TOTALLY agree with you on the sound track. The Mandarin cut freaked me out, I grew up with the Cantonese version since the 80's with the Bruce Lee 'sounds' and music. I can't watch the Mandarin cut anymore. Best wishes
It's funny how you get so used to a certain soundtrack of a movie and when it alters its quite jarring in a way 🥴 Although the Mandarin Cut is a really amazing thing to watch but the original cut is the one that I will play the most! Cheers mate 🤩🤩👍👍

It's funny DLB, when you start asking around (thinking you might be the only one thinking something) plenty of other people share your views! 😁😁 yeah can't go past that version for me, it's funny over the years there have been tweaks to these movies or alternate audio and your like "whhhhhaaaa??" Thank you for reviewing this film. I saw The Big Boss on its original release in the cinemas in the '70s, I was a big Martial Arts fan back then (and still am really) and was a young practicing Martial Artist too, as I was born in the late '50s in the U.K. I saw this film numerous times (under age I might add, but I looked older than my years back then) in various cinemas in different towns near where I lived whenever it was being screened, I did this with all the best Martial Arts films of the time, the other Bruce Lee films of course, and many other ones too. I can tell you for certain that the 'saw in the head' scene quite definitely did exist in The Big Boss, and I was shocked when I found that it along with some other scenes had been cut from, firstly, the VHS release and later DVD releases, the same it true for Fist of Fury, and to a lesser extent to Way of The Dragon and even Enter The Dragon, we all know about what happened with Game of Death sadly post Bruce's untimely death.

@@MondoChelloveckMovies Thank you. Yes, I saw the saw scene (there's a mouthful) in the cinemas at the time, funnily enough there were different prints doing the rounds, some which had different cuts in them, this was possibly due to different cinema groups who owned the particular cinema, these were the days before the big chains, like Odeon, Vue, etc, etc, all you had was the name of the local cinema, in my town at the time it was 'The Scala', the only real cinema chain which I can remember was ABC Cinemas but many were independent. The places were often small in comparison to todays standards but what they would do is do certain weeks with a theme, for example, in one week I saw every Sean Connery James Bond film, as they'd show two films at a time for two days, then the next two days another two, and then the last two days another two so, six films in one week. I saw many great films because you'd have your main feature and a 'B' film, many times the 'B' film was better than the main one, of the Martial Arts films some of my favourites from back then were, 'Hapkido', 'Ten Fingers of Steel', 'One Armed Boxer', 'Blind, Deaf Mute', and the Bruce Lee ones of course, a few years later there was 'The Man from Hong Kong' which starred Jimmy Wang Yu who was in One Armed Boxer, it was like Enter The Dragon as it was a collaboration with an American company, it was supposed to launch Jimmy in the USA but he got in trouble with the Hong Kong Mafia and ended up either killing or badly injuring someone (sorry, I can't remember exactly it was so long ago) and he ended up going to prison.

@@MondoChelloveckMovies yup. At the local Odeon. Back then you never knew what you'd see. I saw Enter with all the nunchuck footage removed. The double chuck fight in Way removed. It's so great that the footage has been restored. When you think they shot 3 hours of film for Boss, hopefully, one day that will be discovered but Arrow have done a fine job. However, like you, having grown up with the English dub, I find the audio for Boss hard to take on the Mandarin cut.
@marcushawkes392 sadly I never saw any Bruce Lee stuff at the Cinema (even on re-release) I can imagine the prints being widely different at times 😲 nunchucks were SO forbidden for a long time it's crazy!! Yeah so glad to see that returned and we get the full versions, I do think there is more footage out there that will be discovered (if it hasn't already 😉) but for now Arrow are king with this release 🤩👍 yep gotta do my familiar audio, takes me out of the film if I don't Cheers Marcus 😵💫🤩🤩👍👍

Hi mate got this delivered to Germany today unfortunately i had to pay£130 from Amazon for the red box version however it really is something special and once the 4k enter the dragon arrives it will be the ultimate Bruce Lee collection probably never to be betterd. So yes it's not cheap but now it's on my shelf and it's only money😊
Excellent mate 🤩🤩👌👌 its a big ticket to pay but the set more than delivers on every level for me 😁😁👏👏 yep 4K Enter the Dragon is tye icing on the cake and as you say I can't see anything coming close to it!! Only if some really crazy Undiscovered archive material emerged, but it probably be such a small amount to could get put into a disc of stuff.....but as a set everything I remember liking about Bruce Lee is in here! 🤣 yeah you can't take it with you and you have it now!! Enjoy your set bud 🤩🤩👍👍
I don't know if it is 🤔 I would imagine there is a limited amount to it as it seems to grandiose to run forever, saying that the equally amazing Shawscope sets are still going, but they might not sell as fast as the Bruce Lee set seems to be going! At a guess I would say 6000 tops 🤔🤔👍👍
Nice video as usual John, always informative and entertaining. I saw The Big Boss Years ago on one of the Shout Factory Blu Ray releases, but Shout didn't do as good a job as I was hoping for on the film, so I'm hoping Arrow's work on the film gives me a better experience. Didn't realize there were so many different cuts of the film before, that is interesting and amazing. Bruce Lee was originally meant to be a supporting character in the film while costar James Tien was slated for the hero role, but midway through filming Lee's popularity skyrocketed when The Green Hornet, a show he was the co-lead in, aired in Hong Kong and Raymond Chow had Lo Wei do rewrites that made Lee's character into the hero. At first there was confusion among audiences as the first half of the film did focus a little more on James Tien with Lee kind of being an observer to everything going, but interviews with Lee and others cleared it all up. I've heard of the infamous chainsaw scene before, but I was starting to think it was more of an Urban Legend until I heard you say there's a snippet of it on RUclips, so I'll be looking for it. I do plan on picking up that Arrow set down the road at some point, just saving up and hoping for another sale. Take care my friend, hope you and the Debs are well, and speak to you soon.
Loving this set. I've watched The Big Boss Mandarin cut with extras, Game of Death with extras, and Enter The Dragon without extras (seen them all before). Arrow have done an amazing job here, without a doubt the best release of the year. And I wasn't going to get this set, I own them already and I've seen the films many times, but there is so much extra content in this set that it's worth every penny of that price tag. So dear Arrow, can we have a Brucesploitation box set next?
Yeah Stephen, it's delivered on every level for me and I'm only 2 discs in!! 😱 I'm putting at best release of year by far at the moment, can't see it being bettered Stephen 😁👏👏 as you say we have seen these movies countless times but the presentation and extras (which are plentiful) make ut an essential buy for Bruce Lee fans 👏👏 Severin are releasing a Brucesploitation documentary soon, which should be great but a box set of the best Brucesploitation movies would be amazing wouldn't it Stephen 😲😲🤩🤩👍👍
Personally I would say yes Kieran 🤔👍 although I haven't got the Criterion set myself....I would check the specs of the both sets and see if the Arrow video offers significant increase in extras, I would assume that the Mandarin cut and the Final Game of Death is exclusive to this set.....maybe if all the stuff on Criterion is on here you can upgrade to the Arrow set and sell the Criterion to offset the price? Will you be doing blu Ray or 4k mate? 🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Blu-ray, I don’t have a 4k player anymore! It broke and they were pricey to replace at the time! A proper ball-ache! My region A blus are useless now! I had a great 4K multi-region player too. Luckily I had a mate convert them to region Bs and I learned a valuable lesson! Thanks for the heads up, I don’t think I can resist the upgrade but might just ask for it for my birthday to avoid shelling out for more! I’ve bought every format of Lee’s movies from VHS and beta days to blus nowadays. It’s costly! Ha ha!
@kierank1982 that's a bummer Kieran 😲😲 nothing worse than when that happens! Hi , I remember seeing The Big Boss multiple times at the cinema then getting it on video and the soundtrack was different ... it had music by Pink Floyd on it which I'm sure you have seen yourself. I have a question ... Bruce Lee's warcry was never in the original. Is that restored ? It will be interesting to find out about Game of Death as there are 2 versions ... One - terrible war crys from some idiot, and the 2nd overdubs of Bruce himself from previous movies, & Kareems eyes different when the shades are knocked off. Looking forward to more from this box set. Thankyou so much for this post. Regards Jim !
The 1982 Cantonese soundtrack with Pink Floyd and King Crimson, and Bruce's war cries (lifted from Enter the Dragon) is also included in the Arrow boxset. The 1971 original Mandarin version didn't have Bruce's war cries or his own voice.
@@jasonhart751 Thankyou that's one of the versions I have but did wonder if there was his actual warcry for The Big Boss that still existed rather than overdubbed from E.T.D.
The whole background to Bruce's war crys is really fascinating and also hard to navigate!! I hope somewhere in the box it might answer some questions about them and say who did what on which version 🤞🤞 I haven't heard the Pink Floyd soundtrack though Jim 🤯😲😁😁 be interesting to hear that 🤔😊😊👍👍
@jasonhart751 thanks for the info Jason, as I was saying I would love to see a documentary on his war cries and who did what on what movie 🤔🤔 fascinating subject 😁😁👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies You will love that version. Pink Floyd music actually works. ... As for the war cries ... whoever did the original version of Game of Death should be shot !!! Lol - " Ha gaa ha gaa ha gaa wooo " That is all he could do ? Sooo bad !!!
It’s NOT original language. Bruce spoke Cantonese. Mandarin doesn’t have his fighting screams. That’s a big minus, for me. Agree it adds to the story, but I’m all about the original screams. Couldn’t Arrow have offered the Mandarin film with the Cantonese sound? That’s what I want 🤷♂️
I did miss the war cries from Bruce in the Mandarin cut, as much as its a fascinating watch, I'm so used to the soundtrack I've heard all my life, it kind of alters the movie 🤔👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Well, John, given these have the clever branching tech, it would’ve been easy to offer a choice. Interestingly, Arrows Streaming service has 4 choices to watch Big Boss and None are Cantonese 🙄
It might be that "rights issue" problem that seems to plague every release these days, who knows 🤔🤔 there are 4 Big Boss versions on the box set but not sure if any are in Cantonese 🤔 all his Hong Kong movies were shot without sound so there's probably no audio of Bruce Lee from these movies sadly 😔
Another interesting video John. This new box set is mind blowing! Do you know why disc 1 of The Big Boss has an 18 certificate and disc 2 has a 15 certificate?
Hmmm interesting mate! The box set is truly amazing not sure about that I would imagine it might be an extra feature that has something more violent or adult? I'll be interested to know myself 🤔🤔🤩🤩
How many extra minutes do you get with this version, John, I prefer the extended versions to movies. I always think it's how we should have seen them. Enjoy your salad John, not trying to rub it in but I had a delicious steak, yummy yummy. Next to Enter the Dragon I think The Big Boss is his next best film, I think you prefer Way of the Dragon don't you.
@@MondoChelloveckMovies but will the missing FoF trailer be found as well as HK TV appearances ?? , they also did a Game trailer in HK cinemas in January '73 alleged
I'm getting itchy fingers on this, I have the criterion edition so ...........I'll think on it a bit more, every time I open the oul wallet all I hear is (Are you haven a laugh)
🤣🤣 it's such a tempting one Mack!! If they had struck a deal up with Warner for at least a 4k transfer of Enter the Dragon (but not the extras even) I think that would have been the tipping point for all Bruce Lee fans 🤔😊😊 yeah my wallet has been hammered recently for sure 😵💫😵💫😵💫🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍

4 out of the 5 cuts are in 4K....the only one not in 4k is the unrestored grindhouse version of the Mandarin Cut .. which is still on a 4k so you get a bit of a boost I suppose...only good thing is that this cut is all the same quality so you don't get any shifts in quality (but it's all the lower Grindhouse quality) hope that makes sense Rico 🤩🤩👍👍
Personally I think so Paul, add the Enter the Dragon 4k and basically that's the whole Bruce Lee experience right there! Expensive Yes, but wow! It's worth it 😁😁👍👍

It's probably going to be released on a 60th anniversary edition 😵💫 it would be great to find a first pressing of the pre cert to find these clips out mate 😊😊👍👍

@@pitney77 🤣🤣 haha good point!! Hope the missing bits come out before we shuffle off Pitney!!! 🤞🤞😉🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies is the red box set also limited edition do you know?
Good video John & have a good weekend.
Thanks Mark 😊😊 you too bud 😁😁👍👍
Loving this set. I've watched The Big Boss Mandarin cut with extras, Game of Death with extras, and Enter The Dragon without extras (seen them all before). Arrow have done an amazing job here, without a doubt the best release of the year.
And I wasn't going to get this set, I own them already and I've seen the films many times, but there is so much extra content in this set that it's worth every penny of that price tag. So dear Arrow, can we have a Brucesploitation box set next?
Yeah Stephen, it's delivered on every level for me and I'm only 2 discs in!! 😱 I'm putting at best release of year by far at the moment, can't see it being bettered Stephen 😁👏👏 as you say we have seen these movies countless times but the presentation and extras (which are plentiful) make ut an essential buy for Bruce Lee fans 👏👏 Severin are releasing a Brucesploitation documentary soon, which should be great but a box set of the best Brucesploitation movies would be amazing wouldn't it Stephen 😲😲🤩🤩👍👍
id like Ninja strikes back with Le & Hwang Jang Lee commentary , dont care if it has to be subbed lol
So far watched big boss mandarin cut, fist of fury, way of the dragon 😍 started a channel my first video is up 😅lol im no Steven Spielberg 😅
I'll take a look at that video Stuart....we are waiting to see The Dickies at the moment 🤩🤩🤩🤘🤘🤘
I've already got the master collection on blu though! Is it still worth the double dip?
I think you will have a great time with the set and I hope there is enough new stuff to keep you busy mate....I'm probably going to Game of Death 2 next to see what the versions are like compared to my Honk Kong Legends DVD version 🤔🤔😁😁👍👍
I want that undubbed cut
The Mandarin audio Panda? 👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies yes! Sir. I watched the original undubbed Game of Death! It’s so much better. It’s only 20 mins.
Never seen that version Panda 🤔🤩👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies ruclips.net/video/CJFq64B_5EQ/видео.html
@@MondoChelloveckMovies check it out. I mean it’s 40 mins
Has this collection been released in the USA? (Can’t find it on Amazon)
It's a UK release only sadly, if you do import it the blu ray discs are Region B locked mate 👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Ahh! Ok. What’s it like knowing that this collection is out and I’m on an indefinite waiting list?? Me:😤😖😫
@CuzCutz it's really annoying when a great release comes out in a different territory and it's hard to get mate 😔😔 hope you can find it 🤞👍👍👍
Hi , I remember seeing The Big Boss multiple times at the cinema then getting it on video and the soundtrack was different ... it had music by Pink Floyd on it which I'm sure you have seen yourself.
10 extra minutes Gary!!! 🤣🤣🤣 I'm a veggie so salad is my steak mate.....unfortunately 🤯🤯🤣🤣
@@MondoChelloveckMovies but will the missing FoF trailer be found as well as HK TV appearances ?? , they also did a Game trailer in HK cinemas in January '73 alleged
I haven't even thought about that 😲 there must be a wealth of stuff like this that no one has seen for many years!! 😁😁 Great info mate 🤩🤩👍👍
Did you get Satan's little helper on treasured films 😊
Not yet Gary, but its on the list mate 👍
Have you got a oled tv ?
just had the curse 2 and the torture chamber of dr satism new on 88 films😜
Dr Sadism looks a good one Gary 👍👍
U have Dolby vision to thank for the colours…
Totally agree Ed, Dolby Vision is such a good tool to have mate 😊😊👍👍
So are all 5 cuts of BIG BOSS on 4k or just 2 and the rest on bluray?
That's a good question Rico....I'm pretty sure they are all on a 4k disc....whether or not they all are in 4k is another thing.....ill check the cuts this evening and get back to you (great question mate) 🤩🤩🤔🤔👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Here is why I ask. 4k we all can watch because it's region free. But the blurays are not region free.
@ricogomez4020 yeah I can definitely confirm the blu rays in this set are Region B locked, I tried them out on my region A player today and they came up this disc will not play on this machine, going to see if the Big Boss cuts are in 4k now mate 👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Kareem : "When Bruce died i thought it was publicity stunt for Game"
👍
🤩🤩👍👍
Is ut worth the money john ?
Personally I think so Paul, add the Enter the Dragon 4k and basically that's the whole Bruce Lee experience right there! Expensive Yes, but wow! It's worth it 😁😁👍👍
Might have to purchase soon then
