  • Hello!
    A lot of you have been wanting a little peek into my head about how I plan to manage my next step of going freelance. Please be aware that this is what I'm doing and it does not mean that everything I say or do is the best way to approach it, this is just base on all my own research and knowledge. I know of a lot of you plan on opening your own Etsy stores and start your own journey of becoming freelance so I hope my video helps you in any sort of way(even if it's just having my video on as background sound to feel less lonely). If you have any questions or suggestions that can help our little community out in transitioning to freelance, please do share it with us in the comments section, and don't be afraid to talk with each other! Remember to always be nice and stay safe. Thanks for watching! Lots of love, Apple Cheeks.

    I started freelancing full-time 2 months ago ( I've been freelancing for 5 years while working a FT job) and some tips I can give to people wanting to freelance full-time is this:
    1. Make sure you have some savings set aside, enough that if you didn't have any client work you could pay your bills for 3-6 months.
    2. Have some clients lined up. Depending on what you do for freelance (I am a graphic designer and illustrator) I worked a FT job while freelancing on the side, while working FT I slowly built up my client list, enough to leave my job and start freelancing FT.
    3. Have check-ins with yourself every few months to re-access what is happening. Do you need to find more clients, do you need to work PT to help supplement work, etc.
    4. Decide what works better for you: Billing by hour or flat rate.
    5. Think about contracts, they are extremely important and it helps to protect you and the client.
    6. Track your time, it helps you to see where you are allocating your hours and gives you an idea of how much your time and work costs when pitching ideas or quoting a client.
    7. Ask friends, colleagues and family about freelancing, a lot my my knowledge comes from people who have been doing it longer than me (Also experience)!
    This is my opinions and how I got started, this might not work for you, but i hope it helps anyone looking for a bit more information.

      @@alyssaromero1159 Getting clients can be a bit tough, some of the ways I've found clients is though word of mouth, from previous jobs I've had in the design field, through social media (IG, LinkedIn, my website, contacts/professors from school as well as networking/Conference events.
      I believe The Futur here on youtube has some really great videos on freelancing, networking, pricing, getting clients etc as well : )

    I am pretty sure you're gonna succeed in this new chapter of your carreer!! Sometimes I do some freelance work as a source of extra income, but I do have a full time job. As you said in your video, for people who want to follow the freelance path, I'd recommend trying to save enough for 6 months of expenses, like an "emergency saving". Even tho I have a full time job, I find it important to have that kind of financial safety in case I get unemployed or something (specially in this pandemic situation). By the way, I wish I could buy some of your merchandise, I love it so much!!

    I'm going into my final year in university, and I've been thinking about going into freelance and if it's the right choice for me. If you would like some resources, I recommend a book titled *Freelance, and Business, and Stuff: A Guide for Creatives* by Amy Hood and Jennifer Hood of Hoodzpah Design! In the design community, it's considered to be a super helpful resource. Although you're in the art community, I think it'd be great to see a different perspective.
    I've also read *The Profitable Artist* by New York Foundation for the Arts(NYFA) for an arts entrepreneurship class; it's more of an overview of all the different types of businesses and non-profit organizations, marketing plans, copyright laws, networking, etc.
    I'll definitely look into the books you recommended :D Thank you so much for sharing this helpful video!!!

    My tip: keep your etsy running even if you have a Squarespace shop. When you close your store, and reopen it after some time, it won’t have as much success as it had before (unfortunately) because the more orders you get, the higher you get in the etsy search, and if you close or pause you basically go down (hope I explained it well enough)

    Two books I would recommend are:
    How to be an illustrator by Darrel Rees and
    The Illustrators Guide to Law and Business Practice by the Association of Illustrators 😊 both are really helpful for stuff like contract writing, invoicing etc. I’m trying to start up an Etsy shop after putting it off for SO long! Often suffer really bad with comparing my
    skillset and my work to others! Part of my problem is a don’t have a certain style and it can often look like my work has been done by 10 different people 😂 I’m working on this though and I’m trying to see it as less of a bad thing! I love your work and I’m currently in the process of binge watching your videos 😊! ❤️

    three months of savings is definitely minimum. I had to have emergency surgery but I had enough money for the recovery time easy (3months). Right after, covid hit, and I was so lucky I had saved 6 months of savings to hold me off during this time too (3 for surgery and 3 more for covid). My other friends were not so lucky.

    thank you for this! i've been weighing my options career-wise since i got my degree, and for the past year or so i've considered transitioning to freelance work. what always stopped me was the uncertainty of it all, especially financially speaking, but quarantine kind of gave me the push i needed to just take the leap and get started, especially since everything is up in the air right now. if anyone else is in the same boat, i urge you to take the leap as well! i don't think we'll get a better chance than this.
    it's been so helpful to hear about your process and i can't wait to implement the same practices in my new lifestyle. you're an inspiration and i wish you nothing but good luck in this new venture :~}

    I need to read that "Managing Your Day" book o - o
    Some short books I think you would enjoy are "Steal Like an Artist" and "Show Your Work" by Austin Kleon! I know he has maybe another one as well, but those are the two I've read. They're both affirming to me as an artist, and really short so you can just flip through them whenever you need a pick-me-up. Adam JK's books are good for that as well!! ALSO ALSO I would love a journal video from you -- mostly about the supplies you use. I want to start art journaling AND bullet journaling again, but I also like things to be separate... but also not have a bunch of different journals. In one of your videos I saw that you sort of have separate journals combined into one, so I'm very curious about that!!

    what i'm realizing lately is working from home is incredibly difficult when you live with family, constantly get interrupted even on the simplest of tasks, and kids are running about annoying the living hell out of you. rip to myself. don't know how i'll get by through the upcoming months as my anxiety rises and anger destroys me.

    • @apple.cheeks
      @apple.cheeks  4 года назад

      I relate to this so so so so much. When I went back home to visit my parents, I was planning on getting lots of work done and being so motivated and productive....and I couldn't do one thing when I was back. I think if living at home is your only way, communicate with your family about your needs to get work done! Let them know from specific times that you need that time just to yourself and hopefully they can respect that~
