Superb. Gilbert Vinter himself, who was adjudicating, said he never expected it to be played better. I have loved the piece for 40 years and I have never heard it done better - even by GUS on their LP recording. This one is so well-shaped and such contrasts of tone, shade and dynamics. What band!

My understanding is that this recording was made privately by someone in the Royal Albert Hall - hence the audio quality - but what a TREASURE to have!

Yes it was a secret recording. My dad John Wesson was one of the trombone players and Mum had the recording made into a CD for my brother and I. The original recording was put onto a very thick and heavy one sided record. We still have the original record... shiny on one side.

Can you spot naughty Trevor tweaking the ear of the trombone player in front of him in the black-and-white band photo used during the cadenza!!??

That is my wonderful Dad, John Wesson, that Trevor Groom is tweaking the ear of! He now lives in Australia and is turning 90 tomorrow. I too love this piece of music.... when the crowd go bonkers... there’s nothing better. We’re going to play it for him on his birthday!

Just wondering James, are you related to one of the bandsmen and how did you come across this recording?
Thank you for putting it together with all the memorabilia and photos from the day. We played it for dad, John Wesson, on Saturday 23rd October for his 90th Birthday. We all shed a few tears and Dad was blown away by the memories.
