I watched it in the cinema last night and I’ve never seen any Bruce Lee film in the cinema after viewing them 100s of times…. It was absolutely magical! It was such a strange experience watching it knowing every beat of the film and it feeling fresh on the big screen. The energy when Bruce is on screen was magnificent as always but on a cinema screen - wonderful. I did notice at the cinema that some of the scenes in Enter the Dragon the cinematography isn’t that great - some scenes are blurred to be honest and there’s no recovering that whatever the format. All the Bruce scenes pin point sharp and the colours in the cinema on the 4k was magnificent. When the film finished you could feel the warm and buzz from people leaving the cinema - talking about how good Bruce was. Lovely intro from Shannon in the cinema on the film - that would’ve been nice on this release. I’ve not watched the 4k yet as delayed it due to seeing it in the cinema. I’d actually say it’s the most fun I’ve ever had in a cinema - very cherished trip

From the BBFC RE: Enter The Dragon 2023 release - "In order for its policies to remain relevant and in tune with public feeling, the BBFC regularly reviews and adjusts them accordingly when issuing a new set of Guidelines. In 1999, the BBFC embarked on its first extensive consultation process with the public, in order to gauge public taste, attitudes and concerns on various issues relevant to film and other audio-visual media. In the same year, in light of this change to a more context-based, proportionate approach to classification issues, the past distinction between martial arts and other weapons was abandoned. This meant that in 2001, Enter The Dragon was classified at 18 for video, with all previous cuts (both to violence and weapons) fully restored. Now, depictions of offensive weapons, or glamourous and detailed depictions of violent techniques, are still liable for cuts - or are refused classification - if they are considered to promote illegal behaviour in the real world. However, such instances are rare.
In its most recent submission to the BBFC for video release in 2023, Enter The Dragon was re-classified at 15, along with the content advice of: ‘strong violence, sexual threat, nudity, sex references’.
At 15, our Guidelines on the issue of violence state that: ‘Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury.’ Against these current standards, the violence in Enter The Dragon lacks the visual detail that would warrant the adult category. The sound of bones being broken and brief blood spurts implying slashes with knives accompany largely masked uses of martial arts and weaponry, leaving much to the imagination of viewers.
Other issues that contribute to the 15 classification also include strong sex references and nudity, pertaining to female breast and buttock nudity in the context of sex work, as well as the implication of group sex having taken place; although the latter does not take place on-screen. Also significant at 15 in Enter The Dragon is the issue of sexual threat. BBFC Guidelines reflect the sensitive nature of issues relating to sexual violence, sexual threat and other sexually abusive behaviour, which our research with the public has highlighted. A scene from the film depicts a prolonged flashback sequence in which a woman is pursued by a gang of men. Their intention is of a sexual nature, but the focus on the threat is not so strong or sustained that it would have warranted a higher classification".

Great review. It's easy to have rose tinted glasses when watching your favourite film but your honesty is refreshing. Warners are not the only ones who treat their significant releases so poorly. Mgm do the same with the Rocky franchise. Enter the Dragon has made Warner $2 billion, so for a 50th anniversary its a bit piss poor. Still, looking forward to seeing it on the big screen next week...

They have put Bruce’s voice on the mono channel, Stripey ( and cleaned it up ).
American release get a digital code for the extras ( and No BluRay).
I like the PQ. Criterion’s looked grainy and over-exposed, so I’m very happy with it and it’s less than £20 ( most new 4Ks are £25 at HMV ).
Importantly, the press release says it’s scanned from the original camera negative, so it is as good as it can be.

This is one of the most important and impactful action films ever released. I don't think there is anything wrong with expecting warner to do something special to commemorate the 50th anniversary of it's release. It is nice to get the 4K release, but some extras that haven't already been released twenty times would have been nice.

Reason for the different age ratings on the discs bbfc gave both Theatrical and Special Edition cuts a new age 15 rating on 17th July 2023
It's only the UHD that is a new disc pressing.
Special Edition cut in 2001 was given age 18 rating by bbfc
As the Blu-ray is the 40th Anniversary disc (Special Edition cut) from 2013 that's why that has 18
    It's a existing disc pressed before 2023
Slipcover has 18 as it includes the existing pressed Blu-ray disc rated age 18.

Any grain removal is an eyebrow raiser for me, that really shouldn't be tampered with because that's where all the detail is. I have to say, I don't typically care for comparisons filmed off of a TV when I see them, as I think it's really hard to make a good judgement and presentation that way, BUT... you've done easily the best version of that I've ever seen. Very slickly shot and framed, and it did give a decent idea of the differences between the two transfers, so I have to give you credit for that 👍

@stevenbaldwin7241 I found the same, the picture quality was disappointing. I see a lot of so called 4k restoration reissues at the cinema, and they can be a little grainy. Think 4k is often over-hyped.

    • @benpascall4297
      @benpascall4297 Год назад

@@stevenbaldwin7241 so you’re commenting on the 4k Blu ray edition based on the cinema restoration?
Also, could you define ‘clear’? When you mean clear, do you mean free of grain? If yes, I’d seriously question that as grain is often more prevalent in a 4k restoration, but is also a part of the original shot on film look. If something looks more ‘clear’ in comparison, it’s possible that it’s also been scrubbed of grain, using DNR, which also scrubs away other detail in the picture.
I refute any claims that DVD looks better than any 4k restoration. Unless the 4k is a complete balls up, which this isn’t, it’s simply not possible purely based on a technical level and the number of pixels and data on screen.

    • @stevenbaldwin7241

@benpascall4297 The cinema 4k version was like watching a film on TV, and then if you put TV on HD that's what my dvd is like if you know what I mean. Like I said I've not bought ETD 4k edition yet but I will. And I no for a fact it will be a lot clearer than my normal dvd. It's just the cinema version I found it blury not so much grainy. If you do go and watch it at the cinema you will know what I mean.

"underwhelmed" is exactly what I thought on first viewing. While not perfect it's probably the best this movie looks at present. I only the 40th anniversary bluray to compare with, not the Criterion, even so it's quite obvious how much an improvement this version is over that one. I think maybe like you Stripey I had high expectations, plus having spent the last few days trawling through the arrow boxset I have been spoilt with the overall PQ with Big Boss & Fist of Fury in particular.

Thank you for your honest words. I think your criticisms are spot on. Again, Warner Bros. released a lacklustre product showing only the bare minimum of effort. And you have to keep in mind that the US release doesn’t even come with a Blu-ray! For a standard 70ies film this would be an OK product with a solid picture quality (albeit missing Dolby Vision) but given the film historical significance of Enter The Dragon this is a cheap shot by WB. And I’m not really surprised taking into account their missteps (mainly in the sound department) with the 4k box sets of the Rocky and the Superman movies. While “celebrating” their 100th anniversary they are not able (or willing) to come up with one single new special for THE martial arts movie that influenced the industry and the world? Not even at its 50th anniversary? You are absolutely right: They just don’t care - and it shows. This release should have come with at least a new commentary track and a new feature length documentary about the movie, the genre and about Bruce Lee. Just imagine what Arrow would have done with this. Or if the inhouse job was a must they could have delegated ETD to their small but superb team behind The Warner Archive Collection. In short: I'm happy to have ETD in a quality that's at least a technical reflection of our time but the product as a whole is underwhelming and (as you put it so aptly) just disrespectful.

On another note, why are the majority of americans claiming it is fantastic? I know its subjective, however, the general thinking in the UK is that it isnt great which i agree it isnt. Is it because reviewers in the US are only on YT for money with views and affiliate links?, To me thats the way its looking.

In respect of BBFC, whenever a new version is introduced, which includes a 4k version, or an uncut / extended version, it has to be re-submitted to the BBFC. The BBFC will certify based on its rules at the time, but what they won’t do is re-certify any previous versions if they decided to allocate a new classification for the latest release. John Wick 2 is a good example, 15 in cinemas and on Bluray, but 18 on 4k as it was uncut and certain darker scenes were more visible on 4k.

Before buying this 4K edition I only had the 2007 Warner release (the one with the pinkish cover) so I cannot speak to the Criterion edition...but to my eyes (and ears) this is an absolutely cracking upgrade. As you say, there are a few scenes (or cuts within the scenes) at the start where the detail is not great but comparing to the previous release I assume this is the fault of the source material (those bits look like DVD quality on that 2007 release as well)...once the movie gets going though, the picture (especially the colours) is gorgeous and a joy to look at...I never realised how drab my 2007 release looked until I saw this. The sound is also a huge improvement...the music is lush, detailed and has great range (I have a pretty decent sound system) and I have no complaints at all. I agree, it would have been nice if the release mentioned the 50th anniversary and maybe came with a booklet or something but overall I think this is a great release and well worth a purchase 😀👍

@@StripeyR Yeah deffo. I've always been a big fan of cinema but all those years of watching it on TV or shitty VHS copies of US versions or the later VHS/DVD uncut releases didn't quite prepare me for the impact on the big screen. I liked the intro from his daughter too, nice touch. You can tell this was relatively big budget, compared to a lot of other martial arts films from the period. I was left last night wondering what else he would have done, had he not died. I liked the direction GoD took and I've always thought the BL cut was a phenomenal piece of work. @@StripeyR Weird. Maybe it's the chain? I searched for it in my area and Vue (ex WB) were the only one showing it and they only had ONE showing this entire week. Cos I did the booking online I looked at the seats and I could see that the only people who booked, booked the row I was on with the "comfort" seats. So it was awkward as fuck when me and the only guy there early walked in and sat one seat apart. Then two groups of blokes walked in and then a female couple. Then some bloke who had clearly done the same as me and the guy next to me, lol. All on the same row. One thing that bugged me yesterday - At the climatic Han fight, just before he goes into the mirrored bathroom, there's a giant wheel behind Lee. It shows up quite often in posters and stills - anyone know what the hell it is? I tried working it out last night whilst watching it but still none the wiser

    The ending sounds better too.
It improves it so much and that’s how I watched it as a kid on VHS in England. The special edition has no score over it and it’s too quiet without the music. It’s a shame theres not a 3rd edit with the extra footage with Bruce lees real voice with the Theatrical cut audio track.

Now I had the anniversary of the box set with the soundtrack and video plus a booklet. Now if u have that booklet their is a page with all three looking over their shoulders and in that page there is a part that say there is a scene cuz out with Bolo beating up one of the men who was moving the luggage and I think maybe one dropped it or fell and it made I think Bolo angry and that is why all three looked over their shoulder and then u see Bolo looking at them in anger. Now when u was talking about scenes cut like I believe the woman who Le was talking too about the warehouse ans there is I think she was fighting too and they cut that out too or never made to film. Warner Bros honestly should be ashamed to get people who are fans of the film to,show us of how much they care. But people like u tell us the truth and we love it always and always hope u are doing well to and hope the wedding does great ans hear from u soon.

Hi Stripey, another great review from the essex nunchaku king :). This brightness issue you had with ETD 4k. Its not your set up is it? Amount of times I've had to adjust my picture to get a better quality presentation and some tellys are just better than others in presenting films as they should look. I guess the acid test will be the actual cinema screening itself. As for the ratings. I noticed that on the BBFC website. All of Bruce's films are now 15, which is surprising when you consider the level of violence and gore in ' The Big Boss'. Very disappointed that Warners did not put the theatrical version on the standard Blu Ray - it defies common sense doesn't it. And the cut you mentioned in the banquet scene, whats that all about? We need to know. I perked up reading another post had mentioned that there is another 50th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition out in September Blimey! they really know how to bleed the fans dry dont they. Could this really be all what we have dreamed of. Or just another vanilla Warner Bros money spinner.

I enjoyed this release, but I feel they could have included an additional disc with all of the previous bonus content we've had in other releases. When it comes to the brightness in certain scenes, this is a general problem with HDR because there seems to be no grading standard like there was with SDR. My projector even has a dedicated button on the remote to adjust the HDR gamma on the fly because it's such a widespread issue. I didn't have the same problems you did with the brightness, but then again I adjust my HDR gamma nearly every time I start a film (it only takes about 5-10 seconds but this drives my wife crazy haha). When it comes to the audio I was happy that the atmos track was basic and clear. Just a nice restoration, the dialog was very articulate and the action sequences had a lot of punch to them. Nothing fancy as far as atmos surround effects or anything but it got the job done. Gotta agree with you on the theatrical cut, I can't stand the way the extended/special cut breaks the pacing at the end adding in the flashback with the whole "the enemy is only illusions" or whatever.....super happy I can just watch the theatrical cut. Cheers!

Good vid, have to agree with what's said. It's clearly obvious that whoever came up with this release from Warner Bros doesn't have respect for Bruce Lee and his fans, it's just a basic re-release upgrade on 4k as part of their 100th Warner Bros 4k upgrade catalogue, and that's simply it. Makes me think after Bruce's passing who really financially benefited from Enter The Dragon, Warner Bros or did the Bruce Lee estate get a fair share? In my opinion Warner Bros is a joke and don't value this legend and the fact its been 50 years anniversary of this movie and his passing, you'd think they'd make the extra effort to one of the most influential martial arts movie ever made with extras, unreleased footage, deleted scenes etc. However if they really give a shit, then hope they re-release by doing it justice with the like of Arrow and Criterion giving the fans what they want!
