  • Sky's Martha Kelner reports from Fort Myers Beach, one of the places worst affected by Hurricane Ian which left large areas flattened.
Winds of over 100 miles-per-hour and a storm surge up to 12 feet have left countless people homeless and a unknown number missing.

I moved to Florida three years ago. This was my first hurricane. I was beyond blessed. I had little damage. But I don't think I could deal with going through another one, now seeing the destruction all around me. I didn't have internet or TV for days. These are my first glimpses of the statewide damage. It's heartbreaking.

I blame the construction code. Florida homes are slapped together with a coat of stucco. Some ornamental portions are actually styrofoam coated with stucco. The winds were relentless for hours and hours& all I lost was a pool cage, while others in my neighborhood all model homes sustained tremendous amount of damage. Hard to explain but now I know why a lot of the homes in Key West Florida are wooden. Maybe they sway with the wind like the palm trees do , Who knows.

Florida homes are typically made of concrete.
Florida's population boom happened in the last 100 years or so. Major cities like Miami were sleepy military towns some 60-70 years ago. We're still learning about how to live in Florida. For example, houses in Florida don't have basements because it's too dangerous and can provoke sink holes (even way in land). As we're learning about how homes are affected by these storms, the building code changes. Unfortunately we don't know until one hits very bad.

I can't believe the guy that said he has lived in Florida all his life. He should know better then to evacuate any time a hurricane is coming up through the gulf rather then to put his babies in danger. I live in Sarasota and I began evacuating before the hurricane passed Cuba. I have lived in on the Gulf Coast of Florida for 25+ years and know better then to try and ride out a Cat 4 hurricane. I guess he missed the Governor telling everyone to make their evacuation plans because the hurricane could change course once it passed Cuba which it did.

I've been thinking a lot about all the people who have lost their lives in Hurricane Ian and all the damage that it did to Florida and South Carolina. After watching many of the interviews with people who made it through the storm surge and hurricane-force winds, it struck me that many of the people, who stayed because they had been through other smaller hurricanes in the past, didn't seem to have a fundamental understanding of the difference between a category 1 hurricane and a category 4 hurricane even though they had been warned that it was on its way several days in advance. The critical information they needed to know in advance is that hurricane wind force increases exponentially, not linearly. A Category 5 hurricane, for example, is 500 times more powerful than a Category 1. How does this relate to property damage? Compared to Category 1, a Category 2 hurricane can generate seven times the amount of damage, while a Category 5 storm can generate 144 times the amount of destruction. If they had understood this, they would have left before the storm arrived and it would have saved many lives. Science education is extremely valuable and saves lives.
