GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD.
For my needs, 16GB model will be future proof, just like my M1 MBA 16GB of RAM.

2014 intel macbook pro user the M1 8GB blows it out of water unfortunatly but fortunatly for ppl new its the best laptop for the bang for the bucks.
Of course it is it’s got mag safe, a bigger better screen dual display support, much better performance especially in graphics, better battery life and will get support for 2-3 years longer than the M1. Now if your budget is topping out at $700 then the M1 is still bit of a no brainer but I would go refurbished or 2nd hand at that point and save another couple hundred bucks.

Doubt they will last 10 years like some of the older vintage macs like my 2008 laptop that amazingly still runs. Something will go forcing you to replace it.
There is no indication of that after 3.5 years. I have an early M1, and it is as good as it was on day one with still 98% battery. ARM architecture is likely to be more resilient than older tech, as smartphones and tablets have proven.
@ahaimes6320 Till the nand fails none of it is replaceable at least you could swop out the ram and hard drives on older tech.
I own a M1 air but the LCD screen is flickering (basically it’s broke and I didn’t do anything to it), it still works but without an external monitor it’s a useless machine. No way I’m spending 400 dollars to replace the LCD screen. So I’m kinda in the dark what to do with my M1 air, ATM I can use my external monitor and use it like a desktop computer (how long will I tolerate this I don’t know) but its a laptop and it defeats the purpose of being a laptop.
Buy an cheap ass Intel MacBook for 100 bucks or less, transform it into a Linux machine or a ChromeBook, then cast the M1’s screen to it on the go
