  • When it comes to power equipment we try to weigh all of the factors such as how much we will NEED to use it, how much time it will save us, price, upkeep costs, ease of use, reliability, and other other important criteria. So when we needed to dig a bunch of holes naturally I looked into the cost of buying a Stihl or Echo gas powered auger and I immediately dropped that idea when I saw the prices. They're great units if you are using them daily or weekly, but for us a post hole digger is something that would just get used randomly and was NOT a need to own piece of equipment. So I looked at renting one. The problem with renting equipment is that you have to have everything lined up and ready to go so you can get everything done in the time you have the equipment rented. In the back of my mind I thought about seeing one at Harbor Freight and decided to look into the reviews and see if it was something that could hold up to my immediate project. After seeing the price of just over $200, reading the reviews, and then finding a coupon to buy it for $179.99 I was willing to take a chance on it since it was going to cost half that just to rent one for 4 or 5 hours! Our ground is full of stones, rocks, and tree roots and this Predator gas powered auger just ran down through it like nothing! We were able to dig the holes we needed for that job we were doing, then a month later used it for 2 or 3 more holes, let it sit with gas in it over the winter, then drilled several more holes in the spring. We didn't even have to drain the old gas out! 3 pulls and it was up and running! For the money spent on this unit it has MORE than paid for itself and is still reliable and starts up in 3 - 4 pulls every time.

Recently helped a neighbor drill some fencepost holes with a rented Stihl auger, but it had no springs or anything else to help mitigate the torque twist and it beat us up like nobody's business. Regardless, it beats a set of manual post hole diggers! Great video, thanks! 👍

No doubt about a gas powered auger beating a manual post hole digger! Our ground gets very dry and rock hard in the summer time so it takes forever with a manual post hole digger.

Thanks for "posting" this. It's great to hear someone who had a good experience with tools. This is word-for-word what my brother says about the Predator. I'm about to use it to confront raising a fence along a treeline, so it's going to be a little bit of a challenge. Glad you addressed that. There is a danger that with roots, it'll corkscrew around 'em so it requires concentration and awareness. Hitting subscribe.

Thanks for commenting! To be honest, we usually only run this thing at about 1/4 throttle because of all the rock and tree roots on our property and it still does an amazing job!

Not sure if this applies to all 2 stroke predator engines, but I just got my earth auger out after about 8 months in the shed(put STA-BIL gas treatment in when I put it up) and discovered that the fuel lines had disintegrated right where they enter the tank. Fortunately, I had some 1/8 inch tubing laying around and replaced the feed and return lines in about 10 minutes. Had it running about 6 minutes after that (with the old gas still in it). Other than that, I have had no problems with it. I would be happier if it was a little stronger as far as shaft torque. I have had it hit rocks and roots and can hold it myself with it at full throttle and the auger stuck. I would think it should be harder to hold on to for one person. Wouldn't get stuck so easy, but then it would be tougher to use, especially for one person. Still think it is a good buy for the money. Used mine a lot and was very hard on it when I first got it a year ago, and it didn't break and was pretty easy to start, and with new fuel lines, still is.

Hit a rock & root system about 30ft away from a maple tree and almost broke my arm at 1/3 throttle. Be careful folks.

You can actually buy the spring attachment so it doesn’t have such an impact when it hits a rock and whips you I think it comes under extensions i’m thinking along the same lines as you €230 to rent one or buy one for the same and take my time hmmm nice vid ty

This machine has dug a lot of holes in the year and a half that we've had it. It was definitely a good investment compared to renting one. 2 rentals of one would have cost as much as it cost us to purchase this from Harbor Freight.
