I used to watch her TV show because they played this at the end of every show, I love it, but it is an earworm, it gets in your head and won't stop, and the production is fantastic.
YOU ARE SO RIGHT! I dove deep into this song a few weeks ago and for many nights, it played in my mind while I slept. Earworm indeed! I lost so much sleep but I love this song regardless.
This song was in my mind this morning at work, i had to look it up on youtube,. I actually thought it was by Cyndi Lauper, always get those two mixed up. /Great song, definite earworm!
Kirsty MacColl wrote and performed this at 16 years old. Tracey covers it really well, I think. She keeps it real and actually sings it a bit cleaner. Here's the link to the original... which I absolutely love! ruclips.net/video/ACa4TlVod_w/видео.htmlsi=PXNtdwYiGGGV62V6
I have been following her career since 83, and I proudly display her Vinyl record "you broke my heart in 17 places" next to my record player. I appreciate her even more since I saw her on Larry David's Curb show. But the true credit must go to Kirsty McColl, who wrote this song and gave a first rate interpretation.
I liked Tracy Ullman , she was very witty and funny. I remember this video. I thought it was very good and we got a surprise Paul McCartney cameo at the end. God wow 1983!
I know that it has been said before, but even though Tracey is wonderfully brilliant in this classic rendition, it is Kirsty's backing vocals that brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it. Tracey has said many times that she was unable to hit the 'Baby' note and Kirsty's voice was used. In fact, if you listen to Kirsty's original you would be hard pressed not to feel that the vocal was lifted directly from it. MacColl, in my mind, wrote the perfect single with this masterpiece. Apparently, she spent ages crafting it into what we have here. It is the manner in which her minor key vocals contrast with Ullman's that makes me so sad when thinking about the manner in which she was killed, and the ensuing injustice.
@@CaptainDarrick The songwriter, Kirsty MacColl, was killed in a tragic act of a criminal nature that was never met with proper judicial action. In December 2000, she was on vacation in Mexico with her two young sons, in an area reserved for swimming and diving only. A speeding boat came through just as they were rising to the surface of the water. Kirsty pushed her sons out of the way but was struck and killed instantly. The boat belonged to a wealthy Mexican businessman, and some eyewitnesses believed it was he who was at the helm, speeding through were craft are not allowed. An employee of his claimed he was driving, possibly being paid for taking the rap. An insignificant fine was assessed based on his poor financial status and he did no jail time. The Justice for Kirsty organization was founded by her mother, Jean, and while they did get some concessions from the Mexican government, no proper justice was ever given. Kirsty herself had released "They Don't Know" a few years before Tracey's version, but its success was undermined by a strike in the record industry in Britain, no actual records being produced to sell in the stores. She worked on a few songs with Tracey in the early 80s, and had greater success as a solo artist later, on top of her appearance with The Pogues in the famous "Fairytale of New York" duet with Shane MacGowan, in 1987.
each version is in a different key, nothing could be used from one to the other, if rumor is true then KM re-sang the high part in studio for this version however there is a fairly recent vid of TU doing this live and she hits the note effortlessly
@bondgirl6952 yes all the way through, you can clearly hear that the 'baby:" in the middle IS kirsty. I'm talking about recognised historical fact here...
I noticed at one point how great the backing vocals are!! I have affection for Tracey though who suited the song with her voice and she did all sorts of other things like acting/comedy.

The amazing comedian who also happens to be an incredible singer....and oh by the way brought us The Simpsons! You can't help but smile whenever you see her!
Perhaps the best cover of all time! Up there with Dancing In The Streets, You Really Got Me and I Will Always Love You. Sadly, Kirsty's original ran into distribution problems, but thankfully it got a second life thru this version.
The Simpsons. Anno 2021 loopt de show die uit die filmpjes voortkwam nog altijd op televisie met een grotendeels ongewijzigde cast van stemacteurs.
They must not have a sense of humor in the Netherlands. It's too funny, the look in her eyes as she pitches and he doesn't swing at all. Love this song.
Did the backing girls sing at all on the recording or was Kirsty in the studio with Tracey? I Much LIKE They Don't Know! Hadn't heard it for years until 2021. This video I'd not seen until today.
I think the original recording was by Kirsty. They just took her lead vocal off and put Tracey's on. These two girls probably did not sing on the record at all. They did sing on her second album though.
@@JamesThomson-gj9nv No they remade it entirely with different musicians Kirsty producing ( I think) and doing all the backing vocals. Tracey's version of "Terry" used Kirsty's original track.
Dont agree. Tracey sings it far better. Don't know what the issue is. Even if Kirsty wrote it she (Tracey) would have got permission to cover it and made it a success. No need to put Tracey down.
Tracy in the early 1980s was super cute back then. Funny comedian and very cute looking woman.
No longer cute?
HAD A CRUSH ON TRACEY ULLMAN 1983

She was so damn cute!

This is her best song.! I really like how she uses her talent to do this song in her other videos. Go Girl.

It’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious .

Not her song. She never had the talent to write her own music but did have a terrific talent of ruining other peoples songs.

I fancied Tracey so much. As did my schoolmates.
The perfect pop song!
It is !!!
one of the best melodies I ever heard. In the states we LOVED her in "curb"--(by the genius Larry David).
Written & originally recorded by the late Kirsty McColl... ...she of "Fairy Tale of New York" fame...
