That is my Leopard 40 “Kavalea”! She was lifted out of the mangroves on 11/4 and while she has some scrapes, scratches, and bruises she is in remarkable shape. We lived on our boat in Snook Bight Marina until Ian demolished our beautiful island. When she was placed back in the water we did a full assessment of her systems and then she started right up. Two days later we motored 8 hours to our new marina near Naples. We are now getting ready to put her in a yard in Ft Lauderdale for fiberglass and gel coat repairs.
So lucky, and fare well.

This is the first video that really clued me in to the extent of all the destruction. Thanks for taking the time to document it. Also, the briefcase is mine. It must of fallen off my yacht that got stuck in the mangroves.

Just to add a little more context, I am about 40 miles up river from Fort Myers Beach, the Caloosahatchee river, and my dock was about 6 feet under water for a couple days after the storm. Our elevation here is about 43 feet above sea level. I believe Sam has navigated this water way that connects the West Coast of Florida to the East Coast of Florida.

@@mtadams2009 I agree Scott and those solar panels weren’t cheap I bet !!! And pulling wet drywall had to have been a heavy, smelly job. He was first focused on his grandmother and that is why he went there !! Did they not see for several days he worked very hard ? Everyone is helping in their own way !!!!! And those comments aren’t needed especially now !!!

Having grown up on the pan handle, I have seen a few hurricane zones of destruction. This one was bad. Glad no casualties in your family and the house does not look bad at all compared to the total destruction of the area. So glad you were able to help your family. Family counts when all else fails. A follow up video in a few months would be nice, both of the house and the area.

My 88 yrold dad lives over in Leigh High Acres and weathered out the storm in his home (as he always has). He did not have much damage as most of the trees he had to cut down after the last hurricane. I appreciate seeing the raw unvarnished nature of your surveying the scene. Love your channel, you are a lucky dude.

I went through Katrina in '05 in Bay St. Louis MS. Even after seeing the worst of a hurricane, you never get used to how bizzaro it all is afterwards.

Let's spend the many on a creation of a maker space next to wind turbine grave yard. So maker space is orientated on reusing composite parts from wind turbine blades. Building boats like proas and giving them to community who wont's to be a fisherman. Or delivery person and fisherman.

I was there last week, the devastation is beyond anything I have ever seen and could not imagine how anyone rode that storm out. I was in Cape Canaveral for Nicole in my truck camper and that was pretty intense and it was a cat 1 I couldn't imagine a 4/5

Great video Sam. I grew up in Naples and there really hasn't been much since Donna in 1960. This one was really terrible. We had just move to Lauderdale when it hit. We closed on a boat the week of the second one. Really bummed I missed you at the show. I was there With David and Mary Shih and was hoping to say hi. Thanks again. Franny

Being a past marina manager at some of the FMB marinas, people would always ask," what happens if the water got so high the docks floated away?" My answer was, " If that ever happened, we got bigger things to worry about" Well, I got my answer. Also, I was surprised there were not more boats up Hell Peckney Bay. Great video on showing what mid island looks like.
Oh no there's boats everywhere all over. A lot of them crushed into what was Salty Sams and against Olson's. Most things went north north east from the blow.

I used to rent a house on Palmetto just a few blocks from there. My beach access was Dakota, near the Sandpiper. My girls' busstop for Beach Elementary was the blue carwash just south of there which is completely gone! Crazy to see all the damage. I moved away in 2014. I lived on Mango St at that time and really sad to see Heavenly Biscuit just gone :(

Man I’ve been watching your videos and loving them, your energy is great and then I heard you say Durham NC, I’m from Asheboro NC and just picked up our first sailboat, A 26’ trailerable sailboat for sailing around our lakes, learn the ropes and save for our blue water cruiser in the next few years. Keep up the videos man and if you’re every looking to teach someone to sail let me know lol I could use some lessons.
Now that is a new twist on washed money. May its owner be reunited with it. I'm imagining an evacuation scenario left a little too late. But heck who would want to leave their big boat until it was nearly flying across the canal. A truly wonderful documentary there Sam!
Interesting differences in culture. Here in Kalifornia, we are still looking at unrepaired properties damaged from the Atlas Peak fire in 2018. 27 years to get a building permit to replace a fire destroyed building here in Benicia.

I have been thru that recently with hurricane IDA that hit Louisiana. My house and community on the coast had 150 mph winds. But my section was protected with levees and didn't get the water. It's the only reason I still have a house. People will rebuild and get past this storm damage. But the scares will remain.

First time I saw the destruction up close . Just wondering how much the insurance ,that is if you can find insurance . The roll of dice of another hurricane . At least you know how high the water level can go up . Maybe a couple of container on stilts and a Geo-Dome could work . The real marvel is the house is still standing . Thanks Sam .
The juxtaposition of a show-full of luxury boats in Ft. Lauderdale and the destruction in Ft. Myers is jarring. But for a turn of the wind, those two scenes could have easily switched places. And what did you do with that briefcase full of cash??? In any event, keep smiling Sam!

Im sure its too late now,, but what I've seen done before when removing flooded drywall is use a circular saw to cut it out horizontally just above the point where the saturation stops. You could snap a line and follow it. Makes rerocking much easier.

We just went through Hurricane Nicole. Not nearly as bad as Ian on the West coast. Some houses destroyed up in Daytona. PBC fared well. Hopefully H season is over for another year.
Oh man, its so sad to see all those boats stranded and the devastation is unbelievable. It never fails to amaze me just how powerful Mother nature is.
Not judging, really curious: do places like this have no sea defenses at all, so close to the coast?
@@SunshineSailing84 I guess it wouldn't stop the wind damage. I've been to Fort Myers and they definitely have Sea Defenses but I remember someone there telling me that it's very hard to protect Florida in general due to the whole place being so low. Due to the size of the hurricane, it probably overwhelmed the defenses anyway.

A big difference from Europe Sam. Until seeing this, like all tragedy, once out of the news, you forget about it and focus on the next horror shows of nature. To see you back in the U.S. is like you never left, but to see what you went into is biohazard and apocalyptic type destruction. The fact that the house is saveable is amazing, and there you were, moving on and doing glass work on boards...lol....Take care, and hopefully the rebuild will go well.....
