      I think you just supposed that to be true rather than having found any evidence ~ because it isn't true.
      pussy (n.2)
      slang for "female pudenda," by 1879, but probably older; perhaps from Old Norse puss "pocket, pouch" (compare Low German puse "vulva"), or perhaps instead from the cat word (see pussy (n.1)) on the notion of "soft, warm, furry thing;" compare French le chat, which also has a double meaning, feline and genital. Earlier uses are difficult to distinguish from pussy (n.1), e.g.:
      The word pussie is now used of a woman [Philip Stubbes, "The Anatomie of Abuses," 1583]

    • @MannyBrum
      @MannyBrum 9 месяцев назад +120

      It's attested in 1879 in that sense, though it wasn't probably used in a vulgar sense much before that because from the 1500s to the early 1800s it was widely used as a term of endearment for a woman. After it began to be used as a term for genitalia, using it to refer to a woman was seen as highly offensive.

Along with songs like this, 1920s/30s dirty blues, many sea shanties, 19th century folksongs like those in Randolph's Ozark collections, and drinking songs back through the Middle Ages and beyond certainly put Megan The Stallion in perspective.

    It's easy to make a mistake and think that the old days were also innocent days. This little ditty followed hot on the heels of the Roaring 20s, which weren't tame times at all. 100 years ago people had their minds on the same things we do now, except they were more elegant about it. The art of innuendo, so that something works on two levels, is not dead, thankfully. I immediately thought of the 1970s sitcom, Are You Being served, featuring endless gags about Mrs Slocombe's pussy. I love the way the refined vocal here goes into a p*ssed up growl near the end!

    And every evening we get set
    I stroke it every chance I get"
    The fact that I'm waiting for the line that ends "wet" shows he knew EXACTLY what he was doing.

    I have a version of this song performed by Robert Crumb. I always assumed it was written by him. What a surprise to find out it's a vintage song!

      R Crumb has a huge collection of old 78's, this record is likely in there.

      @@alukuhito : The very one. He also hates rock and roll, ironically since his art graced some classic rock albums by artists like Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead.

    My dad would be born 5 years after this song was released. Daddy was a bad boy, so I'm willing to bet he heard this on an oldies station in his youth, lol!

    So all those old people who accused us young folks of listening to dirty lyrics were total hypocrites.

      Yes and no. This was the exception not the rule. Also, today's lyrics and the people writing them are human waste. Much more to complain about.
