- Rex the Collie had been vomiting for five days. He was keen to eat food, but every meal was regurgitated after half an hour. Poor Rex was seriously ill, and his owners had brought him to me for help.
Vomiting is common in the dog world. Dogs are scavengers by nature - in the wild they are carrion eaters, and their stomach is designed to reject any foodstuffs which are not suitable for digestion. This rejection occurs by the vomiting reflex, which involves rapid contraction of the stomach, followed by forcible regurgitation of all stomach contents through the mouth.
Modern domestic dogs have retained both the scavenging instinct and the effective vomiting reflex. In practice, this means that dogs love raking around for scraps of food. Raiding the garbage is a popular pastime for dogs of all shapes and sizes. In addition, if pet dogs eat anything unusual or indigestible, their owner will often find the consequences on the kitchen floor the following morning.
An occasional vomiting episode does no harm, and in fact may perform the useful function of ejecting unwanted rubbish out of the digestive tract. In most cases, if a dog is fasted for twenty-four hours after a vomiting episode, no further treatment is needed, and the animal returns to normal.
However, if an animal vomits repeatedly, and if fasting does not cure the problem, then the situation is more serious.It is then essential to take the affected animal to the vet.
When Rex arrived, it was clear that there was something serious happening. An X-ray of his abdomen showed exactly what was wrong. His stomach was packed full of sharp-ended pieces of bone. His owner had told me that he enjoyed chewing bones. He had obviously chewed this bone into dangerously shaped pieces, which he had then swallowed.
Rex was immediately set up with a drip of warm intra-venous fluids. Repeated vomiting causes the loss of large amounts of regurgitated secretions from the body, which causes dehydration. Dehydration can cause life-threatening complications. It is important to correct any fluid imbalance before attempting other treatment of a dehydrated vomiting animal.
When Rex had been stabilised with fluids, he was given a general anaesthetic, and a gastrotomy was carried out. After opening into his abdomen, his stomach was lifted up to the incision line. The stomach was cut open using a scalpel blade, and the impacted, boney contents were removed. The sharp edges of bone had dug into the outlet of the stomach, causing a complete obstruction. When the stomach contents had been flushed out, Rex’s stomach was sewn up again, and the incision into his abdomen was then closed.
Rex was awake less than an hour later, but he was a sleepy dozey dog, with his senses blurred by the high dose of post-operative pain killers. By the next morning, he was back to tail-wagging form, but he was given no food for another 24 hours. The stomach produces acid whenever food is eaten, so it is important that an animal is fasted until the initial phase of healing of a stomach wound is complete.
Rex enthusiastically devoured a small bowl of bland food the next morning. He remained under close observation for a further three days, but there was no more vomiting. He went home with strict instructions for a carefully supervised diet.
Rex has had no further problems, but he no longer enjoys the luxury of fresh bones from the butcher. His owner has decided that one operation is enough, and Rex has been confined to a standard meat and biscuit diet. His bone crunching days are over!

Give him veggies such as carrots broccoli. Raw is way better for dogs.

Love my RUclips family ❤️ what helped was sadly 😢starving him of his normal food for one day 😭 ( I decided to not eat so i could feel less guilt / I fasted on water and celery juice 🐒🥳) but I gave him plain rice at night . Then the next day I gave him small breakfast, snack , lunch , snack ,dinner. Like literally 10 small pieces of dog food at a time. And it worked!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽✨I read online to do this ☺️ he’s sleeping right now (it’s 4am) I cant sleep. I love this dog so much. Just hearing him lightly breathe as he sleeps makes my heart so full! I didn’t know I could love a dog this much ☺️more than humans easily 😂

I had my dog sick 15 times within 24 hours, I wasn’t offered an X-ray and the vet administered prevomax to stop him vomiting, she added to the vet notes that she couldn’t rule out a foreign body. My 18 month old dog died 7 hours after the prevomax was given as he couldn’t vomit anymore, when cremated a stone was found in his ashes, which if a proper diagnosis had occurred the stone (blockage) would have been visible. If your dog is vomiting trust your instincts, nobody knows your pet better than you, always get an x ray if your dog is vomiting regular it may just save their life.
Great doctor! This video should have more views, considering how honest and well explained it is. I live with 2 dogs adopted from the street and a Shar Pei, the 3 of them very healthy and well socialized. They love to play in the nature and bring every stick they find around, and while I have tought them not to eat the smalls pieces they brake while playing, the shar pei has problems with it due to his strange snout, and the other one just doesn´t care. I do try to keep this to a minimum so sometimes we have to avoid long walks, but when we don´t it is very usual that after coming back home or in our way back they end up throwing up due to this. They don´t feel well for 2 or 5 minutes, but after chilling a bit and drinking some water they are asking me to eat something, probably due to the empty stomach feeling they get, and like you said, I cook some rice and they love it.

My dog was vomiting for 4 days straight i took him to the vet they prescribed a medicine to take for 1 month. During that month he didn’t vomit but as soon as the medication was done he started vomiting again. So i took him back and they told me to give him the medicine for 1 more month. So i did but the same thing happened. So i demanded an echo immediately from the vet. There was nothing abnormal visible on the echo so the vet gave me dog food for sensitive stomach and since then he never vomited again (it’s been 5 months). Sometimes the answer is more simple than you think... he just needed to eat food that isn’t harsh on his stomach.
What was the food you gave? Can you please let me know

Our 3 yr old standard will vomit a yellowish vomit that may or may not have a few pieces of food. He may vomit 1-3 times in an episode and then stop. He may not vomit after this for a few months-to the point where we’d forget about it. We feed him a very good kibble food bought at the pet store. We mentioned it to our vet and she examined him but didn’t find anything and didn’t seem concerned. My concern is GDV.
My pom-chihuahua has been vomiting, I find little blobs of semi digested food, blobs of white phlegm, and blobs of whiteish foam with phlegm. She had done it for a few days, then stopped. Now a few weeks later she’s back at it. No new food, or treats.
Going to the vet is not in my budget unfortunately.
She’s fine otherwise, no fevers, bloody poops or anything, she still plays, runs around, etc. It’s just confusing 😞

I gave mine plain rice then added a bit of boiled fat and skin removed chicken breast. It worked well and make sure they don't eat garlic or onion it's not good for them.

My 20 month old German Shepherd ate some stuff that my wife uses for decorations, in a jar there was something that looked like a sea shell but it is actually fairly soft, like dried up orange peel. It looks more like walnut shell but is not rock solid as walnut shell. So she's been active and running around but she threw up several times in the last 12 hours, I'd say around 8 times, her first two episodes were worst because her stomach was full, after that it was less and less stuff, her last one was just clear liquid with little yellow spots in it.
I can't afford to take her to the vet, since covid the vet prices have sky rocketed here so bad that many people don't take their dogs and they return their dogs to the shelters.
Visit cost alone is $100, that's just for coming through the door.
X-Rays are in the neighbourhood of $300, and bood test is $250.
So $650 just for that and then medication on top of it as they always prescribe some sort of medication which usually always runs around $100-$200
You have to be rich in Ontario in order to afford a vet.

ahmed gonzales it was the dog food. I have him pepto bismuth ( the generic brand) it helped a little but it wasn’t until I started to feed him victor brand dog food that it stopped. The bismuth stopped the vomiting and the victor solidified his stool.

Everytime my 4 month old dog is with us in the car he vomits- all the food he had ate. He has not been eating as well either. Only wants house food, not his food, and has a tendency of swallowing his snacks.
I cant speak to the other things but vomiting in the car at 4 months isn't uncommon. Their inner ear / balance isnt fully developed till around a year.

Give him something hd likes when he's im car if he gets excited over certain rawhide offer him that to get his min off riding.. hemay not want it though he will get use to it he just getting motion sickness.. and stressing about rideb..if u boom radio STOP it til.he gets use to riding..see if that helps it what I do with GS puppies training thrm it's worked for 12 years lol..good luck

I’m confused cause my dog was good yesterday morning and starts regurgitateing I didn’t really worry but then is low on energy and doesn’t want to eat. Can someone explain this: dog didn’t want a treat last night. Started acting lazy and not responding to commands that normally would get them excited. Puking bike for 24 hours straight now and isn’t happy and excited. Just wants to lay around and pukes every time it’s given food or water.

@@beenscorinn turns out my dog was just a nervous wreck (adopted from an abusive family). I think she might have eaten food off the floor. If your dog is older, prepare for the worst. I had an old dog who became u aware of anything. 2 months later we put him down. Should've been put to rest 2 months sooner.
In summary, she just randomly was ok again and I can't explain what happened.
What if he vomits a little for the day then stops...but won't drink his milk and isn't bright and cheerful, what could be the problem?

My dog started vomiting in the morning. First there was a brown pile of mashed dog food.
I am thinking that maybe the sudden change of food caused the vomiting but I'm not sure.

Gabriel Vidal yes she got better! So what I did was a few thing I found on RUclips to help.... I gave her a little bit of white rice and that seemed to help her! She is good now. I had also gone to my local vet to make sure and they just told me she could've possibly eaten something that her body couldn't tolerate so she was throwing it up!

On the first night when she started throwing up there was a huge amount of vomit but all liquid and grass. Nothing but grass and the liquid is brown.
Another note.. I have noticed she eats the other dogs poop. She only eats it fresh.. So not they take turns going out so we do not have that problem anymore.

Darneise Love I took her in and it was nothing. They said she probably ate something but the fact that when they give her treats she eats them is a sign that it’s not parvo. Plus she wasn’t dehydrated and still very playful. So they gave her meds to keep her food down and she was fine the next day back to her normal self. I honestly think it was the chew bone I gave her two days before. I think she ate it instead of chewing on it. That’s the color the vomit looked like. She’s now 10lbs heavier and still playing like she’s a small puppy but she’s pushing 50lbs.

I have shih tzu guys, he is vomiting yellow foam :C and doesn't want to eat after he got inject So i have a best thing to do is put a salt or Sugar, put a sugar or salt on half spoon and put it on water force the dog to drink it, and tommorow take her or them on vet, Sorry for bad grammar just want to help :) If this work please like! :D New: if ur dog didn't get inject and still vomiting just do what i said :D make sure to make dog rest always! Dont make them run or street's!
My dog (male breed-Lhasa Apso), (age-3yrs) do vimit whenever eat some food or water from 1 week...no any effect of medicine seen from 1 week and also no any disease seen in all types of blood test & also liver and kidney were normal..So in this situation..what medicine should be given to him,,Plz guys ...anyone suggest what to do now?
Probably you need to change food and consider super premium or homemade (barf, raw or cooked) balanced diet. Check out if kibble has grains, soy or corn. Grains or greens makes dogs sick sometimes.
I have a Lhasa apso and I’m having the same issue 😟
My dog puked and I didnt realize until I smelt like a tuna kinda smell and I checked on him and he was heavy breathing so I walked him down stairs and have him water which he took some decent size gulps of water then came up stairs and fell asleep will he be ok??
Take him to the vet.
