I just had my second FUT procedure. I chose FUT over FUE because I already had a scar from the previous procedure. Besides, I did not have to shave my hair on the back and no one knows I had a procedure. However, yes, it can be painful and the discomfort is an issue for weeks after the procedure with the stitches gone.
I had fut last July and I agree with what you said. I think the scar healed pretty well but at this point if I do another transplant I'll probably just do fut again considering the scar is already there.
Well, I've had six FUT procedures over the years and now regret it. I've lost 50%+ of the transplanted hair cannot buzz cut my head because of the scarring on the sides and back. Tattooing is an option, if I could do it again I'd go FUE you can at least shave or buzz cut your head as the balding progresses and it does. Good luck
FUT was a nightmare for me I had 3 procedures back in early 2000s with ugly scars the thing is baldness is progressive in time those scars will be more visible which is my problem I’m 57 now and still struggling with baldness I had to have SMP to camouflage scars 😢 so hood luck!
These sound less like problems with the technique itself but more with the surgeon and a lack of aftercare. AFAIK it's rare to continue to lose significant hair when on the proper medication - and if you lost donated hair, that's either surgeon or patient error. Granted, getting a surgery and not going on Fin or Dutasteride is a waste for almost everyone, unless you're already very old and stable.
I've seen comparisons where the FUE procedure cumulatively creates more scar area - just spread out. It seems FUE might have a higher transection rate. Longer hair covers any potential scar, and SMP can be used if a scar remains. It also seems like it would be a less taxing day for the doctor.
Great video!! I agree, FUT has a great place still in the field of hair transplant surgery. I did three last month and have another coming up next month. Thank you for the summary from the conference in Morocco!
Dr. Gary seems to advocate for multiple hair transplant sessions with roughly 3000 grafts each, gradually increasing density over time. While this approach is ideal for achieving optimal results, it's important to acknowledge that the cost of multiple procedures is a significant barrier for many patients. The desire for maximum graft coverage in a single surgery is often driven by financial constraints, not a preference for less optimal outcomes.
I'd be really interested in a more in-depth discussion about the advantages and disadvantages to FUT/FUE. There seems to be a divide in what doctors think about it. Some doctors are really pro-FUE (and indeed that's basically exclusively what is done in Turkey as far as I can tell), whereas other doctors feel like FUT is typically the way to go, especially if a patient is young and likely to have more surgery in the future (see e.g. The Hair Loss Show or Bloxham/Feller here on RUclips).
I think reducing PFS to people fear mongering on forums is a bad take. Like yes, people who are in the PFS, PSSD, or PAS communities know how rare it is. They know majority of Doctors aren't going to see it in their practice. It's not like it isn't obvious. But it's more than just the forums. There are tons of people who suffer and make it publicly known. This information isn't hard to find. More and more people are coming out talking about their negative experiences on every social platform they can. There is rarely this rhetorical goal of instilling fear into people who are considering taking finasteride. These groups are created to garner awareness for some viable treatment. It's also not easy when it's dismissed by every doctor that knows very little about these conditions. It's not like a dermatologist is going to specialize in PFS
One advice: If you think you might need more than 1 HT surgery, I would strongly consider doing FUT first. That way they can remove a strip with thousands of grafts, and your donor area will pretty much be ready to go again with no thinning for the next surgery. Doing several FUE HT's will quickly mess up your donor area.
I am the recipient of 3 FUT procedures from 2006 to 2012, totaling approximately 10,000 grafts. Although all three were successful and the results satisfactory, there is now a large degree of thinning in the donor area and around the lower sides. There is no way I could have a fourth procedure without severely compromising the donor area at this point. Therefore, the only option I see is for her multiple clip of her hair multiplication/clothing to finally become a reality. It's been talked about for too long and needs to happen. Thoughts?
@Doctor Gary Linkov - What if we can only make it out to Turkey once for one surgery? Wouldn't it make sense to do a giga session so you don't have to go back or for example, you can go back. Obviously, I like a good deal but the problem is Grafts are much cheaper and can go more volume in another country than I can in the U.S.
Congratulations, Happy to hear the good news and it's nice that you were invited to be a Speaker at that event! Next up, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), FUE Europe - Hair Transplant Society and the International Society for Aesthetics and Cosmetics (ISAC). @Dr. Linkov, in your opinion if a Hair Transplant Surgeon doesn't regularly go to, attend or isn't apart of a Professional Association as it concerns Hair Transplantation is that a huge red flag of any sorts?
I just had my second FUE procedure and both haven’t netted me over 800 grafts per session. The clinic had difficulty extracting grafts bc my hair follicles are deep/long so FUT is most likely my only option to get a high number of grafts in a single session
I already watched this video on Spotify, but I wanted to comment. I’m so excited you are going to Brazil! Although I don’t live there anymore, it is still my homeland.
I experienced bad side effects from finasteride. Dizziness, heart palpitations and basically felt like I was dying. I’m sure it’s not common but it’s real.
I wish you talk about testosterone therapy and hair transplant, like should we start testosterone therpay then get hair transplant or how to avoid hair loss after testosterone therapy
I had several transplants that had been in place and were holding nicely for over 10 years. I then started TRT and ended up losing much of my transplanted hair. I’ve since had two more transplants and have been using minoxidil and finasteride. So far after 3 years my hair seems to be holding fairly well. My problem is I’m running out of grafts. I’ve already had several hundred grafts of beard hair moved to my scalp. My point is if you have transplants and start testosterone there is a very good possibility that you will lose some of your transplants. High testosterone and hair transplants don’t work very well together you can either have a good head of hair or a healthy looking body with the combination of both is a difficult balancing act.
@@TheLevantine If you're relatively young, you should consider not getting on TRT. Figure out what's going on in your life to cause low T and fix it naturally first. Sleep, diet, supplements, plastics/exposure, extreme stress, etc. TRT inhibits the body's ability to produce it's own T, and so once you're on it, you're on it for good. It's not a young man's tool. It's for older men who cannot naturally by any means produce a healthy baseline of T.
Hi doc. As a compounding pharmacist I've had great success with high concentration latanoprost. It's expensive but works better than anything else. Do you have any comments?
Dr. Linkov, I am a seventy year old MtoF trans person. I take 150 mg of spironolactone daily. I have been doing various things to regrow hair like minoxidil, a rosemary oil mixture, scalp massage, and derma rolling, and have seen some minor results. My testosterone level is nearly zero and my estradiol level is about 150 -170. I am thinking of adding finasteride to my regime. My question is, can I benefit from finasteride if I am taking spironolactone and my testosterone level is quite low? Also, can finasteride substitute for spironolactone in reaching my target testosterone level as a trans woman? Also, I am as Ph.D. statistician and I think both quantitative and qualitive analysis of results is helpful. Both need to be incorporated in any medical practice, no matter what the medical specialty. I think your videos are great. I am considering hair transplantation and will likely have a consult with you via telemedicine. Thank you so much.
PFS is controversial because its hard to trace causation and there are doctors who openly support it online and some doctors want to toss it aside, but based on my personal experience and experience from a doctor I know personally, PFS could set off other health issues that were already there/hidden and PFS itself is not the actual syndrome but a blanket term to encompass a constellation of symptoms associated with finasteride-related issues.
I'm glad you're mentioning this because it's very dismissive amongst most of the mainstream medical community as well as HT surgeons. PFS can and has caused irreparable harm to a small # of men, so I personally avoid all forms of it.
Hey Dr. Linkov, I am curious to know if you have heard of vertigo/dizziness being a side effect of Finasteride? I took some Finasteride and got Vertigo really bad. I didn't know if it was because of the Finasteride or if they were unrelated. Any thoughts?
Finasteride drops a bomb on your body and everyone reacts differently. None of these doctors are ever going to tell you the truth about it because it makes them tons of money and they're not liable if your life gets destroyed. I strongly advise you to stop taking that poison before it's too late. Go read the post finasteride syndrome forum if you don't believe me. I wish I had listened to those people before I took it.
What reputable surgeon or center could be recommended for someone considering hair surgery when living in Cairo, Egypt? Is there somewhere to get recommendations for good surgeons?
Dr. Gary I had a hair transplant in December 2023, and I am currently taking minoxidil 2.5 and dutasteride 0.5mg . Is the combination of both necessary for life?
Eyebrow hair transplants!? If I have full eyebrows but receding hairline, should I expect my eyebrows to thin too? And will finasteride save my eyebrows?
Not an expert but pretty sure eyebrow hair are different from scalp hair so finasteride wont improve it. And even if you lose your hair on top of the head your eyebrows wont be affected
But closing the donor area using Trichophytic method doesn't leave visible scrar in FUT procedure. Hair grows out of scar if it's done properly and the donor area can be saved for future hair transplantation as well. I know that doctors who learned FUE and perform it on patience find excuses regarding FUT as they learned only FUE and have to propogate it for their own benefit. But still FUT is much better option if the donor area gets closed properly using trichophytic method. The scar in this technique is only visible if you shave off your head completely and the scar is as thin as threads which is not noticable even after shaving off the head.
Not before time travel 😢.All jokes aside, a cure to baldness has the same likelihood as altering someone's height. Humanity may see a cure sometime after 2100 or a few years before 2100. We won't see a cure in our lifetime.
Good work on explaining pros and cons of hair replantation. I don't know if surgeons have already thought of this, but can't you use hair replantation from a healthy women's head to a balding men's scalp? I mean, it makes more sense to me to use a women's healthy, beautiful head of hair rather than a man's unhealthy hair for regrowth purposes. I don't know if it's the same as transplanting a liver where the body may reject a foreign tissue as an invader, but if I were rich, I certainly would entertain the idea of using a woman's hair or even another man's healthy head of hair. If the donor were paid good money, I think it would be a unique, novel idea. What do you think?
Personally I’m glad to hear that hair transplants can be done without have to shave your hair off. As someone who has had a brain tumour where I was one years old, a bump die to it and a big scar… Although I am going bolder at all costs would never want my hair fully shaved. Thus, why so into hair grown and your channel over the year. You do very good videos and thank you for educating us all ❤

Stem cell follicles are still in the experimental stages . There's no set timeline for when it will be available for human use. Researchers are actively exploring the potential of stem cells for hair growth and regeneration. It's important to note that any new treatment developments will require rigorous testing and clinical trials before they can be approved for human use. With the evolution of AI and technological advancements, we could see something like cloning or stem cells by 2035 or sooner whether you want to believe it or not. Most things we see today will be like looking at things in the 90's from 2024 by the time we get into the mid 2030's, just watch!

is it necessary to use finesteride even after hair transplant. what happens if someone does not want to take topical or oral medication after their transplant
Post finasteride syndrome is real and it can even be explained by the mechanism of action of the drug. Doctors just gaslight their patients. I got PFS upon stopping finasteride. All of us experience the same thing, a crash / rapid development of extreme symptoms including genital numbness and shrinkage, anhedonia, inability to feel alcohol or substances, no libido and other side effects all pointing to androgen receptor upregulation. I told my hair doctor this and he just dismissed me as crazy. Most doctors don’t even know the mechanism of action of the drug and the downstream effects when that is their job. They just have turned into salesmen for big pharma.
Also many individuals with pfs don’t report it to their doctor as they are afraid, they already stopped finasteride etc. It is a rare condition but much more common than reported to hair surgeons. There are many cases of patients that stop finasteride, report side effects, the doctor says don’t worry they will go away and 6 month passes and they don’t and the patient doesn’t follow up with the doctor and then the doctor just considers that patient OK.
I follow a Christian prophet and clicked on his live video. Feed, one second after I clicked, he said there’s a woman watching with alopecia, and I pray for her miraculous healing. Doctor, I also suffer from alopecia Universalis since age 4 from exposure to a superfund site. I’ve already started growing eyebrows and baby hairs all over my head, and I am praying for miraculous healing. Really, with God anything is possible! Seek God and ask Him!
@drgarylinkov Doc, does miconeedling restore the receding hair line? Or is it only recovered by transplant? I already use dutasteride and my hair is stable, but I really wish to regain about an inch of my hair line, and Im thinking about acquiring a dermapen. Do you think its worth it? Or should I just save for a transplant? Thank you in advance!
I started finasteride 3mo ago and have zero side effects. I'm annoyed because the reason I didn't start it six years ago was because of fear of things like pfs. So because of fear I let my hairline recede to the point that it was so ugly I decided pfs was worth the risk of mitigating further loss. Now no side effects and I was scared for nothing and now I'm going to need a hair transplant which I could have avoided if I had just taken the medication! Don't be like me. Just try the med and if you think you're having side effects stop for a while and then try again later to see if the side effects were real or not.
@@FirstLast-dy4gt "Post finasteride syndrome." It's a condition that many doctors don't think is real. Basically rumors going around that Finasteride can completely kill your sex drive or make it hard to get erections. I was scared maybe the medicine would do this to me.
Hi Gary, I went to see two different doctors and got two different answers in terms of the number of grafts. One said they can extract 3000 Fue and the other 1200 FUE . Who should I believe?
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and discoveries Dr Gary! This is off topic- but i was wondering when the gut health video interview with gi specialist is going to air? I am looking forward to it!
Dr. Linkov, was there any mentioning about Verteporfin? I heard that there is now a consent to do several trials by the bigger names - are you happen to be involved, or have you heard any details about this? Indivivual trials have been already done (or ongoing) by Dr. Bloxham and Dr. Barghouti, but a more extended one would be very benefical to see if it adds any real value on the donor area.
There's ALOT of interest around Dr Taleb Barghouthi utilising Verterporfin to help regenerate the donor region following FUE. He's now operating in London, UK where new trials are set to start.
When you start creating hair follicles from stem cells again, then it's worth the dialogue. There is no question that Finasteride lowers libido in some people.
Don't you think that is crazy one man can take finnasteride with zero problems and they get nice hair . Another man can take finnasteride and go through the worst times of thier life untill they stop the drug and even then some report the problems don't stop.
Finasteride temporarily reduces DHT, which rises back to normal levels over several weeks once the medication stops. The fear mongers are a bunch of morons who refuse to grasp that concept and are causing needless suffering of preventable hair loss. .25mg finasteride provides 90% of the hair protection benefits of 1mg with a near zero rate of side effects.
I'm more confused since I'm losing my hair around my sideburns and at the same time noticed that my hair pretty much stopped growing, I don't know what's going on.
No finasteride/durasteride, I have been taking oral minoxidil for about a year now, I stopped loosing my hair, is also not as thin and some how my scalp looks ¿"denser/fuller"?
my father had a FUE, 30 years ago, that time the punch was bigger.........it`s a very old technology, and the loss rate is higher than on FUT...so what is the point to do a FUE, only because no big scar ?
I think no hair transplant doctor had seen PFS because hair transplant patients are more "locked in" with finasteride because they already paid so much money. They might be more prone to dismiss side effects, and to not stop taking the drug ("post" syndrome). Also they have some incentive to deny this condition. I think if you ask other doctors, endocrinologists, urologists, they will more likely have seen it. Personally I still have side effects 3 months after stopping, mainly sexual. I am hoping they can resolve with more time. Gary is obviously a very intelligent doctor but maybe he should talk with a doctor who actually admits to treating this to better inform his patients.
I tried ur topical finasteride and even at a very small dose. It gave me heart palpitations/.. that was after 1 tiny dose. Any thoughts on this? Should I try again?
I did 2500 graphs (~they counted, i just go with the figure). Its been 8? months since then.. Im on Minoxidil pill + some extras (vitamins, collagen, saw palmetto, etc). At some point i could swear a lot of the implanted hair didn't survived.. say afte month 1-2, when hair was shorter.. like +30% of it (cause after first days i was seeing a particular density.. latter, after it fell & then regrown, including now, i see empty spots + lower density) So, it makes me think.. first, maybe they did something wrong.. or i did? Or, if it would have been better to split into 2 smaller operations...
Hello Dr. Linkov, what do you think about Saw Palmetto medication? I heard it does the same job as finesteride, but with a lesser effect, is this true?
I like Gary. I went to Athens for mine with Seneca medical group. Not sure what to think yet. I’m going through shedding atm. I do have one burning question for you Gary.. if you was naturally losing your hair.. knowing what you know. Would you have a HT? if so.. which method would you choose if you was a Norwood 6 and who would you choose apart from your own team to do it? 😅
There is the developmental saline solution that reduces scarring. Hair would regrow from repaired areas. If this works you would regrow hair from donor areas after fue surgeries to be used again later for more surgeries. Basically farming.
Over life time, i believe combo of fut and fue yields extra 3000 grafts, while fut only like 5000-6000 extra vs fue only. It was a study done. The scar itself, depends on the ability of surgeon to close it nicely. Some close it so nicely, you can barely see it on clean shaven head. One of the best closures come from dr Saifi in Wroclaw, he used to be surgeon, and from Hattingen in Swiss.
Post finasteride syndrome is real it’s just the fact that doctors gaslight us and we don’t get heard. I’ve suffered for over 7 years with it and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy
Hallo guys, can someone please answer my question. I used minoxidil for about a month and my hair was shedding. Now I quit using minoxidil. What will be with my hair?
At some point you would think that the tech would get to a point to where you could just clone some donor cells to grow as many as you want - then just bypass FUE / FUT all together. But I am not a doctor so maybe that suggestion sounds insane.
ALso not a doctor, but I believe the body rejects the hair follicles if they're not from your body, due to the genetic makeup. Even moving like back hair to your scalp causes way more to get rejected. But hopefully one day they can use someone's stem cells to grow their own hair and transplant
I have to speak out that I legitimately had Post-Finasteride Syndrome that lasted roughly 2 years after stopping Finasteride. Because of the nature of the side effects, I’m hesitant to share them in great detail but someone needs to do it. It’s also worth noting that men generally don’t seek medical attention for things like this as often as women do. I’m certain that the reason those doctors don’t see many cases is because most men wouldn’t go back to a hair specialist to report concerns. Maybe their GP who probably wouldn’t record the case. The patient probably just hopes it gets better and waits it out. Especially when it’s something ‘embarrassing’ like your you know what turning as clear as water and then taking 2 years to go back to normal.
I have PFS for 1,5 year as well. Very surprised to hear the poll results. But then again, I also too haven’t told my hair transplant surgeon about it, simply because I know there’s nothing he could help me with, so I assume many would do similarly.

Doing several FUE HT's will quickly mess up your donor area.
Proud of you Gary. Plus youre still the best looking on the internet.
Obviously, I like a good deal but the problem is Grafts are much cheaper and can go more volume in another country than I can in the U.S.
finasteride side-effects should not be minimized, because you could quickly develop E.D. and liver damage.
Not necessarily, if they’re good at what they do. I’ll be at ISHRS this fall and am already an associate member.
Any discussion at the underlying condition that causes hair loss in men? How far away are we from solving that issue?

I experienced bad side effects from finasteride. Dizziness, heart palpitations and basically felt like I was dying. I’m sure it’s not common but it’s real.
How long into taking it?
@@sdean4816 I'm relatively still young but yeah I need both, I was thinking maybe I do TRT first then I go for a hair transplant idk
Does getting a natural hairline with African hair as apposed to straight caucasian hair pose multiple problems?
Definitely more challenging to work with curly hair, but beautiful results are possible. We have many examples in our gallery!
Finasteride is a DHT blocker, DHT attaches to Testosterone, so if youre testosterone is already nearly nothing there's no DHT affecting your hairloss.
I have upcoming hair transplant and came across this channel. Must comment here and see the information provided here is top notch! great content
PFS can and has caused irreparable harm to a small # of men, so I personally avoid all forms of it.
i got it for months, it's a reality, thanks god i recover, but nearly suicid

Dr. Gary I had a hair transplant in December 2023, and I am currently taking minoxidil 2.5 and dutasteride 0.5mg . Is the combination of both necessary for life?
Do you have information on stem cells and/or exosomes for helping hair loss? If so, a video about them would be great!
How long are we talking about with the long hair transplant. Is there an ideal length discussed?
Eyebrow hair transplants!? If I have full eyebrows but receding hairline, should I expect my eyebrows to thin too? And will finasteride save my eyebrows?
Yeah you’re pretty much fxcked

No, it doesn't
What do you recommend in cases of men on TRT. Would you still recommend Finesteride

When are stem cell follicles going to be mainstream? That's the best way
Not sure, but excited for it!
Stem cell follicles are still in the experimental stages . There's no set timeline for when it will be available for human use.
Researchers are actively exploring the potential of stem cells for hair growth and regeneration.
It's important to note that any new treatment developments
will require rigorous testing and clinical trials before they can be approved for human use. With the evolution of AI and technological advancements, we could see something like cloning or stem cells by 2035 or sooner whether you want to believe it or not. We're not living in the 2010's no more and I'll argue that we're further ahead that we were in 2020-2021. We're advancing our technologies rapidly and there's no sign of it slowing down.I have faith that something will hit the market in the next decade of two. I'd argue that the 2020's will be the end of the old world we once knew. Al will be more prominent in the 2030's. Most things we see today will be like looking at things in the 90's from 2024 by the time we get into the mid 2030's, just watch!

With FUT surgery, is it possible to tattoo the scar area afterwards so that it blends in?
Question... (asking for a friend) ... at 36 'my friend' has quite aggressive temporal recession, leaving that "peninsular" look - still a strong frontal area, but looks like the peninsula will turn into an island soon. General thinning on top, but no crowning yet...
Dont want to go on medication, waiting for it to stabilise naturally- should my friend save up for a 40th birthday transplant treat, or just embrace the shave?
Fut surgeons often seem to downplay the linear scars. Theres no way im ever risking that. Thats just the worst and for some even a good surgeon ends up producing a knarly scar.
Hi Dr Linkov. It appears one of the factors for maintaining a healthy head of hair is a good blood supply to the hair roots, do you have any advice on how to best achieve this? Also what is the best hair transplant procedure for Afro style hair? & does your clinc provide this?. Thank you for all your videos
How much for the eyebrows FUE hair transplant costs? How long for the procedure?
Thanks!
Thank you, Gary...men want to have hair and need people to help THEM feel good about themselves and women and professionals should encourage that...please help men realize that hair transplants can make them feel confident..cost is such a factor as well as these improvements cost money and it is such an 'unavailable' treatment money wise

Greetings doc. Just wanna say you have been an inspiration to us men. "Respect mon" & stay safe.🫡 Fr 🇯🇲
is it necessary to use finesteride even after hair transplant. what happens if someone does not want to take topical or oral medication after their transplant
Are there any updates on breezula? Do you think it's promising?

Did most of the doctors in that meeting have full hair?
Shade.
In some people. Placebo in most.

Are you able to recommend reliable practitioners in the United Arab Emirates?
You did not mention stem cell treatments called Exosome and Regenira Activa. Could you do a video on that?
When r u coming with cloning of hair n use it for transplant
At some point i could swear a lot of the implanted hair didn't survived.. say afte month 1-2, when hair was shorter.. like +30% of it (cause after first days i was seeing a particular density.. latter, after it fell & then regrown, including now, i see empty spots + lower density)
So, it makes me think.. first, maybe they did something wrong.. or i did? Or, if it would have been better to split into 2 smaller operations...
There are many things which can impact your transplant apart from the genes such as stress, lifestyle, what you eat
Doctor, could you recommend a clinic in Miami or nearby? Thank you for all your help.
Impressive👏….What’s not to love about you Dr. Linkov! 🎉
Hello Dr. Linkov, what do you think about Saw Palmetto medication? I heard it does the same job as finesteride, but with a lesser effect, is this true?
How can i get consultation with your clinic if I'm looking for FUE?!
Can donar area that has been used up can be filled with body(leg, hand) hairs?
Are there any safe, functional topical solutions for regrowing eyebrows?

Post finasteride syndrome is real it’s just the fact that doctors gaslight us and we don’t get heard. I’ve suffered for over 7 years with it and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy
Hallo guys, can someone please answer my question. I used minoxidil for about a month and my hair was shedding. Now I quit using minoxidil. What will be with my hair?
Your hair will go back to normal and the thinning/balding will continue slowly or fast depending on your genetics .
I was hoping you were gonna say we were close to hair multiplication/ cloning but will never happened in my lifetime darn

That open line of communication between patient and doctor is key to avoid these prolonged side effects.
I have PFS for 1,5 year as well. Very surprised to hear the poll results. But then again, I also too haven’t told my hair transplant surgeon about it, simply because I know there’s nothing he could help me with, so I assume many would do similarly.
