Sublime - Santeria Guitar Lesson (Tab on Screen)

- Guitar tutorial for Santeria by 90's ska/punk band Sublime with tablature on screen. Besides the main parts this lesson also includes the intro, outro, solo and second chorus guitar part.
This is a great reggae track for the intermediate rock guitarist. The verse is a I - III - VIm - V progression in E major. The second chord, a so-called 'secondary dominant', is nicely addressed in the solo as well.

How long did it take you
@@oofmaker3117 how long did it take you?
@@j.tsessions3132 it depends on how long you’ve been playing but the solo took about a day or two for me to master. i got all the notes one day slept on it and the next day practiced the tempo and i got it.
The solo is easy scales. I can’t get the rhythm my pick hand sux
@@OakLawnSpeedShop that's what I'm saying lol the solo is easier to me than the other parts lol
Unequivocally the best lesson ever. I've been playing a long time and needed to learn this for someone for an open mic night. What would have taken me a half hour took me five minutes because of this lesson. There is no better RUclips teaching style out there.
I’d learn this….. but I don’t practice Santeria
And I don't got no crystal ball

Can you do chica me tipo?
What is the fingering for the g# in the intro? I can’t get it and from looking at yours it makes no sense you don’t have a finger on the second string, which is used in the (456 45) phrase. Help!!!
Hi Chris, no worries, great question! That G# at 0:20 is played as a a 'barre' chord, which means my index finger is barring across all 6 strings on the 4th fret, primarily focusing its pressure on the high and low E strings as well the B string, making that arpeggiated part possible. Just do a youtube search on barre chords and there should be plenty of videos explaining it a bit better than I can here. Make sure to give it some time as they're not all that comfortable to play at first, and pay close attention to the position of your wrist and thumb, as those are key in getting your index finger to stretch all the way across. Good luck!

Damn I had already learned the solo but the video I watched it on was much harder to understand. I’m a visual learner and like have the tab and you taught it so well thanks earned a sub.
Nice video, thanks. The slow solo part could be done with a metronome to keep all parts at the same tempo. It would help to learn the actual pace.
That's actually a really solid suggestion, thank you!
is this clean tone with reverb?
is that a telecaster jcraft?
3:28 solo
anyone here in lockdown 2021 learning this song?
guys
i'm practicing santeria
Nawww i tried to change up the genre a little bit and now i have to play actual chords💀
4:26 (just because I need to practice this part)
At 2:51 isn’t there supposed to be a 6th fret on the D string before the 654 on the gbe strings?
Yes, as long as you arpeggiate the notes of the chord it's fine. The original isn't at all consistent in regards to what strings are picked when and in what order, but for the sake of this lesson I kept it simple.
Hey, why do you strum even when you're not hitting any notes? Is this to help keep the rhythm?
Yes exactly, this is a very important and underemphasized aspect of guitar rhythm playing. You want to keep moving your right hand consistently, kinda like the pendulum of a clock, this will help you lock into the groove much better, and allow you to play far more complicated rhythms later on!
@@NilsBryant Okay awesome, thank you. I'll integrate that into my practice. I just started playing recently and there's so much to learn.

What does h , b , P, r
stands for?
like 7p8 6b8
Good question! Those are the symbols indicating various techniques used to play notes on the guitar. and they generally add a lot of musicality to your playing, as well as making certain things easier to play.
Here's a quick overview I found, if you're in doubt about what any of them mean, just search youtube/google and you should be albe to find a ton of solid explanations:
h = hammer-on
p = pull-off
/ = slide up
\ = slide down
s = slide
b = bend
r = reverse bend, or release bend
t = right hand tap
+ = right hand tap
x = rhythm click or muted string
v = vibrato
~ = vibrato
(5) = ghost note, or optional note
= harmonic
Thank you! Sir
Hope more Subs to your Channel!
doing this on acoustic is killing my fingers. I really need to invest in an electric guitar
On the verse part, how do I play all of those frets?? I don't have 5 fingers to press on all of them
Hi there, those type of chords, known as barre (or bar) chords, are played by 'barring' the index finger across multiple strings while your other fingers form the actual chord shape (usually resembling open E, Em A and Am chords). The only way you will get your index finger across the fretboard is by making sure your wrist is bent and brought forward (see my LH in the vid). This is quite difficult and a bit uncomfortable at first, so if this is new to you, give it time and maybe do some additional research, check out some other videos etc. Good luck!

Cómo es el rasgueo?
See 1:24, or just slow down the video speed. It's a pretty basic ska strumming pattern...
Oh wait I'm still practicing on the bar chords
I feel like I just learned a new sacred art created by bob Marley himself

Aaaarrrgghh !!! ..

Nice!
3:30 is the part your lookg for
Fuck I can’t even get past the 2nd part of the intro i dont know if my hand isn’t big enough but I can’t get my index finger to hit the 4th fret on both the 6th string and 2nd
I feel your pain man, bar chords aren't easy at first! Make sure to pay close attention to the position and angle of my wrist, which will help getting your index finger to extend all the way. Practice these shapes slowly, maybe using the verse progression (which is all bar chords), before trying to play the intro. Also, there is absolutely no shame in simplifying the parts a bit if you haven't been playing all that long!
The last part to the solo is fucking shittinh on me
What does the s mean?
